Kagome watched as the handsome leader of the pig youkai advanced towards her with a charming smile.

“You have come to help us, I understand.” The taiyoukai known as Akira said in a smooth tone. “Or have you come to help the humans instead?”

Kagome held her head high, she wasn’t afraid. “I have to come to offer my assistance in any way to solve the matter for all involved.” Kagome bowed as she spoke. When she looked up he saw that Akira was frowning.

“Come with me.” Akira turned and spoke to the youkai that brought her to the oasis. “Send for my wife shortly, but first I must speak with the miko alone.” He glanced over his shoulder and motioned for Kagome to follow. Kagome did as she was told and was led through dense foliage that seemed to lead no where, that is until Akira pulled back a curtain of vines. Kagome gasped at the sight. Human and youkai women were scattered everywhere, each of them in their own happy world, some the women were chatting amongst themselves as others were tending to babies and doing chores. Kagome noticed that the human females seemed happy and not at all distressed. As Akira led her to the head house, Kagome noticed some of the humans and youkai chattering dying down to hushed whispers. Kagome paused when a young human woman handed a youkai, about her age a baby boy. She asked the youkai to watch her child so she could prepare dinner. Kagome noticed the sadness in the youkai eyes as she agreed. Kagome kneeled next to the youkai and smiled.

“Hello,” Kagome smiled gently. “He is hanyou?”

The young youkai looked up and smiled sadly. “Yeah, he’s beautiful. I’m glad I can be apart of his life, even if he isn’t my own.”

Kagome placed a hand on the girl’s shoulder and tickled the newborn’s chin with her other free hand. “Don’t worry, I’m sure things will look up soon.”

Akira cleared his throat impatiently. Kagome gave the female’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze and got up to follow the lord.

“The human women seem at peace here. But the youkai women seem sad.” Kagome pointed as Akira slid the door to his home open. Kagome stepped in and he closed the door behind them.

“Our own females cannot bear us children, they feel worthless to their males.” Akira said. “But they are not worthless and their mates still love them.”

“And the humans?” Kagome asked keeping her tone light.

Akira smirked. “When we first learned of the humans hiring a monk to wipe us out, my clan was enraged. They looked to me to make a decision. My clan wanted to kill the females of Osamu’s clan, but I knew that blood shed would not solve our problem.” Akira offered Kagome a drink which Kagome politely declined. He sat the jug down next to him and gave Kagome a sinister grin. “We brought the women here by force, mated with them by force and was prepared to kill them when they gave birth.”

Kagome was taken back by Akira’s honest proclamation. He laughed at the angry glare she gave him.

“Well obviously we didn’t kill them. And they are happy here, and we are happy to have such wonderful women here with us. We have never uttered an unkind word or struck them. We have not tricked them into staying with us, after some of the children were born we even gave them a choice to stay here or return to their humans.” Akira’s smile softened. “They made the decision to stay here with us. And the men of our clan fell in love with them as did the females of the clan. We all care deeply for them and they care for us.”

Kagome’s expression wasn’t of anger it was compassion. She thought of Takumi and his hatred for the youkai taking away his mother and sister. ‘What will I tell him if his family doesn’t want to come back?’ She thought to herself.

“Lord Akira, there is a young boy named Takumi who lost his mother and sister to your clan I don’t know if you can help me find them.” Kagome asked.

Akira furrowed his brow, then his eyes widened. “Takumi, he is the brother of my Emi.”

“You are paired with a human also?” Kagome twitched the corner of her lip.
Akira looked away. “What are your intentions Miko? How will you solve this for all involved?” Akira’s voice was harsh, but Kagome detected a hint of sadness.

“The Osamu clan doesn’t know about this place do they?” Kagome asked. She realized that Akira thought she was there for the humans alone. She also remembered that Osamu told here that they stormed a castle once. But there were no castles only modest homes, Akira was protecting his clan and the humans were apart of his clan.

