Chapter 2
Kagome ran as fast as she could. She couldn't believe she was so stupid. "I am going to regret that for the rest of my life." Her breath came out in fast short gasps as she tried to use all of her will to catch up to what she lost.
Up ahead the one she was persueing turned the corner into a dark alleyway.
She cursed when she came around the corner. All she saw was the black shadows that could be hiding the thief. She didn't know how strong he was just that she had to get back what he stole from her. Also he had a dark aura and any youkai with a dark aura was bound to be trouble, no matter how strong or weak.
Her eyes strained to see something that might betray the youkai, but she could see nothing. "Shit. This isn't good." She drew up enough of her miko power to create a light with her palm. The power warmed her palm as it illuminated the alley.
A scratching noise above her caught her attention. When she looked up she caught a glimpse of the youkai climbing over the ledge of the building next to her. "Fuck. I am so screwed now." She leaned her head against the brick wall and closed her eyes. Kagome calmed her mind and focused on the youki that was moving away from her. It was heading back the way they came from. "That bastard."
She steeled herself for another sprint across town to catch the youkai. Kagome let some of her energy flow into her legs to lessen the strain on them and make it easier to catch the youkai. With her body reenergized she took off.
As she ran she went over what the youkai looked like. It was small, almost shapeless, and from what she could tell was rather strong. Earlier she had seen eyes and a mouth on the youkai so she knew there was something else about it that was bothering her. She couldn't narrow down what it was though.
Even as she ran it seemed like the youkai was getting further and further away. 'Wait!' Kagome stopped. The youki was weaker... She was following a decoy. "You have got to be kidding me!" She put her hands on her head and focused with all her power on the youkai she had followed to the alley just minutes ago.
He was going the same direction, but he was closer. Kagome's eyes shot open, "Oh my god. No!" She took off again with renewed strength and determination. She could not let him get to where he was trying to go. That would be a disaster. The youkai was headed towards her old home, he was going towards the Bone Eater's well and to the past.
When finally the stairs of the massive shrine came into view Kagome pushed herself even more. She couldn't let him get to the well, too much of her life was given up to protect everyone in the past from what was lurking in the future. If he got back there everything she did would have been in vain.
She reached the top of the stairs and looked at the well house, the door was wide open. Time gave way to caution, she could not afford to go into there recklessly. Kagome pulled her bow from her back and nocked an arrow. She walked to the well house as one would approach a slumbering lion.
The inside was dark though faintly illuminated as it had always been. A flash from the coming storm lit the room for a second and Kagome's heart sank. The wards had been ripped off the well. Still cautious, Kagome walked down the stairs with her arrow pointed at the mouth of the well.
"Miko, you know that you are powerless to stop me."
Kagome didn't fall for the trick, she would keep quiet. She stopped moving but her arrow never left the well.
"You may have saved the past once but you can not stop me. My power is twice that of yours, and now with this I am invicible."
She gritted her teeth, this speech was getting old. Every youkai she had slain said it to her thinking they could trick her, it had gotten them nowhere. If he got into the past though there was no telling what he would do. It would all be her fault, it was because of her that he had a part of the Shikon no Tama.
Another flash showed her what she feared most, he was at the lip of the well glaring at her. The pure pink glow of the Shikon was revealed as he removed it from the bag he had. Some how that bag prevented Kagome from sensing the jewel piece he had taken.
"You defeated Naraku only with the help of those around you. Now what will you do when they are no longer able to help? You should have known I would be prepared for the downfall of Naraku. I will finish what he could not."
Kagome pulled her bow back and aimed but it was too late. He dropped into the well. She knew the well had taken him through because his youki immediately vanished. She released the tension on her bow and sighed, even if she had shot she would have just destroyed the well. That would have left everyone in the past vunerable to this youkai and the shard of the Shikon he had.
"Crap." She leaned against the railing then sat on the stairs. Kagome knew what she had to do, there was only one thing. She had to go back.
There was no way Inuyasha would have sensed the youkai coming through the well and even if he did he wouldn't bother with it because the youkai seemed weak. She couldn't count on them sensing the Shikon thanks to that bag, so she had to go back.
"After everything I gave up to come back here I have to go back." A trail of tears made their way down Kagome's cheeks. She would have to explain to everyone why she left. 'Easier said than done.'
