I do not own Inuyasha
Kagome stood by the grave of the woman she came to call sister. She was gone now. She would never have the chance to watch her baby grow and Kagome knew that it tore her percious houshi apart. He became more closed off to his friends after the death of the woman he never had a chance to wed, but sired a little baby girl with.
"I'm glad they are together again." Kagome sighed softly, referring to the grave besides the lost taijiya, that marked the final resting place of her younger brother.
"Yes, it was how she wanted it." The soft spoken monk stated.
"Miroku? What are you going to do now?"
"Rebuild."
Miroku and Kirara were the first to say goodbye to the shrinking group.
"But Kagome, what about you and Inuyasha? You need me to protect you!" The young kitsune cried through tears. Five older fox demons were waiting in the distance for him in their true forms, at least they allowed the child a final goodbye to his Mother.
"Oh, Shippou. Your Uncle has been searching for you all this time. You can't just turn your back on your Family, can you?" Kagome snuggled the kitsune close. Shippou sniffled and held his head high.
"But Kagome, you are my Family."
After much persuasion, Shippou was the next to say goodbye.
Inuyasha didn't say goodbye to any of them. He stayed alone, hidden in the roots of Goshinkobu. He had a lot on his mind. Mostly Kagome and their fate.
"Inuyasha." Kagome smiled sweetly. "If you let me go home for a few days, I'll bring you lots of Ramen."
The hanyou scoffed, but that was the only response the young miko got. Kagome smiled and left with a promise to return. She really did love the half demon. Kagome found herself at the well moments later. She gazed up into the sky and took a deep breath of the fresh air. She adored the Feudal Era and couldn't wait to tell Inuyasha her real reason for going home. She was saying goodbye to her old life for good, when she returned she intended to give Inuyasha the fully restored sacred jewel and close the well forever. She chose Inuyasha. Just as Kagome was about to leap into the dark depths Inuyasha grabbed her hand to stop her. Kagome turned and smiled.
"I knew you would give me trouble." Kagome laughed. "I told you I'll be back."
Inuyasha didn't respond and Kagome could see the moisture of tears behind the golden surface.
"Inuyasha?" Kagome asked puzzled.
Inuyasha stepped forward and in an instant pressed his lips against the surprised miko's. Kagome instantly fell into the desprate show of affection. She shot open her eyes when she felt the pure jewel snatched from her neck. Kagome jumped back in shock.
"I love you Kagome. Please be safe." Inuyasha whispered.
Before she could respond, Kagome found herself being shoved into the well. The last thing Kagome saw before the magic swallowed her was Inuyasha tear stained face.
Inuyasha never said goodbye.
Kagome stood with a shovel at the edge of the well. For over a year she has studied the macabre. She searched through old shrine scrolls and tried every magical incantation to try to open the well. This was just another desperate attempt to return to her hanyou. At first Kagome was shocked that Inuyasha would just steal the jewel and push her away. Then she was pissed. She promised herself she would sit him to America if she ever found a way to get back. Then she was in denial fooling herself into believing Inuyasha would return and drag her back. Then Kagome was overwracked by despair. She wouldn't sleep and lost much weight from her lack of eating she even attempted suicide, stating in her final letter that without the Feudal era and Inuyasha her purpose for being was non existant. She spent a week in the hospital after that, that's when she dived into to research of time. She would get back to Inuyasha if it took her entire life. Kagome began digging and didn't hear her Mother, which whom Kagome had distanced herself from emotionally, enter. The older woman sat on the edge of the well with her back to her daughter. Kagome looked up for a moment then continued her task.
"The day before you returned home to us." Kagome's mother began. "He came here." In between digging, Kagome's ears perked up. "I was worried, when he came back without you. He told me you were safe and that he couldn't stay long so he could make sure you stay that way, safe. He told me your group had defeated Naraku and that you had lost your friend in the process. I'm sorry about Sango. He also made me swear not to tell you his intentions. But seeing you like this, so desperate for the truth. So hurt by his actions, I'm afraid I must break my promise." The gentle woman felt tears on her cheek and the silence from the bottom of the well told her she had her daughter's full attention.
"As long as the Shikon no Tama existed, as long as your were it's keeper...you would never be safe. Not ever. He loved you more than anything and if you were hurt he would never be able to forgive himself. He chose your life over his love." Kagome's mother sniffed. "All Inuyasha ever wanted was you."
