Chapter Eleven

The New School Song and the New Student

 

Kagome leaned against the wall just outside of the principles office. They had been here for just over a week and already Sorano was yelling at the principle. Of course Kagome couldn't blame Sorano for her actions. After all it was pretty dirty of the principle to change the music assignment and not inform the students of said class.

 

“I think Sorano is going to kill him,” Kagome glanced at Sango who was sitting on one of the sofa lounge benches that sat just outside the office door.

 

Rin nodded in agreement, “I think you're right Taijiya. How could he pull something as stupid as that and not think that Sorano was going to say something. Now the whole school is excited and we haven't even played our song for the teacher yet.”

 

“Rin I think the principle was planning this the whole time. I mean Sorano pretty much told him where to go and how to get there the last time he tried this. Not to mention that it isn't really fair to the other students in music.”

 

“Kagome's right. I mean the music teacher just got back and now she is told that we have to perform our songs in front of the school this afternoon in a pep rally,” Sango sighed and leaned back against the wall, “I just hope the guys are okay with this. They have been working pretty hard on there song.”

 

Kagome smiled to herself as Sango and Rin continued talking. The guys. Sorano and Sesshomaru had pretty much become the official couple of the school the day they came back from the attack at the club. They were always seen together and they were basically the talk of the school. Kagome smiled even more at the thought of her and Inuyasha. They were the known as the oddest couple. Inuyasha and his temper and her with her patience. Everyone knew that the four of them were together and that messing with any of them meant the wrath of the others. But now this whole mess with the music class was driving them all crazy.

It turned out the principle had heard about the music assignment and since the girls had refused to perform for the principle he had decided to take matters into his own hands. Kagome, Sango, and Rin all stood in the parking lot. Sorano had been pulled aside because the assistant principle wished to speak to her. Kagome could still remember the feel of Sorano's youki as she left with the others. This was not going to turn out very well.

 

“Good afternoon ladies!” Miroku walked into the parking lot followed shortly by Koga, Inuyasha, and Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru looked at the three of them and before Miroku could even get out another statement he was standing right in front of Kagome.

 

“Where is Sorano?” Sesshomaru had no sooner said this then Sorano's youki pulsated from inside the school. Sesshomaru made to go into the school but Rin stopped him.

 

“Its okay Sesshomaru. Sorano is fine. Trust me.” Sesshomaru didn't look convinced but he stayed.

 

“Hey Kagome,” Kagome turned and smiled as Inuyasha made his way towards her.

 

“Hey yourself,” Kagome wrapped her arms around Inuyasha's waist as he leaned down and lightly kissed her.

 

“What's going on?” Inuyasha wrapped his arms around Kagome, ignoring the growling coming from Koga and looked towards Sesshomaru and Rin.

 

“Sorano is talking with the assistant principle and her youki is flaring.”

 

“Holy shit that's Sorano?!”

 

Kagome giggled as she nodded her head, “Yes that's her. She was pulled aside, as we were leaving, to talk to the assistant principle and I can guess by her youki that she's not a happy camper.”

 

Sango walked over to Kagome and grinned, “I think we're about to find out. Here she comes.” Kagome looked over Inuyasha's shoulder and saw Sorano speed walking towards them. “And I don't think that she's in a very good mood.”

 

Kagome nodded and flinched when Sorano finally reached them. Her youki was coming off of her in waves. Even Sesshomaru took a step back when she approached the cars.

 

“I don't think that youkai should be held responsible for their actions. Whether they be by accident or intentional.”

 

Sango crossed her arms and cocked her eyebrow, “I take it that the assistant didn't have anything good to say.”

 

Sorano growled, closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “Oh no she didn't have anything good to say and I can't blame her for being afraid the minute I walked into the room.”

 

“What do you mean Sorano?” Rin had finally taken a step closer to Sorano. Kagome had to admit that her youki was starting to calm down but Kagome knew that Sorano was going to need an intense training session in order to calm herself right down.

 

“Well the principle went home early today and left a message with the assistant to tell me. The coward didn't even have the guts to come to my face and tell me!”

 

“And that would be?”

 

“Sango I am in no mood for your smart talk right now,” Sango held up a hand in apologize, “She told me that the music assignment has changed. In stead of us doing the songs in class and only in front of the other class members and then have said class members be the voters the principle is turning the assignment into a pep rally!”

 

Kagome jumped back from Inuyasha. “WHAT! He can't do that! This is a music assignment so therefore it is meant to be done in the music class. Not in front of the whole school!”

 

“Miko is right! I knew that asshole was going to try and pull something like this and make us perform in front of the school. That fuc…”

 

“Sango!!! I may be in a horrible mood now but I don't wish to hear that kind of language.”