Akira looked up. “We took a abandoned fortress and station my soldiers there. The humans assumed the women were there.”

“I will not tell Osamu about this place, but you must give me a chance to help them and you.” Kagome shifted when she heard footsteps behind her but she continued talking. “I will reverse the effects of the monk’s poisoning and give the women a chance to return to the men. Is that fair?”

Akira’s smile widened. “You would help both humans and youkai? You are amazing.”

“Hey, I thought I was amazing.” A fresh, young, happy voice called out playfully. In stepped in a average looking girl but Akira looked at her like she was the most beautiful goddess in existence. She wore a kimono of a noble woman and it was clear she was of this clan. She held her head high and gave of a radiant smile. Her hair was mid length and light like Takumi’s. Her heart shaped face also reminded Kagome of Takumi and her bright happy eyes did also. She smiled and sat next to Akira. She looked very happy and very much in love. Kagome could also see the bump in her belly she was trying and failing to cover up.

“Emi, this is...” Akira paused when he realized he didn’t know the miko’s name.

Kagome smiled and interjected. “My name is Kagome. I am a traveling miko and came across Takumi and his village. I am here to resolve the matter.” Kagome watched as Emi’s expression went from Happiness, sadness then to fear.

“You came to take us away!” Emi latched on to Akira’s arm in fear of Kagome.

Kagome was shocked to say the least, but she remained calm and cool. “No I didn’t. But I have come to help the youkai women and human men of Osamu’s village.

Emi lessened her grip of Akira by a fraction but still kept a suspicious eye on the miko sitting across from them. “Takumi, how is my baby brother?”

“He is worried about you, he wants to see you and your mother. He has tried to help also. He even went as far to seek out the monk that caused this, so he could be with you again.” Kagome explained.

Emi looked at Akira with pained eyes. Akira sighed and smiled softly. “He will betray us, I cannot allow him to find this place.” Emi looked away and wiped a tear that fell down her cheek. Akira looked over to Kagome. “Miko, if we can reach a agreement I will allow Emi’s brother to come and join my clan but he can never return to the humans. If we can agree to the terms I will give my word that we will never again attack the village if the humans agree to leave us in peace also.”

Kagome took a deep breath. “That is very fair, what do you propose?”

Kagome met Takumi outside the village walls. It was getting late and he looked drained, he also looked disheveled and bruised. Kagome knelt next to the sitting boy.

“You were punished, for bringing me here. Weren’t you?” Kagome made herself comfortable as she watched the sun go down.

“Lord Osamu wants to kill all the youkai. And we wants to do it his way.” Takumi wiped his running nose. “I don’t care if the youkai lives so close to us, they don’t harm us. I just want to be with my family again. I went to see the monk again, but he died a few days ago”

Kagome placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled. “I have an idea.”

It didn’t take Sayuri long to track her beloved miko down. Kagome was standing outside a cave with a torch in her hand. Sayuri had brought back everything on Kagome’s list. Kagome was very proud of the young bird and Sayuri was happy to help Kagome. The bird knew what her purpose was and being Kagome’s retainer was it. Kagome patted the little bird’s head and headed into the cave with Sayuri perched on her shoulder. Kagome walked through the cave and into the oasis. Sayuri thought the place was lovely and voiced her opinions.

Kagome smiled. “Takumi thought the same thing.”

Sayuri looked over to Kagome. “The boy who asked for help? He is here with the youkai?”

“He is now.” Kagome smile grew brighter as she passed the vines and stepped into the youkai village. The village was quiet and the only light was those that shone through the windows of the homes. Kagome saw a little pig youkai lighting lamps around the village, Kagome was pleased that there was a little more light to guide her to Akira’s home.

“Kagome-sama, there is something I must tell you.” Sayuri began.

Kagome was looking at the packed supplies and clothing outside some of the huts. So far Akira was keeping his word and Kagome saw no reason why he wouldn’t. “What is it, Sayuri?” Kagome heard the nervousness in Sayuri’s voice.

