Evening was settling upon the Sengoku Jidai, blanketing the stray demon slayer boy from the view of Sango and Kagura. It was like he had disappeared without a trace. Sango's face was grim, as she rode on the feather with Kagura. Morbid thoughts played through her mind, making her heart ache with a dull throb.
“I know you won't be much use in our search soon,” Kagura said. “It's getting dark, so we might as well call it a night.”
The demon slayer wanted to throw a biting retort at her companion, but she knew Kagura was right. Still, the wind sorceress's snide remark rankled. Slowly the feather came down in a meadow, the sounds of crickets rising up to meet them. They dismounted and with a flourish, the feather was tucked back into Kagura's hair.
“We should make camp,” Kagura said. “Are you hungry?”
The clenching of anxiety in Sango's gut battled any appetite she had. So she just shrugged and looked around the meadow for the best, most defensible place to settle for the night. She began stalking around the tall grass, and Kagura watched her a moment before pursing her lips and following her.
“This is as good a place as any,” Sango finally said, rubbing her arms. “It's getting cool, we will need a fire.”
The wind sorceress glanced around her a moment, and then whipped out her fan. It came down with a short, hard movement, and sticks flew up out of the grass - flying directly at Sango. The demon slayer put up her arms to deflect them but she was too late. With a giggle, Kagura walked over and began pulling debris out of Sango's hair.
“Why did you have to do that?” Sango exclaimed.
“Fastest way to collect kindling,” Kagura replied.
Sango snorted.