The older woman heard the shovel drop to the ground and the following silence. Kagome's search was over. The truth was there the entire time.
Twenty four year old Higurashi Kagome graduated with honors from the University of Tokyo. She was still single and lived on the Shrine with her Mother. Her younger brother lived on his own at the dorms of his college. And her Jiji had passed away some years before. Kagome hardly ever thought of her past life now. She was far to busy teaching at a first year school. She loved children and someday hoped for her own. But Kagome never became involved with anyone after Inuyasha. Her Mother urged Kagome to date but the former miko didn't have the heart. Even after her permenant return home, Hojou had long given up on winning the girl's heart.
Kagome was lost in thought, wondering about students activities for tomorrow when she bumped right into a tall and hard bodied male.
"Oh my gosh!" Kagome cried embaressed as she watched the man's papers fall from his arms. She frantically repeated a full list of apologies as she assist the man in cleaning the mess.
"Don't worry about it, Miss." The the man laughed in a smooth baritone voice that made Kagome instantly look up. The man's eyes were mesmerizing. They were a sparkling electric blue and Kagome had the feeling she had saw them somewhere before. She studied his tanned square face and the long ebony mess tied high on his head.
"Kou-Kouga!" Kagome stammered. She never thought she would ever see anyone from her past again. She instantly pulled him into a tight embrace. "Oh wow! You couldn't believe how much I actually wanted to see you again." The exicted girl laughed. The man coughed and searched for much needed oxygen.
"Um, I think you have me mistaken for someone else." The man said heartily.
Kagome swallowed hard and slowly backed away. She stared at him again for a long moment. This man wasn't a demon, he was one hundred percent human. Now she could see the small differences in this man's features from that of her old friend. Kagome gasped and her face turned bright red. She stumbled over another apology and quickly turned tail and ran as fast as she could, leaving the befuddled man to the task of retreiving his papers on his own. Before the man turned to the opposite direction he noticed a small black object on the ground. He picked it up, opened it and smiled a toothy grin.
Kagome was aimlessy channel surfing when there came a ring at the door.
"Kagome dear, could you get that. Your Brother probably forgot his key again!" Kagome's mother called from the kitchen.
Kagome sighed and lazily stood to open the door. Chocolate eyes met electric blue and Kagome gasped.
"Do you believe in fate, Miss Higurashi?" The man said as he offered the girl her missing wallet.
Kagome blushed and smiled. She slowly took the wallet and said with a small, shy voice, "yes, as a matter of fact I do."
The man Kagome came to know as Ookami Youryuu sat across from her in the small resturant. Ever sice he returned her wallet and she invited him in for dinner they have been inseperable. Youryuu was an historian, he was obsessed over the time before the edo period, where it was said that demons ruled the land. He told Kagome of the time when he was young and his Great Grandfather laid on his death bed, he told her that his Great Grandfather would stay up all night and tell him of stories of their family and how they were desendents of a wolf clan. Kagome became drawn into his imagination and fell deeper for him over the passing weeks that soon turned into months and before Kagome could blink she slept besides him every night. Souta, who had graduated with a Phd. Bought his Mother a home in the country and Kagome became the new care giver of the shrine grounds with Youryuu by her side. Time passed quickly and once again the shrine was filled with the sounds of laughing children. Kagome made a great Mother.
It was a day like any other when Kagome had to face the most difficult decision of her life. If she would have known of the difficult challege that awaited her that morning she wouldn't have opened the shrine to visitors that particular day. But then, she would have never met him either.
The man came often and just stood by the tree of ages. His dark eyes drawn to the swaying braches. Kagome noticed that he always seemed tempted to step over the ofudas and reach out to the trunk that was now overgrown with thick vines that crawled their way into the large branches. But he never complete his journey as if pushed away. He would always look so sad and walk away. Kagome didn't really notice anything particular about this man. He was pretty average in fact. He wore a black business suit with a red silk tie. His dark brown hair was cut short and his dark eyes never betrayed what he was feeling. Whenever Youryuu would go out to greet him, the man would take another long look and the old tree and excuse himself. Then on that particular day after repairing a part of the shrine Kagome reopened the grounds after being closed for almost a month. The man was back at the same time he always came and stood in front of the tree. It was on this particular day that Kagome decided to offer the man some tea. Hopefully he would tell her the reasons for his longing gaze.
