Chapter Twenty-Eight

Balance and Rebirth

Part II

 

Kagome looked from Sesshomaru to Mystic. The sound of regenerating limbs echoed throughout the morning sky. How is it possible that he is still moving? Was he telling the truth that he couldn't be killed unless we kill his master? Kagome felt shivers running up and down her spine as Mystic slowly rose from the roof. His eyes were void as the lost limbs staggered across the roof and towards their master. Where is Sorano? What is going on?!

 

Kagome felt a familiar aura and turned to see Inuyasha standing behind her. “Kagome I think you need to get out of here. He is after the Shikon no Tama and if you stay here you'll only get hurt.”

 

Kagome could understand why he was saying this but she wasn't going anywhere, “Inuyasha I understand that you are worried for my safety but I am staying. I am a member of the United Alliance and it is our duty to stop youkai like Mystic.”

 

Inuyasha was about to reply but Sango cut him off, “No use trying Inuyasha. Miko and I are staying. We can take him.”

 

Kagome jumped when she heard laughter coming from behind her, “You lot think that you can take Mystic?”

 

Sango glared at Duane, “No one was talking to you Duane so mind your own fucking business!”

 

Duane crossed his arms and looked on as Mystic completed rebuilding himself, “I know for a fact that the only one that can kill Mystic is Sorano.”

 

Sesshomaru growled as Duane stated Sorano's name. “You will not speak her name!”

 

Duane shook his head, “Sesshomaru haven't you figured it out yet?” Sesshomaru glared at Duane, “I take that as a no. It was Kaeda's plan for me to come here. It was her idea that I send Sorano to the dark realm. I must say that after seeing her beauty and feeling her youki that I did indeed want her as my mate. I went a little to far with that. I was only to send her to the dark realm.”

 

Inuyasha looked between Sesshomaru and Duane, “You mean you were brought here so Sorano would be send to the dark realm as per Kaeda's orders? That is just fucked up!”

 

Duane looked from Mystic and smiled at Inuyasha, “As, how did you so elegantly put it, fucked up as that was it was what needed to be done.”

 

Kagome shook her head. I have no idea what everyone is talking about! Kaeda ordered Duane to come and put Sorano through all that? She wanted Sorano to go to the dark realm. But why… Kagome gasped as she raised a hand to her mouth. Duane smiled at Kagome.

 

“I see the young Miko has figured it all out.” Kagome looked at Duane to see if what she thought was true. Duane just smiled and nodded at Kagome.

 

“It was the only way wasn't it?” Duane nodded at Kagome and she could feel Inuyasha's frustration through her mark, “It's all about balance.”

 

“Very smart Miko. I knew there was a reason other then your beauty that Inuyasha would want in a mate. Yes this all has to do with balance. When I came to this realm I was already balanced. Kaeda was the one that helped me when the times started to change and the method that I was using to be balanced no longer worked in a world of technology.”

 

“But Haven is different. She needed to be reborn.” Duane nodded at Kagome and she took that as a sign that she was on the right track so she continued, “The thing that can balance her is this Yami no Otaru. She called it forth and when she did everything turned to light. I knew that it was Sorano's youki that was the light. But what is this Yami no Otaru?”

 

Duane suddenly growled, “There is no time for that explanation. It looks like Mystic is ready to fight. We have to hold him back until Sorano returns.”

 

Kagome turned and looked at Mystic. His eyes were once again blood red and he was floating in midair with many tentacles dancing below him. Kagome notched an arrow to her bow as Inuyasha flexed his claws. Why isn't anyone moving? Oh! Baka Kagome!! “Taijiya take to the air with Kirara. Keep to the air and give us coverage.” Sango nodded as she ran to Kirara. “Duane make sure you cover Inuyasha and Miroku. They are the only ones on this roof without combat experience.”

 

“Like hell we are!” Inuyasha growled out but to Kagome's surprise it was Sesshomaru that beat her to comment.

 

“Inuyasha you are such a baka! Listen to your mate! You do not have combat experience. You have trained but never been in the field.”

