Ch. 1
It Happened One Night….
His eyes opened slowly.
"Shit."
His face felt as if it was on fire and his head was just about ready to explode. He tried to sit up, but the cramped space prevented him from doing so. His arms and legs felt numb and it was then that he realized that his limbs were bound with rope.
He tried to remember what happened, how he'd gotten into this situation, but he was in too much pain and it hurt to think. He was suddenly thrust upward and his head came into contact with something hard.
His vision blurred as he was engulfed in a tidal wave of pain. Before he lost consciousness, one thought flitted through his mind.
`Why the hell am I tied up in the back of a trunk?'
~~~~~~
"See ya tomorrow, Kagome."
Kagome waved goodbye and switched off her computer. She stretched her arms and sighed, her body aching for a good night's sleep. She had to stop doing the 12 hour workday gig; it was murder on her body.
She gathered up her belongings and headed for the elevators. When the elevator doors slid open with a ding, she stepped inside and pressed the button marked "garage". As she rode down to her destination, her thoughts turned to her next assignment.
"The Iakouy family." She mumbled to herself. The most notorious crime family New York had ever seen. From the information Kagome had gathered so far, the head of the family, Naraku Iakouy, made media darling John Gotti look like a powder puff. Not to mention the numerous court trials, news headlines, made for TV movies…
The elevator doors slid open soundlessly and Kagome stepped out and made her way to her car.
This story was going to be her big break and Kagome knew that the next few weeks of her life were going to be life changing.
~~~~~~
"Hey! Wake up, you piece of shit!"
He struggled to open his eyes, but they wouldn't cooperate. They felt as if they were glued shut.
"C…can't." He mumbled. All he wanted to do was sleep, preferably for the rest of his life. Anything to make this unbearable pain go away.
"Well, I guess I'll just have to make you, then." The voice sneered. He felt himself being picked up and then just as suddenly he was dropped down onto the ground. He felt the hard patter of rain and welcomed the feeling. The coolness managed to lessen some of the pain. He still couldn't quite remember what was going on, but he knew it couldn't be good.
"What do you want us to do with him, boss?" The voice asked. He heard the sound of footsteps approach where he lay and stop in front of him.
"Is he conscious?" A second voice asked. It was cold and detached, showing no emotion. There was a pause and then the second voice said, "Good."
Suddenly, he felt something connect with his ribs. He let out a whoosh of air as it was knocked out of him by the blow.
"I know you can hear me so listen well. You have disgraced this family for the last time and now you will pay. The penalty for family disloyalty is death and that's exactly what you're going to get."
With the way he was feeling right now, death didn't seem like such a bad idea. He had the sudden insane urge to laugh, but his body seemed to have shut down, a minor malfunction.
"You want me to put a bullet through his brain, boss?" The first voice asked gleefully. "No," The second voice said. "That would be too good for this fucking rat. Instead, we're going to leave him here and let him die off. Since he's already knocking on death's door, he'll be dead by sunrise." The two voices laughed.
"Come and let's get out of the rain before I ruin another perfectly good suit."
He heard retreating footsteps and then the revving of an engine. He once again lost consciousness as the car disappeared into the darkness and the rain continued to beat down mercilessly.
~~~~~~
Kagome cursed as she stopped in front of the bright orange sign that read DETOUR. With the rain pouring down the way it was, she was in no mood to take an unknown alternate route home. With a resigned sigh, she steered the Mercedes Benz to the right and continued down the road. She was unfamiliar with the road and wasn't too keen on the fact that there were no street lights.
"Thank god for technology." She muttered as she flipped on the bright lights. The road was instantly illuminated and Kagome settled back in her seat, enjoying the classical music that was filtering softly through the car's speakers.
She absently wondered if Buyo was climbing the walls yet. Every time she worked late like this, the cat would scratch up anything he could get his claws on. She glanced at the clock on the dashboard and grimaced when she saw the illuminated 1:30. She was definitely going to be cleaning up pillow stuffing when she got home.
"Oh my god!"
Kagome slammed on her breaks, praying that she wouldn't hit the suspiciously human looking form lying in the middle of the road. The car skidded to a ear splitting screech just inches from what Kagome now strongly suspected was a body.
Once the car came to a complete stop, she leaned back in the seat, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and her breaths were coming in short gasps.
What was a body doing in the middle of the road on a ridiculously rainy night? Kagome had no answers and she wasn't sure if she really wanted any. Whatever the answer, it couldn't be good.
"What do I do now?" She asked out loud. Her question was met with the pattering rain and the soft melody of the music. "Police." She blurted out, immediately reaching in her purse for her cell phone. She flipped it open and stared at it dumbly. The one time when she really needed it and there was no service.
"Great." She muttered, throwing the phone in the passenger seat. She closed her eyes briefly and made up her mind.
Kagome quickly exited the car and made her way cautiously to the body. She gasped when she saw his face. The man's face was covered in bruises and various cuts and scratches. His eyes, she noticed with a sickening feeling, were completely caked with dried blood. She kneeled next to him and, after a moment's hesitation, placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Sir?" She called out. "Sir, can you hear me?" The man only moaned and fell silent. Kagome's hand accidentally brushed against his hair and she noticed that the long strands were covered in dirt and blood, making it impossible to tell the color, although she could've sworn that it was white. `Interesting.' She thought.
Kagome again called out to the man, but got no response. Her only course of action was to drag the man to the car and somehow lift him in. Kagome was not looking forward to the task, but she couldn't very well leave him lying in the road.
She took a deep breath and hooked her arms under his armpits and slowly made her way to the back passenger door. As she tried her best to gently lift him into the back seat, she thought about how glad she was when she'd decided to take up boxing as a hobby. It was paying off as she situated him in the back seat as comfortably as she could without much hassle.
As Kagome trotted to the driver's side and slid in, she briefly wondered if she was making a huge mistake. A moan sounded from the back seat and then there was silence. She probably was but all she was worried about was getting the man home so she could properly assess the damage and call an ambulance.
Besides, she was curious as to how this bruised and bloodied man ended up on a deserted road in the wee hours of a terribly wet morning.
