Damn that Naraku…just what would he accomplish by using the girlin the first place? Does he intend to use her to kill InuYasha? She's only a mere half demon and a child to put. He's told me once before that he's heard of demon sprites. They're capable to do many things. They're born with powers that would have anything to do with nature. It was pretty difficult to understand what Naraku was saying…” Kagura thought. “But they're power can go only so high that it can kill them…so I see… the young girl is a half demon, so if she had awaken her true demon she would release such imaginable power like InuYasha did when his demon side was awaken when his Tetsusaiga broke.”

Kagura had been ordered to set out and spy on and to keep a close eye out for Tani. Naraku had some intentions for the young half demon seeing how her mother was a priestess. Naraku despised Kikyo and wanted to get rid of her. He accomplished at first fifty years ago but then later she was resurrected by a demon witch, but that's another story. Naraku had tried several attempts to kill Kikyo but his human heart which belonged to Onigumo would not allow it. So the option that Naraku had was to get rid of his human heart by harboring demons so that Naraku himself would become a fully fledge demon. However, Naraku had also figured that he could just take upon a priestess's spiritual powers which would increase his strength and he would be capable to kill Kikyo.

Naraku, that bastard…I wonder he's planning to do. He's probably going to take this upon himself.”

-----

Naraku had made his way through the trees as quick as a squirrel. He snickered as an evil grin formed across his lips. He looked up ahead at a village and watched the priestess walk out of the village.

“It's time…”

----

Larina had walked out in the forest admiring the lovely weather. It was bright and early in the morning, just a couple of hours after InuYasha and his friends left. Larina would always take her walk early in the morning when her daughter, Tani was asleep to pray and to meditate.

The priestess had come across a tree a large tree that provided enough shade for her to sit under. Larina concentrated as she tried to focus her spiritual energy. The wind blew through her face as it flowed through her long dark brown hair. Suddenly, she sensed a frightful vibe through her body. Something troubling was approaching. Larina remained calm. Surely she had dealt with a demon before so this was nothing new.

“There is no use of hiding, come out, I know your watching over me…” Larina announced, calmly.

There was no answer just the sound of wind blowing and the trees bristled into the breeze.

Larina slowly brought out one of her sacred sutras from the sleeve of her large kimono and casted a spell on the sutra. She was planning to subdue the demon so she could continue her meditation.

The demon moved from tree to tree.

Larina opened her eyes and turned. There was nothing there. Larina turned slowly and there it was a demon which stood infront of her that was dressed in white baboon clothing.

“Who are you? And what do you want from me?” Larina asked in a calm tone, You're different from other demons. You're not from around here are you?” Larina said, still calm.

“I've misjudged you, priestess. You're much smarter than most priestesses that I've met from before.” He said, smoothly.

Larina was not amused as she furrowed her eyebrows, “State your name and your business with me,” She demanded.

The demon brought out a sacred jewel shard. Larina gasped at the very site of it. Surely it was a jewel shard but it seemed as if it was tainted with evil.

“Have you seen this before?” He asked.

Larina threw her sacred sutra and brought out her bow and arrow. The sacred sutra had paralyzed the demon. Larina had faced her arrow in the demon's direction. The demon had dropped the jewel shard which tumbled over to Larina's feet.

“Who are you? And where did you get the sacred jewel shard?” Larina demanded as she lowered her bow and arrow to pick up the jewel. She took a closer look just as she thought. The sacred jewel had been influenced with evil and in result it too became evil.

“Wretched demon,” She said as she fired her arrow which finished off the demon.

It was quiet now… only the sound of the breeze flowing through the trees is what filled the air.

Larina seemed rather skeptical for what she had just done, “that was too easy. I figured he would be a little more difficult to kill off such a demon considering the fact that he had a jewel shard in his possession. That seemed too easy…” She said as she walked up closer to the demon's ashes. She took a closer look at it. She picked up the figured that she found in the demon's ashes. “I knew it, the demon wasn't really here. He was controlling a puppet which means he's somewhere near by. But why would he give up the sacred jewel shard so easily? Most demons would hold a tight grip around the jewel if they had it in their possession… so this means that I haven't seen the last of him.” Larina took a closer look at the sacred jewel shard. “Unless… this isn't really a-,”

And at just that moment the demon came out and slashed her from the back. Larina collapsed in pain. She couldn't believe her eyes as she saw blood coming oozing out of her right shoulder. Larina had been tricked!

