Chapter 13: Heat
“Nani?” Kagome gasped as Sango stared at Shadow.
“Heat…your fertile time just before your period…don't tell me you don't know what I'm talking about,” Shadow stared in shock at her cousin.
“Yeah, but it's too late for me to be in heat…” Kagome stated.
“I start my monthly in a couple days…” said Sango at the very same time.
“So? Heat is different for humans, demons, and Demon Fae. Human women are in heat for the seven says before their monthly. Personally, I wouldn't want to be around those guys while in heat that long; would you?” Shadow perked an eyebrow at her cousin as both Kagome and Sango shook their heads adamantly. “Common demons only go into heat every couple of years and usually lasts 4 to 6 days or until they conceive. Demon Fae, on the other hand, have monthly cycles like humans. Also like humans, the Demon Fae go into heat just before our bleeding time, however instead of being fertile for seven days, we're only fertile the three or four days just before our period. The odd thing is that Sango is human, so her heat should have started before ours, but instead seems to be mimicking ours…” Shadow gave Sango an intrigued look as Death Strike emerged from the water.
“Perhaps her body simply adapted to the change in Kagome's. Just like our own bodies seem to have adapted to our cousin's cycle. Odd that it happened so fast, but either way, we have to put up with the males being possessive and territorial for the next few days,” Death Strike said as she wrung the water from her hair. “They won't allow other males near `their female' and more than likely they will want constant skin contact with you. They're also going to have the urge to screw you into unconsciousness, but I'm sure we can fend off our respective males.”
“And all four of us being fertile at once is bad?” Sango asked as she slowly washed herself, not really paying attention to her cleaning.
“Uh, yeah. The guys are going to be very snappish with each other. The children will be fine, but say Jaken comes near one of us…he's likely to get decapitated. They're not going to tolerate another male being within arms reach of their chosen female. It's going to be worse for Kagome and me because our mates are going to see Sesshomaru, Jaken, and Miroku as rivals since they are unmated,” Death Strike responded as she rubbed shampoo into her hair for the third time.
“I guess we just have to stick close to our mates then, Death Strike,” Kagome spoke up, “But what are Shadow and Sango going to do? And how did this happen in the first place?”
“The how part is simple, Kags. Your cycle and Sango's were already the same. Because you've been together for so long and are always in close proximity to one another, your bodies have synced themselves. It's not uncommon. Death Strike and I have similar cycles for the same reason: we're always together. My sister stated the most probable explanation moments ago. Sango's body has probably changed its cycle simply because yours has. As for why we have gone into heat too, it's possible that our cycles being synced already made it easier to match yours cousin,” Shadow explained. “Now, as for what Sango and I are going to do; although we aren't mated we do have our male counterparts within the group. Sango will need to stay near Miroku; as you may have noticed he's reacting to our heat cycles as well. Although he isn't a demon and can't smell it, his body is semi-tuned to Sango's and it knows she's in heat even if his mind doesn't realize it…”
“And Shadow will have to stay near the Fluffmiester. It's obvious that he's got feelings for my sister,” Death Strike finished with a laugh.
Shadow glared daggers at her sister as the four women hurriedly finished with their baths. Leaving the warmth of the water, they grabbed their towels and slowly dried off before scrambling into their sleepwear.
Each deep in their own thoughts, they made their way back to camp. They found Miroku, InuYasha, Sesshomaru, and Koga exchanging heated glares with each other after obviously having divided the camp into quarters. Koga noticed the women first and moved towards them, causing InuYasha and Miroku to growl at him. Sango stared at Miroku in shock.
“He doesn't sound human at all,” she whispered softly to Kagome.
“Basic instincts kicking in, nothing to worry about Sango,” Death Strike replied equally as soft.
“Everyone, lock eyes with your male and move towards them. Don't look at anyone else or they'll get jealous,” Shadow whispered as she met Sesshomaru's gaze and slowly made her way towards him.
Kagome nodded to Sango and they followed the older female's example. It took five minutes, but all four of them made it to their male's side without incident. Kagome noticed that Shippo and Rin were asleep near the fire with AhUn and Kirara curled up beside them. Jaken, amazingly, was still in one piece as he tended the fire. Turning back to InuYasha, she offered him a warm smile as she took his hand. A grunt was his response as he swept her into his arms and leapt high into the nearest tree. He chose a large, wide branch as his perch and settled Kagome comfortably in his lap as he adjusted his own position. With a sigh, he buried his nose in Kagome's hair and locked his arms around her. Its going to be a long three days, Kagome thought as she turned her attention to the others still on the ground.
She watched as Sango crawled into her bedding, Miroku right behind her, and within minutes the couple was asleep. Smiling softly, she turned her attention to Koga, as he pulled Death Strike into his lap, making InuYasha growl softly. Pulling back slightly, she met his golden gaze.
“You don't have to worry, I'm with you,” she reassured him softly, “And he's very happy with Death Strike.” She leaned in to kiss him, her eyes fluttering shut as his arms tightened around her.

