The Pains of Happiness

Chapter Three
>>>Forgetful Memories-Part 2<<<

Kagome wandered the halls, deep in her thoughts of exasperation. Inuyasha had made her so mad she couldn’t even get through mythology class without thinking about those accursed detentions. ‘How could this happen?!’ She thought to herself. ‘My week was going so good too.’ But then unfortunate things always seemed to be happening to her. At that thought Kagome’s fury quickly dissipated and was replaced with a great feeling of remorse.
She pushed the feeling aside and turned a corner to get to her locker. It was then that Kagome saw her. Her with her long midnight hair, her pale brown eyes and even paler skin. She was the embodiment of beauty. The perfect girl, and Kagome hated her. ‘Kikyo.’ Even with just the thought of her name Kagome was overcome with a new wave of hatred. It was because of her, the girl every one adored, that her life had went so terribly wrong. Because of her that Kagome’s father left and destroyed her family.

flashback

She wasn’t supposed to be listening. They had sent her to bed. They didn’t want her to hear them fighting. But she always did. She always snuck down from her room and sat quietly on the steps. Fearfully listening to her parents heated contentions.
“Why are you doing this?” Kagome’s mother asked. Kagome could tell by the strain in her mother’s voice that she was on the verge of tears. Kagome’s face sadden deeply. She hated it when her mother cried, she hated it even worse when her father was the cause of her those tears. “What about our family?” Kagome’s mother began to yell. “What about our daughter! Do you not care about us anymore?! And what about the baby! What about our son!” Kagome’s mother was in her third trimester of the pregnancy. She had let her father talk her into finding out if the baby was a boy or a girl, but she refused to name him before he was born. ‘How can you name him if you haven’t held him in your arms, seen his eyes, seen his smile..’ She had said that to Kagome not so long ago.
“Kohana I have a new family now, and they need me more. Kagura needs me more.” Kagome’s father’s voice was calm and controlled, as it always was.
“You would leave you own wife to be with your mistress...” Kohana’s voice was quiet. Barely above a whisper.
“I’m sorry Koha–“
“Don’t, don’t apologize. Just go.”
“Kohana listen to me please, be reasonable.”
“Just go! Get out of my house! Get out!”

end flashback

That night Kagome’s father left. Left to be with his new wife and child and left her all alone.
“Kagome?” A hand gingerly touched her shoulder. Kagome turned to see the concerned face of Sango. Kagome had been so wrapped up in her thoughts of the past she hadn’t realized she was just idly standing in the middle of the hall. She smiled to reassure her friend.
“Sorry. Haha just thinking was all.”
Sango looked at her perplexed. Then followed her friend to her locker. Kagome reached her locker, put in the combination code for her lock and switched out her mythology books for her calculous one.
“Hey Kagome could yo–“
“I’ll give you heads up on what we’re doing in class today.” She smiled at her friend and shut the locker. Sango didn’t share the same calculous class with Kagome, instead she had it later on in the day. So Kagome would always give her friend a heads up if they had a pop quiz or something.
“Thanks.” Sango said as she backed away from her friend. “I gotta get to class, I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.” Kagome waved a goodby to Sango, then books in hand headed toward room 103 calculous.
