The Keeper
Chapter Six: Sesshomaru, and A Moment In Time
It was gorgeous, the tall house with its impeccable likeness to a mansion from the late seventeen hundreds in the English territory that she always read about in school. This world was always throwing one surprise after another at her, she was happy though to finally find refuge somewhere that seemed comfortable and well protected from the new monsters in her life. Though she was not blind to the way, it seemed to make Inuyasha feel uncomfortable in the presence of his brother’s new home.
Sango along with Miroku and Shippo climbed down from Kirara’s back, and the neko youkai soon transformed back into a small kitten retreating into the gardens that seemed to weave their way around the house. The three began their trek to the large oak doors that seemed to be the entrance to this new environment, though Inuyasha stood still not moving, while gripping Kagome’s hand not allowing her to make a move towards the house either.
It almost confused her too, he had non-stop talked about how urgent it was for them to make it here, the protection of his brother the most important object to obtain. Yet now, he seemed afraid to approach as if it was a foreign place, somewhere he had hoped to never return.
She squeezed his hand hoping to bring him out of his stupor, “What’s wrong?” His eyes seemed glassy, glazed over as if he was somewhere far far away. The sound of her voice seemed to bring him back to reality as he slightly shook his head and turned to lock eyes with her.
“Nothing, just recalling the last time I was here, not under such circumstance as this for sure.” He was secretly hoping his brother would not flip out after learning of the fate of the Shikon No Tama, though he knew once he saw the jewel split in half he would probably have all of their heads.
She nodded her head as she tugged on his arm, urging him to move forward with her, before someone saw their hesitance as disrespect of Sesshomaru’s hospitality towards them. “Let’s go, there is much to be done. Finding me some proper clothes so you can have your fire rat back, and explaining the reason behind the state of the jewel is only just a few.” He nodded, noticing her smile wondering how she was able to remain so carefree when so much was bombarding her life, and the two were off following after their companions.
As they entered the house, they were not left alone for long, though Miroku and Shippo seemed to be nowhere in sight. They saw no sign of their escort Sango either, just a small imp like figure coming towards them, seeming to be muttering under his breath, not at all pleased with the task he was given. Approaching he stiffly bowed, only to be respectful of course, who knew what could happen if he showed no respect to his Lord’s younger brother?
“Lieutenant Inuyasha, it’s too soon to see you…I mean, it has been a terribly long time since you last graced us with your scent let alone your presence.” His head was still tilted as he spoke, the blunt rudeness of his comment taking Kagome by surprise. The dislike radiated off the toad in waves, making her very uncomfortable.
“Yeah, yeah Jaken. I know you can hardly wait for me to leave so, you are dismissed I’m sure we can find our way to Sesshomaru on our own.” His obvious familiarity seemed to irritate the man, and if he had feathers, she was sure they would have been ruffled.
“That is Dog General Sesshomaru to you!” He snapped and then he was gone in the blink of an eye, knowing his words were spoken out of turn and had he stayed still would have been reprimanded for it.
Kagome stood still just watching the show with peeked curiosity towards their actions and behavior. “Well, that thing was quite rude.” Finishing her statement, she swore she heard someone or something was cursing about humans and filth far deeper in the house but only shrugged as she realized that she really did not care.
“That was Jaken, one of my brother’s unfailing loyal servants, though he isn’t quite fond of me nor humans, so just ignore him and I’m sure you will get along just fine.” He smiled flashing her one of his pearly white fangs, making her forget about his solemn greeting to the house earlier.
However, their peaceful exchange was cut short as she felt a strong and cold presence make it known in the foyer, causing a chilling shiver to make its way down her spinal cord, reaching into her toes making them curl. Turning she found that someone with similar features to Inuyasha, only more guarded and quite a bit taller stood at the foot of the stairwell that seemed to be the main attraction when you first entered the household.
She felt very small when she realized it seemed he had his nose curled up, waiting for a response from the hanyou who only stood with his arms crossed. Obviously irritated by the air of this arrogant man, though she only wanted to quiver and take cover beneath the staircase until he was gone.
“Little brother…” He spoke with a strong and dominating tone while approaching the two and Kagome could feel the tension between the two. From the way he had spoken of his elder brother, she would have thought that they were close but it seemed that they actually really did not like each other.
“Sesshomaru…” At this rate, they would get nowhere fast so Kagome reached out and grasped a portion of Inuyasha’s skin in between her fingers and squeezed. “Ouch, you wench what was that for?!”
Crossing her arms, she turned her head in the opposite direction mimicking his very own stance. “We don’t have time to play this I hate you, you hate me game. Just cut to the chase, I’m the new Keeper who was stolen away from her life for this piece of costume jewelry!”
Inuyasha just stood with his mouth wide open staring at the woman who normally was so passive and quiet. Now she just seemed irritated and worn out, though he could not blame her she had been through a lot lately.
