Kagome couldn't sleep. She had been lying awake in bed for what seemed like hours. Every time she would get close, something in the back of her mind would stop her. She felt that something was off, but she didn't know what.

She turned over and sighed heavily into her pillow. Then, an icy feeling passed through her head and she bolted upright, no longer interested in sleeping. She recognized that from the training as her sensing evil and for her to get that big of a jolt…

She screamed as her door burst open, effectively startling the intruder. “Hey! What the hell is that for?!”

She exhaled in relief. “Sorry, I'm just a little tense. Is there something you want?”

There was an explosion outside that shook the whole building. “Bah! There's no time for this!” He growled and moved across the room to Kagome.

”Inuyasha? What's—”

“We have to leave. Now!” he said before she could ask. “The village is under attack.” He pointed at the corner of the room at her bow and arrow set. “Grab that and follow me.”

She was about to ask more but a ground shaking explosion outside stopped her. She obeyed and followed him. “What's going on?”

“I don't know!” He answered. “Somehow some demons got in past the wards undetected. Apparently they were taken apart somehow.”

“But…What could be able to do that?” She asked uneasily, dreading the answer.

“Kouga.” He said simply before turning the corner and exiting the building. Kagome took in her surroundings. Warriors were rushing all over the place as commanders were shouting orders.

“Are you sure?” She asked fearfully.

“I got the bastard's scent a while ago. If we don't hurry he'll catch yours. We're meeting Sango, Miroku and Shippo over at the tunnel entrance.” The pair stopped as a house was leveled near them and a great, lumbering demon stepped over the rumble.

His gaze narrowed on Kagome and he charged, a giant hatchet held high. Kagome fumbled with her bow in panic. Inuyasha growled annoyed and snatched her out of harm's way.

The demon turned to them but fell transfixed with several arrows in the back and fell to the ground dead. “Come on!” Inuyasha roared as more of the giant demon's crashed through the houses to meet the village's forces.

`Where is she?' A lone hawk-demon half-way up the mountains surrounding the village thought. He could hardly concentrate he was so happy. Naraku had come to him and given him a simple job.

First, he was to infiltrate Kouga's army and follow them to the priestess' village. Once the attack started he was to slip away unnoticed and go part way up one of the mountains surrounding the village.

Then came the fun part, Naraku asked that with his skills as a sniper, that he would pick off some girl. If he succeeded he would get a promotion. Chuckling to himself he looked around until his eyes came to rest on a fleeing girl following a half-demon.

`There we are!' He notched an arrow to his giant longbow and waited for a shot.

“Get out of the way!” Inuyasha roared blowing through a group of demons. Kagome followed quickly.

“How… much… farther?” She asked him, feeling short of breath at the exercise when she had just been in bed.

“Not much, why? You tired or something?” He asked sarcastically.

“What was that?” She asked icily, stopping mid-run. “I think I'm keeping up pretty well for a “weak human”!” Inuyasha was about to say something but stopped as his ears picked up a subtle noise.

He tackled her to the ground as a giant arrow whizzed over her, missing by a hair. “Damn it!” He cursed picking her up and tossing her on his back. “Hold on! Some bastard's shooting at us!”

With that he turned and began sprinting. Inuyasha leapt to the side, dodging another arrow from the sky. More came and soon he had to dodge every few seconds to avoid getting hit.

“Damn it.” The assassin cursed firing one arrow after another at the fleeing pair. So into what he was doing that he failed to notice someone behind him. He yelled in pain as he felt cold steel pierce his back.

“You have failed.” A monotone voice said from behind him. As Kohaku stepped out into his view.

“Wait! No I haven't! I can still—” He fell silent as Kohaku's blade cut through his neck, severing his head. Kohaku calmly pulled his chain back as Naraku's orders went through his head.

“He has one shot Kohaku. If he misses, kill him. Otherwise, the prince may catch on to what we're doing.” Kohaku turned to return to his master. In his mind, something told him it was wrong to kill allies. He ignored it.

“Well looks like someone got the bastard.” Inuyasha snarled as he noticed a lack of arrows flying at him.

“Yeah…” Kagome agreed slowly. Then she felt it. Her body was overcome with dread as she turned her head slowly towards where the feeling was coming from. Kouga had found her. “No…”

“Shit!” Inuyasha roared picking up the familiar scent and began to run as fast as he could. Unfortunately, it was not fast enough. Kouga flew over some houses with a feral roar as he found his prey.

“Today's the day you die half-breed!” He screamed as he plummeted down onto him, sword raised.

Inuyasha barely managed to dodge the blow, leaping to the right and coming to a stop. It had split the earth where it struck. “He's never had that power before…” Inuyasha said under his breath.

“Inuyasha, we have to move!” Kagome pleaded.

“Can't do that, he's too fast.” Inuyasha said lowering Kagome off his back. “I'll fight him. You run to the others.”

“But…” She began but stopped knowing how stubborn he was. She reached out her hands and touched his sword, focusing her energy into it. She knew it wasn't enough to beat Muramasa, but it was the best chance they had.

“Kagome?” He asked watching as his blade flashed pink for a second before fading.

“Kaede taught me… Be careful…” She said softly before turning and running in the direction they had been going. Maybe Kaede would know what to do.

“Kagome!” Kouga called and moved to go after her but Inuyasha blocked the way. “Out of the way mutt!”

“Shut it Wolf! You're not going any farther!” He declared as he lashed out with his sword. Kouga raised his to block and the two blades collided. Unlike the last time where Muramasa's evil had gone through the blades and infected Inuyasha's arm, Kagome's power stopped it.

“I'm going to kill you!” Two voices rang out as they began to push against each other, both intent on winning the deadlock.

“Kaede!” Kagome screamed as the old priestess came into view along with the rest of her group.

“Ah, Kagome.” She said turning around but her eyes narrowed seeing she was alone. “Where is Inuyasha?”

“Kouga found us! He's fighting him.” She said reaching them.

“But… he can't beat Kouga can he?” Shippo's fearful voice asked.

“Nay, he cannot beat him.” Kaede said and walked past Kagome. “I will go.”

“Lady Kaede?” Miroku asked

“Can you do something against the sword?” Sango chimed in hopefully.

“We shall see soon enough.” She said simply as she left the group. `Fate is a strange thing indeed… It is far too early for him to die, however… there is only one way to save him.' She thought grimly.
