Chapter Twenty-Four

The Protector of the Higurashi Family

 

Sorano stared into the cool eyes of Sesshomaru. She didn't even sense his youki or his scent. She silently berated herself for not noticing him. “Sesshomaru…”

 

Sesshomaru walked towards her and he had an unknown look in his eyes. Sorano could still feel the warmth of her tears on her face as he stopped before her. “I was wondering where you had run off to.”

 

Sorano looked off to the side not wanting Sesshomaru to see the pain and guilt in her eyes, “Kagome isn't the only one that needs to embrace her past tonight. I got my memories back from my old life and now I know whom I am. I was too late for the Higurashi of this time but I will not let anything happen to Kagome.”

 

Sesshomaru raised his hand and tilted her face so that she was looking him in the eye, “Why do you protect ningen?”

 

Sorano smiled sadly at Sesshomaru, “Why not?”

 

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow, “We are above ningen and yet you would die for them”

 

Sorano backed away as she shook her head, “I don't believe that we are better then ningens. We need them just as they need us. Kagome, Sango and Rin are my family and would die for anyone of them just like I would die for you.”

 

Sorano gasped as Sesshomaru grabbed her and pulled into a tight embrace, “I don't want you to every have to be put in a situation where your death would save my life. I still don't really understand way you think of them as family and I don't really care.”

 

“Sesshomaru?” Sorano wrapped her arms around Sesshomaru and rubbed her cheek against his chest.

 

“You are everything to me. I felt it the minute we met. I feel like I have met you before and now that I have you in my life I don't intend to ever let you go.” Sesshomaru growled possessively as he looked down at her.

 

“I am yours for the taking Sesshomaru.” Sesshomaru smiled softly as he leaned down and captured her lips. Sorano sighed as she let herself be completely lost to him.

Kagome sat down at the kitchen table once everyone had a cup of ramen. Sango had managed to find a phone and they were still waiting for Rin to show up. Sorano had decided that she needed a shower and to change out of the armor she was wearing. So now the remaining ones were all sitting around the small kitchen table picking at their food. Well everyone but Inuyasha. The minute the ramen was placed in front of him he was eating it like a starving child. Kagome just sat in her chair and stared at the styrofoam cup.

 

The newly added weight of the Shikon no Tama in her pocket was something that she was going to have to get used to. To think that it had been inside of her was something that Kagome was having problems figuring out. Sure she knew that her family was a high-ranking shrine family but she didn't think that they held the secret of being the keepers of the Shikon no Tama. Now that it had been released from her body she was going to be hunted by all those who had evil in their hearts. That was something that she was not ready or even willing to try and deal with at the moment. The United Alliance was all ready a tough enough job and now add to the list the guardian of the Tama.

 

Kagome glanced around the room. Sango was chit chatting with Miroku as the two of them slowly ate their dinner. Sesshomaru was seating quietly at the head of the table. His arms were crossed and his eyes were closed. She had gotten used to that look on him by now. If Sorano wasn't around then he would sit in silence and ignore everyone around him. Inuyasha was too busy eating his now third cup of ramen to really notice anyone in the room.

 

Kagome jumped as the chimes to the door sounded. Sango was quicker to rise then Kagome as she left the room to answer the door. Kagome knew what was coming. She knew what Rin was like. But no matter how hard she tried she could never get used to it. Kagome flinched as she heard the first tell tale signs of Rin. The yelling from the door way was all Kagome needed to know before Sango and Rin came around the corner.

 

Rin was red in the face with anger. Kagome hated to see Rin mad but there was no stopping the yelling match now. Rin had every right to be upset with them but no matter how many different ways Kagome thought about it she couldn't think of a way to calm Rin down enough for her to listen. Kagome steeled herself for the onslaught.

 

“How could you go against protocol!?”

 

Kagome flinched as she looked up at Rin. She was standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips and was completely blocking Sango from re-entering the kitchen.