“Fool, it turns out I didn't underestimate you. Foolish priestess,” he said as he walked up to her and kneeled down to her level. He snickered, “you are a lot more foolish than the priestess Kikyo. Even you couldn't tell from a real sacred jewel shard. Pitiful…I shall use your daughter for my own purpose.” He told Larina as he got up from where he was and walked away.

“W-what?” Larina sputtered as she looked up at the demon. Larina's eyes grew dark as she clenched her fist, “Y-you, you, stay away from her…” She growled.

The demon then stopped as he turned to face the angry priestess who lay there, dying. “Don't forget priestess, that this was your own fault. As a priestess yourself, you should've known that demons and humans were never meant to be. Kikyo too had to find that out, the hard way. You can't protect her forever.” He said as was just about ready to attack her.

Larina tried to get up but the pain was too unbearable as she fell back down to the grass. Her eyes then grew timid and blurry; she was losing to much blood, she was dying. “Damn…Tani!”

------

Tani had awakened by the sunray that went to her eyes. She groaned quietly as she wiped her eyes, got up from her bed and stretched. She then looked over to her left and realized that her mother wasn't next to her. Her bed was empty.

“I wonder where mother went…” Tani wondered, “she must be meditating again.”

At that moment, her pointy ears had twitched she heard someone screaming from a distance. It was faint but it sound as if someone was in trouble, someone like her mom. Tani didn't think twice, she ran out of the hut as she followed the sound of the woman's cry. Tani continued running, she ran passed a few village kids which made the village kids grow interest to where Tani was running too and decided to run after Tani.

Tani realized that running wasn't getting her anywhere as she just decided to take flight as she started to float in the air. She came out of the forest in the air and then suddenly heard the scream again. Tani didn't waste any more time as she flew to the sound of the cry. She had finally reached to the fields and decided to land. Tani turned to her left and then to her right. She couldn't see anyone. She looked again. Up ahead was someone one the ground drenched in his or her own blood while someone standing up was about ready to finish her or him off. At just that moment Tani realized that it was her mother that was the victim!

“Stop! What are you doing!? Leave her alone!” Tani yelled as she ran up to the demon preparing to do anything drastic to save her mother.

----

Larina heard a voice, it sounded more and more like her daughter, Tani. She tried to move her head to see but the injury that the demon had given was too much for her to even move her head.

The demon though, looked up to see a little demon child running to them. The demon child took a hold of a star that was she wore in her hair and threw it. This star was used a weapon for defense. The star came pretty fast to the demon's direction as the demon dodged it.

“Consider yourself lucky priestess…” The demon said as he vanished. Fortunate for the baboon dressed demon, Tani couldn't get a proper glimpse of him.

“Mother!” Tani came panting.

She gasped as she froze terrified at the sight she saw. Tani took a step closer as tears started to well up in her eyes. Tani was terrified to see her mother like this. “W-what happened to you? Who did this to you?” Tani bent down to hug her mother despite how much her mother's blood was staining her clothes.

Larina struggled to move. She turned and smiled to the sight of her daughter. “Tani you were truly a blessing from the stars itself the day you were born. Every time I see your face it reminds me of your father. Ever since your father's passing, all I have left was you.”

Tani went down to her knees confused to what her mother was saying. “W-what are you talking about? Where is all this coming from?” A glimmer shown in Tani's necklace, Tani began to stand up. Some of her mother's blood got onto Tani's clothes and her hands. “I'm going to get help-,”

“No,” Larina said gently. “Don't leave, the heavens itself can only do so much for me. I just want you to be beside me, please.” She pleaded.

Tani had started to cry as her tears started to roll down her cheeks. “Mother, you're the only person who true cares for me. You're the only one I have left! Please don't die let me get some help! I can save you! At least tried to get up…”

Larina weakly smiled, “I don't think I can, Tani,”

“Yes you can… get up.” Tani ordered, gently.

Larina just closed her eyes, breathing heavily as she reached out for Tani's hand. Larina squeezed Tani's hand as hard as she could. She was silently telling her to be strong. Tani squeezed back as she choked back her tears.

She knows that she's dying…” Tani thought, “And yet… she isn't sending me to get help…why isn't she sending for help? Mother, please why don't you let me search for help? I can still save you-,”

“Tani, I have been truly gifted; I've fallen in love and managed to have a family of my own, something that a priestess can never do. Never forget the song that I sang to you every time you fell asleep. I'll watch over you.” Larina said still holding tightly to her daughter's hand.

A few moments later, Tani could feel there was no longer a pulse in Larina's hand as Larina's smile began to fade and her eyes closing. Tears overflowed Tani's eyes as she blinked which made tears trickle down her face again.

“…oh mother…”
