He had walked with her on this path oh so many times before…and now, he feared it would be his last time. The next time she would walk this path, it would be the old woman, the kit, Sango, or even the monk who matched her stride and would see her off for the last time. The last time… It seemed like it would be the last time for a great deal of things…
It would be the last battle… The last journey they would all make together… The last chance for him to be near her… The last chance he would have to tell her… The last time she would have to deal with him and his rudeness… The last time she would have to hear of his promise to Kikyou… The last time she would have to deal with his decision… The last time for oh, so many things…
And she didn't even recognize it… She refused to… She had become so withdrawn over the months, disappearing into the well and then never being at the shrine when he would go to retrieve her. But it was to be expected, Kaede had explained to him over and over again. She was mourning…and unlike Sango, she was not able to seek revenge for her lost family members.
`Kagome…if I make it through this, and Kikyou is put to rest with me still alive… I'll do right by you, I swear it… This is the last promise I can make to you right now… This is the last time, I swear it…'
