Chapter Five

The Shattered Soul

 

Kagome flipped through another file on the youkai named Mystic. Kagome could feel herself going crossed eyed and it was beginning to get on her nerves. They had been looking through these files for the past three hours and still they hadn't really found anything they could go on. Kagome sighed as she pushed the file away.

 

“This is unbelievable! I've looked through five files on his guy and I still don't know anything about him!” Kagome growled as she rubbed her eyes and pushed her chair away from the table.

 

She looked at Sango and almost laughed. She was leaning over a file reading intently. She had her elbows on the table and her hands were fisted into her hair. “Sango are you okay?”

 

Sango jumped slightly. “Damn it Kagome! You're going to give me a heart attack.”

 

Kagome laughed, “I was talking a few minutes ago. I figured that you would have heard me.”

 

Sango sighed as she cracked her neck, “I really hope that Rin or Sorano find something on this guy. I mean it doesn't even say what kind of youkai he is. Like,” Sango flipped through her file and stopped a few papers in, “it says here that on July 17 2003 Suzuki's team caught up with Mystic outside of the Sengakuji Temple in the Shibuya-ku district and were attacked by some kind of illusion. Now that would mean he was a some sort of moth youkai right?! But then,” again Sango flipped more through the file, “it says here that once again Suzuki's team were pushed back by him when he used a very powerful kekkai to help his escape. Now that would mean that he was a bat youkai.” Sango growled out in frustration.

 

“I guess that we just need to wait till Rin comes back from Central Command to find out what youkai he is. As I have read it says he's like a combination of a moth, bat, neko, and poison youkai. I would…” Kagome was interrupted when the conference room door opened and in walked Sorano. She was carrying a long thin metal box in her arms. She walked to Sango's side of the table and placed the box on the table.

 

“Took you long enough Haven,” Sango pushed her chair away from the table and stretched.

 

“I'm sorry your highness but I had a lot of paperwork to fill out and I had a meeting with the other Elite Team Leaders. Not to mention that I had to head down to the Weaponry to get the new nano-tech armor.”

 

Sango muttered something under her breath and Sorano glared at her. Sango raised a hand and looked away. I swear that Sango really likes to push her luck with Sorano. But I know that they have a great respect for each other. Sango just isn't the type of person to be kept waiting and Sorano doesn't like to be questioned.

 

Sorano pulled a chair out and sat down while she pulled the metal box closer to herself. “So what did you all found out?”

 

Kagome sighed, “Nothing. It seems that this guy doesn't really exist. He has been chased by four teams over the last three years and all that seems to have happened is that the teams are sent to the hospital to visit the ICU. Plus none of the teams have been able to pin down what kind of youkai he is.”

 

“Plus he has some really wicked youki that we are going to have to be careful of. He is most deadly when he is corner.” Sango added.

 

Sorano nodded, “Most youkai, not matter what breed they are, are very dangerous when cornered. We don't like to feel pressure and when we are cornered our blood goes into overdrive. We will do what is needed to get out of that situation. So that is not unheard of. What has me puzzled is that if the first team was send to the ICU then why didn't the second team learn from the first teams mistakes?”

 

The door opened again and in walked Rin. She was grinning from ear to ear. She was dressed in her uniform and Kagome smiled. Rin really loved her job and since she wasn't in the field, as per Sorano's orders, she had risen to the highest-ranking Central Command Operator in the United Alliance. Her hair was pulled into a high ponytail and she was wearing her headset. Her headset looked like a cell phone's hands free headset but it also had an eye patch that completely covered one eye. Kagome knew, from having worn one before, that though the eye patch was completely black it had a state of the art computer screen on the other side of the patch. Rin was also wearing a very tight black suit. It covered her body completely. It looked a lot like a body suit that gymnasts would wear. This was because the office that Rin worked in was a static free zone. Also on her suit were the emblems of the United Alliance and the emblem of their team.

 

“I can answer that one Sorano,” Rin walked into the room and dimmed the lights. Sorano moved the metal box off the table and placed it on the floor. Rin walked to the head chair and pushed a button on the underside of the table. The hologram projector hummed to life. She pushed another button and a tiny control panel flipped over on the table in front of Rin. She punched in some random codes and suddenly a green light lit up on her headpiece. Rin walked over and stood so that everyone could see her.

