The Hearts of the Lost
By kytenluvinu
She was a Miko without a past.
They were two Brothers who longed for her.
But she only had room in her heart for the child.
Or so she thought.
Disclaimer: I do not own any of Rumiko-sama’s creations. But I do own sweet, little Daiki.

The beautiful, shrine less Miko made camp by a small stream. Her raven hair radiated in the moonlight. She shuffled for a moment after tending to the fire. Gracefully kneeling and watching the flame flicker and dance, with her sad, brown eyes. She wanted to dance with them, she wanted to laugh and be with friends, or at least find a village she could call home. She traveled for about three years now. Leaving her village and the motherly comfort of the head priestess behind. She learned much from her excursions there, and was reluctant only at first to leave. Although she called that place home for the better part of two years, she felt like she was suffocating, no threats, no exhilaration. And no one to love. Not that love was a alternative for her. A pure priestess, her only mission to serve and protect. There was no time for love. Her expression was sad and longing most the time. Her only comfort were the smiles of children when she found a village that needed the assistance of a powerful Miko such as herself. She brushed at her hakama as she stood. She wasn’t startled when her shikigama stepped from the forest foliage. Two young girls, adorned in lovely, elegant kimonos. The priestess sighed and gave the girls a sad smile.
“Yes?” The young priestess asked, with a slight air of irritation. Although she did not mind the company.
“A village.” The first child muttered in a small raspy voice. The priestess thought it was best to give them names. The fist child she opted to call, Amaya. She thought the name suited the child, for she had a voice as soothing as the night rain. The second girl was called Aya, she didn’t have the personality the Miko expected, she was a different much more colorful character than her ‘sister’.
“The headsman’s daughter.” Aya continued after Amaya.
“She is in labor.” Amaya stated.
“With a hanyou.” Aya smiled.
The Miko sighed softly. Some villagers and her fellow Miko’s didn’t understand her tolerance for youkai and hanyous. Sometimes she didn’t understand it herself. Something always nagged at her heart, something that told her that not all youkai were evil. Because of that humans and youkai alike called for her services specifically. She was quite possibly as powerful as Midoriko. But when someone would compare her to the legendary Miko, she would wave their compliment away. Not that it bothered her, but she was modest. It was best her enemies underestimated her until the last possible moment, before she took their lives. She had done this for years now. And she wondered just how pure she was now. With warrior hands and the scent of blood that never seemed to leave her in peace.
The miko said nothing for awhile, she just watched the flames dance. They seemed almost happy, so free. Until the time came when they would die and return to the earth. No wonder the flames danced, they didn’t have time to dwell on the future, or the past. They only wanted to enjoy their short lives in happiness. But the Miko did dwell on the past. Not much of it. Besides all she had was her name, but no where to link it. No family, no friends, and no home. A young woman fated to wander the lands forever. She smirked only slightly. She suspected she wouldn’t ever die. She is cursed, never age, never die, never love.
“Kagome-sama.” Aya jerked the Miko from her thoughts.
“Will you be going to the village.” Amaya probed.
Kagome gave the girls a soft nod and nothing more. She extinguished the fire and followed the girls to the village.

Five years...
The inu hanyou groaned as he once again paused to wait for the Kitsune youkai.
“I thought you were a fox demon, Shippou!” The hanyou growled impatiently as he tapped a clawed foot to the ground. “Why the fuck can’t you keep up?”
Shippou, a young kitsune finally found his way into the clearing, dramatically grasping for air. Causing the hanyou’s mood to become even worse. He shook his head at the young demon. Still worthless. But older, it was clear to the hanyou that the kitsune would probably grow as tall as he. Though he did have to strap his katana on his back unless he wanted to dragged it on the ground. For five years they traveled together, searching for something they lost. One fateful day. Naraku was gone, but not without leaving behind his mark of sadism. The hanyou and young youkai had left the taijiya and her ex-monk husband to search for...her. The well was closed never to reopen again. She didn’t go home, she was swept away with one fell swoop. Because Naraku was smart enough to make a evil wish just before being sent to hell.
Now they had a solid lead and the hanyou was debating whether or not he should just leave the kitsune behind.
“Inuyasha! Will you just slow down!” Shippou demanded exasperated. “If the last forty Miko’s we found wasn’t her, what makes you think this one is any different.”
“Listen runt, do you want to find her or not!” Inuyasha’s growl was softer, but he didn’t relax.
