Prologue

 

Kagome screamed as the blades flew just an inch from her face. Scrambling up from where she fell, she hurriedly grabbed her bow and arrow from the blood soaked earth. Running from the decimated village she heard Sango's battle cry behind her, before the taijiya's body was thrown effortlessly into the air, and came crashing down just in front of her. Kagome's eyes shot wide in horror at the site of her dear friends mutilated corpse as she heard the horrid, hungry howls coming from behind her. `Why!' her inner voice screamed. `Why is this happening?'

The gut wrenching howl rose up around her, threatening to paralyze whatever sanity she had left. Running for the forest, she felt her leg snag on something before crashing to the ground. Turning to see what she tripped on, tears sprang from her eyes. There at her feet lay Shippo, his small body butchered by the monster that now pursued her. `All her friends were dead. Miroku was the first to perish under the beasts' sharp claws and fangs. And poor, dear Keade never even saw it coming as her village was instantly eradicated. All of them, and it was here fault.'

Kagome's breath hitched as she felt the creature just behind her. Turning and notching her arrow in one swift motion, she shot the demon through the heart from just a foot away. Its fiery eyes widened in shock as it felt the purifying arrow pierce it's flesh. `It was the only way,' Kagome thought to herself, the madness enclosing her as she watched the youkai disintegrate before her eyes.

Collapsing to her knees, Kagome leaned forward with her last ounce of strength and picked up the only thing remaining from the beast she had to destroy. Clutching the rosary to her chest, Kagome's last coherent thought was `I hope you find peace InuYasha,' before the blackness claimed her.
