Chapter 04: Purified
She felt it, like a beacon of light coming out from a haze. This place, there was a battle going on; more than one. She felt Kagome, her struggle to win over Naraku and the salvation of the boy’s life by her hands. She could sense the last shard, in her hands, covered in the blood of its purifier. She looked out, surveying the battle from the tree in which her soul collectors placed her. The battle was at a stand still, nether side giving to the other, hanyo against hanyo, while the monk and demon slayers tended to the exhausted miko. She stood up to aim her bow at the evil apparition, ready to finally put an end to this, when Naraku changed his course. Instead of charging at Inuyasha, he swooped around him and headed for the miko, and for the last jewel shard.
The monk and demon slayers stood up at Inuyasha’s warning, shielding Kagome from him. The fire neko transformed and charged at Naraku, biting at his tentacles. As soon as she bit, miasma spewed out of the wound, poisoning the neko. She heard the girl demon slayer yell for her fallen friend as she and the others rushed Naraku.
Kikyo watched as Naraku picked them off one-by-one, throwing them every which way. She even saw the young kitusne jump up and bite Naraku’s arm, before he was swatted away. After ridding himself of the kitusne, he rounded on Kagome and the jewel shard once again.
//He must not have it,// Kikyo pledged to herself. She aimed for the demons head, but then recoiled when she saw him deflected by the force of the jewel shard itself. Kikyo stood in awe. Kagome had made the jewel so pure, that Naraku’s evil hands couldn’t touch it. The look of shock on Naraku’s face made Kikyo grin in pride. The young miko was learning fast.
Despite what Inuyasha and the others thought, she did not hate Kagome, or envy her. How can you hate or envy yourself? Kikyo had come to terms with her a while ago, when they were both trapped inside a miko fuiji. She showed a strength and determination that Kikyo had never possessed. Ever since then, she watched as the young miko grew. It wasn’t long until she was as powerful as Kikyo herself, but the miko and her companions failed to notice. And luckily, so did Naraku. If he had, he wouldn’t have wasted his time trying to kill Kikyo. But thanks to that, Kagome was able to save her life after Naraku failed to kill her in one blow. It was then that she really felt the connection they had, the secret that they shared; Kagome was allowing her to keep a part of her real soul. She could have called back the whole of her soul the day Kikyo was brought back by Urasue, but she didn’t; Kikyo still had a piece of her true soul inside this fake body. After Kagome had healed her, Kikyo understood. They were one in the same. The same soul, the same essence, just separated by time. They were never supposed to meet, never suppose to walk the earth at the same time.
But the meddling of a witch broke that harmony, and pitted them against each other for the love of a hanyo. It hurt, seeing Inuyasha falling for another at first, until she recognized that…he wasn’t. This realization was strong enough to bring the fake woman to tears. Inuyasha loved her…them…no matter what body they were in. For the first time since she was brought back, she could look at Inuyasha and smile.
It was after this that Kikyo decided she would help kill Naraku, then return where she belonged, to her future self. She was curious how powerful Kagome would be when she was whole. But now, even though she was still crippled by the loss of some of her soul, she still managed to surpass even Kikyo’s abilities. Kikyo stared down at the wounded miko. Even in that state, she was able to keep the jewel shard out of Naraku’s hands.
Calling to her soul collectors, they lifted her out of the tree and sat her down on the earth. She made her way to the fight, knowing that now was the time to try and end this; while Naraku was weak.
Walking through the woods, Kikyo could hear the battle cries of Inuyasha and the wolf Kouga, and the shouts of the rest of their comrades. Kikyo then heard a cry that made her quicken her pace.

“Get your hands off Kagome!” Inuyasha screamed. Naraku had failed to take the jewel shard out of the unconscious miko’s hand, but now he had Kagome herself in his clutches. He lifted her to him as he deflected Inuyasha’s attack, causing the jewel shard slip out of her hand and fall to the ground.
Inuyasha was pushed back by Naraku’s deflection, and landed beside his friends, all standing, ready to fight. “Let Kagome go, you bastard!” Kouga yelled, flexing his claws.
