InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Enigma of Power ❯ A bath for two ( Chapter 1 )

Kagome leaned her back against the warm stones of the pool walls. She was glad she'd spotted the hot springs. A week on the road with just Inuyasha and Shippou had her feeling more than a little tense. Sango and Miroku had remained in a small village that was being plagued by a rather persistent youkai who seemed to enjoy burning the crops. Inuyasha, in typical form, had not seen any point in hanging about, and for once Miroku and Sango agreed with him. So she went ahead with him to the next town where they had slain a mantis youkai and retrieved a jewel shard. However the town residences were less than happy with their presence, so they had decided to head back to where they had left the others then go from there. They had another day's worth of travel ahead of them, and Kagome was not looking forward to it. Shippou loved making jabs at Inuyasha, and the besieged hanyou only responded by becoming more and more irate. She slipped underwater and blew out her air, watching the bubbles rise to the surface. When she came up, there was a little girl watching her from the trees. Kagome gave the girl her warmest smile.

"Hello. Are you lost?" The girl shook her head. "Oh, then there is no one looking for you?"

She shook her head again. "Otousan said I was to come here to bathe. Otousan said it was safe."

Kagome began to wonder if she wasn't being spied on. "Is your father near?"

She pointed off into the woods. "He's that way, but it's a long walk. He said that I should come here alone because it wasn't right for him to come with me."

Kagome nodded, that made sense. "You want to come in then? The water's great."

The little girl nodded and stripped, climbing into the water. Kagome fished around in her bag and found her shampoo and conditioner along with a bar of soap.

"My name is Rin, what's yours?"

"I'm Kagome. Do you want me to wash your hair for you?"

"Really? Could you?"

She laughed softly. "Of course."

She pulled the ribbons from Rin's hair and began to wash it. She learned that Rin was five "I think" and traveling with her father and his friend to a place she wasn't sure of, but it was very far. Kagome rinsed out her kimono and the two played for a short time while Rin's clothes dried. Kagome couldn't help but smile. In the year she had been coming through the well she'd found that her most joyful moments were those spent with children. She'd all but given up on the hopes that Inuyasha would return her affections and was willing to settle for being friends with the hanyou. He would never have to know she'd been in love with him. She helped Rin dress then rose from the pool herself.

"I could walk you back, if you want. The woods can be confusing at night."
