Kagome had seemed to be all alone, no one was around her. It was dark where she was, she looked to her left, and then to her right. “Where am I?” She wondered to herself as she started to walk to the nothingness. “InuYasha, Miroku, Sango? …Shippo? Where are you guys? Kirara?” She continued to call out as she continued to wonder about.
At that moment Kagome felt that same pulse to what she felt before when her and her friends were talking about Tani and when Shippo was playing the ocarina to which Kagome found when Tani left with Kagura. Kagome gasped from the pulse that frightened her as she dug into her pocket and brought out the ocarina and the half moon, half sun necklace.
“This necklace…” Kagome began, studying the objects, “…it keeps pulsing for some reason,” Kagome thought as she looked at the necklace and then at the ocarina.
“…it's because they are both connected…” a heavenly voice said.
The voice had made Kagome jump as she turned quickly to see who had said that. “W-who said that? Where are you? I can't see you.” Kagome said still turning around, trying to find out who spoke.
Soon a spotlight came which lighted up the darkness a bit, a woman appeared with a lovely designed kimono. Her hair was very dark brown that it almost looked black; it nearly resembled the color of Tani's hair when she's in her human state. Her hair went down to her shoulders. She slowly turned and at that moment, Kagome recognized her and knew who she was.
Kagome's eyes widened in shock, “Priestess Larina! Tani's mother,” she gasped.
The priestess nodded, “yes, it is I,”
“You're alive? How can that be? I thought you were killed!” Kagome said still in shock.
“No, I'm merely a spirit now... I have died.” Larina began to explain.
“…I don't understand…” Kagome said as thoughts ran rapidly through her mind, wondering how she was able to speak to Lady Larina, “how are you here then…?” Kagome started.
“I have managed to contact you in your dreams, you are dreaming. You are the young woman with the strong spiritual powers,” Larina said. “I'm using every single `mounts of my spiritual powers just to contact you and this is the only way I can talk to you.”
“In my sleep?”
“Exactly,”
“So then… this is all real?”
“Oh yes, it is very real…” Larina responded, “You have something that belongs to my daughter, Tani,”
Kagome immediately knew what Larina was talking about as she brought out and presented Lady Larina the ocarina and the necklace. “InuYasha and I had found these when we went to try and find your daughter.”
“And she is now with that demon Naraku, the despicable demon that killed me?”
Kagome lowered her head, “yes, she is, I'm sorry.”
Larina's eyes began to sadden, as she looked away, “I see… so she is with him. I suppose that I should at least be thankful that she isn't alone in the world… and she has someone to take care of her…”
Kagome gave Larina a confused look. “What are you saying?”
Larina looked back at Kagome.
“Naraku is a terrible, horrible, selfish demon; Tani doesn't need someone like that to take care of her, Tani is an innocent child and a remarkable girl. Naraku is only using her because of her powers. InuYasha, along with me and my friends all care deeply for the girl which is why we're trying to get her away from Naraku.”
Larina gave out a weak smile, “that makes me believe that I can trust you,”
“Huh?”
Larina turned her body to face Kagome's. “Do you really, truly, honestly, care for Tani's sake?”
“Yes, especially InuYasha, he knows what Tani has gone through and he wants to help even though he doesn't show it.”
“I suppose he can understand… he is also that of a half demon so he knows what sort of pain Tani has gone through.”
“But, I'm not so sure Tani wants to be with us,” Kagome started, “she hates us, she doesn't trust us anymore, and Naraku had manipulated her into believing that Kikyo did it and so…” Kagome had continued to explain Larina what had happened to Kikyo and Tani and the rest of Kagome and her friends and how Naraku was using Tani to influence the Shikon Jewel to be more evil.
Larina nodded, “I see… Kagome… tell me something…”
“Hmm?”
“Are you a priestess? Your spiritual powers are even stronger of my own.”
“Well…” Kagome scratched her head, “Not exactly, it turns out that I am the reincarnate of Kikyo but… that's another story to tell,”
“I suppose, but Kagome, you did mention that my daughter had become a full demon because of her hatred towards Kikyo in believing that she had killed me. That explains why you have the necklace.”
Kagome looked at the half moon half sun necklace and then looked at Larina again. “You mean… that this necklace has something to do with Tani's demon side?”
Larina nodded. “It stops her demon side from awakening. Her father and I made it for her so that her demon half would never awaken.”
“But, how does it awaken? How does her demon side awaken?”
“It's when she's been hurt the worst way possible, physically, emotionally and mentally. When I died it had hurt her and after my death, the villagers chased her out of the village believing that she had killed me, so she had no one left to take care of her and no one left to trust other than you and your friends at the time. The anger and hurt awakens it the pain and suffering that she feels. When Naraku lied to Tani about Kikyo slaughtering me, that triggered it, so awakened her demon side. And the Shikon Jewel she had increased her strength which you already know.” Larina explained, “So that necklace that you have leaves Tani's demon side dormant. If the necklace is taken off, she will become a malevolent beast and attacks anyone in her path. She then stays in that state until the night of the full moon comes.