 

Inuyasha growled at Sesshomaru, “Like you have!”

 

Sesshomaru grabbed Inuyasha around the neck, “I have had experience in the field. I have been going on missions with Sorano for quiet some time now. You have no right to make comments about things that you do know.”

 

Kagome was going to ask Sesshomaru about that but Mystic attacked. Kagome leapt out of the way of a tentacle and shot her arrow off. A streak of fuchsia rent the air as it sailed across the roof and took out two of Mystic's tentacles. Mystic laughed as the tentacles instantly re-grew themselves. Kagome backpedalled as Mystic shot another tentacle at her. Kagome barely had time to erect a kekkai as the tentacle banged into it. This is going to be a long battle!

Sesshomaru pulled Inuyasha out of the way of a tentacle attacked. Inuyasha barely saw Kagome defending herself as Sesshomaru dragged him away. “What the fuck Sesshomaru! Let me go!”

 

“Your mate is in charge of this battle until Sorano arrives. I hate to take orders from a ningen but I do not have an option here. You and the monk are to stay out of the way!” Sesshomaru threw Inuyasha over to Miroku as he turned and entered the battle. Inuyasha was about to chase after him but he felt a hand at his elbow. Inuyasha turned to yell at Miroku but instead looked into the face of Kaeda. “Kaeda?!”

 

Kaeda nodded as she looked on as the others battled. “I see that Mystic is indeed getting a lot stronger. Haven is the only one that can stop him now.”

 

Miroku walked over to Kaeda, “Why are you here Kaeda? It is not safe for you to be here.”

 

Kaeda smiled at Miroku as she held out her hands. Held in her palms were two strange oblong crystal clear jewels. The jewels were inset to metal rings that looked like bracelets. Kaeda nodded to Inuyasha and Miroku. “These are for you both. They are nano-tech weapons. The others are in this battle and do not have time to stop and worry about the two of you. These are not the most powerful weapons but they will react to your youki and spiritual power.”

 

Inuyasha grasped one in his hand and it instantly felt warm. Inuyasha looked at Miroku, who was already attaching it to his wrist. Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders and placed the bracelet to his wrist. With a flash of light the bracelet attached itself to his wrist. This is just messed up. I really hate all this technology shit. I mean why couldn't she just give me a good old fashioned sword?

Sesshomaru dodged another tentacle as he ran to the other side of the roof. As much as he hated to admit it Duane was a really good fighter. They were reading each other's moves as they circled underneath Mystic. Kagome was much better at defence and her ability to project barriers were incredible. Sesshomaru and Duane only had to worry about making their attacks count as Kagome summoned kekkai after kekkai to defend them.

 

Sesshomaru leapt into the air and raised his claws. Bright green youki illuminated his claws as he brought them searing through one of Mystic's tentacles. Before Mystic had a chance to re-grow it Duane came in and destroyed the limb that had been cut free. Sesshomaru narrowly avoided a well aimed tentacle as he flipped to the other side of Mystic. Just as Sesshomaru landed Sango and Kirara descended from the skies and, with Sango's katana, she sliced through the tentacle.

 

A streak of fuchsia light pierced the tentacle and disintegrated it. Mystic yelled out in pain as the effects of the purifying arrow tore through three other tentacles. Sesshomaru jumped back into the air and raised both his arms. The scent of poison filled Sesshomaru's nose as he sliced down the back of Mystic. The wounds hissed and bubbled as the poison entered Mystic's system.

 

Sesshomaru heard a scream and looked to see that Sango had been knocked from Kirara. His moment of distraction caused Mystic to hit him squarely in the chest. The power behind the attack knocked Sesshomaru across the roof and into the stairwell cover. He could taste the metallic flavour of blood in his mouth as the wind was knocked from his lungs. Dust and pieces of stone fluttered around him as he got to his feet. Large cracks and little crevices had formed against the wall from his impact.

