He sat down on the bench beside her as she began to speak. Her words caused his chest to tighten up, and the tears that soon followed made him turn his head to look directly at her. Rishou had rarely ever seen his mother cry, but every time he did, it was as if the bright, sunny day that surrounded them suddenly fell into grey skies and solemn rain.
He hated it.
“I have to block out thoughts of you so I don't lose my head.
They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed.
Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I'm alone.
Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home.
“I'm sorry,” she murmured as he watched her, and she suddenly brought her head up to look him right in the eye. Her hazel eyes caught the sunlight brilliantly, making them sparkle with a ferocity he had never seen before. Her depressing words did not dull her, Rishou was shocked to realize; they made her stronger, younger.
He had to look away to continue listening.
“There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain.
An ounce of peace is all I want for you. Will you never call again?
And will you never say that you love me just to put it in my face?
And will you never try to reach me?
It is I that wanted space.”
The grown shapeshifter groaned inwardly as he listened. She was so melancholy today… And he knew why.
She always got this way on his birthday, of all days. It was somehow different on Iyo and Noru's birthday, and on Amai's and on Bo's. Why?
“You are my first-born, Rish,” she whispered, the tears freely flowing now. “I feel so… responsible.”
“For what?” he asked, now that it was his turn to speak.
“For this life!”
He reached out and took her into his arms.
“Hate me today.
Hate me tomorrow.
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you.”
He sighed, closing his eyes. “Mother, I cannot hate you.”
“Hate me in ways
Yeah, ways hard to swallow.
Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you.”
“Mother!”
Rishou released her, shooting to his feet suddenly, unable to stand it anymore. “I hate this!” he screamed at her, losing his cool for practically the first time in his entire life. “I hate the way you speak about yourself! You are not alone, Mother! You have me! You have always had me, and Iyo and Noru and Amai and Bo!”
He dropped to his knees before her, clasping her small hands tightly in his own as he calmed himself, whimpering lowly, “And, believe me or not, you have Father.”
She snorted. “Sure.”
He looked up at her, meeting her eyes again; they were a storm of greens and browns, and he rested his chin innocently on her lap, still looking up at her. “You do, Mother. The great Naraku is yours - yours completely! He has always been yours! And you have always been his; you deny this to yourself, Mother!” Rishou groaned when she shook her head.
He grasped her shoulders and shook her roughly, his temper betraying him again. “You have a home, Mother. And a family, and sons and daughters who love you and would do anything for you.” He sighed. “And you have a mate who, over the years, has grown to love you as man should love his life mate.”
She stared at her eldest as he spoke on. “He dreams of you, Mother, of only you. He would bed other women just to watch your face twist in anger, your eyes flare with jealousy! He loved getting that reaction from you; it pleased him to no end!” He was fastly becoming exasperated with her.
“You make me…”
Rishou took a deep breath, rising until his face was level with hers. Identical hazel eyes met and held as he murmured, “You and Father make me believe in love.”
