Chapter 11: Enter Kikyo and Sindel

Last time:

Shadow growled again; only to have it echoed by Sesshomaru, but this battle was not to be. A high pitched whistling rang through the trees behind Shadow. Her ears swiveled to listen better, but as she turned her head to look, a sacred arrow embedded itself in her back. Her eyes widened as she dropped her sword, her mouth falling open in a silent scream. The arrow in her back flared a brilliant blue as Shadow's eyes glowed brightly, but then the arrow's powers dissipated and Shadow's eyes closed as she fell forward, unconscious.

Sesshomaru rushed forward to catch her as the rest of the group members either scrambled to grab weapons or rushed to Shadow's side. Death Strike knelt by her sister, growling loudly as her eyes blazed. Koga and Kagome stood by her side as InuYasha sniffed the arrow, Miroku, Jaken, and Sango stood with weapons ready, by Shippo and Rin; Kirara and AhUn standing to either side of the monk and demon slayer.

“Kikyo…” InuYasha growled…

Kikyo materialized from between two great oaks at the edge of the clearing; bow in hand, a second arrow readied. Sesshomaru clutched Shadow closer to his chest as he growled at the undead miko. InuYasha stepped forward, his own growl joining his brother's, only to have them both drowned out as Shadow shrieked in pain. Death Strike sat back on her haunches staring at the now powerless arrow lying on her palm as Sesshomaru's eyes reddened and he gathered the injured inu-ookami closer to his chest. InuYasha glanced over his shoulder long enough to see Kagome shred a piece of her shirt and use it to stem the flow of blood from her cousin's back before he turned his attention back to Kikyo.

Sniffing gently, he realized something was different about his old love, but he couldn't place it. He watched as Kikyo ignored him and stepped forward with her second arrow aimed at the kneeling Kagome; without thinking he moved to step between them and then it hit him…Kikyo had a heartbeat…he could hear it! His eyes widened and his guard faltered. In that moment, Kikyo adjusted her aim and let loose her arrow.

“NO!” he cried as he jumped into the arrows path. His eyes closed as his pack members gasped behind him. I'm sorry Kagome he thought as he awaited the arrows impact, but it never came. The sound of wood splintering and a loud, deep growl met his ears as he hit the ground hard. He grunted and opened his eyes…to have them meet a dark brown wolf's backside. It glanced over its shoulder at him and he saw Kikyo's arrow crushed between the canine's teeth. Flicking its ears up for a moment, its gaze locked with his before it dropped the arrow from its mouth and turned back to the once undead miko. InuYasha bound to his feet and stood beside the wolf, amazed by how large the creature was; it stood nearly to his waist. He'd never seen a wolf so large.

“Hey Koga, you can call your pack mate off; thanks,” InuYasha called over his shoulder.

“He isn't mine,” squeaked Koga.

Kikyo was temporarily forgotten as InuYasha turned to the rest of the group, and found two more of the giant wolves behind him. Again his eyes widened.

Kikyo let her second arrow fly, aiming for the bitch that was her reincarnation…the bitch that had stolen InuYasha from her. She watched as InuYasha jump in front of it in the attempt to save his new mate and her eyes narrow. Fool, she thinks, but before the arrow could strike a large dark brown and grey wolf materializes from a tear in the air. It crushes the arrow between its jaws as is stands protectively over the hanyou. Two other wolves appear behind it and Kikyo exhales with a soft hiss. Upon hearing the ookami youkai's statement that the wolves did not belong to him, Kikyo turns and disappears into the trees. Another time…she thinks as she walks away.

Kagome, still pressing cloth to Shadow's bleeding back, stared at the wolves that had suddenly appeared. She had noted that they came through a gateway like her cousins' used, but neither had opened one. Swallowing hard, she looked them over. There were two males: one dark brown and grey, the other black; and one silvery-white female. Each was the size of small pony and rather intimidating just standing there. Finally Death Strike broke the lingering silence.

“Thank you for saving him, Darkstar,” the neko said as she turned to the brown wolf beside InuYasha.

“No thanks required, Lady,” replied the wolf as it dropped to its haunches.

Bright orange eyes watched the group from the edge of the clearing. Hidden is the dense foliage of the tree she perched in, she watches the events unfold. She hissed softly as Kikyo's arrow failed to kill the Guardian, but found it interesting when the inu-youkai male gathered her to his chest protectively and then had the audacity to growl at the sister. Her eyes narrowed and she hissed again as she watched Kikyo take a shot at someone other than the Guardian.