 

“This youkai Mystic is his name.” Sango looked at Rin with a confused expression, “What I mean Taijiya is that he is very mysterious and thus has been named Mystic. This is the best picture of him that I could fine. Well other then the bust shot that we saw earlier.” Rin reached a hand up and pushed her earpiece, “Mystic File 706523.”

 

The hologram lit up and a full body picture of Mystic appeared. “Alright so this picture was taken by Washi who had tailed him for three weeks. The file says that he wears the same clothes all the time. He wears a long black trench coat that he wears closed at all time, black pants and thick black boots. Though he would naturally stand out in public it also says in the file that people don't really seem to notice him.”

 

“He walks around in that get up and no one notices him?” Sango shook her head. “He is a walking fashion idiot.”

 

“I agree Sango but he doesn't get noticed. Washi said that no one gave him a second look. Which brings me to his youki. I believe that he uses his youki to blend in. This also brings me to the fact that none of the teams have been able to identify what kind of youkai he is. His youki is so erratic that our scanners can't seem to pick him up. Thus we need a DNA sample to find out.”

 

“Wait a minute. If we needed a DNA sample why didn't the other teams get one?” Sorano looked from the hologram to Rin.

 

“That's what I thought to and since Kaeda said that we can't speak of this mission with the others I couldn't talk with Washi about it. I have read the files and the files say that they have attacked him but they never drew blood.”

 

Sango leaned forward and rested her elbow on the table, “You mean to tell us that Suzuki's team attacked Mystic and never drew blood. Wow! Ryu must be losing his touch. I mean if Ryu goes into a battle and actually attacks he always always draws blood.”

 

Rin shook her head, “Ryu did attack and in the report it said that he did seem to rip apart Mystic's clothing but it was as if he was wearing something underneath the clothes that made it so that Ryu's claws couldn't hurt him.”

 

Sorano rubbed her chin, “Then that would mean that he must have some sort of nano-tech as well. I mean our armour reacts to our auras and youki and thus makes it so that we can't be hurt as usual. But if he has something more powerful then that…” Sorano suddenly gasped, “Rin bring up the lists of all the teams that have attacked Mystic.”

 

Rin looked at Sorano confused and nodded as she pushed the button on her earpiece, “Mystic File 706542.” The hologram hummed as the image of Mystic vanished and was replaced by the listing of all the teams that were assigned to the mission. The first was Suzuki's team, which was composed of Suzuki as Team Lead, Ryu as Second Lead, Washi as Strategist, and Taka as Central Command. The second was Geisha's team, which was composed of Geisha as Team Lead, Luc as Second Lead, Jushin as Strategist, and Kellie as Central Command. The third was Alec's team, which was composed of Alec as Team Lead, Leighanne as Second Lead, Morsha as Strategist, and Joey as Central Command. Finally they were listed. Sorano as Team Lead, Kagome as Second Lead, Sango as Strategist, and Rin as Central Command.

 

Sorano read the list and laughed, “I thought as much.”

 

“You thought as much what?” Sango drummed her fingers on the table as she looked at Sorano.

 

“All the teams that were before us never had a miko in the team. If my theory is correct then I believe that he is using his youki as armour and the reason that no one, not even Ryu, could touch him was because of this. But with Kagome working with us I believe that we will be able to brake through that armor and finally find out what we are up against.”

 

Rin smiled, “I didn't even think to look that up. Awesome thinking Sorano. We will have to see what we can do about this. I think that it would be wise to tail him at first. You know find out where he likes to hang out, what he does day in and out, and basically figure out his schedule of workings.”

 

Sorano nodded, “Yes that is the best plan that we have so far. We can't really attack if we don't really know what we are up against.”

 

Rin pushed the button on her earpiece twice and the hologram projector sank back into the table. Rin pulled a seat out and sat down on her knees. “So what do we do first?”

 

Sorano leaned back in her chair, “We need to get information and there is only one person in this city that I would trust to have correct information. And since we seem to be going out tonight on the town with the boys we can stop there and see him.”

 

Sango leaned back in her chair, “Sounds like a plan. I mean if the old man is still alive after all this time,” Sorano glared at Sango but she ignored it and continued, “So what's in the box?”

 

Sorano shook her head at Sango as she reached over and picked up the box. She laid it on the table and slowly opened it. Kagome gasped, “Are those…”

 

“Yes these are our new nano-tech armour. They have all been improved and specially made for us. So if everyone would take off their old ones. Well everyone but Rin. Sorry sweetie but yours didn't change.”