“Of course I do you dumb dog!” Shippou retorted. “But how many times are we going to keep dodging holy arrows before we get a break!”
Inuyasha snorted, as much he hated to admit it the dumb kid had a point. They had many close calls with Mikos as they searched for only one. And as soon as her name escaped their lips, they were met with extreme prejudice and distrust. They were given one wrong turn after the other. It seemed everyone wanted to protect the Miko, Kagome.

Five years...
The Inu Taiyoukai paced his castle, growing more and more irritated with the sound of his servant’s mindless chatter. Maybe it wasn’t to mindless, he was discussing matters regarding the Taiyoukai’s western lands. And yet he found his mind on other things. Like his adopted daughter and the rogue that has captured her interest. It was to be expected, she was of age and was growing anxious. But he swore if the young solider made her shed a single tear, he would rip his throat out.
“Sesshoumaru-sama!” A chipper voice called, effectively rousing the Lord’s attention. He turned to see a lovely, and still young human woman running his way. She hadn’t changed much, taller and lean. With a innocent wisdom in her eyes, she already seemed to know so much. She had hair that made Sesshoumaru’s look like a buzz cut. It was ridiculously long and he could only imagine how long it took her servants to put it up and keep it off the ground. It was apparent she had something important to say. But Sesshoumaru would be the one to ultimately decide if it was important or not.
“What is it Rin?” Sesshoumaru said, feigning total interest.
Rin could hardly contain herself. “Kenta wants me to travel with him to a nearby village!” Rin immediately switched to little princess mode. Calling him Father when she is about to beg. “Oh please Chichi-ue can I go! I will return within the moon’s first cycle. PLEASE!!!”
Sesshoumaru scowled down upon her. Kenta, her young human suitor. The boy who left his village to become a merciless solider without a army. Sesshoumaru had not completely disliked the boy. He reminded the Taiyoukai of himself, cold-blooded, with a thirst for blood. He would join any army he came across until there was nothing left to kill. Then he would move on to the next. Why he calmed down when he met Rin was anyone’s guess. Sesshoumaru refused to allow Kenta to reside within the castle, but that didn’t stop the young man from lingering around the area. Constantly Kenta came to the gates, presenting his dear Rin with more gifts in a attempt to capture her heart. Flowers, jade, pearls. Whatever he could scavenge he would give to his intended. Sesshoumaru had hoped he would just move on, find a loose woman and forget about Rin before she became to attached. But no, it’s been almost a year and he was as relentless as ever.
Sesshoumaru softened his gaze at his daughter. He hated to disappoint but there was no possible way he would allow her to be alone with the rogue alone in the dark.
“No.” He answered flatly. Immediately he could smell the salty tears. “Rin, do not cry.” Sesshoumaru commanded. He still had no intention of letting her go, but he was curious about the village. “What is in this village you speak of.” Sesshoumaru asked.
Rin looked up and quivered her lower lip. Hope still flooded her eyes. “His Family. A messenger just informed him that his Sister is about give birth to a hanyou baby. He wants me to meet his Family.” Rin stated stiffening her lower lip.
“A hanyou.” Sesshoumaru scowled, one more useless mongrel in the world. Sesshoumaru stood and left the room, leaving Rin to pout in peace.
Resting by Sesshoumaru’s gates was Kenta. Tall, tan and handsome. He tried to keep his hair reasonably short for battle. But since being with Rin and retiring his blade, his dark brown hair fell well past his shoulders. But he always kept it tied back for good measure. He had hard blue eyes, they weren’t innocent like Rin’s they seemed cruel and full of anger, but he only softened them for Rin. He wasn’t entirely without flaws. A large scar, crawled it way from the corner of his right eye well into his armor. Which he almost never took off. Sesshoumaru concluded that the boy must be worth something, if he could survive a wound like that and still have his sight. The boy was strapping indeed, strong, muscular. He could very easily wrap his strong arms around Rin and protect her from all danger. But Sesshoumaru still had his doubts.
Kenta immediately lowered his head in respect when Sesshoumaru sat besides him, just outside the gate to the courtyard. They were silent for it seemed an eternity.
“You will be the uncle of an hanyou.” Sesshoumaru finally began, it wasn’t a question.
Kenta grunted just loud enough for only them to hear. “That foolish Sister of mine!” Kenta growled low.
“Are you not please for her?” Sesshoumaru’s tone was bored, although he was taken back for a moment at Kenta’s reaction.
“Hell no. It is not the way it was intended, for Humans and Youkai to procreate.” Kenta shook his head in disgust.
