InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The 2 Great Swords ❯ Battlefield of Evil ( Chapter 38 )

With a savage cry, the hordes of dark troops clashed with the two man army of Miroku and Sango. Miroku struck with both staff and sutra dashing the demons to pieces while Sango tore through her attackers with both boomerang and sword.

Despite the two's efforts to stay together, the enemy soon drove them apart and attacked them separately. “Sango!” Miroku called before blocking a poor sword thrust and dispatching his attacker. `We cannot fight like this for long. We have to regroup!'

Above the battle he faintly heard Sango answer and tried to move back to her but found his way blocked at every turn by the enemy.

Sango wasn't fairing much better, her boomerang near useless in close combat so instead using it as a shield to ward off attacks. “Miroku! Damn it!” She swore as she dodged one soldier's attack and lunging forward rending the demon in two.

The dull twang of bowstrings sounded above the melee and arrows rained down from the sky aimed at Miroku. “Miroku! Watch out!” Sango screamed. Miroku looked up and cursed, rolling towards her using the soldiers as cover.

He rose to his feet to meet heavy resistance, pushing him back to where he was. His eyes flickered to the archers as they reloaded. `Why are they only aiming at me?' He thought as his staff claimed another couple soldiers. `And why do they not seem to care if they hit their own?'

Sango saw the archers reloading and noticed the same thing. `They must think he's the weaker one! Damn it, he can't shield himself!' The second volley was let off, covering a much larger area than the first.

Miroku saw it coming and quickly thrust his staff into the ground and uttered a few choice words. A purple barrier sprung up around him deflecting the attack. He then yanked his staff out of the ground and continued to fight as if nothing had happened.

`I didn't know he could do that!' Sango thought in amazement. `Still he can't keep that up forever.' She crouched low and spun around in a circle boomerang out hewing the troops closer to her before letting the giant weapon fly.

It tore through the troops ranks and burst into the archer's ranks tearing a good many to pieces. She smiled as she watched her weapon begin to come back to her. That disappeared as she saw the troops it was flying over rise their weapons in an effort to stop it.

The weapon lost it's momentum as it failed to cut the evil swords and hit the ground, 50 feet away from her. “Sango!” Miroku called seeing that she was now fighting with just sword. “Damn it, get out of the way!”

Miroku with an uncharacteristic war cry charged through the ranks staff obliterating all who got in the way until he reached Sango in time to block a strike at her unprotected back.

“Thanks Monk.”

“Anytime.”

High above the melee in a small alcove on the side of the tower Shippo watched the combat. `Wow. Miroku and Sango sure can fight!' He thought excitedly. He looked up at the seemingly endless tides off troops. `But they won't last that long!'

The battle dragged on as the two battled fiercely in the sea of troops. With each one that fell, another instantly took its place. Miroku and Sango began to slow as their enemies stayed sharp as their blades.

“Sango… I can't keep this up…” Miroku breathed.

“Neither… can I…” She answered as she took a bad slash across her back. She fell to her knees, the sweat and blood pouring off her.

“Sango!” Miroku called and charged her attacker he swung once taking the demon's head off before standing above the fallen slayer.

“Miroku… Run… We can't…” Sango began but Miroku cut her off.

“And leave… you… behind? Never!” He called and thrust his staff into the ground falling to his knees. The monsters stopped attacking as the barrier went up and seemed happy to wait.

Miroku chuckled weakly as his strength began to fail him. “So… this is… as far… as I could…” He looked down at Sango.

“Monk… why didn't you…” Sango asked confusion evident in her voice.

Miroku smiled. “My dear Sango… I have traveled with you for a while now… Although it may not have seemed like it… you were always a special woman to me…”

Sango gasped at his words. “It was my wish…” He continued, “That after this was all over… and I was cured… to settle down with someone special like you… and raise a family…”

“Miroku… Do you really mean that?” She asked softly, tears filling her eyes.

Miroku nodded. “More than you know Sango…” He said as the barrier began to flicker. “I am happy that if I am to die… that I die with you…”

Sango smiled. “Me too… Good bye Miroku…”

Miroku nodded as he began to fall to the ground next to her. “Good bye… Sango…” The last thing he saw was her face before he blacked out. Neither of the two took any notice of Kouga as he sped by the two into the shrine, hell-bent on finding Kagome.

“What do you mean you can't give me the sword?” Inuyasha asked slowly, voice rising in anger. His hand subconsciously moved to where his sword used to rest.

“I'm afraid the sword would just reject you if you were to even touch it, let alone wield it.” The apparition said solemnly. “You do not possess what is necessary to wield the blade of light.”