 

Rin smiled, “I didn't think that mine would. I mean I don't go out into the field or anything so why would I need mine upgraded.”

 

Kagome rolled up her sleeves and carefully removed the bracelets on her wrists. She had gotten so used to wearing them that she instantly felt naked without them. Kagome placed her two bracelets on the table and rolled her sleeves back down. She stood and raised her leg as she placed her foot on the table. She rolled up her pant leg and removed her anklet. She did the same for the other leg. Once she had removed both these items she added them to her pile and sat back down.

 

Sorano had removed hers. She only wore a necklace and a belt buckle. Kagome smirked as she watched Sango removing hers. Sango had the most armor out of all of them. That was because Sango didn't have youki or spiritual energy to enhance her armor. So she wore two bracelets, two anklets, a belt, and a necklace. Once Sango was finished she added her things to the growing pile and sat back down.

 

“I feel so naked it isn't even funny. I think I have been wearing that armor for over two years now.” Sango reached up and rubbed her neck which was now void of her necklace.

 

“I know the feeling Sango. I can't wait to get the new armor on. I know that we are safe within the United Alliance headquarters but I just don't really feel safe without them on.”

 

“Well then I will just get on it. Kagome…”

Inuyasha couldn't wait any longer. Granted it was only 7:15 but he really wanted to call Kagome and make sure that this wasn't just some awesome dream. Inuyasha growled out in frustration. “Fuck it! I'm calling her now.” Inuyasha flipped open his cell phone and dialled the number that he had memorized over two hours ago.

 

Ring…ring… ring…

 

Inuyasha walked over to his window and looked out into the darkening night sky. Ring…Ring… Inuyasha started to tap his claws against the glass. What the hell is taking her so long to answer the phone???

 

Suddenly the line was picked up.

 

~~He..Hello?~~

 

Inuyasha's ears perked up at the sound of Kagome's voice. Thank Kami-sama it wasn't a dream! “Hey Kagome.”

 

~~Ermm… Hello?~~

 

Baka she doesn't remember who you are! “Sorry Kagome it's me Inuyasha.”

 

~~Oh! Sorry. I'm not used to giving this number out. Is it 8 already?~~

 

“Erm… No it isn't. But I was getting really bored sitting around waiting till them. It's about 7:20.”

 

~~Wow. It's that late already? Sorry we are just really busy here at the studio that I lost track of time.~~

 

“That's okay I can understand. So, we on for tonight?”

 

~~Sango knock that off! What?! It's Inuyasha. What are you doing? Sango I swear to Kami-sama put that down! Gomen Inuyasha what did you say?~~

 

Inuyasha held in a laugh. He had no idea what Sango was doing but Inuyasha could pretty much see Kagome's eyebrow twitching. “I asked if we're still on for tonight?”

 

~~Oh yeah of course! But… what Sorano? Inuyasha can you hold on a minute?~~

 

Inuyasha blinked and nodded, “Of course.” The line went dead. Inuyasha watched as the sun started to set. It would be dark soon. The days are getting shorter. Soon it will be fall. Longer nights mean longer nights with Kagome. Wait a minute! Where the hell did that come from! I just met her.

 

~~Inuyasha?~~

 

Inuyasha snapped out of his musing, “Yeah I'm here.”

 

~~Sorano was wondering if the club on Shinjuki and 6th is still there?~~

 

Inuyasha scrunched up his nose. That is the most popular club in all of Tokyo. “Yeah its still there. Why?”

 

~~Why don't we all meet there. We don't really have time to go out sight seeing tonight and I really feel like unwinding. I used to go to that club a few years ago and I really liked it. Why don't we all meet there for 8:30?~~

 

“Sure but we will end up waiting in line for a good couple of hours.”

 

Kagome laughed and Inuyasha felt his heart skip a beat. ~~I don't think that is going to be a problem. Just be in the parking lot across the street from the club at about 8:30. We'll handle the rest.~~

 

“Okay we'll be there.”

 

~~Oh and Inuyasha~~

 

“Yeah?”

 

~~Wear something sexy. Ja ne!~~

 

The line went dead and Inuyasha was speechless. He didn't even know how long he stood there. Kagome… did she just… she… Inuyasha smirked. Well if she wants me to wear something sexy then I'm going to blow her mind.

 

Inuyasha hung up the phone. “SESSHOMARU!!!! GET READY TO GO!!!!” Inuyasha laughed as he heard Sesshomaru growl in response.

