The Cookie
“Hey Inuyasha!” I called out to him as he lounged about up in his favorite tree. The others had gone up to visit the slayer village for repairs to their weapons, leaving me and the hanyou alone for three days. Even though I thought it would be the perfect time to surprise him with his favorite ramen from home, he seemed lost.
It had been a heartbreaking past couple weeks with Kikyou losing her life once more and Kouga-kun losing his shards. Even with the exception that Kohaku had been revived back to his old self, Inuyasha seldom spoke. Instead, he kept to himself, staring out into the sky as if waiting for something to come along.
It had taken me awhile to get over the fact that he was hurting and would probably be like this. Even though I craved his company, I knew he ached.
“Inuyashaaaa,” I called again, this time with a teasing sound at that the end that actually caused his head to turn in my direction. Thank goodness. “I've a got a treat for you, will you come down please?”
The man didn't even put up a fight, and gave an uncharacteristic nod before joining me down on the ground. His eyes examined everything laid out. A long warm blanket had been placed on the ground with a box sitting in the center. “What is it?” He asked, his voice just a little odd from not being used for the past few days.
I smiled and opened it. “A box of homemade cookies would you like one?”
He gave it a good sniff, curious at least at what I had to offer. Maybe there was a bit of hope left. Encouraged by his actions, I pulled a soft golden brown one out and handed it to him. Again he sniffed it after taking it from my hands and gave a perplexed look. “How do they taste?”
“Try one for yourself,” I tried to sound nonchalant about it.
His gaze shifted from the cookie back to me and then toward the bakery good once more. “Is it better then ramen?”
My eyebrows rouse up at that. “I suppose in my opinion yeah.”
He actually scoffed and mumbled “Doubtable” then took one last glance at me before he bit into it.
I didn't realize I was holding my breath until it became too hard and I had to take a breath. “Well?”
He chewed some more, then glanced back at the box before swallowing. “Not bad. Not my favorite though.”
I gave a short laugh, not at all surprised his comment. “Nothing beats ramen does it?”
He glanced at me then, his face perplexed. “Who said ramen was my favorite taste?”
Now that…was unexpected. “Then what is?”
Before I could blink, he leaned in, closing the short distance between us as our lips met and I tasted the chocolate from his mouth mingling into mine before he pulled back with a satisfied smirk. “Yeah, that doesn't even come close to this.” And with a quick move of a hand, he had me pulled close to him and again went for my lips that were now twisted in a satisfied smile of their own.
