Chapter One The Fog
"C'mon, Miroku, stop flirting with all the girls and let's get the hell out of here!" yelled InuYasha as he tried to drag his drunken friend into the car. The two young men were out at a small party set by one of the popular kids at school. They both were having fun…but InuYasha didn’t realize how late it was and, being the rowdy man he was, could not be out very long. He had a curfew and he despised it.
"Uh...c'mon InuYasha...the party's just starting," muttered Miroku. His friend literally had to drag him by his arms down the small porch steps. The music and sounds of laughter could be heard through the walls of the house.
"Just shut up and get in the ####### car," snapped InuYasha. He dragged his mumbling friend out towards the car that stood in between a line of them. He eventually let Miroku find his own way into the vehicle. Miroku walked clumsily towards the car, tripping a few times from all the alcohol he drank at their friend's party. He was never the one to drink if you were just an acquaintance, but he just can’t refuse a drink. It was almost dark, and their parents wouldn't be too happy seeing them late, drunk, and half-asleep. Miroku finally got into the car.
"Took you long enough!” yelled InuYasha as he started the car. The ignition let out a rumbling sound, signaling to InuYasha to drive. He immediately began to maneuver his way out into the empty street. Miroku shook his head and held it as he tried to stick his seatbelt on.
"I'm feeling a little dizzy..."
"No ####, Miroku. You just drank half of all the beer on the table!" said InuYasha. He was angry as usual. Miroku chuckled a bit. His half-demon friend hated it when Miroku got drunk. The reason is because every time he gets drunk...there's no stopping him from "spending time" with the ladies. Even when he was sober, he was still a pervert. They drove down the road, trying to pick the best route for home. They lived pretty far from their friend's house and were unfamiliar with the roads. When InuYasha took a sharp turn, a sudden fog began to roll in the street and it practically covered the whole windshield and even the passenger and driver windows.
"Damn, I can't see the road!” yelled InuYasha. He opened the window and looked out and saw nothing but fog, the eerily, chilled air meeting his warm skin. Miroku tried to keep his eyes open to see, but was still trying to shake off all that alcohol. InuYasha couldn't see through the dense mist and tried to make out the road itself. It now completely blocked his view of the road.
Strangely enough, there were no cars in his way. They were the only ones driving down the road. Even at this time of night, there would’ve been at least a tiny sign of life.
"Damn...we'll be late, and dad's gonna be pretty mad,” muttered InuYasha. His father wasn't the type to be calm and cool when it came to InuYasha. He was a full demon and had a small temper. InuYasha was always getting into some kind of trouble and his father had to get him out of it. Unlike his brother, he was particularly the trouble-maker. They’ve been driving for almost ten minutes and InuYasha felt uncomfortable.
“Where in the hell are we?” he said under his breath. He looked stern as he steadily followed the rod laid out in front of him; the only visible parts of it were lit by the headlights.
"Hey InuYasha?" said Miroku. He felt his forehead with his hand.
"What?" said InuYasha with an irritable tone.
"Do you see what I see?"
"No."
"Look over there."
"I still don’t see any…thing…”
InuYasha suddenly halted his statement when he saw a faint light, illuminating the street it seemed to hang by.
"We can stop there and call our parents", said Miroku.
"Keh, bet they won't even let us in. Besides, why the hell are we asking complete strangers to help us?" replied InuYasha.
"C'mon, InuYasha, let's just go. We can’t even see."
"Fine! Whatever!"
InuYasha sighed and turned towards the light and gingerly made his way there. The closer he came, the better he could see what they were headed for; it was a mansion and a large one at that. It looked old; the color of the house seemed to have faded over a long period of time and seemed to have been neglected as well. Old-fashioned windows adorned the walls; it looked like something from a western film. InuYasha stopped in front of the old, vine-covered, metal gate. There was a mesh of tangled chains on it with a large, rusty lock. They both opened their respective doors and shut them. Miroku looked around trying to make out that large gray blur in front of him, but InuYasha noticed something strange with the mansion.
"Miroku, this place is all boarded up" said InuYasha, pointing at the windows. He was right; there were boards of wood that were bolted to the windows, the doors, and even the fence held some protection from intruders. The nails used were carelessly hammered into the wood as if someone was in a hurry. There was barbed wire following the bottom of the fence and on top of it preventing any strangers with “ideas”.
"Great! Just great! We're wasting our time, Miroku. Let's get back in the car and go home" yelled InuYasha. He turned to get back into the car. Miroku nodded and they walked back to the car's parking spot. When they reached it, they were shocked. It was gone.
"What the hell? Where's the car?" asked InuYasha. He searched the foggy area as quickly as he could in a panic. Miroku also examined his surroundings; nothing.
"InuYasha, are you sure you parked it here?" asked Miroku, with a slight “it's-all-your-fault” tone in it.
"Of course, it was right in front of the freaking' gate!" yelled InuYasha. What more trouble could he possibly get in? Miroku sighed.
"He's just like his father...well, sort of" thought Miroku. He sighed again, but smiled. The alcohol was definitely starting to wear off surprisingly.
"Well, InuYasha. I guess we have no choice", said Miroku, turning to look at his furious friend. InuYasha was about to yell at him with a powerful array of insults and curses, but resisted. He let out an exasperated sigh before turning to face the old mansion.
"Yeah...let’s go," replied InuYasha softly. He grumbled as they walked back towards the eerie mansion. InuYasha jumped over the fence without any trouble with his enhanced physical abilities. Miroku, however, even with his athletic status in school, he couldn’t possibly make it. He stood there and smiled. InuYasha immediately recognized what Miroku wanted him to do.
"Ugh, fine, but don’t blame me if the owner gets pissed at us,” muttered InuYasha. He walked towards the secured front gate and held his hand up to his face. His claws were sharp and longer than the average human. He slashed at the rusted chains and they cut through easily like a knife through butter. The pieces of metal made clanging sounds as they fell onto the ground. He pushed open the gate with a simple thrust with his hand and the gate opened up. Miroku stepped through.
"Hurry up! It's getting cold," said InuYasha. The light on the porch ceiling was the only thing that seemed to show of any sign of safety. Miroku started to shake a little as they both reached the front door. He sensed something weird in the area…but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Maybe it was just the fog getting to him, but he had this strange feeling that someone else was out there with them.
"This place gives me the creeps. Hurry and knock," urged Miroku. He had a fearful and anxious look on his face. InuYasha just gave him a brusque “Keh!”
"Can't knock anyway", muttered InuYasha. Miroku glanced at the door, seeing it boarded up just like everything else. This place must be abandoned or something like in a horror flick.
"Might as well just tear it down," said InuYasha. He swiped at the wooden beams and they fell off of the door, making a loud noise as they landed onto the floor beneath them. The sound seemed to echo in the air…
“Times like these are when I’m glad I’m friends with you,” said Miroku, chuckling nervously.
“Shut up,” said InuYasha. The doorknob was visible, but was rusted. InuYasha put a hand on the doorknob and felt a chill go up his spine. The knob felt dusty and cold, like no one has touched it in years. He turned the doorknob and opened the door slowly. He had to admit, even for someone like him, this was indeed a scary situation. The door made a clunk as it hit the doorstop behind it and the two of them went inside into the unknown mansion, hoping to find some source of life.