Kagome hung up the phone and instantly felt herself blushing. Kagome placed her phone on the table and slowly looked at Sango. Sango was looking at her slack jawed. She could feel her face getting redder and redder.

 

“What?”

 

Sango shook her head and looked at Kagome, “I can't believe you just said that!”

 

Kagome shrugged, “I can't really either but I did. I don't know what it is about Inuyasha but I really like him. Plus with the clothes I am going to be wearing I want him to look good too.”

 

“And what are you going to be wearing Miko,” asked Sorano as she put on her new necklace.

 

“You'll see. I think we should all dress a little different. If we are trying to draw the attention of some nasty youkai then we should look like girls that are looking for trouble.”

 

“I have to agree with you on that one. All right. I think we are done for the night. Rin go and log out. Sango if you would please help Kagome put these files away that would be very helpful. If we get this all done quickly we can get home, get changed and leave for the club on time.”

 

Kagome nodded to Sorano as she started packing up the files. Rin jumped off her chair and ran from the conference room. Sorano stood and took the metal box off the table and placed it under her arm. As Sorano reached the door she stopped and turned around, “I will be filling Kaeda in on what are action plan is so far. I will see what other info I can get from her as well.”

 

“Sounds good Sorano. We'll meet you at the cars.”

 

Sorano nodded and left the room. Sango turned and eyed Kagome. Kagome once again felt her cheeks starting to flush, “So what is it about Inuyasha that you like?”

 

Kagome sighed. This was going to be a long night.

Inuyasha climbed out of Sesshomaru's car and sighed in relief. He hated to get rides with Sesshomaru but with them parking in a parking lot in downtown Tokyo it only made sense to take as few cars as possible. Inuyasha ran a hand through his hair and looked at his attire. He was so going to have Kagome drooling over him. He had decided to wear a pair of tight black leather pants with thick black boots with a metal cap showing on the toe. He was also wearing a loose fitting red silk button up shirt that he left un-tucked and the first four buttons were left undone.

 

Sesshomaru climbed out of the car and locked the doors. Inuyasha watched as Sesshomaru rounded the hood of the car and stood next to him. Sesshomaru was wearing white dress pants that were a little tighter then usual, white leather dress shoes, and a silver silk dress shirt that was tucked into his pants. Inuyasha smirked. Even when he goes out to party he looks like a professional. Well at least the shirt isn't all the way buttoned up like he usually likes to wear.

 

“What time is it Sesshomaru?” Inuyasha crossed his arms and leaned back against the passenger side door.

 

“8:17”

 

“Keh. You think that the monk and the wolf would be early to some things,” Inuyasha glanced across the street and sighed. There was huge line up outside the club and it wasn't even opened yet. The club always opened at 8:30 and if you weren't waiting in the line up since about 5 you couldn't really get in. “I really hope that Kagome can get us through that line up. I know that they are The Sage but even this place won't just let anyone in because they're famous.”

 

“If she said that she could get us in then they will get us in.”

 

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. Talking to Sesshomaru was like trying to talk to a brick wall. The only difference was that the brick wall was more interesting then Sesshomaru. Inuyasha's ear twitched as he heard the tell tale sound of Miroku's muffler. That idiot really needs to get that car looked at. Of course it looks awesome but there is something wrong with it.

 

Inuyasha tapped his foot as Miroku pulled into the stall beside Sesshomaru's car. Miroku and Koga climbed out and walked over to them. Miroku was dressed much in the same fashion as Sesshomaru. Except that Miroku was wearing black slacks, black shoes, and a deep purple shirt. Inuyasha almost laughed at the get up that Koga was wearing. He was wearing baggy jeans, skater sneakers, and a tight deep green wife beater.

 

“Good Evening Friends,” Miroku greeted, as he got closer to the group.

 

“What the hell is up with your get up Koga,” Inuyasha lost the battle with his laughter and was now grabbing his side, which had developed a stitch from holding it in.

 

“What the hell are you talking about mutt?! I am dressed to dance with Kagome. You're the one that looks like an idiot.”

 

Inuyasha growled and was about to comment back when a set of headlights turned into the parking lot. Inuyasha glanced at the lights and smiled. It was Sorano's Carrera and it was followed by Sango's Viper.

 

“Keh! Looks like you were saved this time wolf,” Inuyasha turned away from Koga and watched as Sorano and Sango both pulled into the stalls on the other side of Miroku's car. Inuyasha could feel himself getting excited. He couldn't wait for Kagome to see him in leather. All the girls in school would drool and their arousal was always immediate.