 

Sesshomaru looked into Mystic's blood red eyes. A smile played upon Sesshomaru's lips as he looked into the empty void of Mystic's eyes. He has no soul. He is but a puppet. How is that he can read our moves so easily? The master to this puppet must be nearby. Sesshomaru walked towards Mystic, all the while staring unblinkingly into his eyes, as he crossed the roof. Sesshomaru raised his right hand before him and two claws lit up with his youki.

 

Sesshomaru smirked as he ran full out at Mystic. Mystic backed up at the sear speed at which he was coming. Mystic shot all his tentacles towards Sesshomaru but he was to quick as he leapt into the air and released his youki whip. The whip slashed through the air instantly destroying four tentacles and severing three others. Mystic yelled out as Duane leapt into the air from the other side and lashed out at Mystic with his claws.

 

Sango, who had finally gotten up from falling from Kirara, jumped onto a tentacle and ran along it towards Mystics half youkai body. Mystic growled and swiped his claws at Sango. She flipped over him and suddenly the air crackled with energy as a fuchsia light ripped through the air. Sesshomaru and Duane leapt out of the way as the energy of Kagome's arrow pierced through Mystic's heart.

 

Mystic's mouth opened in a silent scream as he tittered towards the edge of the roof. Kirara flew through the air and collided with Mystic sending he over the edge of the building. Sesshomaru watched as the last of his tentacles fell over the edge of the roof and vanished from sight. Sesshomaru straightened himself out as he wiped the blood from his chin. Kagome walked over to Sango to see if she was all right from the fall. Duane made his way towards Sesshomaru.

 

“Nice work Sesshomaru,” Duane stopped just shy of Sesshomaru.

 

Sesshomaru growled and glared at Duane, “Do not talk to this Sesshomaru. I will still kill you. You have my word.”

 

Duane smiled, “Ah but Sesshomaru we are on the same side.”

 

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at Duane, “Same side? I think not. Anyone that dares to even touch what is mine without my permission is not on my side.”

 

Duane laughed, “Say what you will. But we are both a part of the United Alliance.”

Suddenly a mist filtered over the roof. Kagome stood up and looked towards Duane. But Duane was looking around just as confused as she was. The mist started to blur her vision until she couldn't see anything in front of her. Kagome once again knelt down and felt around for Sango but she couldn't feel her anywhere.

 

“Taijiya? TAIJIYA!” Kagome raised her hand and touched her earpiece. <Central Command this is Miko.> Nothing. Kagome bit her lip and breathed deeply to calm herself. This mist is just making it so I can't reach Innocence. Taijiya probably just got up and can't hear me.

 

Kagome stood up again and felt out with her mating mark. There is no way that his mist can stop that. Kagome felt a pull coming from her left and slowly started to walk in that direction. Last thing she wanted was to walk off the edge of the building. The feeling was getting stronger until Kagome walked square into something and fell backward. Something grabbed her wrist and stopped her from falling onto the concrete roof.

 

“Kagome?” Kagome smiled as she recognized the voice.

 

“Inuyasha! Are you okay?” Slowly Inuyasha's face came into view.

 

“Keh! Of course I'm all right. I'm not a weak ningen. But what the fuck is up with this mist?”

 

Kagome glanced around and still she couldn't see anything. The sun's rays were too weak to penetrate the thick mist. “I don't know. We need to find the others. But we have to be careful. We don't want to end up walking off the building.”

 

Inuyasha smiled at Kagome, “Yeah that wouldn't be good now would it.” Kagome smiled at Inuyasha but suddenly Inuyasha shot forward and wrapped his hands around her throat. Kagome gasped as he started to squeeze tighter around her throat. “You don't need to worry about walking off the building. I'll always protect you.”

 

Kagome tried to pry Inuyasha's hands off her throat but he was too strong. She tried to yell out but he was holding on to tightly. Inuyasha's golden eyes swim before her. The same eyes that she could loss herself in were now cold and empty. He was trying to kill her. Kagome kicked at Inuyasha but he just smiled more at her as her vision began to blur.

Sesshomaru stared blindly into the mist. Duane had looked confused when the mist started. That only meant that he wasn't the one that making it. Sesshomaru shook his head. This was becoming more and more troublesome. Suddenly a dark object appeared before him. It was small to start but it was getting more and more clear as the thing walked towards him.