Naraku grinned as he encircled Kagome’s throat with his hand, tilting her head up. “You are in no position to be delivering threats, wolf.”
Kouga and Inuyasha both growled in frustration. Inuyasha wanted to rip his throat out for even hinting at hurting Kagome, and it didn’t look like he was the only one, as he scanned his comrades. Everyone looked ready to kill; even Shippo’s demon aura was glowing slightly. Inuyasha knew Shippo saw Kagome as his sergeant mother and was protective of her, but he had never seen him so mad that his demon power actually bubbled out. Inuyasha couldn’t help but smirk at the kid. He was growing up; ready to fight for someone he loved.
Inuyasha’s thoughts were broken by a weak whisper. “Inuyasha…?” Kagome opened her eyes slightly, and then closed them again. Inuyasha’s heart gave an unsteady jump; he had never seen her so weak, so helpless. His grip on Tetsusaiga tightened as he growled deep in his throat, fighting back human tears of worry that threatened to break through.
“Inuyasha…” Kouga started in a whisper. “I’m going to attack him from the side, you swoop in and grab Kagome.”
Inuyasha nodded, sending Kouga off. Kouga zig-zagged around Naraku’s attacks, keeping a safe distance. Kouga made a few passes at him, holing his attention. The distraction was working as Inuyasha lunged forward to grab Kagome. //Hold on Kagome//.
“Dance of blades!” Kagura sent a wave of powerful wind in Inuyasha’s direction, forcing him to dodge //damn that wench, I was so close!//. Inuyasha landed, glaring at the wind sorceress, as Kouga was knocked away by Naraku.
Kagura jumped in front of Naraku, readying her fan for another attack. Naraku smiled. “I got half of what I came for.”
Inuyasha’s eyes widened as the poisonous insects surrounded Naraku. He was going to leave! The bastard was really going to leave and take Kagome with him! Inuyasha lunged for him once more. “Kagome!” But all he grabbed was air, as Naraku sped away, with the injured Kagome in his clutches. Inuyasha felt his knees buckle as he fell to the floor and yelled one last time for her. “Kagome!!”
But all he heard in response was his own echo. Inuyasha jumped up to chase after him, when he felt a sharp pain in his side, bringing him down to his knees again. He was bleeding. He felt his side with his hand and winced as he felt the deep gash there, steadily oozing out blood. When the hell had that happened? Inuyasha tried to remember, but gave up. It didn’t matter; all that mattered was going after the son of a bitch that took Kagome. He tried to stand again and failed. He clutched his side as he watched Naraku escape. //No…//

Sango watched as the monster flew away with her injured best friend in his arms. As soon as they saw his poisonous insects surround him, everyone had run after him, all knowing that he was trying to escape. The only one who got close enough to do anything was Inuyasha, but his wound slowed him down, as he barely missed Kagome.
Sango sank to the ground as tears rolled from her eyes. “Miroku…Kagome…” Sango didn’t know what to say. All she knew was she wanted to hear Miroku’s optimistic voice say that she would be all right, and that they would get her back. She found herself silently pleading to hear those words.
Miroku bent down and hugged the demon slayer. For once, there was no lust or lechery behind it, just comforting. “He won’t get away with it.”
Sango leaned into him and he held her tighter. Shippo jumped into her lap. The little kitsune’s eyes were brimmed with tears “Kagome’s gonna be okay, right?” Sango just wanted to hug the kid.
“Don’t worry, kiddo. Our Kagome can handle herself.” Kouga answered. He smiled down at Shippo. “I bet she won’t even need our help to get away. I guess we’ll just have to race to rescue her first before she does it herself.”
“You think so, Kouga?” Shippo looked up at him in hope.
Kouga smirked. “Hell yeah. Remember how she was when I kidnapped her?”
Shippo wiped his tears away and smiled. “You’re right. Kagome will be okay.”
Sango looked up at Kouga in thanks and amazement. Who knew the wolf demon was so good with kids? Shippo hopped off her lap and ran over to where Kagome had been laying. Sango was about to ask him what he was doing until she saw him circling the glowing jewel shard that still lay there.
