The Best Mistake

He paced the small waiting room at the doctor's office, his silver hair swaying, dog-ears twitching at every sound. The other patients gave the edgy teen suspicious glances. What was a 17 year old boy doing in a gynecologist's office? Finally, the teen sat in one of the uncomfortable chairs that lined the waiting room. He picked nervously at a growing hole in the knee of his ratty jeans.

The door to the treatment rooms opened silently and the boy looked up. A dark-haired girl walked out, biting her nails and looking quietly at her feet. An older woman followed her out, a comforting hand on the girl's shoulder.

The teen jumped to his feet and crossed the room. He took the girl by the shoulders and wordlessly lifted her head to look at him. Her eyes met his and filled with tears. Realization hit him and he held her close, petting her hair and rocking her gently back and forth.

"Hush, Kagome. It'll be alright. You'll see. Everything will be just fine." He said softly to the crying girl. His voice sounded hollow, even to himself. Nothing was going like it was supposed to. All he could think was, `I'm too young for this!' He guided Kagome out of the waiting room, her mother trailing behind. The door shut and the remaining patients shot knowing looks at each other. They tsk tsked and shook their heads sympathetically.

In the car, Inu Yasha watched Kagome's mother get into her Honda and drive away. He continued to stare out the windshield, not chancing a look at the sniffling girl in the passenger's seat. His hands gripped the top of the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. He looked down at his hands and sighed. He stuck the key in the ignition and started the car. As they pulled out of the parking lot, Inu Yasha tried to gather his thoughts. This wasn't supposed to happen. Not to him. These things happened to other people. People he didn't know. Not to him. Not to him. He was going to college, getting a white-collar job and making lots of money. He and Kagome were going to the same college, getting married and living in a nice house. He was getting out of this town. That was the plan. Not this. This wasn't supposed to happen, he thought resentfully.

He glanced over at Kagome. She was looking out the window as the trees flashed by. He lifted one hand off the steering wheel and hesitantly covered hers, rubbing her palm with his thumb. She looked over at him and smiled weakly.

"I just want you to know, Kagome. I love you." He took her hand in his and lifted it to his lips, kissing it softly. Her smile widened and tears welled in her clear blue eyes.

"I love you too, Inu Yasha."

"This will all work out, you know." He smiled at her. "Don't worry. Please, don't cry anymore. I can't take it when you cry." She hastily wiped her eyes with her free hand.

"I'll try." She whispered.

Two months later, Kagome and her mother sat at their kitchen table looking through scattered books of photos. "I like this one." Her mother pointed to a beautiful white wedding dress. The model glowed in the elaborately decorated garment.

Kagome frowned. "I like this one better." She showed her mother the picture. A dark -haired model wore a long white dress. It was plainer than the one her mother had liked, the hem, square neckline and full-length sleeves were trimmed with lace. It tied in the back, tiny pink silk roses embroidered in the sash. A row of delicate pearl buttons ran down the front. It was beautiful.

Her mother smiled gently. "I like it." She circled the information at the bottom of the catalog page. Kagome sighed and looked back to the guest list she had been reviewing. It was short; it was to be a small wedding. She sighed and rubbed her forehead. The last few weeks had been difficult for her. She had discovered morning sickness, and it did not agree with her. It was many a morning she found herself curled up on the bathroom floor, or hunched over the toilet. Her breasts were also becoming increasingly tender. She had brushed one with her arm yesterday and was surprised at the sore feeling. She was overwhelmingly tired sometimes and always had to go to the bathroom. Inu Yasha was getting annoyed with her mood swings and cravings and, honestly, she couldn't blame him. She was a terror to live with, and she knew it.

She and Inu Yasha had moved into the basement room of her mother's house. Inu Yasha was out right now at work. Kagome was going to continue going to school until she started to show, and then her mother was going to pay for tutoring. She would finish high-school if it killed her. Inu Yasha was going to school in the day and working nights at the garage. He came home around one in the morning and went right to sleep. They hardly saw each other except for a few minutes before school and soon they wouldn't have even that. He slept through most of the weekend as well and Kagome was starting to miss him.