 

The engines to both cars were cut and Inuyasha and company walked over to them.

Kagome was beside herself with excitement and it was a welcome change from the nervousness that she would feel just before a mission. Right now she was just a girl with her friends and they were going to a dance club. Kagome checked her hair in the rear view mirror quickly before she climbed out of the car. And what greeted Kagome's eyes almost made her gasp. There was Inuyasha and he was wearing leather. Now that is something that I wouldn't mind seeing him in more often.

 

“Hey guys!” Kagome smiled as she closed the car door and saw the look on Inuyasha's face as she came into view. Well Inuyasha you're not the only one who likes to wear leather. Kagome looked down at her attire quickly and smiled. She was wearing tight low rider blood red leather pants that flared at the bottom, black boots, a thick black belt with a large plain copper buckle, and to finish off the look she was wearing a black shirt that Rin had designed. The shirt only covered her bust and left all of her stomach showing. The neckline was very low cut and showed off a lot of cleavage. But what Kagome liked about the shirt the most was the sleeves. The sleeves were long but tight around her bicep and flared out from the elbow down to her wrist.

 

“Good Evening everyone,” Sorano came around the corner and into sight and Kagome smirked. She wasn't the only one who saw Sesshomaru do a double take of Sorano. Kagome could so see why. Sorano was always someone who loved to show off her body but not is a slutty kind of way. Plus she always wore anything that Rin had designed. Tonight she was dressed in a complete outfit that Rin had created and she wore it perfectly. Sorano had pulled her hair into a high ponytail that was held in place by a family heirloom hair clip. She was wearing the most interesting jacket that Rin had ever made. It had a high vicar collar, long sleeves that flared out to a point at the wrists, and the jacket was buttoned closed with one button that sat at her collarbone. But what made this jacket so interesting was the fact that from the button the jacket fell open and barely covered her bust as it wrapped around her torso and trailed down her back where to came to a point at her knees.

 

Under the jacket she wear a very revealing crop top shirt. Just below her breasts she was wearing a thin belt that she said made sure that her shirt didn't ride up. A piece of leather was clipped to the belt and hung all the way down to her knees. Sorano decided to draw attention to her flat stomach and wore low rider white leather pants that had cuts it different places over the legs. To finish off her look she was wearing white leather boots with their team emblem on the outside ankles.

 

“Good evening Sorano,” Sesshomaru walked over to Sorano and took her hand and gently kissed the top of it. Sorano smiled as she looped her arm into Sesshomaru's offered arm.

 

Sango and Rin came around the corner and were dressed in almost the same clothes that they had worn to school. Sorano flat out told Rin that she wasn't allowed to wear anything to revealing because it would draw way to much attention. And of course Sango being the fighter in the group decided to dress in clothes that would be an advantage in a battle not a hindrance.

 

“Well everyone shall we be going?” Kagome looked away from Inuyasha as she addressed everyone in the group. Inuyasha walked over to Kagome and offered her his arm much in the same fashion that Sesshomaru had done to Sorano. Kagome giggled to herself as she looped her arm into Inuyasha's.

 

“What the hell do you think you are doing mutt?!”

 

Inuyasha stopped causing Kagome to as well. She looked from Inuyasha to Koga and then back again.

 

“Did I miss something Koga?” Kagome cocked an eyebrow when she heard Koga growl at Inuyasha.

 

Inuyasha `keh!'ed as he looked back at Kagome, “Wolf boy over there just can't take a hint. Come on Kagome lets go.”

 

Kagome shook her head and shrugged as she and Inuyasha followed after Sorano. They had just cleared the sidewalk and now were walking towards the entrance of the club. Kagome smiled as she saw Sorano and Sesshomaru chatting quietly to each other as they crossed the street. She suddenly felt Inuyasha pull on her arm and looked up at the golden eyed boy.

 

“You look great Kagome. I really like you in leather.”

 

Kagome blushed slightly as she looked away, “Thank-you Inuyasha. You look very nice in leather.” Kagome could feel Inuyasha smirking even though she wasn't looking at his face. A flash of light caught Kagome's attention as she looked towards the club. The neon lights above the entrance to the club had just flashed to life. The eerie blue lights read `The Shattered Soul'. Kagome took a deep calming breath. This is where it all began…
