The Closed Door Just Might Open

Chapter 12: a close call

A week is left of winter break. It doesn't last long enough. I spent most of the time sleeping or getting Kagome back. We alternate days. Today was my day to sleep as she came over early to wake me up. And so, I was rudely awakened by the pounding at the front door. It's been starting and stopping for the last ten minutes. I finally opened my eyes, but I stayed in bed.

“Somebody get that damn door!” I shouted. I was answered by more pounding. I couldn't take it anymore. I threw the covers off and headed out of my room to get the door. I stopped by the couch where I found Sesshomaru awake, reading. I scoff in disbelief.

“You were awake and that close to the door and you couldn't open it?” I asked in bewilderment.

He shrugged with the book in hand. “I happened to reach a very climactic point in my book that couldn't be left undone.”

I shake my head in disappointment. “You're so full of myself,” I murmur as I head to the door. I open the door, looking through groggy eyes. I find the surprised face of Kagome.

“Oh I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you, but would Inuyasha happen to be here,” she apologizes for waking me. I open my mouth about to ask what she was playing at when I froze. I forgot I look like my half-demon self. Oh shit.

“Uh…he's not here right now. He went out,” I tried to say calmly.

“At eight in the morning?” she questioned with a confused look on her face.

“Uh…I don't know. He's weird like that getting up early sometimes. I think he went to the gym.” I could hear Sesshomaru bark a laugh before composing himself and getting back into his book. I glared at him for a second before I focused my attention back at Kagome.

“Sorry, do I know you? I don't think we've met. I'm Kagome,” she said holding out her hand for me to shake. I took it and shook for a brief moment.

“No you don't know me. I'm…” Quick. Think of a cousin I like. “Bankotsu. I'm Inuyasha's cousin.”

She looks skeptical. “You look nothing like him.” Right. Should have thought of that.

“And that is because I am a half-demon and he's a cousin on my human side. People say if we were both human or both half-demons, we'd be twins.” Realization dawned on her. Good, I thought of an excuse that sounded legitimate.

“Oh yeah. I kind of see that in your face.” I let out a small sigh of relief.

“Do you know when Inuyasha might get back? I was hoping to take him somewhere today.” Oh god, where was she gonna take me?

“I don't know when he'll get back. I'm not sure where he is. He could be gone all day.”

“Oh, I guess that's fine. Is it ok if come in?”

“Sure,” I said and stepped to the side to let her in.

“Hey Kagome,” I heard Sesshomaru. I close my eyes. He just had to say her name. I'm screwed.

“Who's that? And why does he know my name?” Kagome asked, a little freaked.

He looked like he was wondering why she didn't recognize him. “I'm S—”

“That's my brother…Jakotsu,” I interrupted.

“Jakotsu?!” he yelled incredulously looking toward me, making Kagome jump. Sesshomaru and I both know how Jakotsu is so you can see his reaction.

“Jakotsu,” he stated calmly looking back in his book.

“Oh Jakotsu. Inuyasha's talked about you. No offense, but he said you were gay,” Kagome answered.

“Well now that my secrets out, I don't need to hide anything. You don't mind gay people, do you?” Sesshomaru replied with that high voice some gay men have.

“Oh! No, of course not! I still don't know how you know my name, though.” Sesshomaru and I exchanged a look. I shrugged and mouthed `make up something' from behind Kagome.

“Well, you're all Inuyasha ever talks about,” he explained. As he stressed `Inuyasha', he looked me in the eye with a mischievous gleam in his. He's gonna embarrass me and I can't even express it. He's just loving this, I bet.

“He does?” she asks surprised.

“I do not!” I protested. She turned back to me. “…think he does,” I finished quietly. She looked back forward.

“I'm sorry. He doesn't talk about you guys much. In fact, I don't think he's ever talked about you, Bankotsu,” she said, facing back towards me. I got to remember to talk more Bankotsu.

“I'm insulted. I'm a better cousin than him,” I said, gesturing to `Jakotsu'. He glared and Kagome turned back around to face him.

“Pssh. Whatever, I have more manners. Speaking of manners; Kagome, what is your eye color?” he asked seeming interested.

“Uh, brown,” she replied bluntly.

“Shut up,” he said sounding like those girly cheerleaders. “Shut up. That is impossible. Someone as beautiful as you should not have an eye color as common as brown.

“Excuse me. But what does her eye color have to do with manners?” I interrupted.

“Well, you don't know because you obviously don't have any,” Kagome answered for me. It left my mouth gaping and Sesshomaru's smiling.

“May I finish?” Sesshomaru questioned. I crossed my arms behind Kagome's back and mouthed `no!' with a scowl on my face.

“So then what is my eye color?” Kagome asked Sesshomaru, picking up as if I never interrupted.