 

“Rin sometimes protocol needs to be broken.” Sango…no…

 

Rin spun around so quickly that Kagome was surprised that she didn't fall, “Protocol is never to be broken! This shrine became a restricted area for a reason! What if something happened to you?! What if you needed medical help?! The shrine is a no go zone!!”

 

Kagome placed her chopsticks on the table as she calmly readied herself to talk some sense into Rin, “Rin its not like we planned on this. It just sort of happened.”

 

Rin turned around and glared at Kagome, “Planned it or not. When you arrived here you should have all left right away!”

 

“Calm down Rin,” Kagome turned as Inuyasha joined the conversation. Inuyasha I know you're trying to help but you never tell a girl to calm down. It just makes us madder.

 

True to Kagome's thoughts Rin turned an even deeper shade of red, “Inuyasha you are in no position to tell anyone to calm down. You are just a trainee and as such you should know that it is the job of the senior agents to lead by example. They were to leave here at once. There is a reason we have protocol and…”

 

“It is not always meant to be followed.” Kagome jumped as Sorano walked into the kitchen. Her hair was damp and hung all about her. She didn't even tie her hair back like she usually did. Not to mention that she was only wearing the haori of miko robes. Sesshomaru opened his eyes upon hearing Sorano's voice.

 

Rin opened her mouth to say something but Sorano held up her hand, “Rin protocol is meant to be followed but not if events take place that are out of any agents control. We were needed at the shrine and that is where we were. I know that meant that you were unable to help us if we needed it but that was out of our control. Now Rin listen to what we are saying and stop this nonsense. I thought I raised you better then that.”

 

Rin crossed her arms and pouted at Sorano. Sango edged her way past Rin and took her seat beside Miroku once more. Sorano and Rin stared at each other for a time before Rin sighed and slouched in a seat beside Sango. Sorano flicked some of her hair over her shoulder as she walked over to the last empty seat and sat down.

 

Kagome pushed her uneaten ramen noodles towards Rin with a small smile on her face. Rin nodded and took the noodles. Sorano chatted with Sesshomaru while the rest of them ate their make shift dinner in silence. Kagome wasn't the least bit interested in food. When Sango finally finished her ramen everyone turned to look at Sorano. She was still talking quietly with Sesshomaru.

 

“Uhmm… Sorano?”

 

Sorano stopped talking and looked towards Rin. Sorano nodded and Rin noticeably swallowed. “What did happen? Sango didn't tell me much on the phone. All she said was that we were all going to be staying at the Higurashi Shrine for the night and that I was to come right away.”

 

“The secret of the Higurashi Family.” Rin cocked an eyebrow and Sorano sighed, “Well I didn't think that we would be getting very much sleep tonight anyways. I am not too sure how long ago it happened but it was easily about five hundred years. The Higurashi were entrusted with the Shikon no Tama. Now before it came to the Higurashi it had pasted between youkai and ningen alike. But it wasn't until the Taijiya came upon the Tama that it came to be with the Higurashi.”

 

Sango gasped as she stared disbelieving at Sorano, “The Taijiya had the Tama. You mean my ancestors?!”

 

Sorano nodded, “Yes if my math is correct it was your great-great-grandfather who had slain the youkai that had the Tama. However the Tama was too corrupt for any of them to protect and that's how it came upon the first miko of the Higurashi Family. The minute they handed the Tama off to her the Tama was purified and a peace was once again brought forth to the land.'

 

`However this was not to last. The miko only grew stronger as time went by but she also grew older. That is when the Higurashi Family decided that they should create a path of protectors. The Tama was to stay with only female Higurashi, as they were the purest of miko. However it was the male Higurashi that had to produce the next protector.”

 

Miroku shook his head, “So let me get this straight. The `daughter' would protect the Tama and when she was to old to protect it it was the `son's daughter' who would become the next protector.”

 

Sorano nodded, “I know it sounds strange but the Higurashi were entrusted with keeping the Tama pure and since only Higurashi women seemed to be pure enough to do it it only seemed like the best thing to do. Remember Miroku that was in the past and that was the way things were done back then.”