Sesshoumaru suppressed a small chuckle. No, he hadn’t completely disliked to boy, and felt more and more that he would be good for Rin. She required someone strong and brave to care for her. And although Sesshoumaru knew he would always protect her, her still couldn’t give her everything she needed.
“Then why are you going to see her?” Sesshoumaru asked after a long silence.
Kenta clenched his jaw, he wasn’t sure if he should tell the truth. But he knew Sesshoumaru could smell a lie. “I want to be certain the child does not live.” Kenta confessed.
Sesshoumaru shifted his eyes to the young brute. He seemed anxious to leave at that point.Sesshoumaru thought about Rin, he thought that if the boy lost his temper, what would he do to Rin.
“What are your intentions?” Sesshoumaru said.
“To kil-,” Kenta began.
“What are your intentions with Rin.” Sesshoumaru interrupted almost angrily.
Kenta sighed and lifted his head to watch the clouds. He wondered when this moment would come. He was not allowed within the gates and Sesshoumaru never came out to greet him. Kenta thought this was as good a time as any. He awkwardly stood and faced Sesshoumaru. At first Sesshoumaru furrowed his brow, puzzled. He realized what was happening when Kenta bowed before him.
“Lord Sesshoumaru of the western lands.” Kenta addressed Sesshoumaru with his head still bowed and his heart in his throat. “I Li Kenta, a humble solider wish to have your daughter’s hand in marriage.” Kenta swallowed hard. His head still down he knew he left his self open for attack. Sesshoumaru could easily chop his head off and leave him rot. Kenta’s stomach clenched when he heard Sesshoumaru shift and stand. He still couldn’t lift his head until Sesshoumaru addressed him.
“You will come inside, you both will need your rest before you take your journey.” Sesshoumaru finally said before he entered the gate. He could hear Kenta’s soft sigh of relief. He inwardly groaned at the thought of Rin squeals of happiness. He almost regretted the fact that he accepted the proposal.
Screams of joy were heard through out the castle. Servants wondered if Sesshoumaru was killing Rin. But laughter followed. Rin and Kenta would be married and would visit his village. But Sesshoumaru would not just sit and wait. He would put Jaken in charge of the castle affairs and follow the young couple secretly.

Kagome sat before the headsman of the village. His daughter who was called Mayu had slept. Her child was indeed due, and Kagome gave her some herbs to help her relax. The headsman, Takahiro seemed nervous in the presence of Kagome. She didn’t enjoy being feared.
“What seems to be the problem Takahiro-san.” Kagome asked. “I really must get back to Mayu-chan.”
Takahiro shifted his gaze and appeared to be choking back tears. He fell forward and bowed before Kagome. She didn’t flinch, but she was concerned.
“Please Miko-sama, we desperately need your help!” Takahiro cried. Kagome placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
“It’s alright,” she said, her voice soft and friendly. “I will assist you in anyway I can.”
“It’s my son, Kenta.” Takahiro began as he sat himself back, his head still lowered. “I am certain he received word of his Sister’s pregnancy. It was her loyal servant.” Takahiro gritted his teeth. “No one else knows that my daughter was impregnated by a youkai. If it is found out that the child is hanyou, it will be killed by Kenta and our Family would be exiled.”
Kagome bowed her head in sympathy. “And how can I help you?”
“Could you take the child away from here, I know that you are the only Miko who cares for humans and youkai alike.” Takahiro pleaded. “The child would be safe with you.”
Kagome sighed and shook her head. “No, I can not.” Kagome said sadly.
Takahiro felt tears well in his eyes. “But why Miko-sama?”
“I am a Miko without a village. I am targeted by Humans and youkai.” Kagome explained. “I can not have child that would slow me down or distract me, and the fact that it is hanyou would only make matters worse. I am sorry.” Kagome stood and left the headsman to his tears.
The birth was a difficult one. Kagome would not allow anyone inside that hut with her and the Mother. Kagome was gentle and kind. She did not blush at the expletives that flowed from Mayu’s mouth. She was used to it after five years of delivering children.
Kagome’s voice was able to sooth Mayu to some degree. Through the flow of tears she could see Kagome’s sweet smile as she delivered her child. Kagome was pure and angelic, Mayu had hoped she said yes to her Father’s request.
Another stab of pain flung her from her thoughts. She thought she heard Kagome’s voice tell her to push, but she wasn’t sure. She pushed anyway. The pain was excruciating Mayu wasn’t sure when she heard the cries of the child, but it was a blessing when she did.