With a heavy sigh Kagome got up. 'Damn, now I have to get home somehow.' She groaned. "I guess I could just stay here tonight." She went to the once bustling house and unlocked the door, she knew no one was there except Buyo. Everyone had gone on vacation to the Americas for a few weeks.
Kagome made her way up stairs tp her old room. She pushed the door open and sighed when all of her things were as she left them. As her mother said she wouldn't move anything. Feeling the strain from running and using her miko power as long as she did, Kagome dropped onto the bed. She was asleep before her head even hit the pillow.
~*~
Kagome packed the necesities for her trip back to the one place she thought she'd never see again. She packed very few clothes knowing she could just wash them when needed, the only things she really needed she already had. Though every thing was in the bag she tried with all her might to pospone the trip, thinking of the littlest thing to keep her from going. It was almost sunset when she called her boss.
"Hello?"
"Sir, it's me Kagome. I have to be going away for a while." She sighed, "I'm not sure when I will get back."
"Is it business related or pleasure?"
Kagome rolled her eyes, "More business than pleasure sir."
"Now Kagome what have I told you? You need to get out and date, see someone. Get over whatever happened in your past, I know you can, you are stronger than most men I know."
She laughed, "I know, but my thick skull wont let me meet new people sir."
"Oh really? Is there the slightest chance that you will see this heart-breaker in the near future?"
"Yeah, while I'm away I'll see him. He's where I am going to be."
"Well, you should remind him how much of a beauty he passed up. Flaunt, show him what he gave up." There was a brief silence, then her boss said, "Is this serious business Kagome?"
"Yeah, something happened. I can't say what, but hopefully I can fix it."
"Alright, I want you to be careful."
"Okay I will."
"And good luck Kagome."
"Thank you, sir. Bye." She hung up and stared at the phone for a second.
All of her old memories resurfaced. What she gave up to be in the future when she was needed, even if she didn't want to be there. She left everything and everyone she loved back in Feudal Japan. It was the hardest thing she had ever had to do. Kagome didn't know if she could leave a second time if she had to, she wasn't sure that the future was worth losing the people she loved more than anything else.
She looked out the window and saw that the sun had already set. Not wanting to go late in the evening Kagome decided to make the trip into the past tomorrow morning. There was no more stalling, she couldn't afford to lose anymore time finging the youkai who had the Shikon shard. A sigh passed her lips and once again tears found their way down her face.
Confronting all of her friends would be hard, she left them without a word. She didn't tell anyone where she was going or that she was going at all. Only one person knew she was leaving and Kagome knew he would understand when she told him. Even if it hurt, she had to leave him and her friends.
~*~
Inuyasha glared at his brother across the clearing. He smirked, "You're going down Sesshoumaru!" He rushed at him with the Tetsusaiga pointed forward.
He shook his head and sidestepped. His amused eyes watched Inuyasha as her turned around and growled, "I don't know why you bother Inuyasha, I am stronger than he is. You should just ask him to help you."
"I tried, remember you were there!"
"You wanted to go with us, not ask for help. Those are two different things." He looked over at Shippo, "That's enough Shippo." Immediately Sesshoumaru's form shimmered and Kaido stood in his place. "Fighting me while Shippo makes it look like you're fighting my father won't help and you know it Inuyasha."
He put Tetsusaiga back into his sheath, "I don't care! He won't fight me seriously, he never has." Inuyasha looked into the starry night, "Sesshoumaru doesn't think I'm worth the time."
Kaido sighed, "Come on Inuyasha lets head back into the village. I'm sure dinner is ready."
Shippo jumped up and down, "Yeah! I'm starving after holding that illusion for so long." He rubbed his stomach and licked his lips, "I wonder what Kaede is making?"
"Well, lets go see."
The kit ran far ahead of them not wanting to wait. Kaido was focused ahead and was really not paying much attention to Inuyasha. Too many thoughts were on his mind ever since he heard Inuyasha tell all those stories about his father. After he and his father got home Kaido asked his father about his past and even his mother.
His father didn't say much, like he alway did. The only thing he got from him was that his mother was the kindest youkai he had ever met and that he had fallen in love with her when she was different. He didn't understand that but his father wouldn't tell him what he meant.
"Kaido?"
