It's been almost a week; a few days after she ended it with Sesshomaru she received a note saying a job well done. Now she sits brokenly at a lunch table playing with her food. In the distance she can see all her old friends sitting around Sesshomaru trying to cheer him up. They had all left her, saying she changed and it wasn't for the better. A tear rolled down her cheek, it seemed that happened all the time now. `Gods how I miss them, how I miss him,' she picked up her stuff and ran out the door past her old friends trying to get somewhere private before she completely broke down.
Everyone noticed how Sesshomaru's gaze followed Kagome as she ran through the cafeteria. Sango was sick of it, she stood up intent on talking some sense into Kagome. "I'll be back," she said and followed after Kagome.
She found her weeping in an empty classroom; her whole frame shook with every sob. "Kagome" Sango whispered.
Kagome looked up, and Sango was shocked, she didn't look like Kagome at all, everything about her looked dead. "I know you hate me now and I don't blame you," Kagome said as tears continued to run twin rivers down her face.
"Kagome I just don't understand how you could do that to him, I thought you loved him." Sango said
Kagome cried harder and in between sobs Sango heard her say, "I…love…him so…much…it…hurts." Kagomes' sobs quieted and she looked back up at Sango with pain-filled eyes. "But I can't be with him, I wish I could but I can't"
"Why not?" Sango just wanted to slap some sense into her because she wasn't making any.
Kagome forced herself to stop crying, "at the party while you guys were watching the movie, I found Sessh underneath Kagura."
Sango gasped she never thought she would gasp in her life but this had truly shocked her.
Kagome continued, "she had him blindfolded, he thought she was me, I went to stop her and she pulled a knife on him. I got her off him but she managed to get the knife to my throat." She paused and controlled her breathing trying her hardest not to cry again. "She told me if I didn't get out of his life by the next night she'd kill him." Kagome said.
"So you just gave up, you just left him with out a fight?" Sango couldn't believe any of it, she knew Kagome wouldn't make it up but for her to not fight for Sesshomaru was unheard of until now.
"And risk having him killed, what if I stayed, if I was selfish, and she killed him, or had someone else kill him, I so couldn't live with that." Kagome almost yelled, "please tell me he's okay that he's getting over me." Kagome pleaded.
"I can't tell you that, because it's not true, he's so upset, he came back and almost killed himself, did you know that? We have to have someone always around him because we're afraid he'll kill himself." Sango said, she was getting angry now. "You think staying with him would be selfish, go take a good look at him, you're being selfish now, he's hurting so much and we can't do anything about it."
Kagome was crying, the hardest she ever did, she hurt her Sesshomaru the way Kagura did and now there was no turning back. "I wish I could go back to him, but I, she'll…"
"No you're gunna find a way, and I'll help, we'll get a restraining order or something but first you have to fix this." Sango said.
Kagome nodded, "I'll try but I doubt he'll take me back, I kind of made sure he would never talk to me again."
"He'll take you back, he just needs a little persuasion," Sango had a light bulb came on above her head; Kagome saw it in her eyes.
"What do you think I should do?" Kagome asked.
Sango told Kagome her plans and they began to make preparations for Friday night.
* * * * * * * *
Sango spent the rest of the day telling everyone except Sesshomaru the new information. They all seemed to understand and were willing to help Sango and Kagome with Sangos' plan.
Friday was Karaoke night at the school, where everyone could belt their hearts out and release stress from school and work. It took everyone at least two hours to convince Sesshomaru to come with them. Sango was singing that night as she always did and insisted that he come to cheer her on since he has never seen her perform.
Kagome sat nervously in the shadowed area of the auditorium, she had signed up to sing and immediately hid so when her friends arrived Sesshomaru wouldn't see her. She had butterflies in her stomach, she knew she had really fucked up with Sesshomaru but the way Sango talked, hope started to arise in her that they still had a chance.
She saw them walk in, Sesshomaru walked with his head high behind the rest of them, to most people he looked regal, better than everyone else, to her, she couldn't ignore the pain he was radiating. They sat in a corner far from Kagome facing the stage so unless they really looked for her they would never know she was there.
"Sango I'm leaving right after you're done, I don't feel like being out tonight." Sesshomaru informed her.
Sango gave him puppy dog eyes, "please Sesshomaru stay out with us just this once, and I'll never bother you again."
He wanted to argue, being around so many cheery people just made him more depressed, but she was trying so hard to cheer him up. "Just this once," he agreed.
"Thank you," she said placing a hand over his for a moment.
They sat around for a good half hour listening to people drone songs out until Sango was finally called up to stage. The regulars cheered, her voice was great and they always had a good time when she was there to entertain them.
