Before the Rain

The night air was still and warm and heavy, like it gets sometimes before a rain. InuYasha suddenly woke up, opening up amber eyes that glowed eerily in the small light put out by the fire pit.

“Damn,” he muttered, shaking his head.

He reached out to the woman lying next to him in the darkness, his hand sliding over the soft curve of her hip. He molded himself against her in spite of the heat of the night, breathing deeply of her warm scent.

“Fucking bastards,” he murmured. “Not enough that they hurt you but they got to haunt my dreams, too.” He planted a small kiss on Kagome’s shoulder.

Kagome rolled over, snuggling against him. She lifted up a hand, and brushed her fingers lightly across his cheek.

“Didn’t mean to wake you,” InuYasha said. Taking her hand in one of his, he brought it to his lips and gave it a gentle kiss, then wrapped her in his arms.

“It’s ok,” she said. “You know, those men are gone, and I’m still here.”

“Yeah.” He kissed her on her forehead. “That’s what really matters.”

A cooling breeze began to blow through the house. Not long after that, the rain began to fall. Listening to its gentle music, InuYasha pondered the importance of Kagome, and after awhile, fell asleep.