They had all been surprised when the shard deflected Naraku’s touch. They had never seen it do that. Sango never knew that Kagome had gotten that powerful, and apparently, neither did anyone else. So, she couldn’t blame Shippo for his cautious behavior, as he put out one finger to poke it.
“Stop, little one.” Kikyo said as she came into the clearing. Shippo jumped at her appearance as Miroku strengthened his hold on Sango. Sango managed a smile. Who knew the monk could be so overprotective?
Kikyo walked up and retrieved the shard from the ground. “It would have purified a kit like yourself.” Kikyo stated with a softer tone than usual. Shippo squeaked and ran back to Sango, hugging her arm. Kikyo smiled slightly at his reaction, then turned her attention towards Inuyasha, who, for once, didn’t even notice her. She turned back to Miroku, not even bothering to break Inuyasha out of his revere. “I will hold on to the jewel until you retrieve Kagome.”
Sango looked up to see Miroku’s eyes narrow in thought. They then lightened as he sighed. “You’re probably the only one who can touch it besides her.”
Kikyo nodded. “I will be watching.” Kikyo took one last glance at the motionless Inuyasha and with that, she disappeared into the forest.
“Was it a good idea to let that thing take the jewel shard?” Kouga asked in general.
“As of right now, she is the best candidate.” Miroku stated. Sango felt like crying again. She sank into Miroku’s embrace and closed her eyes only to open them again at the sound of Kohaku walking towards Inuyasha. The sight of Inuyasha and the state he was in made Sango feel even more guilty. He looked so lost sitting there. Sango’s eyes began to sting with new tears. It was all her fault. If Kohaku and she hadn’t…all her fault. It was her fault that Inuyasha looked so defeated.
“Inuyasha…” Kohaku started as he reached Inuyasha’s side. Sango watched, holding her breath. What If Inuyasha lashed out at Kohaku? Sango got up to join her brother, with Miroku close behind.
“I…” Kohaku started again.
“Don’t even say it kid. It’s not your fault.” Inuyasha cut him off.
“But…”
“I said don’t even say it!” Inuyasha growled as he turned around. Sango could see redness in his glassy eyes, but not from demon rage.
Kohaku looked down to examine his feet. “But it is.” He whispered. “It is! Why isn’t anyone blaming me?” Kohaku yelled as his clenched fists began to shake.
Sango was surprised to see Inuyasha place his hand on Kohaku’s head, like he usually did with Shippo. “Kagome risked her life to save yours. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to kick the shit out of the person she was trying to save just to make me feel better.” Inuyasha then looked up at her. “I don’t want to hear any of your martyr shit either.”
Sango felt her tears welling up again as she nodded and hugged Kohaku to her. Inuyasha was right. Kagome almost died trying to save her little brother, and either of them blaming themselves would lessen that sacrifice. Sango refused to do that.
Inuyasha stood up. “How bad were Kagome’s injuries, Miroku?”
“Her wounds were not very deep, but she still runs the risk of…” Miroku looked down a Shippo, who was paying close attention. Miroku bit his lip and glanced over at Kouga who was standing by a finally conscious Kirara. Kouga arched his eyebrows at Miroku then looked down at Kirara.
Finally getting the idea, he bent down to retrieve the fire neko. “Hey kit! Come over here and help me with the neko.” Shippo bounded away, all too happy to help, as Miroku gave Kouga a silent thanks.
“She may die from loss of blood if not treated.” Miroku finished.
“Then we should get going before I lose his scent.” Inuyasha started to walk away until he grabbed his side and kneeled once again.
“No, you need to heal a little before we can do anything. Naraku will not let Kagome die, he needs her.” Miroku pointed out.
“But I’ll lose the scent!” Inuyasha growled as he stood up and turned to face them.
“You don’t need it.” Kohaku reassured them.
Inuyasha raised an eyebrow. “Huh?”
Kohaku cracked the first smile Sango had seen since their family died. “I know where his castle is.”