Shadow was in a staring contest with Sesshomaru; had been since she'd returned to camp. She could tell by the look in his cool golden eyes that he expected her to back down…he was the male after all. Like hell I'm going to play the compliant female! She thought as her eyes narrowed and a growl rose in her throat. Narrowing his own eyes, Sesshomaru growled back.
Minutes that felt like hours passed and finally he stepped forward, reaching out to grasp her arm. Reacting without thought, she sidestepped and then leapt into his side, knocking the unprepared taiyoukai to the ground. She stood over him with fangs bared and claws raised; her eyes beginning to glow faintly.
His eyes bled red as he surged back to his feet and lunged at Shadow. She dares attack this Sesshomaru?! Foolish bitch, you'll submit before the sun rises! His thoughts raced through his mind as he caught her in his arms and both went crashing to the ground.
She gasped as the air rushed from her lungs as her back impacted with ground. Temporarily winded, she struggled to wiggle herself out from under the inu-youkai. His soft growl of pleasure forced her to give up on that thought as it dawned on her just what her motions where doing to him. With another growl she thrust her hips up, catching him off guard again and flipping them over. Before he could recover, she shifted into her fae form and dashed away.
Springing into a predatory crouch as she sprang away, he watched her pace back and forth not more than fifteen feet from him. Her silver eyes flashed in anger as her hackles stood on end. Fangs bared, tail hung low, she growled menacingly at him, but he could care less. The spicy scent of her heat overwhelmed his senses and he pounced. She twisted and leapt away, but not fast enough and he wrapped his arms around her hind quarters as they both tumbled to the ground again. Her yelp as he pinned her down only aroused him further as he whispered into her ear.
“I will have you,” he growled out as his claws brushed through her fur, “This Sesshomaru always gets what he wants…”
He trailed off as his eyes devoured her fae form; his claws running down her side and over to hip. As they brushed her core, she yelped again as she twisted and snapped at him. Her fangs caught him just below his armored shoulder and she let the venom in her upper teeth flow freely into the bite. With a growl he pulled away and she leapt free of his grasp. Just out of pouncing distance she spun around to face him, her growl echoing through the camp.

Kagome broke the kiss when her cousin's first growl fell upon her ears. She watched; eyes wide, as Shadow and Sesshomaru tussled; unsure if they were playing or really fighting. However, when Shadow yelped and sank her fangs into his arm, she knew Shadow was serious. Kagome moved to leap from the tree, but InuYasha held her tighter.
“We should help her!” Kagome practically hollered at her mate.
“No, let them fight it out,” InuYasha replied as he placed a finger against her lips to silence her angry retort. “Besides, the bastard needs to be put in his place…and I think she can do it.”
By now the rest of the group was watching Shadow and Sesshomaru; except for Rin and Shippo who slept like the dead. Sighing heavily, Kagome turned her attention back to the fight while simultaneously reaching out for her cousins' minds. She found a shimmering silver wall around Shadow's and turned her mental attention to Death Strike instead.
*Shouldn't we help her?* Kagome asked perplexed.
*Nope,* Death Strike replied cheerfully. *She's in heat, and he's taking advantage of it. No worries.* Kagome saw Death Strike shrug from the corner of her eyes. *Besides, if he wins, Shadow gets a mate…her soulmate I might add. A male that can stand up to her, and protect her if need be. However, if she wins…we got to watch one hell of a fight, right? I'm sure he'll try to beat her again later should he lose.*
Kagome shook her head and nearly missed the last comment that bearly brushed her mind. *But I don't think he's going to lose…*
“She's got to be kidding…Shadow's going to kill him!” Kagome mumbled to herself only to have InuYasha chuckle softly.
“I doubt that,” he stated as he caught her chin and turned her face to his. He caught her lips in a passionate kiss, intent on ignoring the battle only feet away as he picked up where they had left off.

