InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Enigma of Power ❯ The Journey Begins ( Chapter 15 )
Inuyasha paced by the well waiting for Kagome to come through. He glanced at the sun. If she wasn't there by noon he would go through and fetch her. He snorted softly and jumped up into a tree only to jump back down and continue pacing. Shippou lay napping in a warm patch of grass while Sango and Miroku fawned over each other. It really was quite sickening to watch them act that way. He couldn't believe that Kagome had ever thought he would act that stupid. There was a flurry of movement by the well and he turned to see Sesshomaru leap skyward. He swore and snarled at the same.
"Sit!" The command slammed him into the ground before he could act. Kagome stepped from the circle of Sesshomaru's arms and knelt beside him. "I need you to behave for a few minutes. Can I count on that?"
Inuyasha growled into the dirt but nodded. Sango and Miroku glanced between her and Sesshomaru. Sango was the first to find her voice. "Kagome-san, what's going on here?"
"Sesshomaru-sama is taking me to a teacher."
"Subaru-sensei?"
"No, a different teacher, someone who specializes in my type of magic."
Inuyasha pushed himself to his feet. "And why would he be willing to do that?"
"He cares."
"And here I thought you couldn't get a stupider."
Sesshomaru's attack was so fast no one saw it. One moment Inuyasha was standing there sneering, the next he was laying on his back with Tokijin pressed against his throat.
"You will never speak disrespectfully to Kagome-sama again."
Inuyasha's eyes widened suddenly. He did not move a muscle or even try to respond. Sesshomaru was acting as though Kagome was his mate. Carefully, Inuyasha averted his gaze to the ground at Sesshomaru's feet. His ears flattened against his head. A soft whimpering noise emerged from his throat and Sesshomaru lowered the sword, satisfied by his show of submission. Kagome smiled at them.
"I'm glad you two could work that out." She turned a warmer smile on Sango, Miroku, and Shippou. "Honestly, everything is all right. But I might be gone for a long while."
Shippou's lip began to jut in the beginnings of a pout. "You're…you're leaving us?"
She knelt and opened her arms to him. He came at a run, almost knocking her over. "I could never leave you. I want you to come with me. Rin-chan is going to be there."
"What about Jaken-san?"
"No, he's not coming."
Shippou's pout was genuine. "So I won't get to play with him?"
Kagome's sweet laugh seemed to ripple through the clearing, calming frayed nerves and jumbled emotions. "I don't think he'd survive you and Rin-chan playing with him."
She lifted him into her arms and turned to Sesshomaru. "I will carry you, if you become exhausted, the fall could kill you both."
She smiled in relief and nodded to the others before returning to the circle of his arms. He lifted her and leapt skyward, skimming over the trees for several miles before landing in a small clearing. Jaken stood waiting with Rin. He immediately prostrated himself before Sesshomaru.
"Sesshomaru-sama, forgive this Jaken for not coming to find you."
"You did well." Jaken looked up shocked as Rin ran over and hugged him around the knees.
"We could not find you Otousan."
"I was beyond your reach, Rin-chan. We will go now. Jaken, return to the palace and make sure everything is in order. If you need me, send Ah-Un to find me. I will be gone for some time. Inform Subaru-sensei that I am taking Kagome-sama to the Wanderers."
Jaken paled, an amazing feat considering his green skin. "Th…the Wanderers?"
Sesshomaru looked at Jaken, waiting for him to elaborate. Under the intensity of that gaze, Jaken stumbled back. He bowed and began babbling about his messages as he beat a hasty retreat. Kagome was watching Sesshomaru. What was there about these people that would cause Jaken to have such a reaction? His actions were not lost on Rin and Shippou either. Shippou clung to her and Rin shifted her grip to Kagome's legs. Sesshomaru nodded to them. It was time to go. Kagome shifted Shippou to her shoulder and lifted Rin into her arms. Sesshomaru wrapped his arms around her. A strange cloud formed beneath them, lifting them up into the void. Rin whimpered and hid her face in Kagome's chest. Shippou increased his death-grip on her neck and hid in her hair.
Kagome made soft cooing noises and soon, both were asleep. She gazed up at Sesshomaru as he concentrated on where they were going. It was so beautiful here with him. She felt warm and loved, like the mother of a happy family. She belonged here with him and the children. She looked down at Rin. He loved her so much. Suddenly a thought occurred to Kagome, Rin was human. That meant she was mortal.
"Sesshomaru?"
"Hai."
"When the Shikon no tama is complete, I would like to make Rin an inu youkai. Is that alright with you?"
He looked down at her and she could see shock and joy filling his eyes. "Hai."
"Sesshomaru?"
"Hai."
"When I die, you will take care of Shippou won't you?"
"Hai."
She fell silent and simply relaxed in his arms, enjoying the flight. She rested her head against him and closed her eyes. Even the trip through the well and activating the prayer beads, things she once did without thought, had tired her. Sesshomaru watched her as she fell to sleep in his arms. It would be several hours until they got to the great desert and the place the Wanderers called the Gates to Hell. He hoped he was doing the right thing. He loved her and he wanted the best for her. The Wanderers might be able to help her.
