CHAPTER ONE
"Lord Sesshomaru where are headed?" squeaked an annoying green toad demon.
"None of your business Jaken! Now shut up!!" replied his master.
"Sorry sir" was his defeated answer.
Sesshomaru held his gaze steadfast. His face showed no emotion whatsoever, while he paraded in the caravan of demons. His father, Lord Inutaisho was at the head flanked by his top warriors. Sesshomaru followed his father, with Jaken at his heels, and his half-witted, half-demon, half-brother InuYasha followed him. Behind them were about twenty-five warriors and a few straggler servents. Sesshomaru drew in a deep breath, they had just sent the continent's army running for the hills.
War had been officallydeclared over with the western lands as the victor. The lord, his two sons, and their remaining warriors were now heading towards a retreat to recopurate before heading back to the palace. The retreat was located on the southern most tip of their lands. It was a retreat run by humans that have passed down thru many generations, but the people were good - as far as humans go. It had been six-teen years since Sesshomaru had last been at the retreat, but no matter how much time went by he would never forget it.
****flashback****
"Come on Sesshomaru lets go fight!" eclaimed the overly excited ningen boy.
"Alright Miroku" replied the young demon lord.
"Not so fast children!" interupted a concerned mother.
"What is it now Mother?" asked Miroku.
"You will have to watch the little ones" replied the mother.
"But Mother we are going to practice!" Miroku whined.
"So?" asked the mother, a bit annoyed.
"So? How can we practice while watching the little ones?" Miroku again whined.
"I do not want to hear another protest or I will get your father to whip you!" she warned.
"Yes ma'am, I'm sorry" he whispered feeling defeated.
"Good! Now run along" she replied while walking away.
"Wow Miroku is your mother always like that?" asked the young lord.
"Sometimes" Miroku answered.
"Why doesn't a wet nurse watch the young ones?" asked an ever bored Sesshomaru.
"Because we don't have one" was the reply.
"Oh" was all the demon could say.
"Well" began Miroku "I'll go and get my cousin and you'll go get your brother and we'll meet by the sacred tree."
Sesshomaru studied his friend for a moment "hai" was his reply.
"Sesshomaru what in the seven hells took you so long?" yelled Miroku.
Sesshomaru just stared at his friend with a bored expression "I had to bribe this little imp to get him to leave the house.
Miroku stared at his friend's younger brother for a few moments. After mentally shaking his head he turned to the demon lord "Alright then let's get started."
Sesshomaru looked at his friend then the surrounding area, "Wait, where is your cousin?"
Miroku looked at his friend and then turned to a small blanket under the tree "She's right there" he answered nonchalantly.
Sesshomaru seemed to study the blanket for a moment. He seemed a bit confused and looked at his friend, "Your cousin is an infant?" it was meant as a question but came out more like a statement.
Miroku looked at his friend and started to laugh "Kagome's two years old, hardly an infant, but she's asleep and poses no problems for us."
Sesshomaru looked at Miroku, then at the sleeping pup and then at his annoying little half-brother. He mentally sighed and rolled his eyes, he knew that the sleeping pup wasn't a problem but his little half-brother was a whole other story.
Directing his attention to the little imp he commanded "InuYasha, sit on that blanket, watch the sleeping pup, but DO NOT touch her." After watching the half-breed toddle over to the blanket he turned back to Miroku "ok let's get started."
****end flashback****
Sesshomaru inwardly smiled to himself. He would never dare to show how excited he was to go back to the Higurashi Retreat. He was only twelve years old the last time he was there, but over the four months spent ther he and Miroku became best friends. He couldn't wait to see him and what he's been up to. Sesshomaru was knocked out of his daydream when he heard his father called for the caravan to stop. Slowly, but like a domino effect, all of the marching warriors stopped. He waited as his father looked up at the sky and then back to the group of demons awaiting his words. The retreat is another five hours away from here - however - it will be nightfall in only two, so we are to camp here tonight and head out tomorrow at first light." came the command from the great demon lord.
After saying what he needed to say, Lord InuTashio went into a conversation with his top warriors that flanked him. Sesshomaru just stood there glaring at his father. 'How dare he make me wait another day' - his thoughts never quite made it to his mouth. Showing emotion in public was unacceptable, so he just continued to glare at his father until an annoyance interupted his train of 'evil things to do to Father' thought. "Lord Sesshomaru - what is this retreat your father speaks of?" asked the toad. "Leave me alone Jaken" came the iced reply. "B - but...." stammered Jaken. "If you wish to know so bad, then why don't you pester my father!" snapped the young lord. "S - sorry m - my lord" grovelled Jaken. "Hn" was the only reply Sesshomaru offered as he turned his back on the green toad and walked to a nearby tree. He leaned against the trunk and allowed his feet to slide out gracefully from underneath him. He placed his arms around the back of his head and closed his eyes. He wasn't tired - he didn't want to sleep, he just wanted to be left alone.
But that wasn't going to happen anytime soon, because he heard his idiot half-brother trot up next to him and slam himself on the ground (like a child about to throw a tantrum). Lazily Sesshomaru opened on eye - as if to acknowledge the half-twit's existence and then closed it - as if silently telling his younger brother to keep his mouth shut. But Sesshomaru knew his half-brother too well and keeping quiet was not one of InuYasha's strong points. "How dare he make us camp out" complained the young inu "we're not pups - we're warriors, we can travel three hours thru the dark. I mean COME ON we're all demons here. Father is the strongest in the lands, he just proved that by defeating Ryukotsusei's continental army. Sesshomaru let out a deep sight, he hated when the half-wit went off on a tantrum - especially when said half-wit didn't get the obvious reasons behind their father's actions.
Mentally rolling his eyes,he decided to educate his brother "First of all Father did not totally defeat Ryukotsusei, he defeated most of his armies. In order to completely defeat one's enemy you must kill them - not just heir armies but the one and or ones controlling the armies. Yes - for now war has been declared over with us as the victors, but that will not last, and Father knows it. Ryukotsusei will take this time to rebuild his armies - he will make them stronger - as will Father, so next time Ryukotsusei will not survive." Sesshomaru looked InuYasha, it was somewhat amusing watching him think. If Sesshomaru could've he would've laughed. The scowl on InuYasha's face was priceless - apparantly the young inu had a hard time processing so much information at one time.
After a few moments of silence (except for the crickets in the background) InuYasha moved to open his mouth to voice another question, but Sesshomaru beat him to the punch. Raising his hand and a delicate silver brow he glared at his brother "as for why we stopped to camp, Father is a good leader and knows when some of his warriors need to rest, besides the fact that we are going to a retreat run by humans. Humans that father RESPECTS, therefore he would not be so rude as to show up at their door step in the middle of the night." InuYasha tilted his head to the side, pondering the idea of upset half asleep humans, he looked at his older brother and muttered the ever famous "keh". Sesshomaru actually rolled his eyes at his younger brother "go to sleep little brother, we leave at first light."