“So we were lucky when the night of the full moon came.”
“That's right,”
“She's just like InuYasha then, without his Tetsusaiga, hetoobecomes a malevolent beast,” Kagome thought as she shuddered to when InuYasha was in his demon state.
“But, there is more too it, the necklace alone can't hold back the demon side. Tani's demon side is far too strong.”
“So then…”
“The ocarina, the ocarina calms Tani's demon side as well as her human spirit. When I was alive, I would always play a special lullaby to put her to sleep and to ease her pain from the bullies that picked on her in the village. She would also play the ocarina to calm her demon spirit down.”
Kagome looked at both the necklace and the ocarina and then looked at Larina.
“Kagome, you are the only one I can trust, you have strong spiritual powers that can calm Tani's demon spirit when she is a full demon.”
“Me?”
“You,”
“But how can I-,”
Larina brought out her hand which caused the ocarina to come out of Kagome's hand. Kagome watched the ocarina in `aw' float and gently landed in Larina's hand.
“I shall… teach you… the song…song…song……”
Kagome realized that Larina was fading away. “Wait! Where are you going? You're supposed to teach me the song! Please come back!” She said as she started to run after her. By then she stopped running and saw the ocarina on the ground. Larina was gone. Kagome then picked up the ocarina and the looked at it and the looked into the nothingness, the darkness to where priestess Larina disappeared too.
~*~*~*~
Kagome had opened her eyes wide and lifted her head up from where she slept. She winced from the injury that Sango was bandaging up earlier, panted and looked around to see where she was. She was relieved to find out that she was in the hut that her and her friends stayed in as she watched her friends sleep. Kagome swallowed hard and then placed her hand on her forehead wondering about the dream she just had, seeing Larina.
“Was that a dream?” Kagome whispered as she continued to pant. “Was that even real?” The fifteen year old dug into her pocket and brought out the ocarina which pulsed at that moment. A sweat drop went down Kagome's head. “Okay… so it might be real… the whole dream including Larina.” She looked around the room and saw Sango, Shippo, Miroku and Kirara all sleeping but InuYasha wasn't around which made Kagome wonder. “Where is InuYasha...?” she asked herself,“Well…where ever he is, I have to find him and tell him that Tani's mother was in my dream. Tell him that there is a way to calm Tani's demon side…”
Kagome had slowly gotten up from where she was, trying her best to not wake Shippo who lay very close to her. Once she got out of her sleeping back she took one last look at her friends and then headed out of the hut into the blue night to find InuYasha.
----
InuYasha had been sitting out top at the edge of a cliff, watching the sun rise, thinking about everything that had happened. From when he first met Tani to when he last saw her fly off with Kagura along with Sango's younger brother Kohaku. He couldn't seem to get Tani out of his mind. He seemed rather worried about her. Her innocent face kept reappearing in his head. Every time he saw her face, he would see a younger version of himself, when he was a child, when he was alone. InuYasha and Tani were exactly alike. As a child they were both made fun of constantly because they were half demon and they couldn't trust anyone. InuYasha lost his mother when he was child as did Tani just recently.
InuYasha soon began to think back to when he was a child. A flashback had soon came to his mind. It was a long time ago when he was just a little boy and his mother, Izayoi was still alive. He was just a kid and he was playing with his ball. InuYasha remembered the villagers would come to tease him taunt him by calling him `half breed' and take his ball away and kick it around to each other except for InuYasha who constantly try to get his ball back. Then, one of the villagers would just kick the ball and InuYasha would begin to chase it. The villagers would walk away as InuYasha would watch them walk away once he gotten his ball back…
[Flashback…
Little InuYasha, as a young boy, continued to play with his yellow bouncy ball and overheard the villagers and the men of the castle where InuYasha and his mother lived since Izayoi was the daughter of a feudal lord, snicker `half demon' or `half breed.'
Now, at the time InuYasha was just a small child so he didn't understand what the men meant by `half breed.'
“…half breed?” InuYasha wondered to himself hearing that word for the first time.
“InuYasha,” a gentle voice had called.
InuYasha turned to see his mother, Izayoi standing there outside of the castle around the garden which she stood infront of, waiting for her son to come into her arms. In response, InuYasha turned to his mother, threw the bouncy ball her had and ran into his mothers arms. Izayoi opened out her arms to prepare the embrace that her son was about to give her as she hug her son.
While InuYasha hugged his mother, he broke away from the embrace and faced his mother, “mother…” he started. “…whats a… half breed?”
From the look in Izayoi's eyes, she was hurt; hurt from what InuYasha had asked her as tears began to well up in her eyes. It wasn't fair for InuYasha. It just wasn't. It wasn't his fault that he was born a half demon. Izayoi had felt emptiness in her heart because of InuYasha's suffering. She didn't answer InuYasha's question as she kneeled to his level and hug him with all her might.