 

Sango threw up her hands and walked off. Inuyasha stepped forward and looked at Sorano confused. “I don't know why you're so upset. I mean you've performed a million times in front of people and now you're going to be performing in front of our school.”

 

Kagome sighed and placed a hand on his shoulder, “Sweetie it's a whole different thing. We came to this school so that we could have the chance at a little bit of a normal life and the minute we arrived here the principle wanted us to perform in a pep rally. We just want to have at least one normal year of high school. But I guess that is too much to ask for.”

 

Inuyasha turned to Kagome, “I didn't know. I guess I didn't really think about that. I mean we guys are just starting out and performing is everything to us.”

 

“I agree with Inuyasha, Kagome. I mean we need to get out there and make our name known and this is a great way to do that.”

 

“Miroku I hear what your saying but think about it. The Sage is going to be performing at the school. The students aren't going to care that it is the chance to pick a new school song their going to see it as a chance to hear us performing.” Sango finished her statement and pulled out her car keys.

 

Sesshomaru stepped forward and wrapped his arm around Sorano's waist. “I hate to agree with Sango on this but she makes a valid point.”

 

“I don't really care anymore. What is done is done. I just want to go home and work on this song now. We have to perform it on Monday and I want to have the time to write it.” Rin followed after Sango as they left the parking lot.

 

Kagome shrugged and turned to Sorano, “Well I guess that was our que to get going.”

The door to the office burst open causing everyone in the waiting area to jump. To say that Sorano looked livid was an understatement. Her eyes had changed to an almost iridescent silver and her youki was flooding the room. The other youkai and hanyous that were in the office all backed up. Kagome pushed away from the wall shaking her head. This is just going to be one of those days. I can feel it.

 

Sorano looked at the girls and walked out into the hall. Rin was the first to follow after her. Sango shrugged her shoulders and followed after Rin. Once they were in the hall Sorano made a beeline for the front door. I guess she doesn't want to find the guys right now. I don't blame her but Sesshomaru is going to find her anyways. With as much youki as she is giving off I'm surprised that he hasn't found us yet.

 

Sorano pushed open the front doors and walked out into the front yawn. Kagome and the others were all but running to keep up with her. Sorano stopped in front of a large oak tree and placed her hand on the trunk for support.

 

“Uhmm… Sorano?”

 

“Rin just give me a minute please.”

 

Rin turned to Kagome and shrugged. Sango stepped forward and placed a hand on Sorano's shoulder. “Haven I know you want some time but you have to realize that this sort of thing was bound to happen. I mean the principle is a real ass…” Sorano glared over her shoulder, “I know you don't like the language but I can't think of a better word to describe him. Anyways we all wanted a normal last year at high school but with the lives we lead I don't think it was even possible. We are famous whether we wish to accept that or not. The principle just wants to put his school on the map. I mean The Sage singing the new school song?! What principle wouldn't want that for his school.”

 

“Taijiya we haven't even won the contest.”

 

Rin laughed causing everyone to look. “Oh come on Sorano. The principle is going to make sure that we win. I don't think he cares how good the other songs are.”

 

Kagome sat down on the cool grass and sighed deeply, “I know your right Rin but that's not fair. I mean the guys worked really hard on their song and now everyone is going to only be thinking about us performing. When I called Inuyasha this weekend I heard them practicing and they're really good. I just wish that they would have a fighting chance.”

 

Sorano turned away from the tree and smiled at Kagome, “What if we give them a fighting chance.”

 

“Huh?!” Sorano giggled at the girls' response.

 

“I mean what if we suck. I mean really suck then the guys would have a fighting chance.”

 

“Oh yeah sure Sorano that's a good idea. Let's throw the game and have the guys find out that we sucked on purpose so they can feel a shallow victory. Not to mention that if Kaeda ever found out that we did it on purpose she would kill us.”

 

“As much as I think your idea is good Sorano I have to agree with Sango on this. If we throw the contest then it just shows that the guys have our sympathy that they are going up against us. Plus the idea of Kaeda finding out gives me the creeps.” Rin shivered and laughed.

 

“Well I guess we should get to third period. We have already missed about half of the class and I have a English test to write.” Sorano started to walk inside. Sango run up to her and threw her arm around her shoulders. Sango whispered something and took off running into the school. Sorano growled and gave chase.

 

“I don't think those two are ever going to change.”

 

Rin giggled and looked at Kagome, “Do you want them to?” Kagome watched as Sango kicked open the front door and ran as fast as she could. Sorano was on her heels in seconds.

 

“Nope!” Kagome threw her arm around Rin and laughed the whole way into the school.

