The Best Man

I won't be neglected.....

The light showered through the beige curtained window and bathed the room in a Monday morning glow. A raven haired woman slept soundlessly in the white linen sheets.
She stirred...

I won't be denied.....

Her eyes opened revealing beautiful aqamarine orbs. She looked over her shoulder finding that the man in her life wasn't beside her. 'He's most likely downstairs'

The pleasure of your kisses
The pleasure of your smile....

The woman rose up and strectched her arms until they popped out of their uncomfortable spot. She slung her arm over her shoulder and began to massage the sore area. "The older you get...." She said as she scooted to the edge of the bed and hopped off.

She looked at the analog clock that hung on her wall and scoffed. "I have exactly twenty-five minutes to get downstairs." She murmered to herself. "I'm off by five minutes. He could've woke up." She as she rushed into the master bath.

I think you take for granted I'll always be here...

The thirty-some odd man sat at the breakfast table waiting for his fiance to come downstairs. He sighed as he looked at the food that was infront of him and he knew that she wouldn't eat it. She wouldn't even thank him for his hard efforts. 'I just don't know if I can do this anymore. If she keeps pushing me away, how am I suppose to hold her?'

"Hojo? You're up. You could have at least woke me." The voice sounded as it's owner rushed over to coffee machine. "I was almost 5 mintues off schedule. Does that mean anything to you?" She said as she grabbed a cup and poured the vanilla aroma coffee into it.

"Kags, I was just trying to suprise you with breakfast." He said.

"Well,..." She sipped the steamy liquid. "Suprise me on the weekend. You know I was considered for a partnership and I have to behave my best."

"Kagome, you're a very good lawyer. I am sure you'll get partner."

"I do appreciate that, but you are not head of the firm."

He let out a frustrated sigh."I was just trying to help."

"I didn't ask for it."

"Kagome, I don't want to argue. Just...just come sit down and eat breakfast with me."

She set her coffee down. "You know I can't! I have to be at work in..." Kagome glanced at her watch. "an hour and you know how I like a fifteen minute grace period before hand." She walked over to the door and picked up her briefcase. "I can't have my fifteen minutes if I use it guzzling down the fat, meat, starch, and sugar you call a meal." Kagome said as she opened the door.

Just because I love you...

"Kagome, wait!" She turned around. "At least give me a kiss goodbye."

"When I get back. I promise." She said as she rushed out of the door.

"I don't think I can do this anymore."

It doesn't mean I won't disappear.....

Kagome walked into the firm and graced down the hallways until she stopped at a sign that said, Kawasaki, Tsubashi, & Watanabe. 'I've been working at this firm for almost 10 years and now they want to consider me for partner. Kawasaki and Tsubashi are such neanderthals. Just because I'm a woman my name can't stand next to yours? I am one of the main reasons this firm is still standing.'

"One day, your name will be up there."

Kagome jumped and turned around to be faced with her assistant. "Oh, Maeko. You startled me. You know I don't like people sneaking up on me."

"Of course, Ms. Higurashi." She bowed. "Domo Arigato."

"I'll accept that apology if you can get me copies of the Seiko-chan v. State case."

Maeko bowed. "Of course." She said as she skipped off.

Kagome smiled then looked back at the sign. 'Maybe she's right. Maybe...just maybe, I could be...'

"Higurashi!" The voice called. Kagome let out a shriek and jumped at the alarming voice. "Oh, I didn't mean to frighten you. I just wanted to talk. Walk with me" The burly man said as he slung his arm around her shoulder and led her with him down the hall.

"Mr. Watanbe, sir, how was your weekend?" She said looking at her always joyful boss sweaty from the hot humid air in the office.

"It was fine. Just fine. Me and the Mrs. vacationed to a nice resort."

Kagome smiled. "That's great."

"It would've been if she used the lingerie I bought her. Hell, she couldn't even fit into the thing. She went from a size 3 to a size 13. Marriage is code for no more sex." Kagome cringed at the information that her boss just given her. "Oh, but I'm sure that it won't apply to you and your fiance. Hojo Minasei, such a fine young man. How are you two lovebirds doing?"

"Um...well....we're...." 'How are we doing? I should be able to say that we are happy, but I can't. It's like he's not even in my life.' "Good."

"Good? That's it. When me and my wife first got engaged, we we're better than just 'good'."

"Well, you know me...."

The boss stopped in his tracks. "Yes, Ms. Higurashi, I do know you. I know that you're a realist and are about the facts. These are great aspects for a lawyer and a partner at this firm, but those same aspects are the reason why I think your relationship is nothing better than good.I hope you know when to be a lawyer outside of the home and know how to be a wife inside because it's too many newlyweds these days getting divorced early. Me and my wife have been together for 30 years. We may fuss and fight, but I know that our love is so strong it could conquer any obstacle."

Kagome remained quiet. 'Am I really like that? Am I such a realist that I'm neglecting Hojo or am I so used to being alone that I can't function right in a relationship?"

"Ms. Higurashi, I hope you are listening to the advice I am giving you." Mr. Watanabe said as he removed his arm.

"Of course, sir."

"Good. I love your work ethic and listening skills, Higurashi. I keep telling the fellas that we could use a some more xx chromosomes in the field, but you know how male chauvinistic they are."

"Thank you, sir." Kagome said as she bowed her head.

"Don't thank me. Thank yourself for working so hard. I'll see you around, Higurashi." Mr. Watanabe said as he walked off.

Kagome let out a huge sigh due to her nervousness. She had to make partner. It was her number one priority at the time and nothing could take her away from it.

'Except him....'

"Ms. Higurashi! Ms. Higurashi!" Maeko said rushing into the finely furnished office that was Kagome Higurashi.

