Chapter 1 - A Very Deep Hole
The stars shined brighter than usual on the night of the full moon. Sitting on a sandy riverbank, a lone monk starred at his empty palms. It had been over a month since his family’s curse was broken, and his right hand still felt empty. As much as the monk had suffered from the deadly wind in his hand, he did not feel right without it.
“What should I do? I haven’t felt this helpless since father died. I can’t just stand by and let my friends fight all our battles for me.”
Ending that thought, the monk whipped around as a kitsune child stumbled out of the bushes.
“Miroku, do you know where Kagome is?” Shippo asked quietly, as the monk turned back to blankly stare at the dark river.
“Dunno, she said something about a hot spring near by. I think Sango went with her. It might be best if you stay away, Sango hits hard,” said Miroku, as he rubbed his cheek, a small grin crossing his face.
Shippo sighed heavily as he sulked away. Miroku returned to his thoughts when the sounds of the kitsune slowly faded, and he began to absentmindedly rub his right palm. Their final clash with Naraku had taken its toll, and though the wind tunnel was no longer with him, the pain lingered. As he readjusted himself on the shore, a charm fell out of his robes and settled on the surface of the calm water. He stared at it for a moment. As realization hit him, his eyes brightened, and he smiled as he watched the paper gracefully float down the river.
“There could be a way I can still help them…Lady Kaede would know how I might be able to-”
Before the monk was able to finish that thought, he heard a loud crash, followed by the screams of two women.

"Poor Miroku. He has been acting strange since we killed Naraku. I wonder if he misses his Wind Tunnel," thought Shippo, sitting in the bushes watching the monk. "Every night he stares at his hands. He hasn't even groped Sango for a while. I don't know what to say to him anymore. Kagome might know what I should say to him...and maybe he knows where she is..."
Standing up, Shippo started to walk out of the bushes, but stumbled over a large stick. He had wanted to be quiet when he approached Miroku, but that wasn't exactly the entrance he was making.
Noticing Miroku suddenly starring at him, he tried to regain his composure. “Miroku, do you know where Kagome is?” Shippo watched as the monk turned to face the river.
“Dunno, she said something about a hot spring near by. I think Sango went with her. It might be best if you stay here, Sango hits hard," Shippo muffled his giggle as he watched Miroku smile and rub his cheek.
With a loud sigh, Shippo retreated to the bushed and headed back towards their campsite. "Come to think of it, I thought I heard Sango and Kagome when I walked over here. No point in trying to talk to her while she is bathing, plus Sango's there. I guess I will have to wait until Kagome returns to camp later. I want to help Miroku, so I need to talk to Kagome to figure out what to say. I don't know where Kagome is, so I have to ask Miroku...It's a vicious cycle."
As he neared the springs, he heard girlish laughter...followed by a loud crashing noise. "I hope it's not a demon...This just isn't my night..."

“What do I really want? Becoming a full-fledged demon is what I always thought I wanted. But now…” InuYasha thought, as he stared at the pale moon from the boughs of a tall tree. “Things have become complicated lately. We need to recover the last three shards to complete the Sacred Jewel. What will we do then? There won’t be anything left to do…other than killing that stupid wolf and my bastard brother…Who am I kidding? I can’t kill Sesshoumaru. I can’t do that to Rin. He and Jaken are the closest thing to a family the kid has, and if I hurt Rin, Kagome would kill me. Kouga on the other hand…” InuYasha smiled at the image of tearing into the wolf demon with Tetsusaiga. “I’ll make sure Kagome is not around when I find that fucking wolf, that way she can’t tell me to-”
“Sit!”
InuYasha sharply growled when he heard the miko say that nasty little word. As he came crashing down, he caught a glimpse of Kagome in the hot spring. Had he not been flying down to meet the ground and hitting every branch along the way, he would have smiled. “Serves me right for picking a branch so fucking high up…”

