Chapter 1
I Just Hope You Are Happy
(flashback)
Kagome sat down under the God's Tree, staring wordlessly at the trunk. Sunshine streamed in through the leafy branches, and a cool breeze rushed through the clean, spring air. Her black hair streamed out behind her like a black river of night, letting the wind cool her sweat covered neck.
Tears stained her face, her eyes were red and puffy. Deep lines were engraved under the hollows of her eyes, to account for her lack of eating and sleeping. Fresh tears streamed down her face, and her body was rigid, right until sobs once again wracked her body.
She buried her face in her hands, aware that her tears were dripping right through her hands and onto the green grass. She bent down low, so she was only a shadow. A pale shadow to encumber the grass, just another ordinary person. She looked up, finally, after what seemed like a millennia. Her face was streaked with wet lines.
Kagome walked around to the back of the tree, and froze, before slowly, almost reluctantly, peering around a branch. She looked on at the grave, a simple stone marker. Kagome froze. She was going to break down again. Just the sight of it made her heart heavy, like a cold weight had been placed on it, a cap had been sealed on the opening of her joy. Her heart felt like it was going to be torn from her chest, the same way it had felt when she had first saw his lifeless body laying on the cold hard ground, when she first realized he would not be waking up again from his sleep.
Kagome sank to her knees, and stayed there. It was her first time seeing the grave, and she couldn't tear her eyes away from it. She walked over and bent down, and inspected the stone carefully. It was as Keade had told her it was going to be. They were going to be buried together.
Kagome felt like her heart had been ripped out of her chest. She had never felt this pain before. Like little strands tugging at her brain, and every bit of her sanity. "I just hope you are happy," she whispered through her tears. Suddenly inspired, she reached for a sharp stone and pressed it against the tree trunk. Slowly, she carved and small heart into the wood. Inspecting it, she reached up again and drew a deep, long crack straight down the middle.
(end of flashback)
Light filtered in through the window. The sunset glowed a deep, majestic color, as if colors had been smeared onto a painting. A cold gust of wind broke the ringing hot stillness that hung in the air like a suffocating velvet drape. You could see the heat rising off the baked ground, and the shimmery feel of the air.
Kagome sat on her bed, staring out of the window of her room. A single tear made it's way down her cheek, more welling up in her eyes. Her face reflected the orange glow that came from the sunset. Kagome bowed her head, the tears streaming down her face. After about a minute, her shoulders stopped shaking and she lifted her wet face. Her face was contorted in a mixture of sadness and indecision. Slowly, she got to her feet.
Taking a step at a time, she walked towards a corner of her room. Slowly bending down, she picked up a thin box from the corner, hidden behind a few papers. Holding the dusty box in her trembling hands, she delicately brushed the tips of her fingers over the surface, letting the dust float into the air, swirling to the ground, dancing around her legs. Kagome slowly opened one end of the box, and a necklace tumbled out. Her eyes glinted, threatening to overflow again.
She backed away from where it lay on the floor, and bumped against the wall. Kagome was a good 5 feet away from it when she took a deep breath and bravely bent down towards it. Slowly picking it up, she massaged it and let the dust fall from the glistening beads. It was a rosary, Inuyasha's rosary. The one that let Kagome command him with a single word.
Thinking about him made the tears spill. She had profusely blocked all thought and meaning of him out of her mind for the past month. She tried so hard to keep him from invading her thoughts, failing every time. Now she had thought that she had moved on enough, but she was quite wrong. Instead, she had kept it all bottled up inside, and it had eaten away at her.
Too many tears had been left unshed, too many words had been left unspoken. He had left her forever, and he wasn't coming back. He had never loved her, but loved her as someone else, believing that Kikyo had come back to him again through her. Kagome had been betrayed one too many times. "Inuyasha…" she whispered through her tears.
She felt the salty, tangy taste as several tears fell into her mouth. She recalled the flashback had just a while ago of going to Inuyasha's grave. She had taken that as a sign that she had moved on. She had been so wrong. Remembering the words she had said, she whispered, "I just hope you are happy." The air shimmered in the heat, and Kagome could swear she had heard him laugh.