“Well we don't know that until we try it do we?” He growled. “What's the worst that could happen?”

“The worst that could happen is the sword will reject you and destroy you internally for even touching its absolute purity.” The apparition replied nonchalantly.

Kagome looked behind her apprehensively as Inuyasha fought his losing battle against the spirit that inhabited the shrine area. She felt a very unwelcome presence rushing towards them “Inuyasha…” She began.

“I said you are unfit to wield it! Nothing will change that!”

“Shut up bastard! Maybe I should kick your ass and take it!”

“You will not speak such things in these halls, you insolent brat!” The spirit was getting angry.

“Inuyasha…” She said a little louder as the darkness drew closer.

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn't knock you around a bit you pompous ass!” Inuyasha roared ignoring Kagome.

The spirit began to fade. “Because you have bigger things to worry about.”

“INUYASHA!” Kagome screamed as a great ball of purple energy came rushing towards them.

“Shit!” Inuyasha cursed and jumped into her, knocking them both the ground as the deadly energy rushed by them. Inuyasha growled as best he could in his human form as he began to get to his feet. “You alright?”

Kagome shook her head for a second. “I think so… thanks for—” She never got to finish as a dark figure plowed into him sending him through a pillar.

“Don't ever touch my woman mutt!” Kouga roared as he landed in between them. “Or else you'll find yourself dead!”

Inuyasha rose slowly in obvious pain, `Damn human body… that hit from Kouga shouldn't have done this much. Feels like he broke a few bones.' He thought gripping his side.

“Kouga, stop!” Kagome pleaded but Kouga leapt towards Inuyasha, landing a jaw-shattering kick to his head, sending him up in the air. “Inuyasha!”

“Heh! I don't even need my sword against you mutt!” He taunted as jumped in the air and kicked him again, sending him into another pillar. He slumped down the pillar to the ground, unconscious.

Kagome gasped and scrambled to his side. “Inuyasha? Inuyasha!?” She tried to wake him up but to no avail. She heard laughing behind her as Kouga approached.

“Stupid mutt,” he drew his sword slowly, “this is the difference between us.” He leveled the sword at his chest. In an instant, Kagome was between them arms outstretched.

“Stop it! Don't hurt him!” She yelled up at him. She was not afraid. For some reason she could only think about protecting the fallen half demon behind her.

Kouga hesitated. “Get out of the way Kagome; don't worry about the mess I'll make it quick.”

Kagome shook her head. “I said leave him alone!” She shrieked.

Kouga didn't move but began to growl savagely. “Kagome, get out of the way or I'll remove you myself. Don't worry about him, he's trash.”

Kagome tensed at his words. She wouldn't move. He'd have to kill her. Kouga stood still, conflicting emotions all over his face. “Kagome… Move… Now!” He growled his eyes flashing purple.

Kagome drew in her breath. `No! If the sword takes complete control he'll just kill us both!' She looked behind her at Inuyasha. She had to do something! She couldn't leave him to die! She just couldn't…

Looking over his features, she wanted to cry. `How did things turn out like this? I never would have thought this would happen! What do I do? Inuyasha lend me some of your courage, please…' She thought desperately.

Her time with Inuyasha flashed before her eyes. Even though they fought so often and didn't always get along, he always protected her. She never asked him to but he did it anyway.

She smiled at all the good times they shared together. All the laughter, she had never been this happy back in her old life. Her life had always been boring before he came to the castle. Although her life as it was now wasn't quite what she had in mind, she still loved every minute of it.

Her eyes went wide as a revelation hit her. `I… don't want to leave him… I want to stay by his side… When did I start feeling like this?' The more she looked at his face the braver she became. No matter what the consequences, she wanted him to live. Breathing deeply and turning to face Kouga, she made her decision.

“I'll go with you.” Kouga stopped dead in his tracks. “If you let him live… I'll go with you… willingly.” She said slowly.

Kouga's eyes returned to normal as a grin broke out on his face. “That's it? Fine! He can't hurt me anyways!” He reached down and grabbed Kagome's arm and roughly pulled her to her feet.

Kagome winced as his touch burned her arm with his corruption. He let go and turned to leave, laughing maliciously as he beckoned to her to follow. `He's insane!' Kagome thought in despair.

Kagome suddenly hesitated and turned around to look back at Inuyasha. She went to his still form and knelt down to kiss him lightly on the cheek. “Live well Inuyasha. Don't come after me, please. I don't want you to die…” She stood and wiped a tear out of her eye before turning to follow Kouga to face the consequences of her choice.
