The afternoon breeze flowed through her silver hair as she looked into the Forbidden Forest. For almost fifty years she had come there, thinking of had become of the two lovers that had ventured deep into the deep woods. “Lady Kaede! What are you looking at? Why are you looking at the Forbidden Forest?” A small child asked. Kaede looked down at the small child whose face produced a look of curiosity. “Young one, have you ever heard the story of the two ill-fated lovers?”

“No my lady.”

Kaede looked down at the small boy and smiled. “Perhaps ye should gather up ye friends and I shall tell you the story. About a beautiful princess, a tragic priestess and a half demon named Inuyasha.” She suggested. The young boy ran ahead of Kaede and into the village where they had lived, shouting for everyone to come to the village temple. As she neared her temple, scenes from Kaede's past played in her mind. The days when she followed her sister and practiced to shoot arrows the same way as she did, the days when she would watch her fight of evil demons and the day she was murdered. “Kikyo, I miss thee so much.”

“Lady Kaede? What is wrong?”

Kaede turned to the child and smiled, assuring him that nothing was troubling her. As she had expected, the boy had brought many of his friends to hear the story of the Ill-Fated Lovers. They gathered around Kaede to listen closely as she told the forlorn tale.

“Children, can anyone tell me what the name of that forest is?” Kaede asked. One of the children spoke faster than the others. “It is the Forbidden Forest! Father says if we enter it a demon will eat us whole. It is a dangerous place.”

“Yes but that is not all there is to it young one. The Forbidden Forest is also known as the Forest of the Ill-Fated Lovers. It is because many years ago, a woman fell in love with a half demon. The two were shunned by their families and friends because of their love for each other. So they fled to the forest to be free of the criticism and to love each other. The story goes like this…over fifty years ago.”

Fifty Years Ago…

The calm summer's breeze passed through the grassy meadow. Except for the sound of the wind and young Kaede's singing, it was quiet. The Priestess Kikyo and her younger sister Kaede followed two guards through the village gates and into the castle where the king and his daughter awaited them. They were led outside into the garden, where the king and his daughter sat under a cherry blossom tree. “My daughter and I welcome you to our home priestess Kikyo. My thanks for accepting our hospitality.” The king said. Kikyo nodded to the king. “Thank you king Jinji and Princess Setsuyo for you kindness. Now, you have summoned me here for the purpose of protecting Princess Setsuyo is that correct?”

“Yes. Priestess Kikyo, there has been three attacks on our village by a clan of demons. I can't risk losing my precious daughter. She is to be wed to a prince nearby but he too is going to join us in the fight against these demons. I only ask that you take supervision over my daughter until this battle is won.”

At that moment, Setsuyo took the chance to speak. “Father please, you can't possibly be staying behind to fight. Please come with me.” She begged. Setsuyo's father shook his head at her then turned to Kikyo. “Will you aide me and grant supervision to my daughter priestess?” He asked.

“I will. Setsuyo will be safe in my care. For your daughter's sake and mine, be careful. There are too many who are awaiting your return.”

With that, Kikyo, Kaede and Setsuyo left the castle and walked back to the Kikyo's village. Along the way, Setsuyo had been silent as she had been when Kikyo had spoken to her father. “Setsuyo, would you like to sing with me? Try it, it always makes me feel better.” Kaede offered. Setsuyo listened to Kaede sing her song then joined in with her. Kikyo would have to thank her young sibling for taking the concern from Setsuyo but she knew that she would discern the fact that her father would be in constant danger. When they arrived, the villagers stared at the black haired beauty that followed Kikyo to her temple. “The people of the town are stunned by your arrival. I think you may have won many of the men's hearts already.” Kikyo teased. Setsuyo blushed as she followed Kikyo into her house. Once inside, she set a place for her to sleep and went outside to explore. The townspeople had once again stared and whispered as she passed by. To escape the murmurs and eyes of the people, Setsuyo went to the meadow and watched the clouds pass by. “Setsuyo, try not to worry so much about your father and your betrothed. They did this because they care very much for you and wish not for any harm to come to you.”

“I know but they can't just expect me to stay here without worrying. Kikyo I- I don't know what to do or thing.”

“Just be patient and wait.”