"Yes, Maeko. What seems to be your urgency?"

"You have a call on line 1." She said winking at her.

"You ran in here to tell me that." Kagome waved her hand dismissively. "Please, leave. I have tons of work to finish." She said burying her face back into her paperwork.

Maeko closed the door to give them a little privacy from the other gossiping assistants.
"It's not just any call. It's him."

Kagome's head snapped up and her eyes went wide. "As in him you mean....?"

Maeko nodded her head. "The one and only. Your one and only. Oh, you guys are like a fairytale." She said looking dreamily into the ceiling.

"We're just friends, Maeko. That's all."

"Yeah, now. Before, you guys were lovers on a neverending quest for happiness."

"Cut it out. We were never on a neverending quest because it ended. It ended because he couldn't adjust to my busy lifestyle, therefore, I had to let him go. End of story."

"Why?!" Maeko whined. "He was so handsome, smart, talented, and did I mention handsome."

"Yes, and well....I...." 'He was handsome. He was smart. He was talented. He's still all of those things. Why did I leave him after 2 long, happy years?' "He asked me the same question, but we remained good friends. Plus, I have a fiance at home"

"Yeah, a dimwit."

Kagome rested her chin her hand. "Yeah, he is kind of a dimwit, but he's a good guy. He fixed me breakfast this morning" 'I didn't even eat it. How selfish of me.' "Aaah!!!" Kagome screamed making Maeko jump.

"What is it?"

"He's still on hold?!" Kagome shouted as she picked up the phone and took a deep breath before she pressed the blinking red button. "Hello?" Her voice calm, sweet and so different from her normal stern, demanding voice 'He changes me'

"Kaggy, how's it going?" The cool voice serened through the receiver.

"InuYasha, you decided to call me?" Kagome said her heart beated faster.

"Of course. I have great news to tell you."

"Really? What?"

"You know how much I care for you, right?"

"Yeah." She breathlessly said. 'My heart....'

"And it took me a really long time to get over you."

'..it's beating so fast.'

"It took me years to try to live without you."

'The butterflies..'

"Well, what I'm really trying to say is...."

'..are flying crazily in my stomach.' "Yes, InuYasha?"

"That I've found someone and well....we're getting married."

The blood drained from Kagome's face and her heart dropped so far it could feel her feet. 'But you're mine. You're suppose...to...be...mine.'

"Hey, Kags? Aren't you happy for me? See now you don't have to worry about me anymore."

Kaogme cleared her throat. “Of course, I’m estatic! When’s the wedding?”

“Next week. I was hoping you could fly out to Fukushima and be there. I know you probably have thousands of things to do since you’re a big shot lawyer, but it would mean the world to me if you would come. Oh, and invite that Homo guy. I never got a chance to meet him.”

“It’s Hojo, InuYasha."

"That's what I said."

"I don’t think I can come, anyway. I’m being considered for partner and I have to me on my P’s and Q’s.”

“Come on, Kags. I need you. You’re my best friend. You just have to be there. Everyone else will.”

“Mmm”

“Please.”

“Mmmm.”

“Please!.”

“Mm mmm!”

“PLEASE!”

“Alright, alright. I’ll...make an appearance.”

“Thanks, kid. See you tomorrow morning.” He said then he hung up the phone.

Kagome slowly placed the phone on it’s cradle and sighed. ‘Why am I so low? Why does it feel like someone ripped my heart out of my chest?’

“So...?”

“Huh?” Kagome said looking into the eyes of her assistant.

“So, what he’d say? Did he confess his undying love for you? Are going to dump that Hojo guy?”

“Maeko.”

“And are you guys going to get married and have me as the maid of honor.”

“Maeko!”

“And are you going to have cute little kids running around and of course I’ll be the godmother and....”

“Maeko, cut it out! He didn’t confess his love. We are not about to get married and we’re not having kids. I don’t even like kids.” Kagome fumed.

“Well, what’d he say?”

“He’s getting married....to someone else.”

Maeko’s face all but cracked. “I’m so sorry, Kagome.”

"Why are you sorry? I'm happy for him. I really am." 'Then why don't I feel happy'
"Maeko, could you give me a moment to myself."

Maeko bowed. "Of course." She said as she walked out of the office leaving Kagome to her thoughts.

'5 years ago.....' "Has it been that long? I'm getting too old for feelings like this."

'Just forget about it. He's gone and you let him go.'

Kagome walked into her house waiting for her greeting from Hojo, but she didn't get one. She walked into the kitchen and nearly tripped over the suitcases that were in her way.

Hojo walked out in the hallway and saw Kagome. He didn't want her to see him leave. He just wanted to be gone when she got there.

"Hojo, what is all of this?"

"My things." He softly said.

"Why are your belongings all packed up? Are you going on a trip?" Kagome could feel the darkness lurking over her heart, but she had to deny it to save face.

"I'm leaving....for good. I'm tired of not being noticed by my own fiance."

"Hojo, what are you talking about? I notice you. Is this about the breakfast because I'll eat the damn breakfast."

"It's not the breakfast, Kagome. It's you! It has always been you. I can't live this way anymore. I thought the shield you kept up was just a front. I thought that if I tried hard enough you would let me in, but I can see that you incapable of that." A horn honked outside. "That's my cab." He said as he picked up the two suitcases and headed towards the door.

Kagome just stood there and looked, watched, and observed as he opened the door.

Hojo turned to see her expression. He shook his head. "Even at a moment like this you can't even shed not one tear. I hope you can find someone that'll have enough energy to love because I don't." With that he left out the door, out of the house, and out of Kagome's life.

She hung her head. He was right. Completely right. 'I'm pathetic. Here I am, nearly thirty, and I still can't keep a man.'