“Well when I returned to Natsumi-sama and told her what was happening, she gave me a little something extra. She said you might need it.” Sayuri took one of her feathers and Kagome took it in her hands. The feather changed into a small parcel and Kagome stopped walking.

“What is this for?” Kagome asked as she opened the parcel and studied the powder inside.

“Natsumi-sama and heard of spells such as the one the monk placed. She told me there could be a booby trap to prevent anyone from reversing the spell. Natsumi-sama said that you were strong and wise and would know how to use it when the time came.” Sayuri explained.

Kagome chuckled and kept walking. “That Natsumi-dono, she is always testing me. Keeping me on my toes I suppose.”

Morning came and Kagome was exhausted. She was up all night mixing and purifying herbs in the room Akira let her reside in. Little Takumi was the first to knock on the miko’s door. Last night he agreed to live with his sister and mother in the village, he was happy to become a solider under Akira. The boy was dressed in Noble attire and was recognized as part of the head family. Kagome knew he didn’t hate the youkai, he was just a kid that missed his family.

“Kagome-sama?” Takumi smiled. “Your up already?”

“I never slept.” Kagome smiled sleepily. “I see your up also.”

“Yes, Akira-sama said if I wanted to be a solider I would have to train like one. That means up at dawn.” Takumi stood proud but Kagome could tell he was tired also.

“Is Akira-sama awake now.” Kagome shifted slightly, remembering that Sayuri was asleep in her lap, she stopped. Carefully she lifted the bird and placed her on the pillow she never used.

“Yes he is waiting for you along with what you asked for.” Takumi shuddered when he thought of all the blood that was in the other room.

Kagome sighed. “How is the woman?”

“She is recovering, it was her choice. She didn’t want to have more children anyway.” Takumi sighed.

Kagome took the basket with the mixture and followed Takumi out the room to find Akira. Akira was standing by the village river with the youkai females as Kagome requested. Some of them looked human while some looked pig like, but they were all the same inside and they were all loved. Kagome was happy to help everyone. Akira stepped forward and handed Kagome a bloody package.

“This is from the most fertile female as you requested.” Kagome took out the bloody organ and placed it in the basket. Kagome placed her hands over the mixture and closed her eyes. Akira and the others watched as the mixture began to glow and bubble. Kagome picked up the concoction when she was satisfied with the results. She stepped past Akira and poured the mixture into the river as she said a silent prayer. The river began to glow and bubble and Kagome furrowed her brow. Suddenly the ground began the shake and a whirlpool appeared from the water. Kagome watched as she reached for her bow as a beast made of water appeared and attacked the miko. Kagome jumped back as the water monster shot into the ground causing crater sized damage.

‘The booby trap!’ Kagoe thought as she dodged another attack and shot a purifying arrow. The arrow hit the mark and split the beast apart but it instantly pulled itself back together. Kagome growled to herself and her eyes widened as Akira called out his soldiers to attack the monster. Kagome dodged attack after attack as Akira’s men swiped at the water to no avail. The beast turned and engulfed some of the men in water. Kagome and the others watched as the men struggled to get free but they seemed to be held back. Kagome grew angry as she watched powerless as the men drowned. Akira was about to attack in a blind rage until Kagome called out to him.

“Akira stop!” Kagome yelled as she took another arrow from her quiver. Akira did as he was told and turned to his females. Everyone find cover, trust the miko!.” Akira and his remaining soldiers pushed the women away. Akira turned back to be with Kagome. “Kagome!” He screamed as Kagome charged toward the beast. The water lunged at the miko but she was fast. Kagome realized she wasn’t fast enough when the beast slashed her shoulder. Kagome cried out in pain but succeeded in slashing at the water with the tip of her arrow.

“Kagome, direct attacks won’t work!” Akira called out.