 

Inuyasha leaned back in his chair as he crossed his arms, “So how did it come to Kagome?”

 

“I am getting to that part Inuyasha. As you all know very little is known about light youkai. That is because we do not exist in this realm. Earth is made up of many realms. The first is the most common and is known as the physical realm. We are in this realm now. Then there is the afterlife realm, the Between, the dark realm, and the light realm. As you may have guessed by now I am from the light realm.”

 

Sorano looked thoughtful for a moment, “I guess you could say that the light realm is located between the physical realm and the afterlife realm. The youkai of the light realm watch over the physical realm and make sure that a consistent balance is maintained in the physical realm. When the balance is shifted a light youkai will ascend to the physical realm, take a physical body, and help to restore the balance. That is how I came to be in this realm.'

 

`We sensed a great darkness coming and its soul purpose was to obtain the Shikon no Tama and kill all those who were protecting it. My father, Lord of Light, sent me. My mission was to become the Protector of the Higurashi Family.”

 

Kagome reached into her pocket and pulled out the Shikon no Tama. It was glistening and shining peacefully up at Kagome as she turned it over in her palm. “So you were sent to guard the Shikon no Tama.”

 

“Iie. I was sent to protect your family Kagome. I had nothing to do with the Shikon no Tama. The Shikon no Tama is just a Tama but put it in the hands of someone who wished for power and a great evil would be born. Your family Kagome was seeking a way to rid the world of the Tama for good. A way to purify it so that no one, good or evil, would ever have it.”

 

Kagome looked up at Sorano, “So you mean to say that my family wanted nothing to do with the Tama either?”

 

“Yes and no. Your family had seen what had happened to those who wished on the Tama. Their lives were destroyed as their selfish wishes backfired. But the Higurashi Family only carried the Tama and used its power to protect those who could not protect themselves. I have been with your family for generations Kagome. It wasn't until the looming battle with the darkness that seeked the Tama that I left their side. And believe me it was not by choice.”

 

Sango leaned forward in her chair as she gave Sorano a quizzical look, “Then how did it come to Kagome?”

 

Sorano leaned back and sighed, “Kagome's great-grandfather wished to purify the Tama more then anything. He had seen to many of the Higurashi women hunted and hurt because of it. He wanted to find a way to be rid of it once and for all. In all the years that I fought beside him he never once found a way to do it. But it he did find a way to seal it.”

 

Sesshomaru shook his head, “Seal it?”

 

Sorano nodded, “Hai. He was able to send the Tama to the `Between'. This is a plain of souls that are passing on, are created, or are being reborn. The Tama was send there to await a time that the Chosen Higurashi would be born. The Tama would attach itself to this soul and then it would be reborn within the Chosen Higurashi. The Chosen Higurashi is you Kagome.”

 

Kagome felt all the blood rush from her face. Slowly Kagome looked around the room before settling her eyes on the Shikon no Tama in her hand. I am the Chosen Higurashi?! But I'm not important. Why would the Tama choice my soul? Kagome looked up when she felt a strong hand squeeze her shoulder. Kagome smiled at Inuyasha before she turned her attention back to Sorano. “Why me?”

 

Sorano shrugged, “You are the purest person I have ever met Kagome. You always think of others before yourself. You help those who cannot help themselves. You believe and trust people with all your heart. You carry all the traits of your ancestors and I must say that you have a lot more power then they all did. The Shikon no Tama is yours to protect Kagome but it can also add to your power. As long as your wish to be more powerful is pure and of an honest heart the Tama will lend you its strength.”

 

Use the power of the Shikon no Tama to amplify my own powers?! I don't want to use it. I just wish I knew why I had it better. I am not worthy of such a thing. What if I mess up? What if someone takes it from me? What if I can't keep it pure?

 

“Kagome I know that you have a lot to think about and it is getting late. I say we all call it a night. Keep the Shikon no Tama with you at all times Kagome. I will always make sure that nothing happens to you but it is not my duty to protect the Tama as well. I know one day that you will see what it is that you are meant to do and when that day comes we will face it together.”

