Chapter Two: Remnant of the Past

Yoru found himself facing a great tree, the ancient bark scarred and chipped. With a will of their own his feet carried him closer to the behemoth and his eyes traveled its worn body. He could feel the pain this tree had witnessed, but just as fast as the thought came, it flew away on the suddenly chill wind. Goosebumps spiked his flesh as the forest around him cried out in despair. Were the trees screaming?…

…No that can't be it…but what could it…

…tortured cries rang through wood and earth. The ground began to tremble beneath his feet as he heard something approaching…rapidly. Willing his legs to move, he ran from the encroaching nightmare behind him. Howling cries reverberated around him. His blood racing through his veins, his feet carried him even faster towards…

…What? Safety? Home? Where was he?

Breaking from the trees, he found himself in a dark clearing. `But how can I see, if it is dark? Feeling the hairs at the base of his neck raise, he moved forward and crashed into something. The pain already shooting through his legs as he looked down at his assailant. Eyes focusing, he saw what appeared a void in the earth.

No, it's a…it's a well. But how did I not see it bef…

…hot breath blazed against the flesh of his neck and he knew the thing was behind him. Mustering his courage, he turned slowly and found himself face to face with…

Hand clutching at his chest, Yoru awoke, heart speeding like a jackhammer. Ragged gasps escaped his lungs as he sat up on the hard floor. Sweat dripped from dark locks to fall on his legs and feet. “What the fucking hell was that?” He managed to say hoarsely. Running hands through the dampness that was his hair, he cringed as he touched the spot he felt the things breath on. Pulling his hand back, he swallowed when he saw his palm, the sliver of light entering from the curtained window illuminating the sticky, hot blood that streaked it. Something else shimmered in the light. Yoru's pulse quickened as he saw a single strand of silver hair. “What the fuck is happening?” He choked as his vision swam. Blood fell in tiny droplets down his chest as his world grew dark and a single menacing voice boomed throughout his skull, “KAGOME IS MINE!”
