Inuyasha sniffed the air. He stopped in the middle of the road, causing dirt to rise up around them. Kagome coughed.
"What's wrong, Inuyasha?" She asked, coming up beside him. She would have thought he didn't hear her, except she saw his ears flicker towards her. Kagome coughed again, this time to get Inuyasha's attention.
"I'll be right back, Kagome." Inuyasha chased into the woods after something, his red haori flipping in the winds.
Kagome sighed and turned around, gasping when she walked into Koga’s chest. “Koga.”
“Mutt face doesn’t know what he’s doing.” He said, squinting in the direction Inuyasha left. Koga had been traveling with Inuyasha, Kagome, Sango, and Miroku for about a month, ever since Naraku plotted his pack against him. Koga didn’t remember much, just that they all were dead.
“What…Koga, what do you mean?” Kagome asked. She stepped back a few steps to look him in the eye.
“He’s going to see that damn miko again.” He continued to stare in the direction Inuyasha had left for a moment before glancing down at Kagome. Her bottom lip quivered slightly and tears welled up in her eyes. “Kagome?” Koga asked in a soft tone.
Kagome smiled sadly and shook her head. “I’m fine, Koga. I’m going to take a walk.”
She started to walk past him and was almost past Sango and Miroku (who were watching with interest) before Koga turned around and reached out his hand, his eyebrows in a worried state.
“Let me come with you.”
Kagome shook her head and forced a smile. “That won’t be necessary.” Before Koga- or anyone, for that matter- could protest, Kagome turned on her heel and walked stiffly down the opposite way they had come.

Kagome groaned when she passed the same rock for what seemed like the millionth time. She had stayed on the trail so she didn’t get lost, but it seemed she had traveled very far from her friends. She looked up at the midnight blue sky. It was getting darker by the minute. Kagome cursed in her head.
Deciding that going off the trail would be the best way to get back to her friends, Kagome pushed her way through twigs and bushes for about twenty minutes before she stumbled into a clearing. She squeaked as she slid down the steep hill. She tried unsuccessfully to grab a hand-hold, foot-hold, anything she could use to stop herself from getting hurt. Before she could find anything, she screamed loudly upon falling twenty feet and landing awkwardly on the grass.
Dirt covered her clothes and skin. Kagome made a mental note to wash them later. She stood and winced. It seemed her ankle was sprained. She struggled to keep a steady pace, and stumbled many times before hearing voices. She gasped. Inuyasha and Kikyo!
“Inuyasha, if you wish not to come to hell with me, here is the rest of the jewel from Naraku-”
“Naraku?” Inuyasha asked suspiciously. Kikyo nodded and set the jewel in his hands.
“You can wish on it once you tell my reincarnation to come out of her hiding behind that rock.” Kagome gasped. Inuyasha turned his head towards her.
“Kagome?”
She stepped out from behind the rock and started to walk toward them. Inuyasha’s eyes widened before running to her side and picking her up bridle style.
“You’re hurt. You shouldn’t be walking with that ankle.” Kagome idly wondered how Inuyasha knew she hurt her ankle, but brushed it off. Inuyasha sat down with her in his lap. She leaned against his chest and breathed in. Inuyasha rested his arms around Kagome’s middle.
“Kikyo, thank you. Can Kagome and I have a minute?” Kikyo nodded in response and walked towards the woods.
Once she was out of sight, Kagome shifted in his arms so she could see him. She touched his cheek, making him look down at her. Kagome gasped slightly at the intensity in his eyes.
“Kagome,” he started. “up until a few months ago, I wanted to become a full demon. At that time, I was too stubborn to admit…too stubborn to tell you…” He looked up to the darkening sky and bit his lip. Kagome sat up straighter and pulled his chin so he was looking at her.
“You can tell me.” She said, smiling reassuringly. Inuyasha nodded but averted his eyes.
“I want to tell you…um, I…I…love…you.” He swallowed and met Kagome’s eyes again. Tears were filling her eyes and threatening to fall. “Kago--”
He never got to finish.
His eyes widened slightly before all life left them and he slumped forward.
“I-Inuyasha?” Kagome shook him, her tears finally falling, but not in joy anymore. She shook him again. “Inuyasha…I love you, too! Inuyasha! Inuyasha…” Her voice trailed off as a sob racked her body.
She looked down when she felt something sharp. It was a part of a fan. Kagome scooted out of Inuyasha’s now-loose grasp and stood, looking up.
About ten feet away stood Kagura.
What surprised Kagome even more is when tears started to fall down Kagura’s cheeks.
They stared at each other.
Finally Kagura spoke.
“I didn’t want to…I didn’t…Naraku…he said I would be free….”
“Kagome!”
Kagome looked in the direction of Sango’s voice. She, along with Miroku and Koga, who was carrying a sleeping Rin, were running towards them. They slowed to a walk and eventually stopped when they saw Inuyasha’s body and Kagome’s tears.
