The air was deathly still, and a slight chill washed over them. Inu-Yasha felt extremely strange. He had this feeling before, and he tried to remember when. Suddenly it hit him. This was the same, the exact same feeling he had the day his father died, the same feeling he had the day Kikyo killed him and died herself.
IÕm going to die. No, or somebody else will die. He looked around. Can I bear seeing any one of them die? Somehow, during their quest, he had learned to love them all.
What if Shippo died? Would I ever forgive myself? His father is dead because of the shards. Because of me. He knew Kagome shattered the Jewel, but he canÕt help feeling guilty. If it werenÕt for me, Kagome probably wouldnÕt have shattered the Jewel. I should of kept better watch instead of sulking about Kikyo. I.. I almost killed her that day when she freed me. Even if she was Kikyo, she freed me from the spell, and I should of been grateful, not vengeful like I was. If it werenÕt for the prayer beads.. He shuddered.
IÕm sorry, Kagome.
What was I thinking about before that? Oh yeah, Shippo. The poor kid. I understand. I lost my parents at a young age also. We both lost them in childhood, when we were still innocent and knew nothing... Shippo isnÕt exactly innocent, I guess. He chuckled silently to himself. HeÕs braver than he gives himself credit for, though. He glanced around and noticed Sango, obviously deep in thought, with a look of pain on her face. He felt sorry for her.
I know how you feel, Sango. What could you do if Naraku used Kohaku against you? Even if he doesnÕt know you anymore, even if he has turned to the evil side, it is all due to his lack of memories. Even if it wasnÕt, heÕs still your brother. ItÕs like how I can not kill Kikyo, although she isnÕt her former self. She is but a shadow, a person willing to kill me who is in KikyoÕs body, yet I can not kill her. For you, Kohaku even has a chance of remembering. You are in a worse state than I am, Sango, and it is all because of a shard. He cringed. Oh shit, my fault again.
I know, Sango. If there was a chance to bring Kikyo back, even such a slight one that it will obviously never work, I will not kill her. Even now, when there is no chance to bring her back, none at all, I hesitate to kill her.
I want to show you the true Kikyo, the one that I fell in love with. Not this.. this evil demoness who is after my blood. He sighed in frustration. Still I can not kill her. He looked over at Kagome, who was caught in her own thoughts as they walked. So similar.. yet so different.
I wish she isnÕt so caught up on Kikyo. I love her for who she is, and it has nothing to do with Kikyo. But I canÕt tell her that. I must hide my feelings, otherwise my weakness will be shown and I will go down easily. His ears twitched as he heard a sigh. He turned around to find Miroku had made the noise. He was also too deep in his thoughts to notice the others, and when Inu-Yasha looked over, so was Sango and Shippo.
Kill Naraku, or die trying. How it must feel, to grow up knowing his fate, knowing that he must either get sucked into the hellhole on his hand, or die from Naraku. The chances of him defeating Naraku is almost zero, and even if he did the hellhole on his hand might not disappear. His fate is sealed, and now they are walking towards it. Inu-Yasha sighed. What will I do if he dies in this battle? He has known his fate for as long as he lived, but what about me? If any of them died...
NO! He shook his head, trying to shake the thoughts away. We will win this battle and nobody will die except Naraku! He knew he was lying to himself. He looked down at the road and saw many crows cawing at him. He walked into the midst of them, angry. They flew away, scattering everywhere. Goddamn! A death omen is really what we need right before battle.
He turned to find that Miroku had noticed them also, and were kicking at them. He sighed. I hope that if somebody must die, it will be me. IÕd rather die than see any of the others die. IÕd die before I let them die! A sharp command startled him out of his thoughts.
ÒKirara,Ó Sango said to the cat. She immediately transformed into a youkai version of herself and Sango hopped aboard. Miroku and Shippo followed, helping Kagome up.
ÒInu-Yasha, do you want to ride?Ó asked Kagome in a soft tone. I want to ride. I want to be with them this one last time. His instinct told him that the others will think him weird if he joined them. I donÕt care. I want.. I need to be with them before the last battle begins. He mumbled something and hopped on. Everybody looked at him weird. Finally Sango told Kirara to start and they sped away towards their destination.
ÒI was getting sort of tired, so I decided to ride on Kirara. It is faster,Ó Sango explained. Inu-Yasha didnÕt hear her. He was lost in his thoughts again. Shippo poked him. ÒInu-Yasha, what are you thinking about?Ó
Should I tell them how much I care? Before it is too late? Nah, I wonÕt. ÒNothing,Ó he said.
ÒWhat is it, Inu-Yasha?Ó inquired Miroku, and Kagome added, ÒItÕs OK if he doesnÕt want to tell,Ó but her face showed plainly that she wondered what he was thinking.
ÒI.. I was just thinking about how many shards that bastard Naraku had and how long it would take for this quest to end,Ó he said, hoping that he sounded confident of himself. Shippo commented, ÒItÕs a wonder you can even think!Ó and received a bop on the head.
ÒInu-Yasha!Ó exclaimed Kagome, evidently angry, ÒDonÕt do that!Ó She scooped up Shippo, and soon they all fell back into their thoughts.
Inu-Yasha felt guilty for everything. It is all my fault that weÕre here right now. If Kikyo never saw me, then she would probably be strong enough to fend off Naraku. She only let down her guard because she thought it was me. And I didnÕt keep good enough watch when Kagome had the Jewel. I let that crow youkai took it, and now it is shattered.
ShippoÕs parents died because of the Jewel. No matter that I avenged them. It was still my fault. Miroku.. he has the void on his hand from Naraku, who Kikyo probably could have killed.. if it wasnÕt for me. Now he lives a life of anguish, even if he doesnÕt show it. He is fated to die because of me. And now he is walking to his death to aid me! IÕm the fucking cause of most things! There is also Sango. Because of the shards, now her father is dead, and her brother has become a weapon of NarakuÕs.
Thinking about that reminded him of the shard still embedded in KohakuÕs back. Everything, everything is my fault.
IÕm sorry. He said silently. IÕm sorry, everybody. IÕm sorry that I got all of you into this. I love you all, I want you to know that. I hope you understand. He looked around at the silent group, when suddenly Kirara stopped.
ÒWeÕre there,Ó Kagome said.