 

“It can't be…”

 

Suddenly Sorano appeared before him. She was wearing her torn uniform and was smiling weakly at Sesshomaru. “Sesshomaru…” Suddenly she started to fall forward. Sesshomaru shot forward and pulled her into his embrace.

 

“Sorano!” She was pale but she was at least back to normal. Her markings were back and her eyes were once again a piercing silver. She was cool to the touch, which struck Sesshomaru as odd. Even when she was hurt before she always felt at least warm. “Where have you been? What is happening?”

 

“I have been reborn Sesshomaru. I am now balanced. The mist is from the dark realm. I couldn't keep it from happening. It will go soon and then we can be together.” Sorano curled herself into Sesshomaru's chest.

 

Sesshomaru wrapped his arms around Sorano and breathed in her scent. She was back in his arms where she belonged. “Sorano… AH!!” Sesshomaru gasped out as he felt something burning on his back. He pushed Sorano away as he stumbled backwards. Sorano smiled at Sesshomaru as she raised a steaming hand before her.

 

“I fear that I am to hot for you to handle. But don't worry my Sesshomaru. The pain will go and then we can be together forever as mates.” Sorano started to walk towards Sesshomaru and he backed away. “Sesshomaru I need to be with you.” Sorano raised her hand as two of her claws started to glow with her youki.

 

“Sorano…”

Kagome was lying on the roof trying to fight Inuyasha off of her. It was her Inuyasha but he was trying to kill her. Kagome didn't want to hurt him even though he was trying to take her life when he vowed to always protect her. That's when it happened. It was the briefest of moments but Inuyasha's eyes changed from gold to red. Kagome blinked hard as her vision swam together.

 

The sound of something slicing through the wind rang in Kagome's ears. As soon as the sound was heard it was over. Inuyasha loosened his grip as his face fell into a silent yell. His eyes changed to red before he turned to dust and filtered away on the breeze. Kagome rolled to her side and started to cough as the much needed air filled her lungs.

 

Suddenly the mist started to swirl and whip around her. Kagome pushed herself onto her knees as her hair whipped about her in the strong wind that had come out of nowhere. The mist started to thin and slowly dark objects started to appear before her.

Sesshomaru grabbed his side as he leapt out of the way of Sorano's energy whip. She was smiling as she flicked her wrist and shot another whip in his direction. Sesshomaru landed and rolled to the side as the whip smashed into the rooftop leaving a groove in its wake.

 

“Beloved why do you run from me. It will only hurt for a moment but then we can be together.” Sorano smiled sweetly at Sesshomaru as he blinked a bead of blood out of his eye. I can't attack Sorano. What happened to her to make her this way?!

 

Sesshomaru slowly stood up but grabbed his side. He wasn't healing as quickly and the last hit from Sorano had broken a few of his ribs. Sorano slowly walked towards Sesshomaru all the while she had a sweet loving smile on her face.

 

Suddenly a growl rang out and the sound of something slicing the wind rent the air. Sorano stood still in front of him. Slowly she looked down and Sesshomaru gasped. A paper-thin shimmering line divided her at the waist. Sorano raised her hand and mouthed his name as she turned to dust and vanished on the wind. The mist around him started to swirl and twist as the wind picked up. The sun's ray started to filter through the mist and Sesshomaru could just barely make out dark figures.

Inuyasha and Miroku watched on as the mist started to churn and twist in the sudden wind. The mist had appeared out of nowhere but Kaeda had managed to erect a kekkai that shielded them. Inuyasha wanted to ask the babaa what she was doing but she was to busy chanting to answer any of his questions. When Inuyasha asked Miroku he said that the mist had a strange foreboding feeling to him.

 

The sun's ray pierced the mist and slowly the figures of their friends appeared. Kagome was kneeling on the ground with her hand rubbing her throat. She was staring off somewhere. As Inuyasha peered around he saw that Kirara was curled around Sango and Sesshomaru was barely standing.

