The rays of light were shining through the trees, and I looked up at the sky. It has been raining all day, and I was glad I didn't have to walk in it anymore. I shook my hair to shake some of the water off, and kept walking along the path to Kaede's village. I have medium length brown hair that barely reached down to my brown eyes. I have brown pants that look worn out, because of all the demons I fight. I wear a white shirt with a necklace that shows the symbol of a cross. On my back attached to a black leather strap is a heavyblade that I had just finished polishing. It's bound to a strap with a red lace that acts as a sheath. I have just heard rumors of a half demon that had been bound to the Sacred Tree, and has been there for 50 years now. I couldn't help but wonder who could have the sort of power to subdue a demon for so long. Of course the person who sealed him must either be dead of old age or an old woman by now. I shook my head. “Ah, I can't worry myself about these things; I have to get money for food!” My stomach growled again. I haven't eaten for a day now. My job has been very slow lately. I hope I can find Kaede's Village soon, I got to get a demon-slaying job there or I'm done for!

 

Suddenly I heard footsteps running towards his direction. I quickly jumped up into a tree and waited for whoever was following me to appear. I peeked out from the branch and saw a woman with strange looking garments on. Perhaps it is some type of ritual clothing? But what is a woman doing out here in the dangerous woods alone? I just looked at her, and she sat on the ground at the base of the tree and started to cry. I just watched afraid to confront her…she looked kinda…I could tell my face was blushing, and I tried to shake it off and focus on this peculiar girl. Suddenly she shouted out, “Stupid Inuyasha!” I was shocked when I heard her say those words. Was it that half-demon I was hearing about?!? What luck, this is my chance for a job! The pay must be good! I climbed on the branch over the girl, hesitating to confront her, when all of a sudden, the branch snapped, and I crashed down to the ground behind her. She turned around hurriedly. “EEEK!!!” I struggled to get up and regain my composure. “I, uh, hello!” What an embarrassing fall! She looked at me strangely and said, “Who are you?” Focus Maikeru, focus. That's what I kept telling myself. “My name's Maikeru Hitogiri and I understand you have a problem with demons. I am a demon slayer, at your service!”

 

She still looked at me in the same way. “A demon slayer, huh? Were you watching me that whole time?” Does she think I'm stalking her? “I, uh, was on my way to Kaede's village, and I was just, um, looking for something in the tree, and that's when you showed up.” Great Maikeru, you sound completely stupid with a girl again! She giggeled. “Hehe, you look kinda cute when you blush!” I could feel the redness return in my face, I had to change the subject quickly. “W-well anyways, are you being chased by Inuyasha, the one that is supposed to be sealed to the Sacred Tree?” “Well, he isn't sealed to it anymore…he's the reason I was crying…” I may actually get to eat tonight! “I'll take care of him, don't you worry, miss! This is your lucky day!” She puts her hands up as if she was trying to reason with me. “I think you have a misunderstanding, Inuyasha and I—” Just then a figure appeared behind me. I turned around and saw he was wearing that same red garment I was told about—the Robe of the Fire Rat. I also saw his ears, fangs, and sharp nails. He was definitely the one—the one they call Inuyasha! He looked at Kagome. “What are you doing here? And who is that guy?”

 

I smirked. I knew this would be a difficult battle, and I was looking forward to it. “Back off, demon! You will cause this girl no more harm!” I took out my heavy blade and pointed it at him. The girl spoke up. “No, he's not the bad guy!” “Don't worry miss, he must be brainwashing you to his will, I will handle it, stand back.” Inuyasha still did not look prepared for battle. “What are you babbling about?!?” “Fight me, Inuyasha! I have no time for your mind games; I will put you in your place!” He raised his hand and cracked his knuckles. “If it's a fight you want, it's a fight you'll get!” The girl tried to get in between us. What was she doing?!? “Don't fight each other you guys!” Inuyasha looked annoyed. “Get out of our way, Kagome!” So her name is Kagome… “Please, do as it says…” “Hey, who are you calling an IT?!?” “Who do you think I'm calling an it, you filthy demon!” With that I ran towards Kagome, and she pulled back and thought I was going to run into her and let out a small shriek, but I jumped over her and raised my blade high in the air to do a downward slash at Inuyasha. Just before the hit connected, Inuyasha moved out of the way, and I cut off a few strands of his hair. He looked at me and raised his hand. “Now I got you!” He lunged his hand at my side, and managed to land a small wound on my side as I tried to dodge it. Kagome yelled, “Stop it, Inuyasha!” and he seemed to ignore it. I furthered my distance from him, making sure to avoid his range of attack. He was extremely skilled in battle, and my hunger was starting to get to me…Inuyasha looked at Kagome again. “Shaddup! I'm trying to fight here!” Why are they fighting amongst themselves? But I had no time to contemplate, this was my chance for a critical strike, so I jumped into action running as fast as I could towards Inuyasha and I slashed a good hit in his side, making him stumble away. He looked angry now. “Now you pissed me off!” He raised up his hand again, but this time, it was like smoke was coming for it, or were they… spirits? I backed off from him and he said, “Iron reaper—” Kagome cut his chant off when she yelled the words, “Sit boy!” And as soon as she said those peculiar words, Inuyasha slammed to the ground and his eyes were swirly. I was impressed by this woman, I didn't expect her to end that fight! I watched as she ran over to me. “Are you alright?” “Huh?” I just now noticed that I was bleeding profusely from my wound and everything started to get dizzy.

 

-5 minutes later-

 

“I don't understand.” I finally said. “I thought Inuyasha was after you.” She was addressing my wounds, bandaging them up. I had never had a girl close to my age touch me, but I tried to keep my mind off that when I heard Kagome speak again. “Inuyasha is the good guy now, all thanks to the help of Kaede.” I looked back at Inuyasha who was crossing his arms and looking at me, and he said, “You shouldn't have tried to fight me.” I narrowed my eyes at Inuyasha. “I don't trust any demons. Even if they are half-demon, they are all the same.” Inuyasha seemed to get mad and looked another way. “Pshh, whatever.” I haven't noticed before, but Kagome's hair smelled good. What does she wash her hair in? I had to know more about this mysterious woman, but my stomach had other things in mind, and it let out a loud, agitated grumble. Kagome looked up at me. “You hungry? I have some food in my backpack.” “I cannot accept it. I haven't done anything to deserve it.” “It's o.k., just eat this.” She dug in her odd looking bag and took out something wrapped in some sort of shiny substance. She unwrapped it and I saw that it held rice balls…so hungry…can't refuse! “O-only if you insist.” I took the food from her hand gracefully and jammed them in my mouth. It was the best food I had in a while! She kept offering me food and I ate and ate and ate. She looked at me and giggled. “Wow, you must be hungry! How do you stay that skinny?” I took my last gulp of food. “I was just starving, that's all.” Was she observing me? I tried to fight back my blushing again. She looked at me in concern. “Are you sure you'll be alright with that wound? You're not a half-demon like Inuyasha.” “I'll be fine.” I hate it when I get injured. That means I'm out of work, and when that happens, I have to look for my own food. Now that my stomach was satisfied though, I decided to question Kagome. “Are those garments you are wearing part of some ritual.” She laughed. “No, it's my school uniform.” “I…see…” I had no idea what a school was, but I liked the clothing nonetheless. “I have to repay you for your kindness, Kagome. Allow me to fight for you. I will be your personal bodyguard. I would hate for this half-demon to turn on you.” “Really, Maikeru?” She looked at Inuyasha. “Now we could get some help, Inuyasha!” He looked down at the ground still crossing his arms. “Hmph.”