“Kagome…” Koga whispered before quickly setting Rin down and rushing to her, letting her collapse in his arms, sobbing. He looked to where Kagome had been facing, confused when no one was there.
Kagome broke away from Koga and kneeled before Inuyasha. She took the jewel from his cold hand and took her part of it from the glass bottle that hung around her neck. Without a second thought, she slammed the two pieces together. The Shikon Jewel glowed brightly and became so hot Kagome dropped it. Everyone shielded their eyes from the blinding light.
A woman’s voice filled the air. “Is this your true wish, Kagome?”
Kagome nodded, knowing exactly what the voice was talking about.
“Very well.” The voice answered.
The jewel seemed to glow even brighter before all the light was gone. Kagome vaguely registered the rain that started to fall heavily as she stared at Inuyasha, willing for her wish to take place.
Minutes passed.
The rain fell harder.
Miroku knelt next to Kagome and put a hand on her shoulder. She noticed he was crying a little bit. “When do you want for the burial--”
“There’s not going to be a burial!” Kagome exploded, turning shoving Miroku away from her and scooting over to Inuyasha. She carefully set his head on her lap. Sobs shook through her. She put a hand over her mouth and stroked Inuyasha’s face with the other. When she heard someone else crying, she looked up.
Kikyo stood, not five feet away, tears streaming down her face. She tried to walk forward, but fell to the ground.
Thunder roared in the distance. No one noticed.
Mud and rain seeped in through their clothes. Kagome felt someone sit next to her. She already knew who it was. Tears rolled down Sango’s face as she stared at Inuyasha. Everyone was too caught up in their own emotions to notice a low moan from the hanyou. He struggled to open his eyes. They felt as if they were a hundred pounds-- each.
“’Gome?” He reached up to touch her cheek.
All the her sobbing stopped, as did everyone else’s. Inuyasha sat up groggily. Kagome looked down at him in disbelief.
“Inuyasha!”
He was suddenly thrown back by his love throwing herself at him. She squeezed him so tight he had to loosen her arms so he could breathe. He hugged her back, for once not caring who saw or where they were.
“I love you, Inuyasha…I love you more than anything.” Kagome mumbled into his neck over and over again. He closed his eyes and smiled, holding Kagome tighter.
After a few moments, he opened his eyes to look at all his friends and smirked his signature smirk.
“Miss me?”
Everyone, including Koga, started laughing and nodded. Sango stopped abruptly.
“Inuyasha,” She exclaimed. “you…you’re human! A-and…your wound is healed!”
He nodded and Kagome pulled back so she could look at him. A hand covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry, Inuyasha. I didn’t wish for you to become human!”
Inuyasha smiled. “I know. I wished for that on my own. For you.”
Kagome smiled and nodded her head towards the forgotten miko. Inuyasha raised an eyebrow and turned his head toward Kikyo, who had crawled closer to them and was now sitting a few feet away from Kagome. Kagome let go of Inuyasha so he could talk to Kikyo.
Without standing, Inuyasha met her eyes. “Thank you, Kikyo. Without you, I wouldn’t be alive.”
Kikyo nodded before letting a few tears fall and hugging him in a friendly embrace. “Goodbye, Inuyasha.” She whispered in his ear before standing.
Her soul collectors wrapped around her body and carried her into the raining sky until she disappeared from sight. Inuyasha smiled slightly and looked back to the group.
He held Kagome and stood. “Kirara.” He called. The fire-neko was at his side in an instant, fully transformed. Inuyasha set Kagome on her back.
“Hey, mutt face!” Koga called, smiling playfully.
Inuyasha turned. “What do you want, wolf boy?” He replied in the same tone.
“I think I’ll go now, along with Rin. Ayame’s waiting for us, I think.” Everyone followed his gaze to the trees. The redheaded wolf demon leaned against a tree. She smiled at Koga. As he ran to join her, he turned and called back, “I won’t forget this, Inuyasha!”
“Bye, Koga.” Inuyasha called back. That was the first- and probably last- time they had ever called each other by their first names.
Kagome was trying to get off Kirara, careful of her ankle. Inuyasha turned.
“Oi! Wench, I thought I set you on Kirara.” He smiled as Kagome wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned onto his chest.
“You did.”
Sango was inspired by their actions to be forward to Miroku. She leaned on his shoulder. “Miroku…”
She didn’t notice until it was too late. SLAP! “Pervert!”
Inuyasha and Kagome laughed as they helped Miroku onto Kirara’s back, along with Sango.
“We’ll walk.” Kagome said, grasping Inuyasha’s hand. Sango nodded and took off with Kirara.
Once they were alone, Kagome felt a tug at her hand. She looked up at Inuyasha. He leaned closer, as did Kagome, eventually closing the space between them as their lips met.
Not that they noticed, but the sun started to rise slowly, and the rain let up to a light sprinkle. The day had had some rough spots, but getting through it was what made it shine so brightly.
