The Next Generation

Prologue

After Sesshomaru had taken Koichi, Sango had refused to walk. Miroku had to hire a horse, and she lay slung across it as if dead on the entire trip home. She refused to eat or drink, and Miroku had to force water down her throat to keep her alive.

Kagome and InuYasha heard the sound of a horse approaching. They went to the door, and were stunned by what they saw.

“Is she dead?” asked InuYasha, as Kagome went running up to the lifeless looking demon slayer.

“No,” said Miroku, “but she wants to die. Sesshomaru is keeping Koichi to raise himself.”

Kagome gasped, her eyes filling with tears as she reached out to touch her friend.

Sango cracked her eyes open, and the look of hopelessness in them made Kagome break down in sobs as she tried to put her arms around her.

InuYasha growled in anger, his eyes flashing and fangs bared

“I told you Koichi would be better off if Sesshomaru was dead!” he said, “I should go kill him now and make sure he stays dead!”

“No InuYasha,' said Miroku, “as long as he has Koichi, we can't do anything that might endanger the child.”

“FEH!” said InuYasha in anguish and frustration and leapt away.

Miroku gently detached Kagome from Sango, and pulled the demon slayer off the horse.

“You better go see if you can find InuYasha,” said the monk, “I don't like the state he is in right now.”

“You're right,” said Kagome through her sobs, and turned to run after her lover.

It was hard for Kagome to call for him. Her voice was hoarse from her crying. Eventually she spotted a glimpse of bright red on a tree branch.

“Please InuYasha,” she said, “come down.”

There was a rustling in the branches.

“No,” came the muffled reply.

“Oh, I know you are as upset as I am about this,” she said, “please come down, I need you right now, and so does Sango.”

She heard a gasp and a big sigh Then InuYasha leapt out of the tree and was standing before her.

His eyes were filled with pain and his cheeks tear streaked. Kagome was deeply affected by his countenance. She broke out in fresh sobs, and through her arms around him. He put his arms around her, holding her tight, and she could feel his chest shaking as he buried his face on her shoulder and cried.

Eventually they pulled themselves together and decided they were ready to return to the house. They had to be strong for Sango. They had to help her find reasons to live.

Chapter 1: Seventeen Years Later

Fathers and Sons

Koichi sat on a bench in the garden, picking up the round, smooth stones that decorated the ground and throwing them angrily into the ornamental pool. His face still stung where his father had slapped him, and his mind rang with all the things he longed to say to him. How dare he treat me like a child! He thought. I am a man now, and he can't get away with this anymore. At seventeen, he no longer looked like a child. He had grown tall, with broad shoulders like his father, Sesshomaru. His hair was long and silvery white, and he wore it in a ponytail down his back. But his two triangular dog ears were his constant reminder that he was not a full demon like his father. Moody dark gold eyes stared at nothing in particular as he replayed his confrontation with his father. It had been over his desire to leave his fathers domain, instead of always being left behind. He had never seen what lay beyond, and never told why he could not leave. As he cocked his arm to throw another stone, two familiar, feminine feet appeared in front of him.

“Why must you continue to disobey your father?” said Rin in exasperation.

He sighed and looked up at her petulantly.

“Why must I continue to obey my father?” he retorted, “I'm old enough to make decisions for myself.”

“You will always be just a cub to me,” said Rin affectionately, ruffling his hair.
Koichi would not be mollified. Rin was the only mother figure he could remember, but she was only about ten years older than he was.

“He keeps me a virtual prisoner,” he grumbled, “and he won't tell me anything about the outside world or my past.”

“The world outside is a harsh place,” Rin said seriously, “Don't kid yourself that you are being denied some great adventure.”

“But he never will give me straight answers!” he said angrily, and stood up, pacing in front of her. “And how come he won't tell me why I am only a half demon, or who my mother is?”

Rin sighed.

“He has his reasons,” she said quietly.

“That's not good enough anymore!” he growled, turning to look at her.

Rins expression was subdued and a bit sad.

“Okay Koichi,” she said finally, “if you promise not to tell your father, I will tell you what I know about your mother.”

“I promise!” he said quickly, surprised that she would go against the Lords orders for him, but eager to hear what she had to say.

“Her name was Sango, she was a demon slayer, and she traveled with a monk named Miroku.”

Slowly Koichi sat back down on the bench, absorbing the information he had been given. Rin suddenly took his face between her small, human hands.

“I've told you all I know, because I love you,” she said, making him look her in the eye. “But remember that I love your father too, and really want you to stop making him angry.”

“Okay,” he said.

I'll stop making him angry alright, he thought. If I am not here, I can't make him angry at me with by my constant challenging of his rules. And this time when he left, he would make good his escape. He had something to go on now. Out there was his real mother, Sango, the demon slayer, and he would find her.
