The End
By: Annabrea Shaw
Bleep-bloop Kikyo picked up the phone, anticipating the new text message inside.
`Go out wit me?'
She stared. InuYasha, cute guy and her friend's long time crush, was asking her out? I don't like him…but I could…
`Okay'
And she wouldn't know it for a while, but she'd just ruined a friendship.
~~approximately 8 months later~~
“Kikyo! Hey Kikyo! If you're gonna ignore me, that's undeniably and pathetically annoying!” the girl paused, allowing her pursuer to catch up. “I wanna talk to you.”
“Well I don't wanna talk to you.”
“Get over it.” The brunette leaned against the wall, studying her friend. “You're pissed because I fought with InuYasha, huh?”
“No.”
“Then why won't you talk to me? Why won't you even look at me?” her response was met with a stubborn silence. “Chill, I don't want to talk about InuYasha…Well, not really.”
“Kagome, look. I don't care that you guys fought, alright.” Kagome scoffed. “Bullshit. I called you some things and I insinuated that I thought you guys should break up, of course you care. But I don't care that you care or that you're trying to convince me that you don't. I've been thinking the last few days and I finally figured it out.” She was then graced with a suspicious look.
“Figured what out?”
“Why you and InuYasha bother me so much. Kinda sad that it's taken me eight months, huh?” Kikyo had the decency to look worried, that was good. Let her be scared. Let me hurt her so bad, she'll know how I feel.
“Okay…” She hesitated “…Why?” Kagome shrugged.
“You said yes.”
Kikyo looked confused. Come on, take it. Ask me what I mean. Let me explode. Kikyo did not disappoint.
“I think I know what you mean, but…could you clarify?”
“You said yes. InuYasha asked you out, and you said yes.” Kikyo looked like she wanted to say something, so Kagome plowed on with a renewed strength. Now that I'm started, I won't stop.
“You knew he'd just broken my heart, you knew I hated him. And you said yes! You didn't even like him and you knew I did and you said YES! You didn't think about how I would feel - Oh wait!
“Yes you did! You didn't want to tell me. Can you imagine how I felt when I found out. I was sitting in my dad's room with Sango, being as normal and happy as I can considering that less than two weeks before I had had my heart ripped out my chest, torn into a billion pieces, stomped on and shoved back down my throat, and Sango mentions - in passing - `did you hear InuYasha asked Kikyo out?'
“And when I asked her when, she said he had said the week before. And I call you, praying that it's not true, that he lied. And you answer and all you can say is “I didn't want to tell you.”
Tears were streaming down both their faces as Kikyo turned around. Kagome grabbed her arm before she could even take a step, pushing her to the wall next to them. “NO! Listen to me! It's taken me eight fucking months to figure this out and you're going to listen to ever word I have to say!”
“Did you even consider how I would feel? Did you even consider asking me if I would care! NO! You didn't give a SHIT about me!
“I've spent the last eight months telling myself that it was my fault. That if I wasn't so worthless InuYasha wouldn't have asked me out. That you had every right to say yes. But I was wrong!
“Ask anyone, a real friend wouldn't have done what you did, a real friend wouldn't have said yes! If you really cared about me, if you really were my friend, you wouldn't have considered his question before you said no.
“If you were really my friend, you would have at least called me before you said yes. If you cared about me at all, you would have told me first! You wouldn't have let me find out from Sango after InuYasha told her a week later!”
Kagome stepped back, the tear streaks across her cheeks failing to hide the disgusted glare she was leveling her former best friend with. Kikyo stared, sliding down the wall to sit on the ground, not bearing to tear her eyes from the pained ones of her friend.
“I hate you.”
And it was then, as Kagome turned around, wiping her eyes as she walked with steady steps to her next class, that Kikyo really understood just what she'd done.
It is now, as the words scroll across the page, that one girl learns of the pain she inflicted.
And it is now that a friendship ends.