He was startled out of his thoughts, "Huh?"
"What is Sesshoumaru like when it's just you two? I mean the first time I saw you and him together in that clearing he was crying with you. I have never seen him show so much emotion. I never thought Sesshoumaru would ever cry like he did."
"Well, my father is... I don't know how to describe it really, because my father never act like he does towards you around me." Kaido smiled, "When I was five he took me out of the palace to the surrounding forest and we played all day. I would hide and he would hunt me and I would do the same to him. We played in one of the lakes for a long time and after the sun had set I fell asleep on his lap."
"Sesshoumaru did that?"
"Yeah, he is serious when he needs to be and whenever we are in public, but when we take time for just us my father has fun and laughs."
"Wow, whoever your mother is she must be something to change Sesshoumaru so much."
"I wish I knew."
They walked into the hut in silence and silence is what they found. Everyone had their heads down and Shippo was crying quietly to himself. Kirara was in Sango's lap mewling softly while Miroku held Sango. Inuyasha had no idea what was going on, then his nose caught a strong scent in the small hut. Death.
He stepped into the back room where Kaede was lying on her futon. She appeared to be asleep but Inuyasha knew otherwise. "Kaede?"
Her eye opened slowly and searched blindly for Inuyasha, "Fear not Inuyasha yer not rid of me yet. I have a little longer yet." The old miko's breath came out in ragged gasps.
Inuyasha didn't say anything, he nodded and stepped out into the main room. Everyone looked at him expectantly, "She's still alive."
Kaido looked around the room at the faces of those who were mourning for what was soon to come. He knew it was not his place to be there anymore, "Inuyasha I will be leaving now."
He nodded, "Are you coming back tomorrow?"
"Yeah, I think so. Unless I can't, I will."
~*~
Inuyasha was up for most of the night and watched the sun come up. He stayed up incase Kaede passed in the night, he didn't want her to be alone when she died. He wanted her to know that they were there for her and that she was loved and would be missed. With Kaede's passing would come some problems.
It was mostly by her aura that the youkai stayed away from the village. When she was gone Inuyasha would have to be careful and take care of any youkai who came to investigate.
After being up Inuyasha had decided on something, if he ever saw Kagome again he would reconcile their pasts. He would do everything in his power to get Kagome back and never lose her again. Though he was hanyou, Inuyasha didn't have the forever a youkai did. He would age and eventually die. When that time came Inuyasha wanted to be sure that he didn't have any regrets in life. As it stood, Kagome was his biggest regret.
"Inuyasha."
He turned and faced Miroku, "What are you doing up monk?"
"Tell me something Inuyasha."
"What?"
"Sango, is she pregnant? I know you can smell it."
"Yeah she is."
"And what of Kaede?"
"She still alive, but her life is fading."
"I see." Miroku cleared his throat, "Come inside while I prepare breakfast."
"Fine."
Stepping into the hut Inuyasha found that everyone was awake and a little more cheerful than they were the previous night.
~*~
Kagome put her backpack on and steeled her nerves for the day ahead. She sighed and stepped out the door. After she locked it she looked at the well house, her fear was begining to rise. If she went back to help fix what she had done there was a chance that she wouldn't come home ever again. She would stay where she had longed to be since she returned. She could be with her friends, she could be with him.
She took a deep breath and on shaky feet started walking towards the well house and whatever the past might bring her way. Kagome opened the door and smiled when she saw that her grandfather had put more of his spirit wards on the well. At the bottom she could see their newest cat Mai playing with a twig. Buyo had found a female so they let her stay with them.
Mai mewled as she passed, but Kagome didn't spare the cat a second glance. All of her attention was on the portal that lead to the past. It was this well that made her life turn upside down ten years ago. She found love, friends, and a family that she had missed when she left. Through all of her adventures in the past she exprienced joy, pain, hate, and love. After losing Inuyasha she found a love that she would never forget and it was because of this love that Kagome was afraid.
She told him she was never coming back and now she was. Fear bit at her insides like it had never before.
One last deep breath was all it took, Kagome stepped up to the lip of the well and effortlessly jumped in.
The sun greeted her as she looked up from the bottom of the well. She had done it, she was back in the past where she felt she belonged. Kagome jumped from the bottom of the well and landed on the edge of the well. Unable to help herself Kagome smiled and even laughed. Clean air filled her lungs along with the fresh scent of flowers.