 

Kagome smiled and nodded at Sorano. Sorano smiled as she stood up and walked over to Kagome. She held out her hand to Kagome. “I found this when I was I changing and I thought that you could use it to carry the Shikon no Tama.” Kagome held out her hand and Sorano placed the item in her hand. When Sorano pulled her hand away Kagome gasped. It was her mother's necklace. Kagome and Souta had gone with Jii-chan to pick it out. It was white jagged jewels on a silver chain.

 

“Arigato Sorano.” Sorano smiled as she stretched and walked over to Sesshomaru. Sorano reached down and took his hand and together the two of them left the room. Kagome took the necklace and held it to the Shikon no Tama. Now how the heck am I to get the Tama on the chain? There is no hole running through it. As soon as the Tama and the necklace were beside each other the Shikon no Tama lit up and fused with the chain.

 

Inuyasha leaned over and whispered into Kagome's ear, “We should really head for bed. It has been a long night.” Kagome nodded and together the two of them left the room.

Inuyasha sat in Kagome's bedroom window. He could see Goshinboku and the softly swaying leaves calmed Inuyasha some how. He didn't know why he was so nervous or anxious or whatever it was, but somehow being in this room sitting in this window was bringing him peace. Inuyasha turned as he heard the bedroom open. He smiled when he saw that it was Kagome. She was backing into the room and by the sounds of it she was saying good night to the others.

 

The others would all be sleeping downstairs as the other bedrooms that were upstairs were not liveable. Kagome said that the youkai that attacked her family had tore apart all the rooms as they looked for something. Of course Kagome finally knew what it was that they were seeking but that didn't change anything now. Inuyasha silently climbed out of the window and snuck up behind Kagome. Her scent was coming off her in waves and it had been driving him nuts all night. They hadn't been alone in a while and it making him crazy with need.

 

Kagome turned around and walked square into Inuyasha's chest. He wrapped his arms around her before she fell backwards and pulled her tightly against him. They stood there in silence for a while. Both enjoying the others presence and gathering their thoughts. Kagome slowly wrapped her arms around Inuyasha as she burrowed herself closer into Inuyasha.

 

“Inuyasha?”

 

“Hmm?” Inuyasha ran his clawed hand through Kagome's thick raven locks. Her hair was always so silky soft that it was like he was running his hand through spun silk.

 

“I'm sorry.”

 

Inuyasha pulled Kagome slightly away from him and looked down into her sad mocha eyes, “For what?”

 

A silent tear escaped Kagome's eye as she spoke in barely above a whisper, “For everything. If you hadn't met me then you wouldn't have been drawn into any of this. You wouldn't have to worry about people finding out what you really do. You wouldn't have to hunt and kill others that hurt the innocent. You would have a normal life.”

 

Inuyasha placed his finger to Kagome's mouth to silence her, “Baka. I would rather have all that knowing that I have you then living a normal life without you in it.”

 

“But…” Inuyasha silenced Kagome as he leaned down and captured her lips. Kagome instantly went limp in his arms as he memorized everything about her lips with his. He pulled Kagome closer as he licked her lips in a silent plea to allow him to taste her once again. She answered by parting her swallow lips and wrapping her arms around his neck to bring him even closer.

 

Kagome's taste ignited his passion as he ran his tongue throughout her mouth. She moaned and bucked her hips into his as he started to tease her tongue with his own. Just when her tongue was starting to rub against his he pulled back and stared into her lust filled eyes.

 

“Kagome…” Inuyasha groaned as she glistened with want and she bared her neck to him. Kagome ran her hands down his back and rubbed her hips again into his. She was calling to him with everything she had and it was taking everything within him not to answer back. He needed to hear it from her lips. He needed her to say what he wanted more than anything to hear.

 

Inuyasha leaned back and lightly kissed her throat. Kagome moaned and she pushed herself more into his wets lips. “Inuyasha…” He kissed her throat a little harder as he reached down and cupped her firm buttock in his hands.

