The Difference between Time and Distance
A Sesshoumaru Tale

Ayame's eyes were locked onto the young man, while he stared suspiciously at Aya. Silence was prominent in the air. Ayame would be bothered if she wasn't used to it, but that was what she lived in. silence. This quiet was a bit tense though, at least until a shriek cut into the air.

“Inuyasha! What are you doing!?”

Ayame glanced back and Kagome, only to be rewarded with horrified glances taking place at Inuyasha, then back at Aya.

Ayame was thoroughly scared. She really wasn't used to people, but this was insane. Kagome was acting really strange. It wasn't that bad, at least, Ayame thoughts so. Kagome soon recovered, raggedly taking in deep, gulping breaths.

She turned apologetically to Ayame, “I'm sorry.” Kagome turned politely, intending to introduce them, “this is Inuyasha. As you can see, he's into cosplay.”

Aya flatly looked at Kagome in disbelief, then back at Inuaysha, who looked as though ready to kill someone. Then she let it go, smiling softly back.

“Nice to meet you. I'm Ayame.”

“What's wrong with your face? Are you a demon!?” Inuyasha demanded. Kagome paled. Ayame smiled nervously, not sure how to react, slightly hurt.

“Inuyasha…” Kagome growled, “Ayame is from half way around the world. She's foreign! Meaning she looks different.”

“She sounds funny too.” He stated flatly, sniffing the air. “Hey, is there any ramen around?”

Kagome was fuming. Ayame turned to readily placate her, “Don't worry it. This is my second language. I need to work on it a bit; he's just stating the truth.”

The odd looking boy disregarded her words, setting himself down next to a flustered Kagome. Ayame stared down at the table, glancing up periodically at the aggressive young mans ears. He was especially tactless, but Ayame didn't mind.

What she really wondered was if he really was a cosplayer. Those ears did not look fake. Actually, she had the impression that there was actual blood flowing through them. Or they were just stapled on. Both were very likely possibilities.

And then the hair… and the eyes… Aya was enraptured. She had never seen anybody with this guy's appearances. He was just so...different. She was thoroughly interested in him. But, like with all others, she acted politely—quietly—indifferent.

The air about them felt strained. After a few more moments of the oddly loud clinking of utensils and food, Ayame had enough.

“Uhm, thank you very much Higurashi-sama, Kagome, the meal was wonderful, but I should probably be leaving now.”

“So soon?' Kagome asked, sounding a little put out. She felt a little bad for having Inuyasha appear with Aya visiting. The girl was probably scared to death of visiting now, thinking they were complete freaks.

Ayame was a little nervous around them, but she was like that with most people she didn't know very well. None of it showed through, and she smiled apologetically.

“Yeah, I've got a ton of homework, and it's getting late. It was really nice of you to invite me over though. Or, well, invite me in for dinner. Thank you.”

Kagome's mom smiled, “Of course, you're welcome any time Ayame-chan. Kagome, please show your friend to the door.”

Ayame followed Kagome as she led her out of the house. Outside Kagome rounded on her.

“I'm so sorry about Inuyasha. He really just doesn't know how to interact with people. He's not used to them, and he's never really seen anybody not Asian before.” As an after-thought she added, “He's also just weird. And sometimes really rude and not so socially smart…so, yeah.”

Ayame smiled again, laughing slightly, “I sympathize. But I might have an idea of what he feels. Don't worry about. I really don't mind.”

They quickly exchanged goodbyes once again, then Ayame was left in front of the house alone, darkness upon her. She hefted her bags, sighed, and began to head towards the difficult stairway.

“Lord Sesshoumaru, we need to speak about these matters. You have been avoiding them for too long.”

Sesshoumaru stared impassively at the older demon—a weasel youkai, if he remembered correctly. The elder was peering at Sesshoumaru through thick, long eyebrows, sprinkled gray and black with age. His hair, though tight against his head, was scraggly once out of the hair band. His robes were loose and slightly wrinkled, though they were still ornate and sewed of very expensive material. The man looked flustered as well, though he suppressed it with well fostered patience. Unfortunately, Sesshoumaru seemed to try this patience, which was truly amazing. Not many were able too.

Sesshoumaru was also feeling his patience waver, and his brow furrowed slightly at the persistence of the old man.

“Those matters are unimportant right now. I've other business to attend.”

“But my lord! If you do not reply to the Northern lord's message he may become upset, and set upon us a war.”

“Then reply for me.”

“What should I say?” Questioned the old man hopefully.

“No.”

Despair filled the elder's eyes, “But Lord Sesshoumaru! This is an unsurpassable offer! His daughter is rumored to very beautiful, very trained, and very pure of blood. What more could you want?”

“Nothing, Hassouli, I want nothing.”

Hassouli watched his lord dejectedly as Sesshoumaru swept down the hall, long hair flowing behind him majestically.

The old man's shoulders slumped. Great, he would probably leave again. He always did when problems arouse. Hassouli knew people would be skeptical, but Sesshoumaru notoriously avoided his lordly duties. Too much of a wonderer, Hassouli thought, with his few disrespected companions.

He sighed again, looking even more pitiful with his defeated form. His dream was for Sesshoumaru to take up his burden and snatch a mate, bringing color back to the household.

It really was not meant to be.

Sesshoumaru growled to himself mentally, frustration building up with each passing moment.

He had only come back because of Rin's exhaustion, and since there was no need for him to travel with Naraku dead now, he couldn't avoid the state affairs any longer. Yet Sesshoumaru—and he didn't admit this often—knew he had made a mistake. While most of his advisors, with time, had disappeared, losing hope in their conquest to tame him, a few had remained. Actually that was one—Hassouli.

Frustrating geezer, really. Yet somehow Sesshoumaru wouldn't kill him, the old man had been around too long. And, so Sesshoumaru felt, had he. It was time to get moving, to leave. Rin should be rested up, along with Jaken, so they should be ready to, once again, travel.

Sesshoumaru went in search for those under his care. It was time to go.

Note: I'm sorry it's so short. My dog died and I've got a ton of homework. Also, I lose the computer to my brother and his stupid world of warcraft in a few minutes, so I have to cut it short. By the way, I forgot to mention this, though you probably know it by now. This Ayame is not he sam as the wolf demon Ayame. You know, Koga's fiancé. They are two totally different characters. And if you hadn't noticed (because I didn't say this either) this is a sess/OC fic.

Anyways, it should get more interesting soon. I'm just setting everything up. Rate and review, and the next one will come out faster. That also goes for my other rin/sessy series. Which I'm actually thinking of turning it into a one shot, and not go any further.

Also,(sorry, I'm rambling) check out my quizilla account. I've got some other fanfics on there, and though there not that great, I would really enjoy if you read them, then critique me. I really want to improve my writing. And I've noticed I'm doing really horrible so far with this fic. It's my first time writing 3rd person. By the way, my quizilla account is under the exact same username, so you can search for me.

Anyways, sorry, I'll try to update soon.

Later.