::: Princess Setsuyo was very aware of what was happening with the fight between her father and the demons but was she was not aware of was that there was also a war between the demons that attacked her home and another band of demons. They were led by the fearsome demons Sesshomaru, Naraku and Inuyasha. :::

Deep in the forest, a silver haired demon with piercing gold eyes waited for the return of his comrades. He sat down, watching the little black haired girl play with his faithful servant Jaken. “Lord Sesshomaru! Lord Inuyasha and Naraku have returned.” She announced gleefully. Sesshomaru looked to his brother, who had the same appearances as he did except his eyes were my fuller and the demon dressed in all black with devious red eyes. “That damn Hakuoh has strengthened the numbers of his demons. He wiped out a number of our demons.” Inuyasha cursed. Naraku sat across from Sesshomaru, closing his eyes. “Things are not turning out as we've planned. Hakuoh being able to defeat us wasn't anticipated. He's very powerful.”

“He is just that but ever the most powerful demon can crumble. We are going to increase our power. Using the sacred Shikon Jewel, we will become a force that will bring Hakuoh to his knees. You, Inuyasha, are going to steal it from that priestess Kikyo. Kill whoever opposes you.”

“No problem.” He replied, grinning. Inuyasha left his companions and walked to the exit of the forest, his gold eyes peering into the darkened skies of the night. Soon enough he would be powerful to be rid of their nemesis Hakuoh and become the most feared band of demons in Feudal Japan. “Why not take a look at tomorrow's victims?” He questioned as she walked toward Kikyo's village.

Even though the night was quiet Setsuyo still found it impossible to sleep. She wrapped a kimono around herself and silently crept from Kikyo's house. She went for a walk through the village until she came across a waterfall. A cool drink might help her to sleep. She scooped up some water in her hands and brought it to her mouth, drinking the cool liquid. From the trees, Inuyasha drew closer, hearing the movements of a human. Drawing the Tetsusaiga, Inuyasha came closer to the edge of the waterfall until he was able to have a clear view of who was at the waterfall. He waited until they lifted their face up, that would be the perfect time to strike. But when Setsuyo lifted her face up, Inuyasha froze. She was beautiful, black hair and lovely brown eyes, absolutely breath taking. She never noticed he was there as she drank from the lake, she was too overwhelmed with thirst to know that a pair of gold eyes were watching her from above. However, at the moment the demon who was watching her was no longer interested in slaying the girl. ::: This girl…could she be Princess Setsuyo? I've heard of her. She's the daughter of king Jinji. Why is she here? :::

Setsuyo sat back from the lake and wiped her mouth. As she sat back, she looked up to the sky and saw her observer. She got to her feet and stared back at him. Their eyes were focused on each other, neither one had moved. Moving into the water, Setsuyo called out to the man, asking him to come down.

“Please come down. I only want to talk to you.”

“…”

Inuyasha took a step closer and fell from the waterfall. Setsuyo rushed to Inuyasha's side immediately, fearing he would be hurt. She wanted to pull him from the water but she couldn't swim and feared she would drown if she were to go to him. She searched the water for him and was relieved when she saw his head surface from the water. Inuyasha gasped and swam toward Setsuyo. “Are you hurt? Please let me see.”

“I'm not hurt.”

Setsuyo took Inuyasha's hand and led him to dry land. “You'll catch a cold if you stay in there.” She said. Inuyasha nodded and looked down into Setsuyo's beautiful brown eyes. Her grip on his hand weakened then she freed his hand. “My name is Setsuyo, what is your name?” She introduced. Inuyasha fought back the blush that threatened to rise to his cheeks. “Setsuyo…”

“Yes, will you please tell me your name?”

Inuyasha said nothing, backed away from her then fled. Seconds after he left, Setsuyo was approached by the village guards. “Princess why are you out here so late? And what were those sounds? I heard voices.” Desperate to keep her meeting with a stranger secret, Setsuyo lied to the guards saying that she heard nothing and she had only left for a drink. Believing her, the guard led Setsuyo back into the village and escorted her back to Kikyo's house. For the rest of the night, the guard stood watch over Kikyo's house.

::: For the rest of that night, princess Setsuyo's thoughts stayed on Inuyasha. She found him handsome yet mysterious. As for Inuyasha, he too thought about the beautiful princess. Forgetting about the attack on Kikyo's village, he dreamt of the gentle human woman he had approached. :::