She shook her head and looked back at the florists proposals. This was more money than should be spent on her, but her mother insisted. `It's only once your only daughter gets married!' She had said. Then she eyed Kagome. `I hope.' She added. Kagome was pretty confident that this would work out. Inu Yasha was working hard for them both, trying to earn them enough money to rent a small apartment in the city. She had been indignant when he had told her not to get a job.

"It's my baby too, you know!" she had shouted, fire in her eyes. He had only smiled that annoying patronizing smile and kissed her forehead. "Your only job," he said, "is to keep that baby healthy. Let me do the rest." She had stomped and fumed and nearly shouted the house down, but he wouldn't budge. Arrogant man! She had almost gone out and gotten a job without telling him, but she realized he was probably right, as much as she hated to admit it. She had seen how much sleep he had been getting recently, and she wasn't sure she could function on so little rest. She was tired enough as it was.

It wasn't as though they hadn't planned on getting married after college, but this was so soon! So unexpected, but then again, she supposed these things always were. She had heard the classic teenage mother horror stories. A future unrealized, regrets, unhappiness and so on. But she hoped they would be one of those rare couples that managed to make it work. She prayed every night to keep her little family safe and together.

Kagome glanced up at the clock above the door. 5:30, time for a nap. Kissing her mother on the cheek she headed down to their bedroom. She had just settled down to her rest when she felt the bed give as someone sat down on it. Her eyes flickered open and she saw Inu Yasha sitting on the edge of the bed. She smiled at him and moved to sit up, but he put his hand on her shoulder and shook his head. He lifted his hand up and touched her face gently, running his thumb over her lips. She gave it a feather light kiss. And frowned, realizing something. "Aren't you supposed to be at work?" she asked. He shook his head, still smiling.

"I asked Mura for the day off. I haven't seen you for so long, it feels. He knows the situation, so he let me go." Kagome grinned and pulled him down on top of her. She pulled him in for a long kiss and he participated gladly. His hand slipped up under her linen blouse and gently massaged her breast. She groaned. Her breasts were so sensitive; the feeling was magnified one hundred times. He reached down to unbutton her blouse and then stopped, a worried expression on his face.

"What?" she panted. "Why the hell are you stopping?"

"Could…could I…I might hurt him." Inu Yasha gestured toward her still-flat stomach.

Kagome snorted. "At this point he is about the size of my fingernail. Nothing you could do could hurt him at this point." She cocked her head to the side. "Anyway, who says it's a he? It could be a her." She frowned. "Would you be upset if it was a her?"

Inu Yasha looked shocked. "Of course not! Would you be upset if it was a he?"

Kagome giggled. "No way. As long as it's healthy and whole, I'm happy"

"My thoughts exactly." He grinned. "But it's going to be a he."

"How do you know?"

"Trust me, it's a he."

She sniffed and turned up her nose. "Arrogant man!" He chuckled and bent down to kiss her neck.

Later that night, Inu Yasha held Kagome close, molding his body to hers. She had almost drifted off when a thought came to her and she bolted straight up.

"Inu Yasha! Inu Yasha, wake up!"

He groaned and rolled over. "Mmmm…put a stick in it and be gone…" he mumbled.

"Huh?" Kagome looked at him, puzzled. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"What?" he asked, his voice fuzzy with sleep.

"You said…oh never mind! I just remembered something! I have my first ultrasound appointment next Thursday. Will you be there?"

He blinked sleepily at her. "What time?" he croaked.

"6:00. Please say you'll be there! I don't want to do it alone. Besides, that's when we find out the due date. You do want to know that, don't you?"

"'Course. I'll ask Mura if I can leave work early. He'll understand, his wife's pregnant too."

She clapped her hands together with excitement. "Great! I can stop worrying about that at least." She looked down at him, smiling.

"Great." He rolled over. "Can we go back to sleep now? I can hardly stay awake during school."

She lay back down and put her arm over him, hugging him close. They stayed that way till morning.

Next Thursday rolled around, and before she knew it, Kagome was sitting in Inu Yasha's pick-up. They headed towards the gynecologist's office in silence. Kagome leaned over and turned the radio on.