Though her time was short and she needed to get to the youkai immediately Kagome sat by the well. She would wait for Inuyasha as she had in the past.
~*~
Inuyasha frowned. He had suddenly caught a wiff of Kagome's scent and he had no idea why. It wasn't just a passing thing either, it didn't go away.
"Hey!" Shippo shot to the door and pulled back the mat and sniffed. "I smell Kagome's scent!"
Everyone looked at Shippo in shock. Miroku looked at Inuyasha, "Do you smell it too Inuyasha?"
"I do." He stood up, "Come on let's go check this out."
Sango stood with Miroku at her side and Kirara at her feet. Inuyasha led the way with Shippo on his shoulder. They all made their way to the place where Kagome's scent was coming from. The clearing with the well.
As they broke through the tree line the sun was bright in their eyes. It took a secind to blink away the bright light and it was then that each of them held their breath. Kagome was sitting on the well with a bag near her feet, she was smiling at them but her eyes held a deep sadness that only Miroku and Sango saw.
Very slowly each of them walked toward Kagome as if they were afraid she might disappear at any second. Even Shippo was rubbing his eyes to make sure he wasn't seeing things. Kirara mewled and ran to the miko. It wasn't until Kagome laughed and started petting Kirara that they truly knew their friend had returned.
Shippo broke into tears and jumped into Kagome's arms, hugging her with all his strength. He looked up when he felt her put her hand on his head. A smile dawned on his face when he saw that she too had tears in her eyes. "Kagome!" He latched onto her with renewed force.
"Shippo, I've missed you so much." She hugged him closer to her chest and let the tears fall.
Everyone stood around Kagome as she held the young kit in her arms. When she finally looked up everyone was smiling and Sango was also crying. With a small smile Kagome saw that Inuyasha and Miroku also had tears in their eyes. Still holding Shippo and with Kirara on her shoulder Kagome stood up and looked into the eyes of each of her friends.
Sango was the first to approach her with tears openly falling down her cheeks. She hugged Kagome as tightly as Shippo had and cried on Kagome's shoulder. "Kagome I never thought I would see you again. Why did you leave?" She pulled away from the miko and tried to look into her eyes but Kagome was looking at Inuyasha.
"We need to talk about that but not out here." She closed her eyes, "Kaede."
Inuyasha's ears went back, "She's dying. She won't last very long Kagome, you should see her before she dies."
She nodded, "Alright lets go then. After I see Kaede I will explain as much as I can about why I left and why I came back."
~*~
Kaede was lying on her back in the back room of the small hut. A blanket was draped over her and Kagome could see the sweat that beaded on her face. She sat next to the old miko and put a wet rag on her face. At once Kaede's one good eye opened at focused on Kagome and she smiled. "I new ye would return. Ye truly belong here Kagome."
She smiled despite her tears, "I wish it was that simple Kaede."
"He's gorgeous Kagome."
Kagome tried to hold back her gasp but it came out as a choked sob and more tears fell from her eyes. "Kaede, I can't thank you enough for everything you have done for me."
Kaede reached out and put her wrinkled hand on Kagome's hand and smiled, "I leave the safety of the village in your hands Kagome." Her eye closed and her breath became shallow. With her last breath Kaede said, "The youkai ye are seeking went south."
Kagome's eyes widened, "Kaede..." The old miko was already gone and didn't hear Kagome. She bowed her head and said a prayer for the old miko that had done so much for her. "Thank you Kaede."
She pulled the blanket over Kaede's face and stood up. She stepped out into the main room and looked into the faces of all her friends, "Kaede is gone."
Miroku bowed his head, "We will lay her to rest next to her sister." He stood up, "Inuyasha help me do this."
He nodded and said nothing.
It wasn't until nearly dark when they all gathered in Kaede's hut again. Kaede had been laid to rest by Miroku and Inuyasha, Kagome and Sango told the villagers about the news. Most of the villagers took it hard, but others saw the light from the dark situation, Kagome was there so they would be alright.
Sango stroked Kirara's fur and looked at Kagome, "Why did you leave and not say anything?"