Pulling out his piece of the jewel, he handed it to the frustrated young woman who held it out in an extended hand with her piece towards the taiyoukai.
“What happened?” He bellowed as he snatched the pieces out of the girl’s small fragile hands.
“I was taken by a demon, and he stepped on my hand while I was holding it but it only cracked, then when I was attacked the jewel reacted and it broke from the strain I guess.” The courage she had shown earlier was long gone by now and she was inching backwards to hide behind her hanyou escort.
Sesshomaru was angry, his face did not show it but his body radiated negative energy. “You guess, the jewel breaks in your care and all you can say is that you guess?!” She scrambled behind Inuyasha hoping to find safety from this angry demon, avoiding his wrath was all she could concentrate on.
Inuyasha quickly held his arms out to act as a barrier from his brother, his ultimate goal to keep Kagome safe.
"Calm down little brother, I wouldn't lay a finger on the Keeper, no matter how incompetent she may be." His face remained in its stoic fashion as he examined the two pieces of the jewel that seemed to split symmetrically down the middle.
"Hey, I'm not incompetent, just not used to demons and such." Her fake confidence that had resurfaced in the beginning had diminished by the end of her sentence as Sesshomaru's eyes met hers as he raised an eyebrow.
"I guess some things just can't be helped." Sesshomaru returned the two pieces of the jewel to Kagome and turned to walk up the stairs.
Inuyasha slipped his hand into Kagome's, which threw her for a loop, though he only began to move up the stairs using his hand to guide her behind him. She remained in Inuyasha's fire rat robe, yet to be given anything to cover her own body.
As they reached the top of the stairwell, Sango there previous escort, was waiting patiently.
"Kagome, please come with me." She had a soft face yet no smile, but she did not seem to be putting anyone out. Kagome turned her head to look Inuyasha in the eye who sniffed the air slightly and then nodded his head.
"Go ahead. Just bring her back to me and Sesshomaru once you're finished with her okay?"
Sango nodded and bowed her head before speaking once again. "Yes, Lieutenant Inuyasha. Your other companions are awaiting you in the study where the General is leading you."
With that, the two pairs parted ways, Kagome and Sango heading to the left and Sesshomaru and Inuyasha heading to the right. The two girls were quiet as they walked down the hallway, Kagome nervously fidgeting with the tie on the front of the robe she was wearing.
"That is an irritating habit that you have, please quit it." Immediately Kagome dropped her hands to the side, afraid of making the woman escort angry with her.
Sango abruptly stopped in front of a large oak door, reached out resting her small hands on the doorknob, and turned it. As the door swung open, Kagome entered before Sango to find herself in a large room similar to the one she had seen in her dreams.
Lying on the bed was a black suit similar to the one that Sango wore; only it had white lining instead of the pink that Sango wore.
"It was the only thing we had out of storage on such short notice, I'm sure if you give it a day or two that the maids could dig something else out for you if you would like. Though I have to say it is a very comfortable outfit and makes it very easy to move around in battle."
Kagome nodded her head to the woman.
"Thank you, I appreciate the help." Kagome dropped the robe as she turned her back to Sango and grabbed the outfit and began to step into it.
Once she had pulled it up and over her body, she found that she was right, it was comfortable. However, she realized quickly that she could not reach the zipper in the back.
"Here let me help you." Sango spoke as she stepped forward and gripped the zipper pulling it up for Kagome. "Better be careful though, it seems you have found yourself a traveling pervert in that houshi you three picked up, this suit doesn't leave too much to the imagination. That is it's only downfall though."
Kagome smiled as she listened to Sango speak.
"Well, I guess it is better than that fire rat robe that Inuyasha let me borrow." She blushed as she remembered the night when she had slipped up and revealed her breasts to the hanyou on accident. His cheeks too had been red.
Combing her fingers threw her long wavy black hair she smiled at Sango once more and then draped the fire rat over her arm. "Thank you, I appreciate the hospitality that you have shown me." She fingered the two pieces of the Shikon as she spoke.
"Not a problem, though we should probably be getting to the study before they come looking for us." With that, Sango turned on her heel and opened the door once again so that the two of them could exit the room.
Kagome followed close behind her escort as they made their way toward the study where the men of their party awaited their arrival.
The scene the two females walked in on was enough to make them giggle.
Inuyasha stood next to Miroku glaring daggers at the monk who in turn had grabbed his side locks that hung freely but now tightly in his fists. Whilst the houshi stood calm with his eyes lidded as if he were drinking tea.
What had caused the situation was beyond them and details were only time consuming so they giggled and continued to join any discussion that may occur.
The two males quickly dropped there act as they were made aware of the arrival of the two females as Shippou rushed by screeching out Kagome's name.