There's a blood red circle
On the cold dark ground
And the rain is falling down
The church door's thrown open
I can hear the organ's song
But the congregation's gone
My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Now the sweet bells of mercy
Drift through the evening trees
Young men on the corner
Like scattered leaves,
The boarded up windows,
The empty streets
While my brother's down on his knees
My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!

Now there's tears on the pillow
Darlin' where we slept
And you took my heart when you left
Without your sweet kiss
My soul is lost, my friend
Tell me how do I begin again?
My city's in ruins
My city's in ruins

Now with these hands,
With these hands, With these hands,
With these hands, I pray Lord
With these hands, With these hands,
I pray for the strength Lord
With these hands, With these hands,
I pray for the faith, Lord
With these hands, With these hands,
I pray for your love, Lord
Wit
h these hands, With these hands.
The Boss's soulful voice filled the car and Kagome tapped the side of her seat along with the beat. I pray for the strength Lord/ I pray for the faith Lord. Kagome prayed, all the time. Send me strength, God. Please.

Inu Yasha pulled into the familiar parking lot. He stuck the keys in his pocket, jumped out of the truck and ran around the front to open the door for Kagome and help her out. She had to admit, she sort of liked this new, attentive Inu Yasha. They walked together to the office building and he opened the door for her. Yes, she could definitely get used to this.

They walked into the waiting room and Kagome sat down in one of the chairs as Inu Yasha went to talk to the receptionist. "Higurashi Kagome, here to see Dr. Fujikawa."

The receptionist gave him an odd look, but shoved some papers at him. He brought them back to Kagome and handed them to her. She grabbed the ball point pen and began to fill out the forms. Inu Yasha took this opportunity to check out the rest of the patients.

Most were women, obviously, but a few husbands sat with plainly pregnant wives. They all were casting sideways glances at the teenagers. Inu Yasha's exceptional hearing picked up on two women across the room.

"I wonder what she's here for?" whispered one lady in a pink dress, looking slyly at Kagome.

"Isn't it obvious?" muttered the other, a brown haired woman with an amazingly large nose. "Pregnant, I'll bet."

The first woman looked shocked. "But she's only a kid!"

Big Nose nodded knowingly. "It doesn't matter. See that guy with her? He's probably the guy who did it."

The guy who did it?! Inu Yasha felt the anger well up.

Big Nose went on. "Kids these days. Those teenage girls will sleep with just about anyone. Then something like this happens. It's their own fault, you know."

The armrest on Inu Yasha's chair gave a loud crack as his hand snapped the flimsy plastic.

Big Nose and her friend looked over at him, puzzled. They met his eyes, flashing with fury. The lady in the pink dress squeaked and busied herself with her handbag and Big Nose looked away.

Kagome had also looked up at him, and was now in the process of peeling his fingers off the broken armrest. "Inu Yasha? What's wrong with you?"

He looked back at her and forced a smile. No need to tell her about that kind of crap. "Nothing, baby. I'm just nervous, I guess." She smiled back.

"I know what you mean. I'm terrified."

One of the nurses poked her head out of the treatment rooms. "Higurashi Kagome? The doctor will see you now." Kagome stood up and Inu Yasha followed behind. When they got to the nurse, she stopped Inu Yasha. "You can't go in their sir. We have a privacy policy."

"No no," Kagome shook her head. "He can come in."

The nurse frowned. "I'm sorry, but we only allow the expecting parents into the ultrasound sessions."

Inu Yasha shouldered his way in front of Kagome and looked down at the nurse. He had had enough of this crap. "We are the parents." He ground out. The nurse looked up at him with surprise. She gaped for while.

"Oh…well, in that case. Come right in." She stepped back and Inu Yasha pushed past her, dragging Kagome behind him.

A/N: Dun dun dun! I decided to write a story about teen pregnancy because I really think those teen mothers are so strong. I'm not saying I approve or anything, but the ones who old it all together have got to be very brave. If you're wondering how this whole pregnant situation came about, stay tuned, I'll explain. God, I wish I had a guy that considerate. It would make the whole pregnancy thing a whole lot easier, I bet.