She sighed, "Youkai were becoming more abuntant in my time and I needed to be there to deal with them. I would have told you but I couldn't, it was too hard and it seemed like I was making it permanent. I wanted to believe I would come back, even if in my heart I doubted it."
"Why did you come back then?"
"Inuyasha!" Sango glared at him.
"No it's alright Sango. I had to come back." Kagome closed her eyes and saw the youkai that had fooled her. "I lost a part of the Shikon to a youkai from my time. He came here so I followed."
"What?!" Inuyasha jumped up, "You broke the Shikon again?!"
"No! I still have the bigger piece, but I lost a sliver of it."
Miroku cleared his throat, "How did you lose it?"
"I was headed back to my apartment and I saw a child in the road. I ran to help him and it was then that he grabbed the Shikon and tried to shatter it. I managed to keep him from doing that but he ran away with part of it. I chased after him until we got to the well and he jumped in." A sad smile found its way to her lips, "I never thought I would come back here, but I had to."
Inuyasha walked to the door, "What are we waiting for? Lets go now. We can't loose anymore ground on this guy."
"Now? Inuyasha we can't leave the village unprotected. Someone has to stay here." Kagome looked around at her friends, 'Sango is pregnant and Miroku will want to stay here with her, so Inuyasha, Shippo, and I will leave tomorrow.' "Alright, Inuaysha, Shippo, and I will leave in the morning. Sango, Miroku could you please stay here and watch the village?"
Sango looked disappointed at having to stay behind but she smiled, "Yeah we will stay here Kagome, but this time if you try to leave without saying anything I will make sure you can't ever leave."
She smiled, "Thanks Sango. You too Miroku."
Miroku returned her smile then his brows furrowed and he looked at Inuyasha, "What about Kaido?"
Kagome's eyes got wide, "Who?"
Inuyasha replied, "Kaido is Sesshoumaru's kid. He stops by every once in a while, but he said something about a dinner or banquet last time he was here." He shrugged, "Just let him know what is going on. I'm sure he'd be very interested when he finds out that Kagome is here."
"Huh? Why would he be interested?" She looked at Inuyasha and hoped he didn't mean what she thought he meant.
"Oh I told him all the stories about all of our adventures. I guess Sesshoumaru hasn't told him anything about his past so I did. Kaido doesn't even know who his mother is and Sesshoumaru won't tell him." He crossed his arms, "Stubborn bastard."
Kagome smiled and breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm going to head out to the hotspring. I'll be back in a little while." She grabbed her bag and headed out of the village.
On her way to the spring she looked up at the sky. The skies in the feudal era were always clearer than the anywhere else and she missed it so much. Clouds dotted the sky around the moon making the sky shine a silvery black. A slow breeze blew through the trees and loosened leaves into the air. Kagome smiled and the wind caught her hair.
Just being back where she had longed to be was lifting her spirits more than almost anything else could. Part of her believed that she could go on living like this for the rest of her life. Though it was only part of her that believed this was possible, with her whole heart she wanted nothing more than to resume life where she had left so many years ago.
After spending three years with Sango, Inuyasha, Miroku, and Shippo Kagome had believed that she had found her true home. Falling in love with him made this all the more realistic to her. Then to have to leave, to leave everyone she loved, everything she had come to want so badly to call her own she was devastated.
When she returned home she picked up her life on that side and kept moving forward, but she could never say she didn't look back. Every second of every day was spent hoping, wishing that she could return to her other life, the life she left behind, to the love she had left behind. Even in her dreams Kagome wished to return to the past.
She set her bag down by the edge of the water and looked out at the familiar spring. Nothing had changed since she left, at least not in the land. Kagome started removing her clothes and left them in a pile near her bag. With a deep breath Kagome eased into the warm water and sighed.
So many things had happened to her in this time, bad and good. Though sometimes the bad out numbered the good Kagome still wouldn't trade her experiences for anything. She treasured each memory and was thankful that she was given the chance to meet everyone and go on such an adventure. Kagome sat back against the bank and closed her eyes.
After going back to her time she had finished school and got a job. She never talked to her old friends and Hojo had given up any chance of a relationship with her. It seems one of her old friends had told him about Inuyasha so Hojo gave up on her. Kagome was working for a book shop after school until something happened.