 

“What the fuck just happened?!” Inuyasha tried to reach Kagome through their mark but whatever Kaeda was chanting was making it hard to tell if Kagome was okay or not. Inuyasha looked to Sesshomaru and saw that he had a tiny river of blood running down his forehead and over one of his eyes. He was also holding onto his side.

 

“What was that mist?” Miroku asked more to himself then anything.

 

Inuyasha jumped as Kaeda answered him, “That mist was created by Mystic. He was the ability to create illusions. I erected the kekkai to block out his illusions but the others look like they fell to them. But they all seem to be alright.”

 

Inuyasha growled as he looked at Kagome, who was still rubbing her throat, and then at Kaeda, “Does Kagome look alright to you?!”

 

Kaeda raised her hand, “She is alive and she has been put through worse things than this.”

 

Inuyasha glared at Kaeda and was about to tell her off when the sound of metal on metal broke the air. Inuyasha turned back but couldn't see where the sound was coming from. Inuyasha's ears were twitching as the sound bounced off the other buildings making it impossible for him to locate the source.

 

Suddenly a bolt of light hit the roof, which caused all the mist to instantly vanish. Dust and debris shot into the air as the light slowly started to vanish. Something suddenly shot out of the light and into the air. Inuyasha felt the tiny hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. Floating in midair was none other then Mystic himself. He was holding a long thin katana in one hand and was panting. Blood ran down from thin cuts on his arms and legs.

 

“You bitch! Why can't you just die!”

 

The dust and debris settled and in the crater stood a figure. They had their back to Inuyasha but he could tell it was a youkai. The amount of youki coming off the person was unbelievable. He had never felt anything so intense before. The youkai was wearing a tight black body suit that covered them from neck to feet. They were wearing armor of the likes that Inuyasha had never seen before. They had shoulder plates and a chest plate of shining silver. A v-shaped metal belt was about their waist and covering the hips and thighs were long shining silver plates. From the knee down was encased in metal.

 

Long golden white hair was pulled into a high ponytail and was held in place by a strange gold metal hair tie. All over the armor were strange cravings and it was adored with shimmering crystal clear jewels of all sizes and shapes. But what drew Inuyasha's attention the most was the staff in their hand. The staff stood about two feet taller then the one wielding it. The two feet at the top was made of a thin metalled glaive. The staff's handle was all black but when the sun's light hit it it shimmered a deep silver. Evenly spaced along the staff's handle were large round crystal orbs. The tail of the staff was a large diamond shaped blade that was made of the same metal as the glaive at the top.

 

“Sorano!” Inuyasha jumped as Kagome yelled out. The figure turned their head and Inuyasha gasped. It was the profile of Sorano. Her hair hung differently around her face but it was differently her. The sakura pedal marking on her cheek was gone and in its place was a long thinned out diamond of the same colour as the old marking. On her forehead, from what Inuyasha could see, was still the sun marking but it was different. It no longer had the round center but it was now in the shape of a slightly rounded diamond. The circles that extended from the sun were now strange markings that were hard for Inuyasha to make out.

 

Sorano smiled at Kagome, “Miko you are hurt?”

 

“It was you wasn't it! You were the one that stopped that thing!” Sorano nodded as she turned and looked at Sesshomaru.

 

“Sesshomaru.” Sesshomaru nodded to Sorano and she smiled. “I have been reborn. I now bare the marks of my family. I am truly sorry that I was gone for so long. I will make up for that now.”

 

Inuyasha felt goose bumps rise all over his skin as Sorano spoke. She had power and had total control over it. “Mystic I will not let what you tried to do go unchallenged. I was able to see through your illusion. How dare you try and use my image to hurt Sesshomaru! How dare you use the image of Inuyasha to try and kill Miko! I will put an end to you once and for all!”

 

Sorano raised her staff and the glaive lit up. The wind once again picked up as Sorano concentrated on her staff. The orbs that adored the staff's handle lit up one by one as the wind whipped Inuyasha's hair about.

 

Mystic raised his katana and glared at Sorano, “I will see you dead Sorano before the day is over.” Sorano growled out as she leapt at Mystic.