Inuyasha was sitting with his back against a tree in the middle of the soccer field. Kagome was leaning against his chest as she chitchatted with Rin who was busy talking about Kohaku and his latest events of Japanese History. None of that mattered at the moment. Right now Inuyasha's mind was on the pep rally that was about twenty minutes away. They were all called to the music room ten minutes before the end of last period. There they were all told the order that they would be performing and the outfits that they were all going to be wearing.

 

Inuyasha smirked as he remembered the comments that Sango had made about the outfits. True he didn't like the idea of having to dress in the school colours but at least the girls had more choices on what to wear then the guys. There was something to be said about a girl in a pleated skirt and Kagome had picked that outfit to wear during the contest.

 

Inuyasha's attention was drawn to the side door as a flash of silver and white caught his eye. Sorano and Sesshomaru were walking straight to them. Inuyasha smirked as everyone in the smoking area cleared a path for the two of them to walk through. It was like royalty had arrived at school.

 

“Look at those two. I think that they would be able to part the red sea if it was standing in their way.”

 

“You know Sango, Sorano has really good hearing.”

 

Sango leaned back on her elbows and looked at Rin, “I know that! That's why I said it.”

 

Rin just shook her head and watched as they walked towards the others. As they got closer Inuyasha's hearing picked up the conversation that they were having.

 

“Sesshomaru I don't think that I will be applying for the Senior Pin position. I have way to much to worry about right now.”

 

“I know that you have a lot to deal with and I respect that but I am saying that there is no one that I would even consider getting that position other then you.”

 

Sorano leaned into Sesshomaru and grasped his hand, “Look will you drop it if I promise to think about.”

 

Inuyasha nearly jumped out of this skin when he saw Sesshomaru grin, “If I believed you I would drop it.” Sorano slapped Sesshomaru in the chest and laughed. Those two are way to perfect for each other. I swear if Sesshomaru smiles again his face will crack.

 

Sorano and Sesshomaru reached the others and instantly Sesshomaru's face was back to its stoic look. “Well I tried to talk to the music teacher and she is staying away from me as well. I think that it has to be a record. I got almost the whole teaching staff afraid of me in just over a week.”

 

“I think your right Sorano. I'll give the Guinness Book of World Records a call right now!” Sango whipped out her cell phone and mocked dialling her phone.

 

“Ha ha!” Sorano murmured something and Inuyasha burst out laughing. Kagome turned and looked at Inuyasha. “Inuyasha you repeat that and I'll make sure that no matter how hard Kagome tries you'll be feeling nothing.” Inuyasha stopped laughing as everyone, except Kagome who blushed, starting laughing.

Kagome tuned her bass guitar as she waited in the hall just outside the gym. She couldn't make out any of the words to the song but Inuyasha's band The Calling was doing a great job on the sound. Sango was leaning against the wall twirling her favourite drumsticks between her fingers. She looked a little out of place wearing the school colours but of course that was due to the fact that Sango never wore anything that didn't have pink on it.

 

Kagome looked down at herself and sighed. She wasn't the biggest skirt fan but the look on Inuyasha's face as she placed the skirt to herself was enough for her to choose that outfit. Out of everyone in the band Sorano was the only one that looked normal. The school colours at least had silver in it and that was after all Sorano's favourite colour.

 

Suddenly the gym door opened and out walked Sorano. “They are amazing! They have this very unique sound. I don't think that I've ever heard another band sound like that. Not to mention that the school really seems to like the song.”

 

Rin stood up and brushed the dust off her pants. “What about the lyrics?”

 

Sorano made a `so-so' sign with her hand. “They need to work on them but hey it's a school song and its not meant to be a hit. The school song is mainly to get everyone all hyped up. And that is what is happening in there.”

 

Sango smiled and walked over to Sorano, “Well I guess we should get ready. I just wish that they had let us all into the gym to hear all the songs. I hate waiting in the background. Plus I really wanted to hear the guys singing.”

 

Just then the gym door opened again and they could hear Inuyasha thanking the crowd. The cheering was amazing and almost deafening. Again Kagome wondered how Sorano could stand the noise when she wished that she were deaf half the time. “Sorano-san you guys are up next. Good Luck!”

 

Sorano smiled and nodded, “Thanks Shippo.” Sorano turned to the girls and smiled, “Okay girls lets go!”

 

Sorano lead the way through the doors. Kagome was grinning as she heard the school still cheering and calling out the names of the guys. That was something that Kagome always loved. She was pleasing people every time she took the stage. The people that took time from their schedules to come down and listen to them perform and sing. Sorano reached the next set of doors and stopped.

 

“Okay girls lets get our game faces on. I know that this isn't really a concert but we have played for years together and this is just another song. I know we are going to knock their socks off.” Kagome couldn't help but grin. Sorano opened the door slightly and saw that the music teacher was standing on the little stage that had been set up. All the instruments were already on the stage. Well all but her bass guitar and Sorano's guitar.