Inuyasha's mouth went dry, there was just something about seeing Kagome's youthful, and fit, body in that tight exterminator suit that made all the blood rush from his head downwards. However, he would never admit it.
"Awe the fiery Sango with the sweet, naive, young Kagome. Aren't you two looking fabulously beautiful?" Miroku spoke as his eyes found the two girls at the doorway. Just as quick as he had said it, he was seeing stars as Inuyasha's fist made contact with the crown of Miroku's head.
"Fucking lecher." Inuyasha spoke as he crossed his arms and lifted his nose into the air in the opposite direction.
"Now if we are finished with these childish games I would like to move onto bigger and better things." Sesshomaru spoke silencing all arguments, gaining everyone's attention.
Sesshomaru motioned for Kagome to step forward and guided her to a small table in the center of the room. "Go ahead and set the two pieces of the Shikon No Tama right here, Keeper."
Keeper? I have a name.
Thoughts that she knew she would never speak out.
Kagome followed the instructions and then stood close to Inuyasha, the one person in this world that she fully trusted.
"So what I gather happened is that this little kitsune here lured you into a village where the Thunder Brothers were located." He waved his hand majestically in Shippou's direction, who immediately ducked down trying to avoid any disapproving stares. "And, from there you managed to get separated from Inuyasha and then proceeded to be kidnapped?"
Kagome began to nod her head, and then it hit her. "It's not like I screamed, 'Hey Hiten and Manten come kidnap me and shatter my hand while in turn cracking the jewel!'"
Sesshomaru only raised an eyebrow at the girl’s outburst.
"Wench, be quiet that is not what he is saying. It is just a break down of the situation for Sango, himself and I guess you can count this hentai in too."
There was a long pregnant pause before Sesshomaru began speaking again. "And as she said her hand was stepped on and in turn the jewel, causing it to crack down the middle. Then when it activated to protect her it split in half from the strain."
Everyone nodded there heads in acknowledgment.
"Now the question is, is it a bad thing and can it be fixed?" Sango spoke out for the first time since entering the study with Kagome.
"I'm not sure if it is a bad thing, only making it harder for anyone who wishes to obtain power of the jewel to actually acquire it...IF you placed the two pieces in separate locations." Miroku half mumbled to himself.
"I agree maybe we should just leave it like this, I'll take a piece and Kagome could keep the other." Kagome, along with everyone else, swiveled her head to stare at Inuyasha.
"How do we know you don't have an ulterior motive?" Shippou screeched out as he leapt up and onto Inuyasha's head. Before he had the chance to settle into his perch Inuyasha grabbed him by the tail and brought the kit face to face, but before the two could begin arguing, a bad habit that was almost constant since they met, Sesshomaru spoke out once again.
"Not happening, though it's not obvious I can assure you that there probably is some consequence to the splitting of the jewel and so it can not remain in two pieces. So tomorrow at the break of day, Inuyasha you will be escorting Kagome to Totosai‘s." Inuyasha nodded and ignored Shippou's disappointed sigh. "As for the rest of you, you will be staying here if you plan to aid the Keeper.
"Dismissed."
It had been a few hours since they had been dismissed from Sesshomaru’s study, and everyone else had retired to their quarters. Though as she lay in bed staring at the ceiling in the darkness she could not sleep, she could only think on what would happen if they did not find a way to return the jewel to its true form. At the top of that list would be not getting home, never seeing her mother and baby brother ever again.
A tear slid from her eye and made its way slowly down the side of her face, tickling her cheek as she rolled over and slid out of the giant bed she was allowed for the night. To the left side of her bed was a large set of glass doors covered in white curtains that reached the floor. Through the glass, she could see the courtyard that lies behind the mansion. Empty with only stone benches scattered in a circle around the entire yard, with one giant fountain in the center.
Kagome made her way through those doors and out into the cool breeze of the late night wishing her world were just as beautiful as this one. The nightgown that she had been graced with fluttered at her ankles tickling the inside of her leg. She could feel her nipples sharply graze against the light; slightly see through fabric that covered her chest. The cold causing a shiver to roll down her spine also, so she wrapped her long arms around herself as she made her way to the fountain in the center of the courtyard.
In the middle of the fountain was a large stone dog that seemed to be guarding the yard, and smirk graced her lips as she nodded her head appreciating the character similarities of the statue and the two brothers who now watched over her.
He watched from a distance, hoping that she could not sense his presence.
He sighed. He felt as if he was taken back over two hundred years.
From behind, she looks exactly like her, but when I smell the air and she turns to look at me I know, it is not her.
Kagome, he had only known her for about a week and a half now but he felt drawn to her, like there was something waiting for him if he only dug deeper. As he continued to watch her examine the canine fountain in his brother’s courtyard, he tiptoed closer to her. To keep a better eye on her, or so he told himself.