“Well, it can't be just brown. There're so many types of brown. There's light, dark, almost black, chocolate. But there are many varieties of chocolate. There's dark chocolate, milk chocolate, peanut-butter chocolate,” he went over to her and took her chin to get a closer look in her eyes. I rolled my eyes. Who knew you could have so many definitions for brown? Coming from him, though, is tiring.

“I think you have a milk chocolate brown. Yep, that's the verdict.”

“Thank you,” she said sounding amused. “Well, I was planning on taking Inuyasha to Barnes & Noble, but since he's gone missing would one of you mind going with me today?” Sesshomaru and I both looked shocked. That's where she was planning on taking me? A bookstore? I can live with that. Sesshomaru opened his mouth to answer, loving the idea of any place with books.

“Ah, I'll go if you want. Besides, Jakotsu you had things to do today anyway. Right?” He gave me a flat look.

“Yes. And one of us has to stay for when Sesshomaru and Inuyasha get back.”

“Can you wait out on the porch? I'll be right there,” I said to Kagome. She nodded and headed out.

“What was up with that? `Many types of brown'? Brown is brown. That's that.”

“I was just trying to seem interesting,” he said casually.

I got a doubtful look on my face. “You know, you did that a little too well. You sure you don't have any questions, Sesshomaru? About sexuality. What are you gonna tell Rin? This will be devastating for her, to know her boyfriend is leaving her for guys.” By now I'd gone to far and was a second away from being choked to death.

“Ok ok. geez. Just kidding, don't be so uptight about it,” I said calmly heading for the door.

“Later homo,” I snapped quickly before shutting the door to be avoided by Sesshomaru's book of the week. More like, book of the day.

“Ok, ready to go,” I said, making my way down the porch steps to where Kagome was at.

“So what are you guys doing, staying with Inuyasha?” Kagome inquired.

“Uh…we decided on visiting him. We needed somewhere to stay for our break. We're leaving tomorrow morning,” I quickly thought up as we started walking. I hope that sounded like a good excuse.

“Oh. Where do you live?” Yes, she bought it. Oh wait, she asked me something else.

“We're visiting from Osaka,” I said, hoping my voice is as convincing as it sounds to me. Bankotsu does live in Osaka, doesn't he? She seemed surprised.

“Oh, I thought you would be from Kyoto,” she commented.

“Why's that?” I ask, confused.

“Most everyone I know has relatives in Kyoto. That's just what I thought.”

“So what are we getting at the bookstore?” I asked, sounding optimistic.

“Maybe a couple of CD's. I was hoping to get some Kingdom Hearts books.” Whoa, that sounds so familiar.

“Isn't that a video game?” She got a weird look on her face.

“That's weird.”

“What is?” I hope I didn't give something away about myself.

“You sound like someone I know.”

“Anyone I know?” I asked, hopeful.

“Now that you mention it, you remind me of two people. You seem a lot like Inuyasha and another person you wouldn't know.” At least she doesn't think I am Inuyasha.

“Hmm. Well, people say Inuyasha and I are a lot alike.” She nodded.

“Yeah, I can see that. Come on, let's go get those books,” she said lightly and walked ahead.

“So, did you have a good time with Kagome?” Sesshomaru asked from the living room when he heard me go through the front door. I rolled my eyes at his tone of voice.

“Yes, as a matter of fact I did. Now I'm just gonna get a soda and lock myself up in my room,” I answered the last part sardonically, complete with a thumbs-up at the end.

“Hmm,” he said with a thoughtful look on his face as he nodded. He put his book down—oh my god!—and got up from the couch to follow me around.

“So, if you had a good time with her being yourself, don't you think you want her to know about yourself?” he asked with a hopeful look in his eye as he leaned against the isle in the kitchen. I shrug my shoulders as I look through the fridge.

“You know this isn't gonna work, right?” he asked tiredly with a flat look.

“What's not gonna work,” I ask, trying to seem oblivious, pulling out a Mountain Dew. I walked out of the kitchen to the hall toward my room, with Sesshomaru following me the whole time.

“The charade you're putting on about being human. You realize it's gonna blow up in your face?” he asked still following me. I opened up my can, hearing the loud pop and hiss. I took a sip, prolonging my answer. I turned back to face him.

“You don't know that. I've been doing this all my life. She's not gonna find out. Nobody is,” I stated calmly.

“She's gonna find out because she's one of the only people smart enough to figure it out, besides Sango, but you don't even hang out with Sango. You hang with her boyfriend, who happened to find out. Remember that?”

“One guy! One! That was it,” I debated. I'd forgotten about Miroku to tell you the truth. I haven't hung out with him in a while.