“Damn that woman,” she hissed softly as she watched the arrow soar towards a younger female Demon Fae. She noted the similarities between Kikyo and the new target and surmised that she must be the `bitch reincarnation' that Kikyo has spoken of. She wasn't surprised when a gateway snapped open moments later; nor was she surprised when the Great Wolves made their appearance. She sighed, “Every fucking time….”

“Should I deal with the wolvessssss while you finish off the Guardian, Missstressssssss?” a soft voice hissed from below her.

“No, Precious. We will deal with them later. Come,” she replied as she slipped from her perch and dropped silently to the ground. Together, the female and her companion slunk silently away.

Kagome's eyes nearly popped out of her head as the wolf spoke. She gasped along with the rest of her companions, but was deeply grateful to the brown wolf for saving her mate. When the white female walked to her side and sat down, Kagome was again taken by surprise.

“That wound would be more easily treated if Lady Shadow's shirt were removed,” the she-wolf stated as Kagome stared stupidly at the creature.

When Kagome didn't react to the wolf's request, Sesshomaru took matters into his own hands. With a growl, he shoved the miko away and then shredded the offending shirt from the Demon Fae's back. Another growl rose in his throat as he realized the bleeding had neither stopped, nor slowed since the arrows removal. He made to grab the bloodied cloth from Kagome's hand in order to press it back against the wound, but the she-wolf stopped him.

“Not what I meant, but it works, none the less,” she said as she stepped forward to survey Shadow's back, “I do not think that the Lady will require stitches, although the wound is deep. Do you have butterfly bandages and something to wrap this with?” The wolf turned to Kagome, who was slowly coming out of her stupor. Realizing what the wolf wanted she nodded once.

“I'll get them,” she replied hurriedly as she sprang to her feet and dashed over to her bag.

InuYasha and Sango both moved to take Shadow from the taiyoukai's arms, in order to help Kagome bandage the still unconscious girl, but his menacing growl made them pause.

“Let's just give them some space, shall we?” Death Strike said softly as she grasped Sango's arm and pulled her back a few steps. The two males wolves followed Death Strike's example and herded everyone else back some as Kagome hurried back with the required medical supplies.

The wolf nodded her approval as Kagome sank back to her knees at her cousin's side. Turning back to Shadow, the she-wolf moved her muzzle closer to the arrow wound and again Sesshomaru growled in warning.

“I'm just going to remove some of the blood from her back and cleanse the wound. It will make the bandaging easier. Do not worry…I will not hurt her,” the she-wolf reassured him softly as she flicked her tongue over Shadow's back. The wolf cleaned away the blood and then ran its tongue over the wound and Shadow hissed in pain. Sesshomaru reacted swiftly by shoving the offended wolf away and snarling at it; his fangs bared.

“You're hurting her…and your saliva will infect the injury,” he growled at the wolf; only to be slightly surprised when the wolf snarled right back at him.

“Unfortunately, she will feel some discomfort until she awakens and heals herself,” the wolf snapped back through bared fangs, “I would do nothing that would endanger the life of my Chosen. I carry the gift of healed, and my saliva…much like your own….carries healing properties. Now let me tend to my Mistress!”

Kagome had to force herself not to cringe as the wolf growled loudly as the taiyoukai before stepping forward again to finish laving the blood from Shadow's back. Once finished, Kagome noticed that the wound continued to bleed, but it had slowed some and she sighed in relief.

“Now pinch the wound together so that the edges are just touching, like you would if you were planning on stitching in, and then place the butterfly bandages,” the wolf instructed Kagome, “Quickly, while there is very little blood on the skin!”

Startled, Kagome jumped slightly before complying with the wolf's demand. Swiftly she pinched the wound closed and placed the butterfly bandages. After them, Kagome applied a large square sterile pad which she tacked in place with medical tape before clearing her throat.

“We need to sit her up and remove the rest of her shirt so that I can wrap with around her to hold the bandages in place,” Kagome said with a glance at Sesshomaru.

She held up a roll of cloth for his inspection and he growled softly, but complied with her request. As gently as he could, he maneuvered Shadow into a semi-erect position and shredded the last of the offending garment from her skin. Kagome worked quickly, wrapping the bandage snuggly around Shadow's abdomen. When she was done, she sat back and sighed. All they could do not was wait for Shadow to wake up.