 

“All right everyone we have one last performance for today. Once this performance is done you will be getting a slip of paper from your teacher. On this paper is the name of each song and the students that performed it. You will vote and give it back to your teacher. In a week we will be announcing the winner and the song will be played in another pep rally. Now on with the last song of the day. Here they are `The Sage' and their song `On the Prowl'!!!!”

 

The music teacher finished her little speech and Sorano pushed open the door and lead them all to the stage. The cheering was deafening. Kagome and the others did as they always did when they walked onto stage, they waved and smiled and Sango twirled her drumsticks in her hands. Sorano reached the microphone and thanked the music teacher for the warm welcome. Kagome took her spot to the right of Sorano as Sango went to the drums and Rin walked over to the keyboards.

 

While Sango, Rin and herself were getting themselves ready Sorano took the mic and did what she always did. “Good Afternoon Tokyo High!!” The students jumped up and started cheering and banging their feet on the benches' stairs. “I say that we end this day on a high note!! Everyone let the music take over and enjoy yourselves; after all this song is for you!!”

 

Kagome plugged in her bass guitar and looked to Sango. Sango looked from Kagome to Sorano and finally to Rin. Everyone nodded and Sango started to count off.

 

“1…2…1..2..3..4…”

 

Kagome whipped her hair around as she began the beat of the song. Kagome had to admit, even if it was only to herself, that this was one of Rin's best songs. It was fast, upbeat, and nothing like any of the other songs that she had written. Sango jumped in right after Kagome started playing the first two lines of the song.

 

Sorano tapped her foot as she counted off the bars. Kagome picked up the tempo as Rin started in on her keyboards. The cheering in the crowds was drowned out. All Kagome could hear or feel was the music. This was by far her favourite part of being in a band. The feel of losing herself to the beat of the music.

 

Sorano whipped around and started to play. Kagome looked around the gym and saw that not a single person was sitting down. Kagome stepped up to her mic and looked at Sorano. Sorano looked over and winked as she walked up to her mic.

 

~ Who are we?

 

Kagome shivered slightly at the tone of Sorano's voice. She usually sang about two octaves higher then she was now but Rin said that it would sound better if she sang a little deeper then normal.

 

~ Cloaked in Darkness

~ You can't see

~ Before its too late

 

The tempo picked up and they all played a cord lower for the chorus.

~ Marauders find their prey

~ Hear us Growl

~ Destroying you, without a trace

 

Kagome stepped forward as her solo hit. She hated to say it but she loved to be the one to do the solos. She closed her eyes and let the tempo and the flow of the song wash over her. Kagome twirled around and tapped her foot as the song once again started to pick up. Sango was first to rejoin her, followed by Sorano and then Rin.

~ Fighting for the win

 

Kagome and Rin leaned more forward into their microphones. Now was the time for the ending and Sorano was a fan of echoing.

~Hear! Us! Growl!

Kagome held the last note for a second longer as the song ended. Suddenly it was like she had gone deaf. The cheering and the clapping had reached such a pitch that it was moulding into one sound. Sorano's eyebrow twitched as she bowed and Kagome had to stop herself from laughing. Finally a pitch that hurts her ears!

Inuyasha was still on a sort of high as they all stood out in the parking lot. The girls' performance was amazing. Of course he was little mad because he already knew that their song was going to be the new school song but it did give them some more stage time. Plus hearing Kagome tell him that from what she heard they sounded awesome.

 

Inuyasha was enjoying his time talking with the others when a horn blared in the background. Inuyasha cursed as he covered his ears. A black Honda Civic was blaring its horn as it pulled into the parking lot. Inuyasha could think of a lot better way to get the students out of the way and it was a lot less painful then blaring a fucking horn.

 

The Civic pulled into the empty stall across from Inuyasha and the gang. It cut its engine and for a time nothing happened. Inuyasha tried to see into the car but all the windows were tinted. Who the fuck does this person think they are! Schools out for the day so why the hell would they show up now? Suddenly the door opened and a high-heeled leg appeared. An almost naked girl with long black hair shortly followed it.

 

“Oh fuck no!” Kagome turned from the girl and looked at Inuyasha.

 

“Inuyasha?”

 

The girl turned around and smiled at Inuyasha. This is just a bad dream and any minute I'll wake up and she will not be walking towards me!!! The girl stopped right in front of Inuyasha and ran her hand down his chest. Inuyasha cringed and pushed her hand away.

 

“Oh is that anyway to treat your lover Inuyasha.” Kagome gasped and stared between the two of them.

 

Inuyasha growled and flashed his fangs at the girl, “You are not and never were my lover Kikyo!”