She got up to the mic, "this song is called That's What She Said by Brian Littrell and its dedicated to a good friend of mine that I hope feels a little better after tonight." The song started and she waited for her cue.
*Yeah yeah yeah yeah
there are people who say what you wanna hear
even on a rainy day they'll tell you the sky is clear
when you really really love someone am i right
when i say that you want them near
and if you care you even tell them things
that they wanna hear*
Kagome knew this was the plan but the song still made her feel like scum, `to think I used to love this song.' She thought to herself as she stared longingly at Sesshomaru.
*always for ever
one thing she said
never say never
the simple lies that she said
i will never leave you
all the love i thought she had
but can you blame me no
cause thats what she said
thats what she said
she told me we'd see forever
thats what she said she said yeah*
`I thought this was supposed to cheer me up?' Sesshomaru thought to himself, `I miss her.'
*there are people
who say what they really mean
she said she'd always be there
she said she'd always care
but jsut when you think that you can trust that someone you love
tell me why do i know that stars can fall from above*
Inuyasha put a hand on Sesshomarus' shoulder, hoping to lend a little comfort.
*always forever
one thing she said
never say never
those simple lies that she said
i will never leave you
all the love i thought she had
but can you blame me no
mm
cause thats what she said
thats what she said
she told me we'd see forever
thats what she said
ooh ooh ohho yeah
thats what she said
she told me we'd be togethter
thats what she said she said*
`Kagome were they all lies, did I really mean nothing to you?' He couldn't get those questions out of his head.
*cause you made promises that you couldn't keep (ooo)
but you're not hurting yourself
you're only hurting me
why would you say things that you really didn't mean
oh how can i make you see just what you did to me*
`Would you even care if you saw me, how much hurt you caused me?' He put his head in his hands.
*ooh you said how much you really care
just when i thought i was in love
girl how could you care
if i were you i could not lie even once to the face of the one
that i love so much
always forever
one thing she said
never say never
those simple lies she said
i will never leave you
all the love i thought she had.
but can you blame me no
mm
cause thats what she said
thats what she said
she told me we're see forever
thats what she said
ooh ooh yeah
thats what she said
she told me we'd be together.
oh thats what she said.*
Sango thanked everyone as they cheered and headed back to the table, sitting down next to Miroku and giving Sesshomaru apologetic looks.
The announcer got up on stage, "Another great performance from our lovely Sango," he paused as everyone cheered again. "Now we have a new person for the stage everyone please give a warm welcome to Kagome Higurashi."
The moment her name entered Sesshomarus' ears he got up to leave, everyone tried to stop him but he pushed their hands away. He was almost out the door when he heard her voice. "Please don't leave." He stopped and turned to see her pleading eyes on him. "This song is dedicated to you, I just want you to know how sorry I am for hurting you."
The music for "White Flag" from Dido started. He was ready to leave again but her voice held him in place.
*I know you think that I shouldn't still love you or tell you that.
But if I didn't say it well I'd still have felt it,
where's the sense in that
I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were but*
Tears started coming down her cheeks as she sang.
* I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door,
I'm in love and always will be*
`Why is she doing this?' Sesshomaru thought to himself. He felt a hand on his arm, and found Sango trying to lead him back to the table. He complied.
I know I left too much mess and destruction to come back again
And I caused but nothing but trouble,
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over" then I'm sure that that makes sense but*
She watched as he sat down in his seat never taking his eyes from hers. She concentrated hard on keeping her voice steady.
* I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door,
I'm in love and always will be*
He felt the tears brimming in his eyes and tried to fight them back.
* And when we meet, which I'm sure we will
All that was there, will be there still
I'll let it pass, and hold my tongue
And you will think, that I've moved on.... *
`But I love you too much to let you go, I won't let Kagura win, I can't' Kagome thought to herself as she continued to sing through her tears, she noticed he was crying too. She just wanted to stop and wipe his tears away.
* I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door,
I'm in love and always will be*
She took the mic off the stand and started making her way toward him.
* I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door,
I'm in love and always will be*
He stayed frozen as she came up to him, watched as she extended a hand toward his face, but she stopped mere inches from the tears on his face, not knowing if she should go farther or not.
* I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door,
I'm in love and always will be*
He tried to fight it, but in the end he leaned into her hand, tears coming down faster than before. She wiped his tears away took the mic away from her mouth, "I'm sorry Sessh what I said that day, I didn't mean any of it, I'll always love you."
Before he could react she had retreated back to the stage given back the mic and fled the auditorium. Sango put a hand on his and whispered in his ear, "go hear what she has to say."