 

“Say it Kagome.”

 

“Ahhh…” Inuyasha nipped at her neck as he started to gently knead her rounded flesh. Kagome moaned louder as he trailed wet kisses down her neck and stopped just over her jugular vein. “Inuyasha… please… I…”

 

Inuyasha licked a path along her pulsing vein as she murmured incoherent words into the silent room. Her scent was changing rapidly making it even harder for him to control himself. His inner youkai was demanding that he claim her but he needed her to say it. He didn't want her to regret their mating. He knew she was the one the minute he saw her. Everything about her called to him. She completed him in a way that one else could.

 

Inuyasha pulled backed once more and waited till Kagome looked him in the eye. She was dazed, flushed, and her arousal filled every corner of the room. Inuyasha smiled and he leaned down and kissed her softly. “Kagome what do you want?”

 

She moaned as he squeezed her buttock tightly and he pulled her completely flush against his body. His arousal was tight within the confines of his pants and having Kagome this close and pressed up against it was making him loss control. She ran her hands down his back and came to rest on his behind. Her eyes glistened with her unspoken love as she smiled sweetly at Inuyasha. “I want to be yours Inuyasha. Now and forever.”

 

That was all he had ever wanted to hear from her red lips. He picked her up and carried her to the bed. He gently laid her on the puffy pink comforter as he climbed on top of her. Kagome reached up and ran her hand through his hair until she reached one of his sensitive ears. The minute her talented fingers touched his ears his eyes rolled back and a deep growl escaped from the depths of his throat.

 

How he did it he still didn't know and didn't care. But Kagome was soon lying naked beneath him. Her breasts rising and falling with every breath that she took. Inuyasha raised himself up as he looked over his mate. She was beyond beautiful as her body glistened in the pale moonlight that filtered through the window.

 

He smiled down at her as he let his head fall to one of her breasts. Her flesh was hot as he licked and nipped at her breast until her rosy nipple stood at attention. She moaned and arced her back as he took the swollen nipple into his mouth. Inuyasha savoured her taste as he rolled her sensitive nub between his teeth and tongue. Kagome yelled out his name when he reached over with his other hand and tortured her other breast. He released her nipple and switched to the other.

The scent of arousal filled his senses. His youkai blood surged through his veins as his name was chanted in breathy moans from Kagome.

 

Inuyasha sat back on his knees and quickly pulled his shirt over his head all the while staring down at Kagome's shaky lust covered body. She was this way because of him. She was moaning, panting, and aroused all because of him. He made quick work of his pants before he laid once more at the apex of her legs. He leaned forward and licked her already wet swollen nether lips. Kagome's hips bucked from the bed as she called out Inuyasha's name to the room.

 

He wrapped his arms around her thighs, pinning her hips to the bed, as he once again lavished her nether lips with his tongue. Kagome fisted her hands into the blanket and bit her lip to stop from screaming as he rubbed his tongue over her delicate bud. Her taste was so exotic and purely Kagome that it sent all his senses on fire. His sight. His hearing. His taste. All of it was concentrated on his Kagome. The woman that was willingly giving herself to him. The woman that filled and completed his soul.

 

Kagome's moans were getting louder and louder as she thrashed around on the bed. Her scent was spiking as he pumped his tongue in on out of her tight wet womanhood. She was close and he wanted to taste all of her. To memorize her. To know that she was in all this pleasure because of him. Kagome screamed out his name as she fell over the cliff and spilled herself into Inuyasha's awaiting mouth.

Kagome gently stroked his cheek, “I trust you. I love you.” Kagome smiled as she gently raised her hips and rubbed them against his swollen member. Inuyasha bit his lip to stop himself from just thrusting into her. He wanted this to be perfect.

 

Inuyasha lead himself to her slick opening. She smiled as she leaned up and kissed him. Inuyasha wrapped his arms around her, kissing her deeply, as he slowly entered her. Kagome wrapped her arms around him as he silenced her cry with his lips. Slowly he continued ever careful to harm her as little as possible. When he reached her barrier he pulled back and looked at her.

