CHAPTER 2: meetings and introductions

"Daddy! Daddy! Yay!" the tiny girl squealed. She hopped from one foot to the other looking as though her miniscule body might explode under the weight of her own joy. Kagome felt her jaw drop, as she comprehended the existence of two pointy crème colored dog-ears that twitched excitedly atop her head. They were slightly tinier versions of the ones that swiveled on Inuyasha's head as he tried to wrap his mind around the girl in his lap, not quite believing his eyes.

The child seemed quite real enough when she almost fell over the side of the well in her efforts to burrow into the larger hangout's stomach. She began to teeter unknowingly on the stone rim until finally her feet slipped on the damp surface and she shrieked again, this time with sheer terror as she began to fall back into the darkness. Kagome heard herself gasp as her hand shot out to save the tiny demon, almost on instinct. Though the Miko's worry wasn't needed as a clawed hand closed around a tiny foot and a still very confused Inuyasha gently placed the girl on the grass in front of them. The child's eyes were scrunched shut with her hands balled into tiny fists while she awaited her doom. After a few moments she opened her eyes and sighed when she found that she was unharmed. Her nose tipped and she took in tiny puffs of air. Suddenly her eyes grew twice as large and she wheeled around to launch herself at an overwhelmed Kagome.

“Oh mommy! I was wondering where you were! Toushi will be so happy when he finds you. OOO and Mari will faint for sure!” Kagome caught the child with ease, quite used to Shippo's antics, but this was just too much. Kagome looked over at Inuyasha to find his eyes as large as the ones staring up at her. She tried to speak but the only thing that passed the Miko's lips was a very high pitched squeaking noise that caused both pairs of dog ears to flatten in the exact same way. Feeling very dizzy Kagome set the child down and tried to grasp any reality in the current situation. Searching in vain, and Inuyasha still unable to move Kagome sighed and very slowly looked down and before trying again to speak. “Who are you?”
- Oh no! It wasn't supposed to come out like that! Great Kags. How could you be so heartless?!- Her face fell as she watched the child's eyes grow large and wet.

The tiny girl flew away from her perch on the sailor skirt as though the older girl had burned her. She landed with expert grace on her haunches. Leaning on the balls of her feet she shot up and stood stock straight in front of the priestess and red clad swordsman. It gave the pair their first good look at the child.

The girl was about six years old. She was small even for her age. The kimono she wore was a dark navy blue with tiny cherry blossoms running down the left side and tied with a sash of the same pink caliber. The fabric seemed to swallow her body and she had to pull back the sleeve hiding her tiny balled, clawed hand that wiped away a stray tear as it raced down her pale skin. Her crème ears that had once been so perky lay flat atop her head. They were almost hidden in the layers of silver hair that flowed around her shoulders and down her back. She lowered her head in an attempt to hide her trembling lip but not before they got a good view of the pair of deep brown eyes that were currently puffy from the tears that were streaming with restless abandon.

Kagome felt like she was going to pass out. Inuyasha had moved next to her to get a better look at the “attacker”. He made sure he was ready to catch her, though he wasn't sure how much more of this he could handle. It was like seeing a ghost. - She looks exactly like me! All except for the eyes, I think those are Kagome's. What the hell am I doing! There is no way in the seven hells this is my kid! It just can't be! - He was snapped out of his thoughts when he noticed Kagome's hand tugging his own. He looked down with questioning eyes.

“ What do you smell?”

“Huh?” he was lost.

“What does she smell like?” Kagome sighed muttering about poor confused puppies.

“Hey…” Inuyasha let the puppy dog comment slide when he realized that his nose was being bombarded with a scent he had never felt before. It was new but familiar somehow. He inhaled the air more deeply and staggered when the smell of salt water nearly burned his nose off. Inuyasha widened his eyes as he found it coming from the little girl a few feet away. The elder hanyou moved closer to the girl until he was only a few inches away from her shuddering shoulders. He inhaled one last time and brought his nose into the ruff of her bangs. The action tickled her forehead and the child began giggling slightly between hiccupped gasps. Satisfied with his search, the half demon strode back to the curious priestess with a hypnotized expression.

He strode past Kagome and sat with folded arms against the well. His eyes never left the crying girl as she strengthens the biting smell of salt in the air. He sighed and looked up at Kagome whose eyes were so clearly mirrored in this other demon. He opened his mouth and whispered so she almost didn`t hear, “Smells like water lilies.” He looked up with his eyes dancing in a nameless state of contemplation, deeper than she'd ever seen in her hanyou. “She smells like water lilies and ramen.” He felt any reasons he had for denying the obvious melt out of him. He looked up at his miko and was surprised to see her nod as though it was to be expected. She leaned close to one pointed ear, “Her aura is almost identical to yours. Not to mention her appearance. ” She cocked her head in the general direction of the topic of conversation, laughing as golden irises got too big for the rest of his face. With a large grin complementing her face she left Inuyasha to his thoughts as she skidded across the grass.

The snow haired child was still shuddering as Kagome dropped to her knees beside her. The time traveler gently placed a hand on the child's back and mentally kicked herself as the weeping girl flinched. The miko felt her heart start to break. Kagome felt like dirt as the recent knowledge flew around in her head like a captured bird. - She is my daughter, I have a daughter! Kami this girl is my child and I don't know her name! - Kagome felt her stomach turn to lead and she felt the heat of her own tears burn behind her eyes. “Don't cry, oh please don't cry, I hate to see my friends cry,” the Miko gasped as she felt the pressure of a small head resting on her shoulder. Looking down to hands were grasped firmly around her neck and said head burrowed deeper into her shoulder while the rest of the hiccupping girl fit perfectly on her lap. Chocolate eyes looked up into their predecessor's with curiosity.

“You mean we can be friends?” she asked almost afraid to hope.
“M'hm”, Kagome tickled her belly sending her daughter into a fit of hiccups and giggles.

“Even though I'm a hanyou?” The child's tone was soft and held such sadness Kagome felt the breath fly out of her. Inuyasha was there in an instant. He snatched the child up by the scruff of her kimono and before Kagome could blink, the child was placed securely in his arms. Kagome's hand flew to her mouth as she noticed his eyes were taking on a shiny look. He stared down at the child, his child. Her eyes were doe like and her body was stiff with fear as she stared back. He brought his nose down to meet hers and tickled her with an Eskimo kiss. Kagome bit back shock at this act of affection. Inuyasha, still clutching his daughter in his arms, sat cross-legged next to his Miko friend and whispered softly into the hair that was so like his own. “It don't ever matter to us. If anything ya fit in better that way...” his tone was as soft as her's had been. The girl let out a large sigh and settled herself in the sea of red.

“You know we still haven't been properly introduced.” Kagome said still in awe of the emotion the elder hanyou had just displayed. “I'm Kagome and this big idiot is Inuyasha.” she winked causing another wave of giggles to shake the girl as she saw the peeved expression of the man holding her.

The tiny girl shot up and out of Inuyasha's lap, smoothing the folds of her kimono.
She smiled a grin that revealed a pair of razor sharp fangs. She puffed out the hair in her eyes and with a deep breath, “My name is…”

The girl was interrupted by a huge crash in the forest.