"Why?" he asked refusing to acknowledge the tears on his face.
"Because she made you happy," Inuyasha said.
Sesshomaru sighed and got up to search for Kagome.
* * * * * * * *
It didn't take long to find her; he could hear the heart wrenching sobs the moment the auditorium door closed behind him.
He found her inside the girls bathroom, curled in a corner crying her heart out. She looked up when she heard the door close and then put her head back down crying even harder. "I'm so sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she sobbed over and over again.
He took a step closer to her then stopped, `she hurt me why should I comfort her.'
"So you decided Hojo wasn't good enough for you either." He voice was harsh and he saw her cringe at the remark.
"We never went out, he just happened to be there when I saw you," she confessed, her head still resting on her knees. "I had to, I had no choice, I'm sorry."
"You're lying no one held a gun to your head you didn't have to." Sesshomaru spat at her.
Kagome stopped crying and looked up at him, she found his eyes holding no anger just betrayal, she didn't know which she preferred. "No I didn't have a gun to my head, but I did have a knife to my throat." She told him, trying to tell him with her eyes that she wasn't lying.
"What are you talking about?" He was so confused.
"Do you remember what happened at the party?" Kagome asked.
He shook his head, "no I don't remember much."
"At the end of the night we all went in to watch a movie, you had went back outside for some reason. When I found you, you were with Kagura…" She told him the whole story; everything that happened between her Kagura and Kikyo. Sesshomaru felt sick, his knees were weak; he tried to stay standing but eventually slid down against the wall opposite of Kagome.
"Kagura," he whispered, `I wouldn't put it past her, and I don't think Kagome would lie about this, but how can I trust her?'
"I know, I know it sounds like I'm making it up but I'm not, Sessh I don't want you to get hurt again by her, if she killed you because I stayed with you, I couldn't live with myself." She said the tears came back, :I'd rather you hate me then have her kill you."
"I'm not that easy to kill," he said.
"I didn't want to chance that." Kagome said.
"What changed?" he asked.
"Sango confronted me, I told her everything, she said she would help me figure a way to keep you safe, she said, she said…" She couldn't continue, she didn't want to tell him she knew how badly she hurt him.
"What did she say?" Sesshomaru asked.
"She said you tried to… kill yourself. Oh Sessh please tell me you didn't, I want you to live, I didn't know what else to do, please."
"I can't tell you I didn't, Kagome I love you so much when you said that to me all I wanted to do was die." He didn't know why he told her, but he had never lied to her before, he didn't know how to now.
She stood up and launched herself at him hugging him as tight as she could, "I'm sorry, I love you, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry." She sobbed into him and all his walls came crashing down, he wrapped his arms around her and cried all the hurt and pain out.
They held each other and cried until they couldn't cry anymore and then they just sat there holding each other like there was no tomorrow.
She pulled back and brushed the drying tears from him face, looking into his eyes, hesitantly she asked, "Is there anyway you could forgive me?"
He looked into her eyes and couldn't find anything but sincerity, "I don't know, but I want to try." He whispered putting his forehead against hers and closing his eyes, taking in her scent the feel of her in his arms. `I'll try really hard.'
"Thank you," she whispered, she noticed he was beginning to fall asleep and giggled; he opened his eyes looking at her quizzically.
"I think you need some sleep, can I walk you to your car?" She asked hopefully.
"Miroku drove," he said.
"Oh then why don't I give you a ride home?" She suggested.
He nodded and let her go when she stood up, she put out a hand for him to take, he smiled and wrapped his slender fingers around her petite hand. They walked hand in hand to the car, he fell asleep almost immediately after getting into her car, her scent completely relaxing him. He hadn't really slept since that day, always trying to find her warmth to help him sleep. She wasn't much better, but it helped her to know he was safe.
She drove to his house while he slept in the passenger seat, she pulled up the driveway and parked the car. "Hey sleepy you're home," she said nudging him.
His eyes opened and he looked into hers, "stay tonight?" he asked, "Not with me but in your room, I miss having you in the house."
She nodded, "I know what you mean," She said. They walked into the house and up the stairs. She said goodnight to him after seeing him into his room, then went to the guest room she used to occupy.
She opened the door to find that nothing was moved except it looked like someone had slept in the bed a few times after she left, at first se thought it was one of their friends staying over to watch him but when she rested her head on the pillow she was engulfed in Sesshomarus' scent. Slowly she drifted to sleep only to be woken a little while later when a pair of warm arms wrapped around her body and pulled her close to a hard chest. She kissed his arm and went back to sleep.
