Using the dark of the night to cover them Kitsu and Omiko moved back to Omikos hut to finally find some sleep. They entered and soon collapsed on the bed. Holding each other in the arms they drifted to sleep, not aware of the great danger coming from the forest.

Sakura was still searching for her sister when she felt a strong evil presence coming from the forest. She moved carefully towards it, but an arrow flew out of the forest and hit her in the chest. She collapsed to the ground. The one who attacked her stepped out from behind the trees. It was a wolf youkai. As soon as he saw Sakura lying on the ground he howled low and more wolfs emerged from the forest. They started attacking the village, destroying huts and killing the people.

Kitsu woke up from the death screams of some villagers. He jumped out of the bed and ran to the door. He opened it and what he saw outside made his stomach twitch. Several corpses lay on the ground, torn into bloody peaces of meat. And wolfs everywhere. Omiko stepped beside him and gasped.

"Omiko stay back. It's dangerous."

Just after he said that Omiko saw the blood covered body of her sister lying on the ground.

"SAKURA!!!!" ,she screamed and ran past Kitsu. He followed her close behind. As Omiko reached her sister she kneeled down beside her head and checked for any live signs. And she was lucky. Her sister was breathing, lowly but steady. But the wolfs had seen her approaching the wounded miko and now they started to attack.

Kitsu looked around, his claws ready and his fangs bared. I will defend Omiko at all costs. Even if I die. She must survive. He attacked the nearest wolf and killed him easily. He moved on attacking the wolfs coming to close to his mate. But soon his strength drained and his guard came down. Some wolfs landed a blow to his chest or head. He soon bled almost everywhere, but he continued to fight. Just as he thought he would finally be defeated he saw some of the villagers attack the wolfs with katana and other human weapons. They managed to kill the rest of the wolfs and Kitsu moved his badly wounded body to his mate. She hugged him and his blood soaked her clothes.

"Oh Kitsu… " ,she cried.

"Shh. Everything is all right. The wolfs are dead and I will survive my wounds."

"But my sister. She's badly hurt. The arrow pierced her hearth. She is dying."

Kitsu let go of his mate and kneeled by the fallen miko. Her live force is almost drained. He laid his paw on Sakuras head and closed his eyes. His paw began glowing in a bright white light and Sakuras wound began to close itself at a very fast pace. But as her wound has finally disappeared Kitsu fell unconscious from the great loss of power. At this moment Sakura awoke and looked at the kitsune lying at her side and at her younger sister trying to wake him up.

"What happened? The only thing I remember is that I was hit by an arrow."

"You were close to death. But Kitsu defended us from the wolfs attacking the village and despite the fact that he was badly wounded he healed you."

Sakura gasped.

"He healed me? But why?"

"I don't know and I don't care. Help me to carry him to my hut. I need to treat his wounds or he will surely die."

Sakura looked puzzled at her sister.

"Why do you care so much about that demon?"

Omiko looked at her with a very serious face.

"Cause he's my mate."

"He is WHAT?"

"You heard me. Now help me. You owe him this."
With a little hesitation Sakura helped her sister to carry Kitsu into her hut and helped bandaging his wounds.

"Now we have to wait. Only time will tell if he'll survive" ,Sakura said.
