Chapter Four
After things were silent a few moments (save the occasional snort of stifled laughter from Sango and Miroku) Sango decided to try and spark a conversation. This just had too much entertainment potential.
“So Kagome-Chan, what's Houjou like?” She was fighting a losing battle with a grin.
Kagome exhaled, and with a defeated look on her face said simply “Imagine the polar opposite of Inuyasha here. You've got Houjou.”
“How is it that two people so different can still love the same woman?”
Inuyasha glared at the monk. Kagome just blushed and fiddled with the hem of her skirt.
“And then there's Kouga!” Shippou piped in. “Although he's kind of similar to Inuyasha.” This earned him a glare from the already perturbed Hanyou. “Not to much of a closed book though!” The Kitsune added and stuck out his tongue.
Inuyasha reached out and bopped said Kitsune on the head. With a shout, Shippou ran over to hide in Kagome's lap.
Kagome sighed. “Inuyasha…”
“Gneeh! Don't say it!”
“Osuwari.”
The hut shook.
The Hanyou swore.
The Kitsune giggled.
“Well, things seem to be back to normal despite this new development.” Miroku stated oddly calmly.
“Whaddya mean, monk?” Inuyasha growled out while pushing himself back into a sitting position.
“Well, I don't know the whole story, but if you kissed Kagome things should naturally change between the two of you.”
Inuyasha stared at Miroku for a minute, extremely red in the face, then turned to the wall.
“It was just an act! Not real or anything!” Kagome said quickly. She turned to Inuyasha. “Right? Tell them.”
“Hm? Oh, yeah. An act.” Inuyasha said gruffly.
“Upset that it wasn't real Inuyasha?”
“Looking for another bump on the head Shippou?”
Shippou jumped onto Kagome's shoulder and buried himself in her hair.
Sango turned to Miroku. “Yep, things are definitely back to normal.” She said with a smile.
Little did she know.

The group departed the village around 9 in the morning. There had been rumors from the West of a giant bear youkai that no one has been able to kill. After walking for a few hours, they discovered that the bear had either significantly weakened in time for their visit, or only `weak bastards' as Inuyasha put it had tried to defeat the bear. The real excitement happened on the walk back.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome suddenly gasped. “There's a jewel shard, maybe two heading this way! Fast. You think it's -”
She was cut off by the telltale whirlwind of a certain wolf youkai.
“Yo!”
“Kouga, piss off. I really don't want to deal with you right now.” Inuyasha growled from behind clenched teeth.
Kouga just scoffed. “I can come see my woman whenever I want.” He replied arrogantly.
Inuyasha advanced menacingly, growling all the while. “Kagome is not your woman, got it wolf?” he spat.
“Inuyasha…” Kagome hadn't seen him act like this while dealing with Kouga. Sure he was jealous and tried his best to make him leave, but he was acting like an alpha-male protecting his mate from danger. She shook her head at that thought and what it implied.
“It's not like you or anyone else has claimed her, so I'm free to, right?” Kouga smirked, obviously thinking he had won.
Kagome got annoyed at this comment. It sounded like he just thought of her as a possession instead of a person. She twitched, and walked in front of Inuyasha. “I am not your woman, ok? I am not going with you now, and I highly doubt I ever will, so just give it up already!”
Kouga looked shocked, then proud. Kagome couldn't figure this out. She was expecting him to be somewhat stricken because he'd just been rejected, but no.
“Fiery, are we? I like that.” He took a step towards Kagome, who backed up into Inuyasha's chest. She looked up at him. He was glaring at Kouga with one of the fiercest looks she'd ever seen him wear in his normal form.
“Kouga, she rejected you. Leave before things get messy.” At this he moved in front of Kagome and pulled out his Tetsusaiga to illustrate his point more clearly.
“What, you wanna challenge me for her, mutt?” Kouga questioned cockily, not intimidated in the least.
Inuyasha merely growled and raised Tetsusaiga.
Kagome watched in bewilderment. `He's prepared to kill Kouga to make sure I don't get taken…' “Inuyasha, stop!”
He turned to face her, expression softening a bit.
“Please don't fight him Inuyasha. There's no point. I'm not going to let him take me anywhere. I want to stay here.”
Kouga scoffed again. He walked towards the pair. “Nonsense, Kagome. You know I'll be better for you.”
Inuyasha growled loudly and turned back to Kouga. He held the Tetsusaiga with one hand and held the other beside him to stop Kagome from stepping forward.
Kagome completely lost her temper. “KOUGA! I am NOT coming with you! And I take back what I said earlier, there is no chance whatsoever of me ever coming with you alive! I am staying here with Inuyasha, and that is final. Nothing you can say or do can take me away from him!”
Inuyasha turned, blushing slightly. “Kagome…?”
Kagome realized what she just said, and blushed too.
Kouga did look stricken this time, but it quickly turned to anger. “If I kill him, that'll take you away from him.”