Flashback over…]
“I never understood why my mother kept crying… I never understood why she seemed so…sad…” InuYasha thought. “…she was… crying… crying for me… she never thought what my life would be like…it wasn't her fault…” he told himself. “It just wasn't her fault…”
Then another terrible flashback came to his mind again. Only this time his mother had died and InuYasha was all alone in the world as a child nobody ever wanted him, nobody ever cared for him. InuYasha was being chased after demons that wanted his flesh and bones and they seemed to be gaining up on him. InuYasha continued to run for his life until his tripped over a tree stump. He quickly got up and continued running until he reached a cliff. The young half demon child thought he was going to get eaten until he thought fast and jumped over and hid under the part of the cliff where the demon's couldn't find him as they demon's gave up and left. InuYasha was lucky that time.
Then in just that instant, Tani's angry, hurt human face came into his mind again. The words to which Tani had said to InuYasha kept repeating in his head, “Trader! I trusted you! How could you do that to me? I hate you, I hateyou InuYasha!”
InuYasha simply just shook the thought as he tried to concentrate on how to defeat Naraku. He then bit his thumb and began to think very hard on what he had to do.
“…InuYasha?” Someone from behind called gently, breaking InuYasha's train of thoughts.
The half dog demon's ears twitched as he turned his head slightly to see who had called his name. It was no other than Kagome who seemed to be wide awake.
“Hey, it's you…” InuYasha said scratching his head.
Kagome sat down beside InuYasha, carefully since the injury in her arm still hurt her a little bit. “I know that you've been thinking about her…” Kagome said knowing exactly who InuYasha was on his mind.
“Not just her…”
“We're all worried about her,”
InuYasha nodded. “I know… so what are you doing up so early anyway?”
“Well, how come you're still so up?”
“…couldn't sleep…”
“I don't blame you; it's been really hard…”
“Yeah…” InuYasha replied remembering that Kagome had been injured. “How's your arm?”
“It's okay…” Kagome responded looking at her arm. She then shook her head and quickly faced InuYasha. “I've got something that you won't believe.” She started quickly changing the subject.
InuYasha faced Kagome, “yeah…? What?”
“It's about Tani,” Kagome began as she brought the ocarina. “I had a dream about her mother, priestess Larina. She spoke to me.”
InuYasha seemed confused and yet skeptical. “A dream, about Tani's mother…”
“Yeah, she told me that there was a way to save Tani,” Kagome said.
“And you believed it?”
“It is pretty hard to believe myself; she told me that it was very real at least in my dream.”
“I think maybe this whole Tani thing is getting to you.” InuYasha said scratching his temples.
“No InuYasha, you have to believe it. She told me and explained to me about Tani's necklace and this ocarina. They're both connected.”
“But she's dead.”
“Which is how she was able to contact me in my dream. She told me that I was talking to her spirit. She told me that she had used every ounce of her spiritual powers just to contact me.”
“In your sleep?”
“That's exactly what I said. But she told me that it was very real.” Kagome said watching the sun slowly rise and its light spreading over the horizon. “She,” Kagome paused as she watched the silver ocarina gleam. “She told me that there was a way to help Tani; a certain peace that can redeem Tani's heart when she is in her demon state.”
“Well… did you learn it?”
Kagome blushed, slightly and giggle nervously as looked away from InuYasha. “Not… exactly… I… kinda woke up after that…” she finally replied.
InuYasha lowered his eyes in disbelief, he was not amused. “Why am I not surprised? Trust you to screw things up when we're real close…”
“Hey, don't give me that! At least we know we still have a chance to win this.”
“Hmm... I guess… it's better than nothing.”
“So do you believe it?”
“We don't know until we try right?”
“… I guess you're right about that...”
“…yeah…”
Kagome had soon then focused her attention to the sun rising as did InuYasha. “That sure looks beautiful…” Kagome commented.
“Yup... it sure is…” InuYasha agreed.
There was soon a bit of silence for a while as both InuYasha and Kagome both watched the sun rise. They had both figured that it was sort of relaxing to watch the sun rise over the mountains after everything that had happened. Kagome almost, nearly rested her head on InuYasha's shoulder to make herself more comfortable until…
“Ow…” InuYasha said in the most irritated way. Something had just pinched his cheek. InuYasha quickly then smacked his cheek to stop the pinching and brought it his had. It was no other than Myoga the demon flea.
Kagome had looked over at InuYasha's hand to see if it was who she was thinking off-and it was.
“Myoga,” InuYasha asked looking at the flattened flea.
Myoga managed to un-flatten himself has he made himself comfortable on InuYasha's palm. He folded his tiny hands and looked up to InuYasha. “Master InuYasha…” he started. “It's been a while.”
“How where you able to find us?” Kagome asked.
“You and I just happened to cross paths I was able to sniff out InuYasha's scent.” Myoga said.
“So then, Myoga, what brings you here? You couldn't have just come here for a little visit.” InuYasha said.
“Actually, I came here to find out things from you to see if any of the rumors linked to you, master InuYasha.”