Youryuu was away on buisness and Kagome was alone, except for her three children and of course that same man. This time when he was greeted he didn't simply dismiss himself. He stood and looked deeply into the woman's eyes.
"Hello, welcome to the Sunset Shrine. Would you like a cup of tea?"
"Thank you, Ma'am. You are very kind." The man politely bowed and took the warm cup from Kagome's hand. She didn't flinch when she felt the magic tingle at her fingers when he brushed his hand against hers. Kagome looked up with a warm smile and decided to let it go.
"You come here so often, do you know about the history of this sacred tree?" Kagome asked.
"When I was very young, my Father would bring me here all the time. Things were so much more different then. My Mother still lived, And people still believed in the impossible, and that well was open to the world." The man smiled.
Kagome was confused that well shrine had been there long before she was born. This man was nowhere near older than herself.
"Are you sure you are at the right place? That shrine has stood for almost 400 years." Kagome said sweetly.
"I am most definately at the right place, Kagome." The man smiled handsomely.
Kagome didn't remember telling him her name.
My parents lived in a time were the were vast feilds and this tree wasn't so thick. In a time were youkai roamed freely amongst the human race.
Kagome secretly wondered if she accidently put warmed sake in his tea instead of water. The man laughed at her confused expression.
"Come now, you are a smart woman, or have the stories my parents told me false." Kagome fumed at this steatment.
"Hey! How dare you!" Kagome shouted angrily.
"Well, well. At least they were accurate about your hot temper." The man chuckled. "Please accept my apologies. Allow me to introduced myself. My name is Inuyasha, Higurashi Inuyasha."
Kagome's eyes widened in shock. Her hands were shaking as she took a step back. "Inu...Yasha?" She managed to choke out.
"Yes, my Father took the names of my grandparents and gave them to me."
"Who..." Kagome swallowed hard. "Who is your Father?"
The man's smile widened and Kagome saw a flash of green in his eyes.
He turned away without answering. "You and he are the only family I have left." The man stepped forward and raised his hands to the tree. "And from what I heard he was the only man you ever loved." He sounded hopeful as he seemed to struggle against something but managed to push through. "Forgive me for handing you this burden, but it took me so long to find you."
Kagome watched in horror as the man's blunt fingers turned to claws and he gripped the vines firmly. When he finally pulled apart the vines, Kagome dropped her tea in shock. She placed her hands over her mouth and nearly retched. Instead she cried. All this time she searched for a way to find him and here he was completely unchanged. Sleeping with a look of peace. Around his neck were not only the beads of subjugation but the fully restored Shikon no Tama. It encased him in a protective barrier so no one could detect the slumbering hanyou's form. Kagome continued to back away until a hand caught her.
"Only you can awake him. He has waitied so long for you. It's time." The man said.
Kagome didn't hesitate. Immediately she stepped forward. There was the young flutter in her heart again and Kagome smiled a warm and loving smile.
"Inu..." She bagan as she reached for his fluffy silver ears.
"Mama?" A young voice called out.
Kagome instinctively jerked her hand away. The older woman turned to face your youngest daughter who was only two and just awoken from a long nap. Kagome took a step back, never taking her eyes from Inuyasha's sleeping face. As if sensing her decision, the Shikon no Tama erected it's barrier once more and the old vines of Goshikubo crawled it's way into the dark branches once more shielding the hanyou from the living world. Kagome wiped away a tear and picked up her youngest child.
"Sango-chan! What are you doing up so early?" Kagome smiled.
The girl ignored the question. "Mama? What was that?" Sango asked with childish curiosity.
Kagome began walking back to the house, her child in tow. "That was only a dream." Kagome said in a hushed tone. Kagome paused and looked back at the man. He stood alone besides the tree, gazing at her with a longful expression. "Only a dream." She whispered once more before she disappeared into her family home.
The man sighed and look back at the restored tree and smiled softly. "Just a dream, huh?" Then in a flash of blue smoke, the man was gone.
A/N: I was thinking of making this a two shot. I have a whole full ending in mind. Let me know if you wish for me to continue. Thanks!
