InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Hauntings ❯ The Cave In ( Chapter 19 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

For pleasures past I do not grieve,
nor perils gathering near;
My greatest grief is that I leave
nothing that claims atear.

-Lord Byron

Miroku sat back, studying the board and his possible moves. Sango had quite the strategy, obvious but impenetrable. How had she gotten so many of her pieces so close to his king? He was in quite a pickle. He just hoped Sango didn't want him to do anything embarrassing when she won.

Smearing cream cheese on a Ritz cracker he contemplated his knights.

Kouga struggled up. His head hurt like hell, and Inuyasha didn't look like he was calming down anytime soon. He stared down at the unconscious Ayame beside him, gathering her in his arms he stumbled over to the door, dodging the hurtling objects Inuyasha inadvertently flung at them. He was completely lost in his mind, lost in the pain and torment of his past.

Kouga had just a small glimpse of what had happened, but his head hurt so much, he couldn't remember what it was, but it kept at him, eating it way through his subconscious. Something…someone was there with Inuyasha when he killed himself…

Urasue watched over Goghinki's shoulder as he peered into the crystal ball. Tsubaki had been useless in killing the girl. She had always known the witch's obsession over beauty would be her destruction; still she was a little suspicious about the sudden snapping of the restraints.

She had felt the reaper's presence when he entered the building but had ignored him. He and the two spirits with him had no business here; she had taken these ghosts and had given them bodies to inhabit. By universal law the reapers had no claim to their souls any longer.

Than, why had he interfered? Indirectly he had taken one of her souls from her…how?

Kagome had to struggle to reach the door; the air became heavier, like a clear fog only thicker, smothering her. She drug in deep, ragged breaths as she reached out for the huge iron doors. Yanking them open with all the force she could exude.

A man stood before her, the one she had seen earlier, the one who had been with Inuyasha. He turned to stare at her, holding a young red-haired woman in his arms.

Kouga spun around to face her, clutching Ayame to him as he stared at the living girl before him. Before he could shout to her to get out she flew past him, not even acknowledging the deadly weapons that flew from the walls directly toward her. She just ran, straight for Inuyasha, as though she knew him.

Wait…that girl! She was the living girl Inuyasha had been with! How had she gotten here?

Kagome knew the danger she was in, but she didn't care. Even if she was struck down by the weapons here, before she reached Inuyasha, it didn't matter. It really didn't. She didn't want Inuyasha to be alone. Didn't want him to continue on the emptiness that was death. She wanted him with her, wanted to be with him for all eternity.

She felt the thick clear fog push down on her again, forcing her towards the grown. She was going to collapse! So tired, no! She had to reach him! She had to!

She lunged for him, grasping onto his robe just as the final wave of fatigue hit her. Fighting away the darkness in her vision she clutched at him. Her mind sending out little alarms about how she shouldn't be able to hold onto him, but she pushed them aside. She belonged here. Next to him...forever.

“I love you Inuyasha.” She whispered to him just as the spears pierced through her. But she didn't feel the pain, didn't feel anything. She lay unconscious, dieing against Inuyasha. She didn't notice the agonized cry of her love or the uncontrollable rumbling resounding throughout the underground chambers. Didn't feel the hot tears drip down onto her face or the strong arms wrapping around her as she released her hold on him.

Kouga watched as the Inuyasha embraced the dieing girl, real liquid tears flowing down his artificial face. He tightened his hold on Ayame, knowing that the soon the death that they had been waiting for would finally come. Gazing over his shoulder he studied the woman and child behind him, hold onto each other as another shudder wracked the underground chambers.

Kagome didn't notice. Everything was darkness to her. She didn't even feel the crush of rubble as the library caved in on top of them all.

Kagura held strong to Rin, crying as she watched the roof crumble around them. Shippo yipped at them but she knew there was no escape. She held Rin closer and said a small prayer to the goddess, thanking her for allowing her to meet such a wonderful child and enjoy the time she spent with her. She only hoped they would meet again in their next life.

The only thought she had when the champers filled with rubble was how sad Soten would be without them. How frightened she would be when she woke up and didn't see them there. How lonely the child would be without Rin and Shippo to play with.

“I hope she lives happily.” Kagura whispered. For some reason she thought there would be a crushing weight smashing her to death, but no, the impact of the rubble killed her and Rin instantly. She found herself feeling happy that Rin didn't have to feel any pain, than the dark emptiness of death set in, and she gave herself over to the shock of it.

Urasue leaned back, unable to deny any longer that things truly had spun out of her control. She never should have started this. But when she had seen him there, standing by the tree crying, she couldn't resist. His hatred and pain would have made him such a powerful weapon, but he couldn't exact his revenge. His lover had died that same night, leaving him with no one to hate but himself.

She wanted to remind him! To show him what they all did to him, how the world had treated him. And it worked, but now he was bringing the whole library down, all because of that damn woman. All because he fell in love again.

Life and death aren't supposed to mix. You could not love the dead. It was impossible. Yet he had done it.

He truly would have been a powerful spirit. The perfect weapon…

Goshinki held out a goblet of red wine. She took a deep drink and he did the same. Leaning back she let out a sigh as the poison drifted through her. She wasn't going to sit around waiting for judgment. Might as well go straight to hell.

Its actually very amazing for me, this is the first story I've ever finished, and I had this wonderful happy ending planned out but than things happened and it ended up not so happy. Still, my very first reviewer said she didn't like sad endings so there will be a nice epilogue.

Can you tell I'm nervous? Mother night I've always hated this fic, from the very beginning I've just used it as a way to get through my blocks for Chemical Reaction. Than it got popular and became my priority, because people loved it, though I hated the thought of taking someone else's idea and working it into a story. The only time I truly loved this story was the imagination I had to put into it, and Helium. Yes, Helium was a big plus. So now I've finished this and can move on to others. But I think I will miss this. Even though I hated it, I loved it just as much.

Well, enough of my maniacal ramblings, how's about I work on that epilogue? Yeah? Okay.