Kagome turned and ran behind a tree. “Trust me!” Kagome called from behind the tree. She reached into her sleeve and pulled out the powder Sayuri had given to her. Frantically she dipped the wet end of the arrow into the powder and jumped from behind the tree to face the beast. She gasped when she saw Akira trapped inside the beast struggling for air. Kagome aimed her arrow for it monster and was about to shoot. The beast took another swipe at her and caused her to drop he arrow. Kagome cursed under her breath and saw that Akira was losing his fight for oxygen. Kagome scrambled to her feet and tried to reach her arrow but the beast kept attacking, Kagome gasped when she saw Takumi ran and picked up the arrow. Takumi called out to Kagome and tossed her the arrow. Just as the beast tried to take a shot at both Kagome and Takumi, Kagome jumped back and shot her arrow but not before being impaled in the shoulder. Kagome struggled to keep her eyes open as the monster screeched and dissolved into the air. Kagome smiled as Takumi scrambled away unscathed and as Akira fell to the ground and caught his breath.

Akira rushed to Kagome’s side and pulled her into his arms. “Kagome! Are you alright!”

Kagome struggled to smile. “Have your women drink from the river, then they will be healed.” Kagome managed to say before losing consciousness.

When Kagome woke up she was in the room she spent the night in. Sayuri was asleep on her chest, Kagome looked around and saw that Takumi was asleep against the wall next to her. Kagome reached over and placed a hand on his knee. Takumi opened his eyes slowly and looked down on the miko. After he fully realized she was awake he shot up and moved closer to the injured miko.

“Kagome-sama, are you alright!” Takumi exclaimed.

Kagome took a deep breath and felt the her shoulder was bandaged. She was topless and she took Sayuri off her chest and sat up. Takumi blushed and turned away. He reached for Kagome cleaned shinto kimono and handed it to her without looking at her. Kagome smiled and took the clothing. She got dressed and nudged the little bird awake.

“Your awake, Kagome-sama! I’m so glad.” Sayuri chirped as she took her place atop Kagome shoulder.

“Yes, we are leaving.” Kagome said.

Takumi whipped his body around in shock. “What! Why are you leaving Kagome-sama?” Takumi asked frantically.

Kagome smiled. “I must go, there are other villages out there that need me. My job is done here. I will take women that chose the humans back to they’re village and head on my way.”

Takumi lowered his head and held back his tears. Kagome lifted his head with her hands and kissed his forehead. “Thank you for all your help Takumi.” Takumi blushed and turned away.

“I’m a solider, I just did my duty.” Takumi said in his most manly voice. Kagome giggled a she watched Takumi leave the room.

“I hope we meet again.” Kagome sighed as she began to gather her things.

Kagome and half the human females from the village stood at the entrance of the cave. Akira and his new family met them at the entrance. Kagome bowed to Akira and he gave another charming smile before returning the bow.

“You risked your life for us and yet you won’t let me repay you.” Akira said as he placed his arm around Emi. “If you are ever in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to seek out my clan.”

Kagome bowed again. “Thank you, and take care of yourselves.” Kagome walked away with the women. She turned and waved once again before heading to the village. The gruff leader of the Osamu clan immediately softened when he saw Kagome with the women of his small village, the miko had kept her word and brought back a little more than half of the women. It was their choice to return. Osamu was ecstatic to see that his wife was one of the women in the group. A hundred times he thanked Kagome and offered her payment, but Kagome refused.

“The only payment I ask for is your promise for peace.” Kagome said.

“Yes, there will be peace. Thank you Kagome-sama, for all you have done. If we could assist you in anyway please ask.” Osamu bowed and the people of the village waved goodbye to they’re hero.

Kagome smiled and headed once again on her journey. Sayuri flew from the trees and on to Kagome’s shoulder. “Kagome-sama, do you think everyday will be this exciting?”

Kagome laughed. “Maybe Sayuri...maybe.”

Chapters nine and ten were basically filler chapters just to give readers an idea of Kagome’s life before being reunited with Inuyasha and the others. And maybe Akira and Osamu will return, hey you never know. Anyway read and review. All feedback is welcome!!!
