The Place Between the Inbetween
Chapter One
The palace was beautiful. White stone made the red rose bushes by the entrance stand out considerably well.
"So this is the Sheentai kingdom. Aunt Yuki was right about Queen Rin sprucing things up with flowers and stuff. I wonder if I'll make the squad…" Kagome Kenzai slowly padded up to the large entrance door.
She had heard of the squad Queen Rin was organizing to help the city's females how to defend themselves if they ever were attacked or something like that. Kagome had learned how to use the bow at an early age, by one of her aunt's close friends. She called him Sempai. He had taken the time to carve her a bow out of a strong oak tree, and had put designs in it just for her. She sighed, remembering. There had been a coil of ivy on each side of the bow, with flowers in between, finally meeting in the middle where her hand gripped and aligned the arrow.
Kagome glanced down at the bow she was clutching. It was the same one that he had carved many years ago. She had thought that she would outgrow it, but Sempai had told her his secret: he had had magic with wood and trees and plants. He could make them grow, of kill off weeds in a garden to allow other plants to flourish. He had used his magic on the bow, to allow it to grow as she did, so she would never have to get a new one. Kagome loved him forever after that. Sempai had always said that she had had a knack for shooting, but was just never given the chance.
Shaking her head, the girl continued to trot up the stairs to the entrance. However, a guard stopped her.
"Halt!" he cried. She stopped. She smiled politely and bowed to him.
"Excuse me sir, but I am here for an interview with Her Highness, Queen Rin. I am trying to join her fighting squad, you see," Kagome said. He instantly nodded and moved to the
side to let her in.
"You may enter!" he said loudly. She thanked him by bowing her head, and entered the great castle. She was immediately awed by its great shape and size. Her blue eyes took in the sight of the throne room and dining hall instantly. The two were combined, and she found herself staring at many people eating.
A young woman caught her eye. She was tall, dressed in black breeches and khaki shirt, and her black hair was tied in a high ponytail. The long, black locks were not so easily tamed, and fought to get out of their tie-down. The other woman caught Kagome staring and swiftly walked over.
"Hello! You're new here, aren't you? Trying to find a good man at court?" she asked, magenta eyes twinkling. Kagome quickly shook her head, smiling, and bowed.
"No, I am here for an interview with Queen Rin, for the fighting squad. I was hoping-" she was interrupted by the other woman.
"Ah! So you're the girl she's been expecting, eh? I'm Sango, second in command for the squad. You look like you need some practice, though." She glanced at the bow in the younger girl's hand. "On the other hand, maybe you won't. Come on in. Miroku was getting more lecher-like than usual. If that's possible," Sango insisted. Without waiting for an answer, she pulled Kagome toward the group she had just left.
"Hey guys, this is Kagome Kenzai, the girl Rin was raving about. This is Miroku the lecherous monk, and Prince Inuyasha. Say hello, Kagome!" Sango said, prodding her.
She shyly muttered a "hello".
One of the men facing her just smiled warmly while the other looked away. The one who refused to meet her gaze had long, silvery hair. He was wearing a red haori and was in really good shape. Not huge, bulging muscles, but she bet that his torso was lean and taunt; a tanned body under the crimson cloth. Amber eyes stared at something in the distance. Kagome couldn't believe that someone could have such beautiful eyes be so rude. Perhaps I'm judging hum to hard. This is the first time we've ever met, after all. She suddenly had the urge to touch the white dog ears on his head.
Shaking her head, she turned to the other man. He was wearing black robes, and a staff possessed his left hand. His right was covered with a silky fabric, with rosary beads holding it in place. His short hair was tied in the back, a few bangs framing his face. His violet eyes showed warmth and a few degrees of lust, which didn't faze Kagome. She knew that there were some perverts out there, and she had a feeling she had met one of them.
As soon as he felt her eyes move off him, Inuyasha stared at her from the corner of his eye. She had long, wavy ebony tresses, and azure eyes that took in everything. Her brown breeches fit smoothly against her legs, and wore well-worn black shoes. His gaze traveled upward, not excluding her chest. He found that her face was intriguing to him. Her soft mouth was full, chin stubborn, and a gentle face overall. Feh, he thought as he switched his gaze over to another person. She won't bother me that much. I'll be sure to scare the hell out of her once Sango and Miroku leave. Not that I want to be alone with the wench.
"Alrighty then, since we have made the proper introductions, I will now show Kagome to her room. Come on!" Sango announced and without warning, pulled Kagome away from the males. The older woman led her through twists and turns until they reached a small room at the end of a hallway.
"This is where we are staying, so make yourself at home!" Sango told her. She went on to explain about the castle:
"Though big, the castle had only enough room for a limited number of people. So the new servants, guests, and whomever had to share with another person." Sango didn't think that Kagome would mind sharing with her. At least she hoped not. Otherwise, she would have to share with what seemed like her twin: Kikyo. Sango shook her head inwardly. No, she didn't think that her new friend would like that at all. Sure, Kikyo could be nice sometimes, but most of the time she was cold and hard as stone, with a face that was impossible to read. So she skipped that part, knowing that Kagome will eventually meet her `twin', and it would be interesting.
Tomorrow, she would learn her way around the castle.