Growling softly, Sesshomaru held his wounded arm as he again locked eyes with Shadow. The bitch had bitten him...and it stung like no wound he had ever received. He could smell the traces of her poison that remained on his singed flesh and hoari and he snarled at her. Ripping the sleeve, he gritted his teeth as he dripped his own poison into the wound; cauterizing it and…amazingly, negating the affects of her poison. Interesting, he thought as he stalked towards Shadow's bristling, growling form. She stood her ground until he was almost within arms' reach of her, and then she turned and bolted into the trees. With a hiss he attempted to summon her powers to take fae form and nearly screamed in rage when he found himself blocked.
Fine, he thought, I'll catch you as I am. He was no more than a blur of white as he streaked off into the trees after her.

InuYasha deepened their kiss as he turned Kagome so that she was straddling his hips. Pushing up against her, he ground his hips to hers, letting her feel just how hard he was. He was shocked when she gasped and pulled away.
“What's wrong?” he asked, slightly breathless from their kissing.
“We can't, InuYasha,” was her muttered reply as she refused to meet his eyes.
“Why? We can go somewhere else if you want,” he muttered as he pulled her to him and nuzzled her neck. She shivered as he ran his tongue over the mating mark and he grinned.
“No, it's just that…I'm not ready to have children…pups yet…” she tried to pull away, but he held her to his chest.
Unsure of what to say, he simply held her as she relaxed and then fell into a deep sleep against his chest. So she doesn't want to be pupped, he thought sadly, At least not yet. He growled softly as he rested his chin between her fuzzy ears. My Kagome, you have no idea how hard it's going to be for me to NOT take you…Turning his thoughts away from the topic of mating and pups, his ears twitched and he wrinkled his nose as he caught the scent and soft sounds of Koga and Death Strike's rutting. Rolling his eyes up, he stared at the stars until sleep claimed him.
***************************************************************** *******
The next morning, neither Sesshomaru nor Shadow had returned to the camp. Kagome started to worry as morning moved into afternoon.
“Where are they?” she wondered to herself, not realizing she'd said it aloud.
She still sat in the tree that she and InuYasha had slept in as he would not let her down. He had descended only long enough earlier to fetch them food, and only allowed her down when she needed to relieve herself. Even now she sat in his lap as he growled almost inaudibly at the other males present.
Kagome noted that neither Sango not Death Strike was better off. Both Miroku and Koga had fetched the food for their females that morning, just as InuYasha had done for her, and now held their partner's in their laps protectively.
“Don't worry, Kags!” Death Strike hollered up to her cousin, “They'll be back soon enough. Today is only day one of our heat cycle…they'll be back by the end of day three, I promise!”
However, Kagome wasn't reassured.
Afternoon slowly faded into evening, and evening into night; the time passing much the same as it had that morning except that as the day progressed the guys' overtures got slowly more aggressive.
InuYasha was almost continuously either sucking on or licking the mating mark on her neck now and it was driving her crazy. She envied Death Strike as her cousin pulled Koga away so that they could have some `private' time. She felt her cousin's barrier go up around her mind and Kagome turned her attention to where Sango was bludgeoning poor Miroku. With a sigh, she leaned further into InuYasha and drifted off to sleep.

~*~*~Dream Sequence~*~*~
Fire….flames everywhere…so very hot. She wipes the sweat from her brow and turns slowly. Where am I? She wonders. A breeze blows and kicks up cinders and ash. It pelts her clothes and burns her skin.
“So the second has been born…” a soft, feminine voice whispers.
“What?” she cries; confused.
“The prophecy was correct…” another voice hisses, reminding her of a snake.
“She is the tiger…” a third voice cries out.
“Kill them both! Before it is too late!” a fourth voice shrieks hysterically.
She twists and turns, the breeze blowing harder…blowing more ash around her, into her face.
“Who are you?” she cries, straining to see those that speak.
“Its true…both of the Chosen are female…” the third voice whispers again.
“Kill the tiger, and the dragon shall fail…” echoes a new, fifth voice.
Tears run down her cheeks. “What do you mean…the chosen? What tiger? What dragon?” she asks in exasperation.
“YOU! You are the tiger!” all five voices scream, “KILL HER!”
An orange haired, orange eyed woman materializes before her and she steps back in fear. A great snake curls around the woman's body as her black wings hang limply behind her. Her fanged grin promises pain, and she does the only thing she can think of: she runs. The orange haired woman's laughter rings eerily behind her as white light envelops her running form and the dreamscape disappears….

