Chapter 10: The Heart of You

Sango made a slight cooing noise as she awoke to the sound of rustling in the trees. ~Inuyasha? ~ she wondered, sleepily.

“Shall we?” his voice surprised her, making her jump.

“Miroku…”

“Do you not wish to pursue Inuyasha? It might be Kagome that he has caught scent of...” Hearing the name of her friend, Sango jumped up, fully awake. “I'll take that as a yes.”

--------

He was shocked. He didn't know how to react. Sensing another presence, Kagome had quickly turned around, and, seeing him, pushed away the man she had been holding on to. Inuyasha's eyes widened slightly, a noticeable shade of scarlet swirling within their golden depths. His pupils shrunk until they created blue lines that interrupted the pools of scarlet. His fangs and fingernails grew to at least twice their normal length and sharpness.

Enraged, the half demon lunged at his brother, missing his throat by a mere inch. Kagome managed to fall backwards in time to barely dodge the blow as well. It seemed that Inuyasha had not transformed, but was so maddened that all he could see, hear, smell was the demon lord of which his anger was centered on. He took countless wild swings, creating numerous openings in his defense. Sesshomaru had no trouble at all with taking advantage of that.

“You must learn to control your anger, dear brother,” he snarled, tossing him aside with a kick.

“AN' YOU GOTTA LEARN TO KEEP YOUR DIRTY MITTS TO YOUR OWN DAMN SELF!”

“Mind your language, half breed. It was the woman who kissed me.” He said, keeping a calm, composed face.

Inuyasha could tell he was taunting him. “LIKE SHE'D WANT TO TOUCH YOU!!” Inuyasha snarled, taking another whack at his sibling.

“Inuyasha!” a young woman's voice interrupted the fight, but he could tell it wasn't Kagome.

“Kagome!” It was their two companions, the demon slayer and the monk.

Using this distraction as an assistance to take down his brother, Sesshomaru had out his sword, Tokijin, in a second.

Kagome was frozen to the spot. She could hear the chilling sound of a blade cutting through the cold, evening air. Her eyes widened in realization. She whipped around as a horrifying feeling crept into her pulsing heart. “NOO!!” she screamed in a shrill, terrified voice. “NOO!!”

~~~~~~~~
“Inuyasha…” pain ripped at her side.
“KAGOME!” his voice sounded strained.
“Inuyasha…” she sighed, relieved he was okay. She then realized what she had done. When the sword was flung at his heart, she jumped in front of it to save him. “Inuyasha…I'm so glad you're okay...I'm so glad you're…”
~~~~~~~~

“Kagome…” the raspy voice split through her dream.

She woke with a start. “Inuyasha? INUYASHA!” she looked over at him, seeing his bloodstained clothes. “But…why? WHY? I THOUGHT…”

A thick, red liquid spilled, droplets flying through the air, and a puddle forming at the ground. She raced over to the limp figure, propped up against a tree, stumbling as her head throbbed. “NOO!! NOO!!” she cried, with the intensity of a mother calling to her dying child. “My god…no…please, no!!” Her breathing came in short gasps. She could feel a part of her soul being torn away.

“Y…you jumped in front of me…I couldn't just let you die like that so I pushed you out of the way…and when you fell…you hit your head- kakk kakk!” Blood trickled down the side of his mouth as he began to cough uncontrollably.

“INUYASHA!! DON'T LEAVE ME…DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE ME!!”

Putting a hand to his chest, she breathed a pain-filled moan, sinking her head into his shirt.

Whipping her head around, confusion broke into her face as her gaze tore through the man who remained standing. “WHY?!”

Not seeming to care, the victor of the battle turned, with a smirk, and walked away.

Her face twisted, full of sorrow. He didn't seem to care about her at all. All he had wanted…all he had EVER wanted was to get back at his brother. And, it seems, she had fallen into his trap and allowed him to do so.

“…Kagome…” He looked painfully down at her.

Her eyes widened at his voice. “…Kagome…I'm sorry…”

“What?! Don't be! I was awful, it's MY fault! Please don't blame yourself! Blame me…anything…just DON'T DIE! Don't leave me! Please! I don't care how angry I seemed…Inuyasha…I don't hate you. I don't hate you at all!”

“Kagome…I want you to…to always be happy. I'm sorry I hurt you…I wish it didn't have to happen like this.” He offered a weak smile. “…Kagome…Kagome, I need to tell you something. I know I should have told you this before…I'm sorry…I'm so sorry, Kagome…I love you…”

“INUYASHA!!” she howled. “INUYASHAA!!!”

His eyes closed. With that, Inuyasha spoke no more. Nor did he breathe, nor did he see. Nor did his heart remain in the reach of the one who loved him most….the one who he had cherished more than anything else in the world.
