Christmas Shoes
By Hanyou_swimmer

A/N: This is very loosely based on the song, The Christmas Shoes. I got the inspiration while procrastinating studying for finals and decided to post it. Let me know what you all think!

Sesshomaru waited patiently in line at J.C. Penney’s department store. He had just found the perfect gift for his mother, which was good considering it was Christmas Eve. He had found a set of freshwater pearls that he knew she would love. This finished his Christmas shopping.
He had noticed her in front of him when he walked up to get in line and something had drawn him to her. She couldn’t have been more than six or seven. She had on ratty clothes, her face was dirty and tearstained, her hair looked unwashed, and she looked like she hadn’t eaten in a while. But more than that, she had the scent of death on her. As he approached her he could tell that it wasn’t her own, but that of a close relative. She was clinging to a pair of shoes. The shoes weren’t all that special, they were black leather with no heel and obviously too big for her.

As the line got shorter Sesshomaru began to notice that other than the scent of the person that was dying, there were no other strong scents on her. The only reason that could be that the person was the only one she had had constant contact with.

The little girl walked up to the counter and set the shoes down. Sesshomaru looked up when he heard the shoes being set down. The cashier looked down in annoyance. She sighed and scanned the shoes and announced that the total was thirty seven dollars and fourteen cents. The little girl sat some money on the counter and said, “I don’t know how to count money yet, it this enough.” All she had sat down was fourteen dollars three cents and some lent.

The woman, rather distastefully said that is wasn’t.

Sesshomaru nearly growled as he heard the woman’s self-righteous tone. He almost questioned why he was so upset by the thought of this little girl being mistreated, but decided that it was just because mating Kagura had made him more compassionate.

The little girl started to walk away, nearly crying, griping the money in her little hands tightly, while the woman snorted and turned her head to Sesshomaru. “How may I help you today sir?” She asked kindly.

“I would like to purchase these pearls and these shoes,” as he pointed to the shoes that the little girl had wanted to buy.

The woman merely snorted, picking the shoes up and scanning them. After she had scanned the pearls, she announced the price and he handed her his credit card. After signing the credit slip, he went to find the little girl.

As he stepped out of the store, he began to sniff for the little girl. It didn’t take him too much time to find not only her, but the source of the scent of death. The little girl and her mother were sitting on the back of the building. They had two small trash bags that looked like they had all of their earthly belongings in them. The older woman looked worn out, tired, and sick. The little girl snuggled up to the woman, putting an arm around her.

Sesshomaru looked at the scene, unsure of the feeling he was having.

He slowly walked up to the little girl and spoke softly but firmly, “little girl, come here.”

The little girl looked startled, but went to him nonetheless. He looked down at her and said, “What’s your name?”

“Rin” the little girl replied.

“I saw you in the store with those shoes, what were you going to do with them?”

“Well,” she said softly, “my daddy left a long time ago and I’m all my mommy has. She’s been real sick and so I have to take care of her. The doctor said that it’s getting worse and that she may not be here for long, well at least that’s what mommy said when we left the doctor. She’s never had anything really nice before and I just wanted her to have them before, well you know…” she sighed heavily, trying not to cry. “I saved as much money as I could but I guess it wasn’t enough.” She continued.

Sesshomaru looked down at her, amazed by her maturity and intelligence. He reached in his bag and pulled out a shoe box and handed it to her. “Well, in honor of your mother, this Sesshomaru has decided to help you.” He handed her a box, expecting a quick thank you, but instant had the young, newly energized child jumping up to hug him. He grabbed her so she wouldn’t hurt herself while she jumped, and she tightened the hug. She kept saying “thank you” over and over again.

Sesshomaru sat Rin down and said “this Sesshomaru does not hug” in a cold, but not harsh way. Rin simply jumped up and down, holding the shoes for a few moments. She then turned to her mother, who was nearly asleep. Rin reached over to wake her up and give her the shoes.

Sesshomaru watched quietly. He had no idea why he bought the shoes, spoken to the little girl, allowed her to hug him, or was still standing here watching the mother and child interact. Just as he was about to turn around, he noticed that Rin’s mother wasn’t responding to her very well.

Rin excitedly said, “mommy look at your new shoes.”

Her mother softly replied, “they are beautiful dear, thank you so much.” That was when Sesshomaru noticed the scent of death getting stronger. Rin’s mother had just died.

Rin tried to wake her mother up again to have her put them on, but her mother wouldn’t wake up. Slowly she noticed the lack of breathing and began to cry.

Sesshomaru turned around and walked over to the girl. He looked her in the eye and asked, “where are you going to go? Do you have any family?”

Rin shook her head no and continued to cry. Sesshomaru asked, “would you like to stay with me?” When she nodded her head he picked her up, followed by her things and walked to his car.

Once in his car he placed Rin and her things in the back seat and got into the front and pulled out his cell phone to call someone to come for Rin’s mother so she could receive a proper burial. He then called his mate to tell her about the little girl, followed by his lawyer to make things legal.

He drove Rin to his home. By the time the forty minute drive was over, the girl was asleep. He pulled into his driveway and parked his car. He got out and opened the back door to pick her up. He looked up to see his mate running towards him.

Kagura looked up at him and asked him to hand her the little girl. He did. She smoothed the girls hair and frowned. “She’s malnourished, and she really needs a bath and some new clothes.”

Sesshomaru gave a weak smile and said, “yes, I know. I thought we could wait until tomorrow to bathe her and feed her, she’s had a long day.”

Kagura looked up at him and smiled. This little girl needed them, and they were going to be there for her.