Kikyo's feet followed an unknown path as she involuntarily followed the summons deep in her mind. Although she tried to resist, her path never altered. She hissed softly as she once again realized that she was a slave to something else's will. First it had been the Shikon no Tama that had bound her freedom when she had lived over half a century ago. Now this creature kept her from her revenge, her freedom…her ordinary life now that she lived again.

Entering a clearing, Kikyo's hard chocolaty brown eyes beheld the creature that held her spirit captive. This woman could only have come from the deepest levels of Hell, she thought as she sneered at the creature before her.

Waves of unruly orange tresses fell like a waterfall of flame around her shoulders and down her back. Its crimson and yellow accents making it look like living fire as the locks lifted and danced in the slight breeze. Hell's flames blazed in the woman's unearthly orange eyes as she watched Kikyo approach. Her black draconic wings lay caped around her shoulders, their blood red edges hidden with the folds of the massive appendages. The woman's enormous Noble Snake, known only as `Precious' to Kikyo, was with her as always. His giant head rested serenely upon her shoulder as, beneath her wings, his massive body curled itself lovingly around his mistress's. The part of his tail that lay on the ground resting in a large arc around her feet, and as she lifted a hand to scratch the monster serpent's head, that tail lashed against the ground happily. His tongue flicked out and along the woman's cheek in an adoring caress and the corner of her mouth twitched upward in a half smile, revealing one long, delicate canine.

“Kikyo,” the orange haired woman said as she narrowed her eyes. She continued to pet the snake as a small, evil grin slithered across her features.

“Sindel…”

InuYasha glanced to where his brother sat with his back against a tree; a still unconscious Shadow cradled protectively in his arms. The three Noble Wolves, part of Shadow's pack they had come to learn, had taken up positions lying nearby while Rin sat beside the taiyoukai and caressed Shadow's hair.

When Shadow had not awoken by evening, the group had re-established camp in the clearing. Dinner was long past over now and the companions were settling down for sleep. Death Strike and Kagome had attempted to bed down beside their cousin, but Sesshomaru's warning growls had driven them back. Now they lay as close as the taiyoukai would allow…which wasn't very close at all.

He sat with Koga a short distance from their mates and they shared a glance. Both males knew that the girls were just worried over their pack member, but they also knew that Sesshomaru was in `protect mate' mode. The taiyoukai would not allow anyone near Shadow…with some exceptions…until she awoke and told him otherwise. Sighing almost in unison, the two males went to join their now sleeping mates. As InuYasha lay down he noted Shippo curled against Kagome's stomach and he smiled.

“Goodnight pup,” he whispered to the kit softly as he too cuddled up next to Kagome.

A short while later sleep finally claimed the hanyou, but not before he heard a soft slap followed by a rather playful sounding “Hentai!” `Bout time, was his last thought for the night.

Author's Note: It seems that my revision of my original chapters is finally complete. Now hopefully I can continue on. I had a couple comments that these last couple chapters where a little heavy on the twins…are they better now? I'm trying to remain focused on Kagome, but by the end Shadow will be just as important; I can't really say anything else without giving anything away. Lol. Quick question: do we want a Miroku/Sango lemon? How about a Sindel/Naraku, Naraku/Kikyo, .Sindel/Naraku/Kikyo lemon? Let me know!

Review Responses:

InuYashasLoveLorn: I'm glad you liked the background info…had to make it sad or else I wouldn't have a reason for Shadow to want to murder Sindel. *Gets smacked in face with tomato. Wipes goop from eyes* Gee, thanks. Sorry about the cliffy, but I had to do it. Every story should have at least one good cliffy…all good fun!

Lady Hikage (SilverShadowKitsune): Actually, that was a good question. Death Strike was originally marked, but after the mate dies the mark eventually fades. The mark fades during the `mourning period' and then after the appropriate amount of time has passed it will fade completely, leaving that person to seek a new mate. I'm sure a couple of other people probably were wondering about that too. Thanks for the review. Also, I try to answer all of the reviews I get…even if it's only a simple thank you. Did you get the response to the other review you left me? My response to it is at the end of chapter eight, if you missed it.

Jason C: Thanks for the review. A 7 on the grammar and spelling, huh? Going to have to work on that, but I did have a lot of errors in the last chapter. I think I've fixed most of them now though…

Coldfiresdomain & Taeniaea: Thanks for the review! Updated as requested. *bows* Hope you liked it.

Darklover19: Hmm I'm being threatened…eep! *hides* Sorry about the cliffy, but I just had to do it. I'm glad you liked the story and thanks for recommending it to your friends! No worries…I've got more chapters coming. I've also got another story in the works!