She nearly leapt from InuYasha's arms in her fear. His eyes flew open in surprise as the salty smell of her tears assaulted his nose and the rapids beats of her heart rang in his ears.
“Kagome?” he asked softly. When her eyes remained vacant and distant, he shook her gently and called to her little more forcefully.
Snapping back to herself, Kagome threw her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing hysterically. After discerning that she'd had a nightmare, he slowly coaxed her into talking about the dream. As she described to him what had happened in her dream, he found himself becoming concerned. From her description, it sounded as though she had descended to the pits of hell and that just wasn't possible…was it? After having gotten her calmed down, both fell back into fitful slumber.
Neither realized that below them, both silver and sapphire eyes watch intently as black ears stood perked, twitching as they'd listened to their cousin's recounting. Once those in tree had fallen back asleep, the twins' gazes met across the distance just before Shadow turned away and disappeared into the darkness.
***************************************************************** *******
The next day came and went much as the first had. Kagome tried once to suggest that they move on and that Shadow and Sesshomaru could catch up, but as soon as Koga had gotten within arms reach of her, all hell broke loose. As the sun set, Kagome was again in InuYasha's lap perched high in a tree. With a sigh, she watched the sun go down; the occasionally sound of metal on metal echoing through the trees. The sounds of fighting had started around mid-afternoon, yet her cousin assured her that Shadow was fine and so they group stayed as they were. Night fell and the group fell into slumber. Kagome was the last to fall asleep, worried that her dream the previous night would return, but it did not.
As morning dawned on the third day, the group was awoken by Shadow and Sesshomaru, in true form, as they snapped and snarled at each other. Kagome would have fallen out of the tree had it not been for InuYasha's quick reflexes.
Safely back in her mate's lap, Kagome watched as Sango and Miroku grabbed Rin and Shippo and got out of the way. Jaken, with AhUn and Kirara, followed suit as Death Strike grabbed Koga and leapt high into the closest tree. Kagome chuckled behind her hand as she listened to Koga complain about being in a tree. Noting that the three Noble Wolves also moved out of the way, Kagome turned her attention back to her cousin and Sesshomaru.
***************************************************************** *******
She was starting to get tired. After two days of running and fighting, she didn't think she could manage a third; well, she could, she just didn't want to. Loping through the trees in true demon form, she burst back into the clearing where her companions were camped; Sesshomaru hot on her tail. Persistent bastard, she growled to herself as she pivoted on her hind legs and brought her tail down on an unprepared Sesshomaru.
He dashed into the clearing, eyes red as his nosed twitched. He'd been running for hours, following her scent, and now he almost had her. Mine! His mind screamed as he suddenly plummeted to the ground. Regaining his feet, his lips curled back in a snarl, what the hell...his eyes widened, as he barely dodged the second swat, she hit me…with her TAIL?!? Interesting. Again she lashed out with her tail and again he dodged. With a growl he pounced, landing across her back and burying his muzzle in the scruff of her neck. His fangs found skin through the thick fur and he bit down as he slid from her back. Pulling her off balance, he shook his head hard, effectively knocking her off her feet.
“I win, submit!” he growled in inu, his fangs still clutching her neck.
“You think,” she growled back as she snapped at his foreleg. He stepped back and shook her hard in return. With a mental sigh, Shadow whined and laid her ears back as she let her body go slack. “Fine, you win.”
***************************************************************** *******
Kagome was unsure just what happened after Sesshomaru shook her cousin, but from the widening of InuYasha's eyes and the startled gasp Death Strike tried to hide, she was sure it wasn't what they'd expected. She watched as Sesshomaru released Shadow, and with a soft whimper, Shadow rolled onto her back…presenting her unguarded throat and belly to him. At the base of the tree, the Noble Wolves lifted their muzzles and howled; Shadow had lost.

Author's Note: Well, here was the next installment in `The Chosen.' I hope no one is disappointed. Let me know your thoughts….Review, review, review! Thanks!
Reviewer Responses:
Inu-Shinta: You're grossed out by the fact that I had a lemon with Sindel, Naraku, and Kikyo…yet you want me to do a blood orgy with Kags, Inu, and her three friends? O…k. Lol, yes that is just messed up! I don't know if I'll do much with Kagome's present time…I do plan on having them go back a couple of times….I mean someone has got to beat some sense into Hojo's head. As for Eri, Yuka, and Ayumi…I don't think I'll do much with them. Personally, I find them too nosy and too pushy. Much like Kikyo, they give me mixed feelings and it makes me grit my teeth in frustration. I'll think about your suggestion; however I can guarantee that those three will NOT be hanyou, lol. As for Kagura, Kanna, and Kohaku…I'm working on something with them. Kagura will probably show up in the next few chapters somewhere. And no, I haven't forgotten about Inu's rosary…