“Kagome…what do you think will happen next?” asked Sango as she leaned back in the shallow steaming water.
“Hmm…what do you mean?”
“With Naraku gone, it just seems like there is nothing really left to do. It feels like we don’t always have to be looking over our shoulders when we travel anymore. Yeah, there are still demons out there, but none like Naraku. Everything seems too easy lately,” Sango said as she closed her eyes. Taking in the scent of the steam and the fragrant blooming flowers surrounding the hot spring, she quietly sighed.
“It has been pleasant without having to fight Naraku and his incarnations. We still have lots to do though,” Kagome said as she mindlessly started to fiddle with the nearly completed jewel hanging around her neck. “We still need to complete the jewel. Kouga has two of the remaining shards. We might have some trouble getting those back from him.”
“How do you figure?” asked the demon slayer innocently.
“I know he won’t be too thrilled about giving them up. I also worry about what he will want in exchange for the shards. As much as I know InuYasha wants to kill him, I like having Kouga around.”
Sango suppressed a giggle at Kagome’s last comment. “I don’t think InuYasha would KILL him...Just tear Kouga limb from limb and torture him with his bare hands for a while.”
Both girls started to laugh at that. Between breaths, Kagome said, “Yeah…right…the day Inu…Yasha doesn’t draw…Tetsusaiga around…Kouga…I will promise…never to tell InuYasha…to sit!”
Both girls jumped out of the water and screamed when they heard a loud crash in a tree all too close to where they bathed.
“What the hell was that for?” screamed a shaky voice next to the water’s edge, from a rather large hanyou-shaped hole in the ground.
“Where’s the demon?” Asked two other voices in unison as they came crashing though the brush.
Sango and Kagome shrieked again as they ducked back down in the water and tried to cover themselves, their faces reddening from both embarrassment and rage.
Miroku smiled as he shielded Shippo’s eyes. “Sango, my sweet, you are a vision of loveliness.” With that, Sango gave Kagome the ‘I-am-going-to-kill-him’ look as her cheeks found a new shade of deep red.
“Kirara!” Sango screamed as the fire cat jumped into the water and sloshed over to the girls. Kagome and Sango walked behind Kirara to shore to find their clothes as Miroku watched with interest.
By now, Shippo had removed the hand shielding his eyes. Seeing the girls behind the demon cat, the small kitsune tried desperately to drag Miroku away, but the monk defiantly stayed in place.
Sango dressed with lightening speed. As Kagome’s cheeks found a deeper of red, she whispered to Sango, “Umm…Sango? My clothes are…umm…over by…Miroku.”
Spotting Kagome’s clothes a few feet from Miroku, Sango gracefully walked over to him. Her innocent smile unnerved the monk. She stopped right in front of him and smiled. A moment later the echo of a wet hand meeting a monk’s cheek vibrated through the forest. Smiling again at Miroku, she stepped past him and knelt down to grab Kagome’s clothes. Returning to Kagome, she managed to slap Miroku’s other cheek harder with her free hand. The monk smiled back at her, sporting matching red marks.
Kagome shrieked again as InuYasha crawled out of his hole.
InuYasha turned a nice shade of pink, as he allowed his eyes to linger on Kagome, who was barely shielded from him by Kirara. “Kago-”
“Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!”
With that, InuYasha deepened his hole. A weak moan escaped him as he lay there. “I might’ve deserved one, but six? I think I am just going to stay here the rest of the night…maybe the rest of the week.”

"Kagome, do you really think that was necessary?" Asked Sango, glancing back to see Miroku standing over InuYasha's hole. Kirara walked a few paces behind them, still transformed.
"Oh, so now you’re taking HIS side? He saw you too!" Kagome fumed, more towards the men than Sango.
"No, I'm just saying it was an accident. You were the one who brought him crashing to the ground in front of us."
"Hmph...Well....He shouldn't have been so close," Kagome's tone lightened a bit. "I guess it was my fault. He was still looking at...me? I don't think I saw him even spare Sango a glance. Must have been my imagination..."
"Earth to Kagome?" They had stopped walking, and Sango was staring at her. Kagome felt the heat in her cheeks, and Sango's stare made it even warmer.
Kagome quickly looked away, hiding her blush. "Miroku was enjoying you as well."
Sango mirrored Kagome's reddened cheeks. "You really hit him hard this time. He was only looking out for your well being," Kagome smiled as Sango took her turn to look away.
"And now you’re on his side?" Sango replied, and both girls giggled, the frustration from the encounter rapidly fading away.
The fire crackled at the girls when they emerged from the brush, bringing with it a welcome wave of heat. Kagome and Sango unrolled their sleeping bags, still giggling at random moments. Kagome was the first to notice the sound of footsteps slowly creeping toward them. Without moving her eyes from where the sound was, she sidestepped over to Sango, tapping her shoulder.
"Kagome, wha-" Sango trailed off when she saw Kagome point, then back up for her bow. Before Kagome could arm herself, Shippo, looking ready to run for his life, crept out of the bushes.
"Shippo, you scared us! Why were you sneaking up on us?" Asked Sango, relief washing over her. "We thought you were a demon...well, a bad demon."
"A-are you guys...mad at me?" Shippo said, cringing.
"Why would we be mad at you?" Kagome asked, utterly confused at the terrified kitsune's questioning.
"The way you hit Miroku, and the big hole InuYasha's still probably in, I thought you would be mad at me too. You're not?" Shippo's eyes lit up, and his expression relaxed.
"Of course not, you didn't do anything. Where are InuYasha and Miroku?" Sango asked, smiling at Shippo, and almost feeling sorry for the men...almost.
"After InuYasha got out of the hole you had him make, he stormed off," Shippo sat down by the fire, Kirara curling up next to him. "Miroku ran after him, trying to tell him it was probably as accident. He wasn't angry about you hitting him, I think he kinda enjoys it."
"Perverted monk..." Thought Kagome.
"That lecherous monk..." Thought Sango, practically mirroring Kagome's thought. The girls looked at each other, both rolling their eyes.