 

“I love you my Kagome.” Inuyasha captured her mouth again as he broke her hymen. He didn't move until he felt her slowly moving below him. He looked into her eyes and she nodded.

 

Slowly he pulled himself almost out before entering her again. She wrapped him perfectly and it was taking all his control to go slowly until she got used to his size. Kagome slowly started to match his rhythm as she bucked her hips into his.

 

“Inuyasha… ahhh…more..” Inuyasha pushed himself further into her as she moaned out his name again. She was so hot and wet as he pumped into her faster and harder. Kagome wrapped her arms around him, as she could no longer keep up with him. He pulled her thighs up and she wrapped her legs around his hips.

 

“Kami-sama!… Inuyashaaaa…. mmmm….deeper..harder…”

 

Inuyasha nuzzled into the crook of her neck as he thrust himself harder and faster into her tight entrance. Kagome cried in pleasure as she wrapped her legs tighter around him causing him to drive deeper within. She bared her neck as she cried out his name again and again. Inuyasha could feel that he was getting close to release but he needed her to release with him. The bed started to creek as he pounded into her again and again his youkai blood boiling to the surface.

 

Inuyasha sucked and nipped at the crook of her neck. Her inner walls were beginning to tighten around him. Her breathing was coming in sharper as she cried out incoherently with pleasure. Inuyasha felt his fangs getting longer as her inner walls started to clamp down around him. Inuyasha wrapped his arms tighter around her as he sank his fangs deep into the flesh at the crook of neck.

 

Kagome screamed his named as her orgasm hit her hard. Her inner walls milked him tightly as he fell over the edge and filled her with his seed. Inuyasha bit down even harder and Kagome racked her nails down his back as another wave of pleasure coursed through her. He opened his eyes and saw that the room was now filled with his red youki and her deep fuchsia miko. They swirled, mixed and embraced the two lovers.

 

Inuyasha released Kagome's neck as he collapsed on top of her. He didn't even have the strength to remove himself from within her. Inuyasha rolled his head and licked at the mark on her neck that would turn into his claim by first morning light. Inuyasha reached blindly behind him until he felt the afghan at the foot of her bed. He pulled it and haphazardly covered them.

 

Kagome cuddled Inuyasha to her chest as she gently ran her fingers through his hair. Inuyasha made to move off of her but she held him still. “Lay still Inuyasha. No one will intrude upon us. You are not squishing me. I enjoy your weight. Now sleep my mate.”

 

Inuyasha relaxed into Kagome's loose embrace as a surreal calm fell over him. He could feel Kagome all around him. She was apart of him and he apart of her. They were bonded mates and nothing would ever break them apart.

 

Inuyasha smiled to himself as his contented rumbling growl filled the room. Inuyasha closed his eyes as Kagome's even breathing told him she had fallen asleep. “Good-night my mate.” Inuyasha fell into a deep calming sleep as Kagome's aura lulled him and held him completely.

Sorano looked out over the grounds. She had felt Inuyasha's and Kagome's aura becoming one as the mating finished. Sorano smiled to herself as she relaxed into the boughs of Goshinboku. It had been to long since she had sat within the spiritual tree. There was a time, long ago, that she would sit within the boughs and think of nothing but the whispers on the night breeze.

 

But now events were happening that threatened the ones that she cared about. The Great Darkness of the past was once again coming. She could feel it in the very air that she breathed. She may have her memories back but now she needed to find the fortune of the Higurashi Family. And the key to that fortune was entrusted to Kaeda.

 

At least this time she was ready. Though the era may have changed the old alliances were still intact. Only this time the whole world was the alliance and the Darkness was yet to be enforced. Mystic was nothing more then a mere puppet. The master was the target. The master was the one that she needed to find. Her duty was clear. Her mission was set. Now all she needed was for someone to make the first move whether it be the Alliance or the Darkness was yet to be seen.
