Ch. 11
The sun slowly rose in the morning sky, extending uncertain peacefulness over the still slumbering land. Inuyasha and company were already awake, and preparing for another day of travel. Inuyasha stood before the group, waiting impatiently, as a kneeling Kagome scanned through the contents of her yellow backpack.

“Maybe I should make a quick stop in the modern era. We seem to be running a little low on supplies,” said Kagome thoughtfully.

“We don't have time for that,” growled Inuyasha with his arms crossed. “This time guy could show up at any point. We can't afford you takin' a vacation.”

“Now wait a minute here!” yelled Kagome as she quickly got to her feet. “A trip back to the modern era hardly qualifies as a vacation. I was only thinking of you!”

“Now, now,” said Miroku calmly. “There's no need for hostility. We should be fine with our current amount of supplies. And, if we happen to need more over the course of our travels, I can always find us comfortable lodging and plenty of food.”

“You mean, sense a demonic aura that isn't there, then take advantage of unsuspecting home owners,” said Sango. She narrowed her eyes and glared at him.

Shippo sighed and lifted a paw to his head. “So much for growing and maturing from past experiences.” Kirara meowed in accord.

“Huh?” muttered Shippo has he lifted his head towards the sky. The sky had suddenly turned an eerie dark purple, extending a cloak of darkness over the entire area, as the clouds began to swirl as if creating a whirlpool in the heavens. This sudden change in surroundings was more than enough to catch the attention of the rest of the group.

“What…what's happening?” asked Kagome in a frightened tone.

“Everything seems to be…warping,” said Sango as she scoped the area.

Miroku's brow trembled with concern. “Indeed. Even the air itself seems to be shifting and almost…waving, like water. I've never seen anything like it.”

“Look! Up there!” yelled Kagome pointing towards the hole in the sky.

“This must be him!” said Inuyasha rushing to stand in front of Kagome with his sword in hand, ready to attack. “Coward! Come out and face us!”

“You seem to be confused, Inuyasha,” said an echoing voice. “You seem to think that I was hiding from you, when in reality…” In a flash of deep purple lightning, Takeshi suddenly appeared before the group, as the whirl pooling clouds abruptly ceased to move. “I was searching for you.”

Upon Takeshi's words, all movement and all sound in the surrounding area stopped. There was only stillness. The group stood in a defensive formation, each afraid to move from the spot.

“My name is Takeshi, and I am the soon to be owner of your time-traveling abilities.”

Takeshi swiftly moved to attack Inuyasha, wielding a blade very similar to Tetsaiga. Inuyasha blocked the attack, holding Tetsaiga above his head with both hands. The two swords seemed to be locked, until a wave of dark energy began to flow through Takeshi's sword, and into Inuyasha's body.

“Ahhh,” wailed Inuyasha. He was violently thrust back. He lay on the ground in pain, as Kagome quickly ran to his side.

“Inuyasha! Are you ok?!”

Takeshi smirked. “I've got you right where I want you.”

“That's what you think! Hiraikotsu!”

A giant boomerang appeared out of no where and knocked into Takeshi with force, pushing him to the ground.

“Way to go Sango!” cheered Kagome. “Inuyasha, are you alright?” she asked, turning to him.

“Yeah, I'm fine,” replied Inuyasha as he struggled to sit up. He turned to her and smiled confidently, then took her hand in his. His kind reply startled Kagome.

“I was expecting him to brush my concern away. Maybe he has changed,” she thought to herself.

Meanwhile, Takeshi slowly rose to his feet, his cool and confident demeanor completely erased.

“You…insolent little wench, how dare you!” In a fit of rage, he lifted his sword and threw an enormous stream of dark energy in Sango's direction. Sango watched in fear as the attack drew closer.

“Oh no…I can't get out of the way,” she thought.

The lightning struck her; a bright, crackling energy encased her body and shielded her from sight. All that could be heard was the drowning sound of screaming.

“Sango!” yelled Miroku as he quickly ran to the site.

Not able to fully see what had happened, Kagome and Inuyasha watched from afar in concern. Inuyasha attempted to stand to his feet, only to find that his body from the waist down was paralyzed.

“What?! What the hell's wrong,” he thought. “Damnit! I can't move!” he yelled aloud.

“Inuyasha, no!”

“Say goodbye,” said Takeshi with an evil smirk. A hole, similar to the whirlpool of clouds that had taken over the sky, began to form in Takeshi's stomach. Both Inuyasha and Kagome could feel a strong force pulling them in.

“Get out of here, Kagome!” yelled Inuyasha.

“There's no way I'm just leaving,” replied Kagome forcefully. She quickly took out her bow and aimed an arrow at Takeshi's self-made black hole.

“Your spiritual arrow won't work on me. I've acquired far too much time aura to be affected by something like that,” Takeshi said confidently.

“I have no other options, so it's worth a try. Here goes. Cha!”

Kagome's arrow began to glow a brilliant blue as it grew closer to Takeshi. Sensing its power, Takeshi quickly attempted to dodge it. Before he could get out of the way, the arrow struck Takeshi's shoulder and sent a surge of energy through his body, causing him to scream in pain.

“Aaaah…damn you…how did you do that? That's impossible…I thought only Tajira had that kind of power.”

Without uttering another word, Takeshi slashed at the air with his sword. A gaping hole formed, through which he quickly escaped. Once the portal had closed, the environment returned to normal. The sky was once again a bright blue, and the usual sounds of nature could be heard.

“It's over…for now,” said Kagome as she let out a sigh. She still knelt beside Inuyasha, her bow in hand.

“Damnit,” muttered Inuyasha under his breath. “I was useless. Kagome could have been killed,” he thought with his fists clenched.

“Wait…what happened to Sango and Miroku?” asked Kagome with concern. The recent commotion had caused her to forget about Takeshi's attack on Sango.

“I'll be right back, Inuyasha.”

Kagome ran to where Sango had been hit, only to find Miroku on his hands and knees, kneeling over hiraikotsu. Sango's body was no where in sight; it was too late. Kirara sniffed the area, whining softly.

“Kk…Kagome, Sango is...she's gone,” Shippo wailed as he began to cry.

“No…it…can't be,” whispered Kagome. The sight had stopped her in her tracks. Tears began to well as familiar red-sleeved arms wrapped around her. Inuyasha had managed to walk to the site. A sobbing Kagome turned and buried her face in his haori. Inuyasha, becoming a bit teary-eyed himself, bowed his head and rested it on Kagome's.

“Ss…Sango…please…no…” muttered Miroku. Tears streamed down and covered the place where his love had received the final blow. His hands clenched the tear-soaked dirt.

“This…this can't be…Sango, you can't be…” Miroku began to sob loudly as he violently slammed his fists against the ground.

“Sango!! You can't be gone…I love you.”