“And that guy was an idiot! And idiotic pervert! If the idiotic pervert found out, how long do you think it's gonna take for a smart girl like Kagome to find out?” he said, now yelling, trying to get it through my head.

“I don't need this,” I scoffed and turned around to get in my room. I tried throwing my door shut but he caught it.

“Yes, you do need this. I know you're not gonna listen to me, but you should. I'm telling you this for your own good. It may not seem like it, but I am. I'm trying to prevent you from hurting her or yourself,” he explained.

“I don't need to hear this from you. I know what I'm doing. So just leave me alone and go back to your books,” I say with a slam of the door. I hear him give a frustrated groan before leaving. He doesn't get it. I can do this. Why can't he see that? I wish he would just stay out of it.

(PoV change)

I had a really good time with Bankotsu. He reminded me a lot of Inuyasha. He also reminded me of unwantedhanyou. If he were that would make some sense. I never thought of this, but what if Inuyasha or Bankotsu is unwantedhanyou? That would be great if it were Bankotsu. That would be awful if it were Inuyasha.

Just normal stuff happened when I got home. My mom asked how my day was. Souta was playing videogames in the living room. I read all of the Kingdom Hearts books I got today before dinner. I went upstairs and checked any e-mail, new pictures from fave artists, and if unwanted was online. Not tonight. And I drew a couple pictures before I went to sleep.

Kagome was sitting in her spot at the park, sketching like always. She was in her own world, with her headphones in her ears, when two different hands slipped over her eyes. She smiled, knowing who the people were.

They took their hands away and went to stand in front of her. She saw Inuyasha leaning against the pillar and Bankotsu sitting on top of the wall on her right. They both looked at her with the exact same smiles on their faces. Bankotsu was right. They are a lot alike.

“What's up, you two?” she asked, expecting an answer. What she got was them exchanging a look. Inuyasha and Bankotsu took each other's hands. There was a bright light, which made Kagome have to shield her eyes. When she removed her hand she only found Inuyasha. She got a confused look on her face.

“What happened to Bankotsu?” she asked, puzzled. He got a smile on his face that seemed to say `that's for me to know and you to never find out'.

“He's with me,” he replied. She stood up and looked around behind him.

“Where?” His smile widened.

“I'll tell you later.” It didn't help Kagome understand it any better. He went to sit on the part of the wall Bankotsu was sitting on before. Kagome decided to sit on the wall adjacent to it with her sketchbook in her lap and her iPod laying on the wall.

“So whatcha drawing this time?” She got a sheepish smile on her face, along with a sheepish laugh.

“I haven't really drawn anything yet. Nothing comes to mind.”

“Well, don't look at me. I don't have any ideas,” he said holding his hands up like the cops asked him to.

“Of course you don't.” She tapped her pencil against her mouth, hoping to come up with something to draw. She didn't notice Inuyasha watching her and scooting closer.

“You said you wanted to draw Kingdom Hearts pictures right?” he questioned, trying to help her come up with something. He moved a little closer.

“Yeah, so?”

“So what about Sora?” She looked like she was considering his suggestion.

“Well, what would he be doing?” He scooted closer.

“Maybe protecting Kairi? Or Namine?” She nodded her head thoughtfully.

“I think I could do that,” she smiled. She forgot about her sketchbook when she looked into Inuyasha's eyes. Now she could understand why all the girls in school swooned over his eyes. They were so beautiful; you couldn't not look into them.

She could see those eyes coming closer to her face. She could feel his breath merging with hers. Her eyes slowly closed when their lips locked. It was a while before she registered what she was doing. Why wasn't she pushing him away? She realized she didn't want to. She loved the way his lips were moving against hers. She figured out she'd been wanting this for a while. And she didn't want it to stop.

My eyes snapped wide open. My heart was pounding a mile a minute. My breaths came out shuddering. I sat up slowly and leaned back against the wall. I usually don't remember my dreams, besides ones of my dad, but the one time I do it's so weird. It made no sense.

What happened to Bankotsu in there? What did Inuyasha mean `he's with me'? How did he know about my drawings? Why did he know about them? When did he know I wanted to draw Kingdom Hearts pictures? And how did he know about the characters in it? And why did I kiss him? No, the better question is: why was I enjoying it?!

I sighed and held my face in my hands. I looked up at the time. 3:42 AM. I groaned. I shouldn't even be awake. And those are too many questions for my sleep-consumed mind to handle right now.

But why did I enjoy that kiss? Do I like him again? NO! No way! Not again. I'm not letting that happen again. I don't want to go back on that roller coaster again.

Why am I even asking myself these ridiculous questions? It was just a dream. It's not like there's a hidden meaning behind every single dream. I'm just overreacting. I'm not thinking straight. I'll just get some more sleep. Yes, sleep seems good.