~^~Flashback~^~
The owner of the store had come in for the first time one day and she was at the register. He had approached her and she knew something was wrong, she felt his youki grow as he got closer. Kagome tried to hide her lack of comfort and smiled, "Good afternoon sir."
"Good afternoon young lady." He looked around, "Are you the only one here?"
An alarm went off in the back of her head, "Yes I am sir. No one has come in for the past few days, so I have been locking up."
His silver eyes lit up, "Oh really? No one else is coming in?" She nodded. "I see." He sighed, "You are a miko are you not?"
"I am. And you are a youkai..." Her power level rose of it's own accord.
He smiled and held up his hands, "No need for that I mean no threat young miko. Now what is your name?"
"Kagome, Kagome Higurashi."
"If it is not too much trouble..." He paused as if in thought, "You're fired."
"What? Sir I am the only one coming in and you fire me?"
A deep laugh spilled from his lips, "Don't worry. You will still have a job, that is if you want it." She stayed silent. "Youkai have been killing my workers. Business matters if you will and I need someone to find these youkai and take care of them. Will you help me Kagome?"
"What kind of business are you in? I will not help anyone who is commiting crimes or hurting anyone else."
"I supply youkai and humans with magical objects. Mikos with enchanted things for protection, nothing I sell to anyone is for harming others. I swear on my life Kagome." He looked into her eyes, "It is because I am supplying mikos that youkai are killing the people working here and within my organization."
"Alright, but the first sign that something is not right I will deal with you."
~^~End Flashback~^~
Kagome washed the soap out of her hair and off her skin. Absently her hand stroked over her neck and a pang of guilt shot to her heart. There was a chain around her neck that Raiga had given her after a year of working for him. Cradled on her chest on the chain was a tiny lock, he said it signified her loyalty and her choice to lock her heart away.
'It wasn't hard.' She mused bitterly, 'Everything I loved was locked away with the well.' She got out of the water and wrapped a towel around herself. Her hair dripped water onto the ground as she dried her body. Once she was dressed she wrapped her hair up in the towel.
~*~
He sat in the tree over looking the spring where she had come to bathe. Nothing had changed since the day she left him. She was still the gorgeous women that had vanished so long ago. After years of yearning to see her face, to hear her voice, to get the chance to love her he would not let her get away again.
His golden eyes sparkled as she laid in the grass.
~*~
Miroku looked down at the fire thinking about Kagome's return. Across from him Sango was looking down at Kirara while she stroked the nekos fur. Shippo was in the corner asleep. Since Kagome had left Shippo bacame occustomed to sleeping by himself so he fell asleep whenever he was tired. Inuyasha had left a short time after Kagome did.
"Sango there is something I have to tell you. I asked Inuyasha and he confirmed it." Miroku looked up from the fire, his expression serious. "You are pregnant Sango."
"What?" She gasped.
"I want to make sure you stay safe that is why I agreed to stay here and watch the village. Where Inuyasha, Kagome, and Shippo are going there will be much fighting and even more danger. We don't know anything about who this youkai Kagome chases is and what his power is. I don't want to take the chance that you could be hurt or that I could lose you."
"Miroku you can't keep me from battle. I understand that you want to protect me but if this youkai is stronger than Kagome and Inuyasha can handle they will need our help." She looked at him with finalty.
His eyes reflected the fire he sat in front of, "Sango I am not capable of fighting at the level I had when we faught Naraku. The wind tunnel is gone and though I do still have my spiritual powers they are no where near what Kagome is capable of." He sighed and his eyes softened in the light, "Sango we are humans, normal humans. We can not keep fighting youkai as Inuyasha and Kagome can. Even Shippo has proven to be capable of great illusions and powerful kitsune magic at his young age. Eventually we will have to stop and realize that we are getting older and are not able to do what we once could."
"That may be so, but as long as I can I will help Kagome and Inuyasha with whatever they need. I do not want to be helpless and need to depend on others to survive."
"I am your husband, Inuyasha and Kagome are our friends and we depend on eachother as we always have to survive. That is what got us through all the hard times with Naraku. Please, all I ask of you is that you take it easy. I am not asking you to stop being who you were raised to be, just that you be more careful." Miroku smirked, "And finally after I get you to bear my children you think I am going to let you escape?"
She laughed, "Watch it monk, you may be my husband but I will still slap you."