He crouched on one of the stone benches as he watched her climb atop the edge of the fountain and sit. The sound of the water splashing softly as her feet were introduced into the water and he couldn’t help but smile as he remembered being a pup over twenty centuries ago. His mother would always allow him to play in the water of the fountain as she watched from a sitting position.
Shaking his head to bring himself out of his trance he realized that he had moved closer and was now standing barely a foot behind Kagome. Taking in a breath, he could smell the sadness roll off her in waves from beneath a light lavender scent.
There was no stopping it, he had to do it.
Kagome just about fell forward into the fountain when she felt a hand lightly graze her shoulder sending shivers down her spine. However, before she could connect with the water another hand gripped her other shoulder preventing her from falling forward.
Her heart was beating at three miles a minute until she turned her head and light sapphire eyes connected with golden orbs easing her runaway heart. Smiling she slightly turned so that she could comfortably face him.
“Inuyasha.” She was quiet and shy as she ducked her head down still surprised to see him out here with her.
“Kagome.” That was the only response he could come up with and he smiled as a slight blush passed over her cheeks. It was kind of cute.
Cute?
Before Inuyasha knew it, his hand was hovering over her head as he allowed his claws to lightly make their way through her ebony silk hair. His hand soon rested below her chin tilting her head up so he could look her directly in the eye.
As a tear slipped from her eye, she rose up so that she could close the distance between them and he finished her thought for her as he pressed his lips against hers. It was brief but as she moved away, he reached out and pulled her back to his chest, resting his lips against hers once again. He asked for entrance into her mouth by licking her lips with his tongue and she obliged.
The deeper the kiss the less attention he paid to their surroundings only focusing on the enigma before him that was Kagome.
Her arms snaked their way around his neck as he moved to lift her up off the fountain and completely into his embrace. As her feet touched the ground, she supported herself by continuing to lean into Inuyasha, trying to forget everything that had happened in the past week in a half.
It was official his brain had no more function, it could only focus on where his hand would wander next, though it quickly found it’s way to her firm backside that he couldn’t help but caress.
What?
His brain almost froze as his heart did stop when he heard something whiz through the air, though he had no idea what it could be. Though he knew, it was most probable that it was unwanted, and within two seconds he was one hundred percent sure that was true.
“KAGOME!”
Kagome had jerked when he heard the sound of a crunch, she coughed and he could smell and feel the blood that spewed from her mouth to his face. Her body slipped and he held her tight until he laid her on the grass, her hand reaching up to touch his face with a solemn smile gracing her face with a drizzle of blood from the corner of her mouth.
“Thank you…” She whispered as her eyes slipped closed and his focus changed from her to the attacker at hand.
Standing in front of him was a small boy with freckles splattered across his cheekbones and the bridge of his nose, and no light behind his dull brown eyes. His hair was a dark color pulled into a top knot atop his head, and his body was covered in an outfit similar to Sango, their earlier escort, only his outfit was lined with a green color.
Hanging from his grip was a chain with a sickle type weapon attached at the end, which dripped with blood, Kagome’s blood.
The sight was just enough to make Inuyasha’s eyes bleed red.
“You bastard, who the FUCK do you, think you are?”
The boy did not answer only began to swing the chain back and forth preparing to attack once again, Inuyasha his target now. As the sickle came, whizzing by Inuyasha leaped from his position to a closer stance and hunched over slightly growling. Looking to the boy, he reached out, swiping at him and cutting his shoulder before the boy could leap backwards.
The boy still stood in silence even after being wounded while Inuyasha stood still with his arms up and ready to strike at the slightest movement. As his face rose it was now marred with one purple streak across each of his cheeks and his eyes a blood red color. He howled as he lunged into the air towards the young boy to take revenge for Kagome.
He was unable to reach his target for a field of energy latched onto his body and dragged him face down into the ground thoroughly subduing the transformed hanyou.
“Inuyasha!” Miroku called out as he and Sango came running to the aid of the hanyou.
“Kohaku?” Sango called out to the attacker who stood silent with no emotion in his eyes. He did not respond before he swung his sickle out to hit the woman who called out to him. Sango leapt out of its path before she threw out her own weapon.
“Hiraikotsu!”
As the huge bone like weapon came hurdling through the air the boy leapt backwards to avoid being hit with the weapon and then turned, taking off into the night. Sango ran forward to retrieve Hiraikotsu and stopped, looking out into the darkness where the boy ran.
“Kohaku!” She called out one last time before Miroku interrupted her thoughts.
“Sango! She is fading fast! It appears that boy pierced her back with his sickle.”
Sango did not move from her spot as she thought about the boy that had attacked the Keeper.
Kohaku…
A/N: Sorry took so long to update, I had my plan for where the story was going and then I got a better idea and had to mold things a little differently and faster than I originally planned. I hope you enjoy this chapter!