Kagome immediately knew what the child was, inu hanyou. He had lovely silver hair and tiny ears that would poke up in about a week. His eyes remained close, but she was sure they would be golden. He didn’t look to much like his Mother so Kagome concluded that he must look just like his Father. His claws weren’t as sharp as they would be when he gets older, which was probably a good thing. Kagome didn’t want him to scratch himself or his Mother. Immediately Kagome began cleaning the child and chanting a blessing for both Mother and child. She put him in his Mother’s waiting arms.
Kagome wasn’t sure but Mayu almost seemed reluctant to take her Son. Kagome quickly brushed it aside to leave and announce the birth. She was halted by Mayu’s voice calling out to her.
“Miko-sama?” Mayu voice was soft as if choking back tears. Kagome stopped but didn’t turn around at first. “Have you spoken to my Father?” Kagome sensed the hurt in her voice. Mayu knew if Kagome agreed, she may never see her son again. But at least he would be alive.
Kagome sighed and turned to sit besides Mayu, who cradled her son close. “Yes we spoke.” Mayu was silent but gave an expression for Kagome to continue. “I’m sorry but I can not take the child.” Kagome saw Mayu’s entire world shatter, and Kagome felt a slight twinge of hurt in her heart. Kagome felt it was only right to explain. “I know your situation, but the child would slow me down. I would protect him with my life, and that could possibly be our downfall. I have concealment spells. Though sometimes they are only temporary it will give you a chance.” Kagome was ready to get up and leave again, when Mayu caught her arm.
“Miko-sama, please. He will not be able to grow happily with me.” Mayu could no longer suppress her tears. “He will be weak, my Brother will come and kill him before he even has a chance. At least with someone to teach him and love him...maybe...maybe I’ll see him again.” Mayu gazed lovingly at the sleeping baby. “But if he dies, that would not be possible.” Kagome looked down on the two. The ultimate sacrifice, giving up your child to a stranger. If there is the smallest possibility he would live. Kagome shook her head in defeat.
“Have you named him?” Kagome asked. Mayu was startled as if forgetting she wasn’t alone.
“I haven’t.” Mayu said through tears.
“That’s probably best,” Kagome smiled sadly. “No one is to know the nature of the child, he has died at birth. Do you understand?” Kagome saw the hurt wash over the Mother’s features. She nodded without speaking. “You will have a moment with him. I will let no one in. Then we will leave.” Kagome knew what she was doing was wrong, carrying the baby with her. But she wanted to help and she wouldn’t mind the company. “I will go to my quarters and prepare a concealment spell. Do you have a whelping goat?” Mayu nodded once again. “Good I will take it with me. He will be on solid foods within the first couple of months, being a inu.” Kagome got up and prepared to leave. Once again she was stopped by Mayu small voice.
“Miko-sama? Thank you.” Mayu whimpered, before adding. “Will I ever see him again?” Kagome turned and gave her a sweet and reassuring smile, she nodded and left the hut.
A group of villagers were huddled around the hut and Aya and Amaya was keeping them back. The headsman looked up at Kagome anxiously when she left the tent. Kagome gently shook her head.
“The Mother will be left to mourn.” Kagome sighed. She could hear the whispers and shocked gasps. The headsmen only stared at the Miko who only slightly curled her lips. Only visible to those who was looking for a sign. When Takahiro saw it, he gave a small relieved sigh.
When the villagers finally disappeared within their huts. Kagome slipped back into Mayu’s hut. She already had a concealment charm to tie around the babies arm. Mayu was asleep with her back to her baby. Kagome wanted to cry for her, and comfort her. Quietly Kagome lifted the baby hanyou in her arms careful not to stir him. Before leaving she turned back to the resting Mayu.
“His name is Daiki.” Kagome softly murmured. “Remember his name is your dreams.” With that Kagome left for the woods with Aya and Amaya leading the small goat.
Daiki ~ Great value
Kenta ~ Healty, strong
Well there it is the first chapter, interested yet? I hope so. My other fan fiction will be over very soon. I have a sequel prepared but it will not be revealed for a while. I came up with this story while reading a couple of wonderful Sesshoumaru and Kagome pairings by Resmiranda. But I also want to see Kagome and Inuyasha together. So you won’t know what will happen until I’m ready to reveal that. Will she end up with the love of her life or will she end up with a new love. Stay Tuned!!! All reviews are welcome good or bad!!!
